Tie-string Sleeveless Top for Natalie

I'm kinda in a sewing mode these days, & feeling quite industrious! So, I gotta ride on the inspiration & motivation while it lasts :D

This is by no means a tutorial, but I'm always impressed at reading other blogposts on tutorials. So, I want to do my best to capture the steps as closely as I possibly can, so that you're able to "imagine" the work process as I go along.

Firstly, I decided to pick a tie-string blouse that my daughter likes to wear. I think, this should be an easy enough project for me to get started ^^

Understanding that this t-shirt material is considered as "knit" material, & thus much more stretchable, I drew out a pattern (with it as my example) that's a few size larger. I think I'm safe... for now.

Then come the hard part. Choosing fabric, hehe... Though I've decided to work with GLIMMA collection for this project, it's really hard to choose 1 out of the 18 prints I have at hand.

And, since Natalie is in school, I cant ask her opinion of which will be her favourite. (She's like me, she has up to 10 favourites! lol... )

Finally, I decided to work with Tove in Rosey Cheeks. She's barely 7, so let's choose something fun, playful, cheerful, with a dash of pink! ^^

Pattern drawn out, & fabric rolled, ready to be cut.

I have no idea how this will turn out... as it's my first attempt at a free-hand drawn pattern :D Even though I knew the tie-string will compensate for any wrong-sizing along the arm hole, I'm working along by "faith" really, & playing by "ear"... haha...

Initially I dont want to use an inner lining, as I had cut & folded the fabric a tad short (trying to be thrifty). But hey, let every effort be the best effort!

So, I unrolled the fabric, & cut some more for the lining. With the lining, it'll help to give it a nice "body" with a professional finishing touch too.

Sewing the lining (right side to right side), "opening" it, & stitching it across again on the "inside".

Not sure if this picture is clear enough, but the stitching can be seen on the inside (of the neck-line) here, mainly to keep this lining sitting pretty, downwards.

From the front (outside), no stitching can be seen.

Up next, cutting the bias tape for the strings. I really should have taken more pics from this stage onwards, attaching the bias tape. Well, I was totally in no mood already, as it was raining cats & dogs outside, the sky has turned really dark. With the kids sleeping (yes, this project was stopped at least 4 times from morning till afternoon), all I wanted to do was rush thru & complete it.

Finally, it was completed, with hidden seams even on the inside. I was really proud of myself & cant wait for Natalie to wake up from her nap.

When she did, I happily asked her to try on her new tie-string top. To my dismay, she struggled to fit into it from the arm onwards! Oh no....!!!

With some creative manoeuvre, I managed to let it slide down her. But, it was obviously too small for her.

My mind started ticking quickly & determining that this day's work is not going to waste, I set forth to undo the side seams, & ... everything literally!

This poor fabric had to go thru some painful undoing, but I'm glad it persevered, along with me, hehe...

But, this time, I had no more allowance to "hide" my inside seams neatly. I had no choice, but to use the "zig-zag" stitches (dont know what it's called) keep it from fraying in the future.

Natalie was happily playing camping with her brother by then, & sweaty too, when I called her again to try on the altered piece.

This time it fits! *phew*

"Natalie, please wear this often...", I told her. I went through a lot just to make you this simple, easy to make Tie-String Top! She smiled, & say "OK!" :D

This was taken this morning, newly ironed & pressed.

Up next, an Easy-Peasy Skirt to go along, with another Drake in Slate fabric, from the same collection ;)

Made a Cover for my Samsung Note with some Fabric Scraps

What have you been making lately? I took out some fabric scraps & decided to make a cover for my Samsung Note.

Finally decided on Michael Miller's fabric (cant remember the name, but probably Garden in Cream?), with Joel Dewberry's fabric for the interior, & a brown piece of twill fabric for the contrasting front.

It's quite belated really, as this Samsung is almost 1 yr old now, & I'm already thinking of upgrading to a newer Note ^^ hehe...

But hey, let's not dampen the mood while inspiration strikes! :D

Made measurements, drew out the pattern, & here are the pieces all cut & displayed neatly, ready to be used.

Initially, I really want to take a picture of every step, & perhaps try to make a tutorial on how to make this. But, once I get started, all thoughts of taking pictures etc just flew out the window.

I was already in sewing mood, & just concentrated on completing it!

As it's an easy enough project, it didnt take long at all, & I'm satisfied with my newly completed Samsung Note Sleeve/Cover/Pouch :D

As I made a similar one for a customer few weeks ago, I decided to use the same general design. Except, that instead of a rubber band & button (which my customer requested for hers), I decided to use a flap, & velcro to secure it.

I love that the Samsung is large & wide. So, the front pocket is really useful for the headphones (or in my case, I'll probably put my EZ-link/transport & credit card in it for a short trip to the mall.

I was having my daily fix of Pinterest, when I chanced upon this tutorial.

As usual, the fun title "Braided Belt Messenger Bag"is what really caught my eye first, followed by the eye catching fabric of course :)

I though, hey... this is so clever!

