“Brierfield – Attempted murder arrest after girl ‘stabbed,’” by Joe Harrigan, Lancashire Telegraph, June 12, 2026:

A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after armed police attended an incident where a teenage girl was reportedly “stabbed in the neck”.

The incident was reported just after 3pm on Friday June 12 around Wood Street in Brierfield, with members of the public reporting a heavy police presence into the afternoon.

Later that evening officers confirmed that a 17-year-old girl had been taken to hospital, while a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “We were called at 3.06pm today to Wood Street, Brierfield, to a report of a stabbing.

“It was reported that a 17-year-old girl had been assaulted and suffered a stab injury to her neck.

Iran, US signal deal within reach as Israel continues attacks on Lebanon

  • Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a memorandum of understanding with the United States to end the war “has never been closer”, stressing also that media speculation about the deal should cease “pending its finalisation”.
  • US President Donald Trump reposted the Iranian foreign minister’s statement on his Truth Social platform after earlier blasting Iran for alleged leaks to state media regarding details of the memorandum, calling the reports “fake news”.
  • Shehbaz Sharif, prime minister of Pakistan, which has mediated talks between Tehran and Washington, said the “final, agreed-upon text of the peace deal has been reached”, adding “next steps” still need to be finalised.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced on Tuesday that its 59 years of membership in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will come to an end, effective May 1.

The split was not a surprise, given the growing political and economic rifts between the Emirates and other OPEC members, especially Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The UAE also withdrew from OPEC+, the expanded coalition formed in 2016 to induct ten major non-member oil producers — notably including Russia, which by that point had become the world’s third-largest oil producer.

The official statement from the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure said the decision to withdraw “reflects the UAE’s long-term strategic and economic vision and evolving energy profile, including accelerated investment in domestic energy production, and reinforces its commitment to a responsible, reliable, and forward-looking role in global energy markets.”

The ministry said the decision to separate from OPEC “aligns with the United Arab Emirates’ long-term strategic and economic vision and the evolution of its energy sector, including accelerating investment in domestic energy production, while reinforcing its commitment to its role as a responsible and reliable producer looking ahead to the future of global energy markets.”

The statement mentioned the current “disruptions in the Arabian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz” as factors in the UAE’s “thorough review” of its OPEC membership.

“The stability of the global energy system relies on the availability of flexible, reliable, and reasonably priced supplies, and the UAE has invested to meet demand changes efficiently and responsibly, prioritizing supply stability, cost, and sustainability,” the statement said.

The UAE’s statement frequently returned to the topic of “flexibility,” a clear rebuke to the OPEC cartel’s practice of imposing production caps on member states to prop up global oil prices. The statement concluded by essentially promising that the UAE would not wantonly disrupt energy prices with its newfound production flexibility.

“It is noteworthy that this decision does not change the United Arab Emirates’ commitment to the stability of global markets or its cooperation-based approach with producers and consumers,” the statement concluded. “Rather, it enhances its ability to respond to changing market requirements.”

In other words, the UAE wants the option to surge oil production the next time a pack of thugs and pirates tries to shut down a major oil shipping lane or sabotage some pipelines. A source in the energy industry told The National on Tuesday that the Emirates felt the current crisis presented “the right time to leave OPEC.”

“This decision is good for consumers and good for the world. Following the Hormuz crisis, globally, the spare capacity is at a historical low and very tight. This sovereign national decision by the UAE will help lower prices as the UAE will help bring more supply available to the markets,” the source said.

OPEC was established in 1960, with a founding roster that included Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela. The Emirate of Abu Dhabi joined