Often times, I wanted to make a nice messenger bag for myself, but am out of suitably "nice" strap. Sometimes, I just dont want to use the same fabric for the strap, but buying leather straps is just too troublesome for me, especially since it's just a one-off project.

But, I do have LOTS of all kinds of leather belts that are hanging in my wardrobe, waiting patiently for its turn of glory, :D

What better way to use it than this? The length is easily adjustable with the buckle, & the colour/texture is already what we'd have loved in the first place (otherwise we wont have it in our wardrobe right?) ^^

And, for those of you who've been accumulating fabrics & running out of ideas, this tutorial & fun pattern is bound to get you inspired, & itching to get right to work right away!

Sanrio, Little Twin Stars iPhone 5 Sleeve

This is what I worked on this afternoon, a custom order iPhone 5 Case with Japanese fabric (Sanrio, Little Twin Stars) & star button + rubber band sent by the customer.

Initially I was a bit doubtful as I've never worked on this design before. And, the first attempt with something I had in mind didnt work out as well.

But thankfully, after careful "studying" again of the design she has in mind, I managed to complete it with hidden seams throughout ^^

So proud of myself... *pat*pat* hehe...

Lastly, I dont have an iPhone 5, or an iPhone... so, I cant picture it with one :D

Though, I'm sure it'll look better "filled" up :)

Exterior measurement: 5.25 x 3 inches So, I'm confident this will fit the iPhone 5 comfortably with some allowance all around, even with a casing on it.

The front pocket was meant to put earphones in.

I'm happy with it, hopefully she will be too :D

Look at what just arrived in the HOUSE!

I've been quite under the weather the past few days, with my son down with fever & staying home for 2 days. Not to mention, I was coming down with something that develops rather quickly too. Totally "immobilising" me, & again I felt "trapped" in my own body, & feeling quite miserable at not being able to do much work.

But, it's Friday & the weekend is here. I can't just sit by & let the recovery take its own sweet time. I'll just have to "fight" flu & cough head on... eat well, sleep more, & pray for healing!

Thankfully, I think I'm starting to get a little better now, but I still got to watch it.

Relaxing with a favourite documentary after lunch, the delivery guy came & brought GLIMMA with him!

Though it's only 1 box (with the other box still stuck in Japan, he says), I'm immediately cheered up a level or 2 already.

Nothing like a dose of GLIMMA to help perk me up a bit, just when I need it! ;-D

The days are flying by so quickly, that another Monday has arrived.

I dont have the blues, & am thanking God from whom all blessings flow :)

Today, I'd like to highlight 2 newly completed Organizer Wristlets made with Pat Bravo's fabric from her Summer Love (Beyond Bliss in Tangerine) & Poetica collection (Spirited Verse in Candy).

This is probably one of The Laughing House's oldest design, & often have I decided to stop making & stocking up on this, & let it "fade" away. (That's the reason why you're seeing so few ready stock of this design in the HOUSE).

However, from time to time, we'll still be receiving another custom order for this design. And, I'll be proud to show off the newly completed pieces in beautiful fabrics (of course!) ^^

A friend of mine who ordered a customized larger Organizer Wristlet few years back, called me to ask for a new piece to be made for her, as she's a new Mommy now, & found that this wristlet is so practical & functional as a baby bottle/diapper organiser!

I've passed the baby stage now, but I can briefly recall that any help in organizing baby bottles/containers with snacks & diapers for a trip out will be greatly appreciated.

I promise to take pictures once a bigger/customized piece for her is completed. :D

I love it when customers choose a fabric plus a coordinating print to go along with it. Seeing the 2 fabrics together is a different feeling to when you see the completed project.

Everything comes alive, & is transformed!

Posting pictures like these on FB is another thrill for me, seeing the view stats & the positive comments from "followers".

Ah... so, this is what it's all about. Job satisfaction... :D

Public Garden affair at National Museum (23 & 24th Feb 2013)

Just concluded a 2 days Public Garden event at National Museum over the weekend. Thank you so much for all customers who visited, supportive shoppers who chatted with me, & friendly neighbour vendors! It's been a great "outing", albeit an exhausting one for me :D

I must say, this has been the best experience I've had so far from all my other craft fairs. Firstly, the location at National Museum is convenient & well known to most (if not all) shoppers. Secondly, the comfortable, & beautiful setting is large, bright, & safe for my kids to roam around freely! :D Thirdly, it's indoor. So, there's no fear of rain & getting my stuff wet & dirty.

This is also the 1st time I'm taking part 2 days in a row... I must say, it's really exhausting, & pushed me to the limit physically as I'm not one who can really sit/or stand for very long in a stretch! hehe...

Some highlights:

1. Previous customers who visited the fair, said hi & introduced themselves to me. One lady even showed me the pouch she bought from me several years back, & still using it now! You really made my day! ^^

2. Customers (young & old) who enquired abt sewing lessons. I do have the intention of starting a class this year, but have yet to "settle" down properly after my daughter started primary 1 this year. Perhaps, I should really sit down & plan properly.

3. Customers who chatted & said very kind & encouraging words to me! WOW... thank you so much!

4. I love my friendly vendor neighbours (left & right) ! We had a good time chatting & sharing tips & experiences. You know who you are :D

5. Other fellow vendors & familiar faces I've met through MAAD, Handmade Movement, & previous Public Garden affairs. It's nice to meet all of them again, made small talks & laugh together.

Puppy Love

I had a pile of fabric stash, & wondering what to make with them, I've decided to go ahead with simple projects that requires minimal time, & fabrics.

With a few themes & little projects in mind, I set out with one of them. Starting by drawing an outline for the dogs. It was too small.

I started all over again. Hm... the size is perfect this time round.

But, I overlooked certain things... & it wasnt turning out the way it's supposed to be. Not wanting to "abandon" these pups, I decided to "adopt" them. It's still work in progress... now I'm wondering what I should do next to make them feel right at home :)

Trees, grass field... dog house & bones are ideas floating around my head. Guess I'm in serious trouble now!

My simple & straight forward project is turning out to be another tedious undertaking.

What to do? I'm a mom... mothers want to give the best for their babies. ;)

Public Garden @ National Museum of Singapore

Save the date!

I'm excited to announce that The Laughing House & Fabric will be taking part in Public Garden's event at National Museum of Singapore.

This will be a first for Public Garden, as they moved from the usual venue of MICA Building.

I'm excited for several reason, one of it being the "cool" location where the event will be held. As the last flea market hosted by the museum was 2006! The management & organizer is perhaps trying to move with the times, & give this a shot to create an extra buzz for museum goers & art lovers alike.

With an intended target of about 100 vendors, "live" music performances, interactive workshops, I'm sure they're targeting an all-out hit to create a memorable experience for shoppers who've yet to be exposed to the local handmade indie-community & creativity of the local folks.

I'm sure you'll walk away enriched, & inspired by the experience!

What's new @ Laughing House Fabric for the year 2013? I promise not to disappoint, with 2 interesting collections in the pipeline :D

First of all, SCAMPER by Rebekah Ginda from BIRCH Fabrics will be our first arrival for the year.

In their own words, Birch fabrics mixes "retro style with whimsical juvenile accents". Well said, & true enough isnt it?

The gentle pastel colours with the occasional bright orange & cute designs are guaranteed to WOW your breath away! hehe... it did mine ;)

IKEA Shopping FUN! ^^

It's the school holiday, & the kids get restless easily. So, I'm "pacing" myself between activities at home... & bringing them out.

This morning, I announced that we'll go to IKEA, to get some lighting for Christmas.

And, guess what I came home with?? *lol*

Some potpourris, scented candles, a lantern, 2 doggies, & some Christmas themed wrapping paper. :D

But then, it was all soo satisfying & "happy" buying these stuff ^^

Not having my husband around on this trip, gives me "freedom" to buy what my heart desires, *grin*... but, I'm also proud at resisting the charming (& tempting) shiny red, white & silver baubles that will look so pretty hung up around the house for the festive season.

I feel they didnt cost much, but on hindsight, I figured that I'll need more than 1 or 2 boxes to create a certain "effect" that I envisioned. And, suddenly they just seemed too costly for me.

I decided to put those away, & go the handmade route again! :)

This is where all these festive red & silver wrapping papers come in!

I'm planning to make wreaths, & pretty little hang-up decors wrapped in these.... Plus, my intended "Christmas Tree" wall mural :D

Multi-purpose, handmade, & cost saving too!

Now, I'll just have to "persevere" to see these projects through... with the help of my 2 kids of course ;)

Bella arrived this morning, much faster than anticipated.

I've decided to hold a Pre-Order Sale to garner exposures while awaiting her arrival. And, now that she's here, it'll be sold according to the suggested retail price with immediate effect.

However, due to the on going Pre-Order Sale, I'll continue with it until the end of today. And, the prices will be adjusted upwards from 21st November onwards (Singapore time :) ).

The actual prints are sooooo much more prettier in person, and especially so when coupled together in coordinating colours & prints! So much so, that I can't wait to have them cut, & started on MY OWN projects as well!

The question now is, what must I do to keep the kids occupied long enough for me to "play", now that it's the year end school holiday? hehe... :P

Family Heirloom

My mom has been telling me of this Singer sewing machine which she "inherited" from her mother, who originally belonged to her husband (my grandfather).

So, all in... this piece is easily 70-80 years old!

It's an old rusty & broken down machine, which is just kept away at her house.

When I told her I intend to get an industrial sewing machine to work on the heavier materials, she suggested this machine immediately.

So, she had it serviced & fitted with a motor. Knowing that it's the typical black colored machine, I asked her to have it painted in a nice cream colour while the workers are still on it.
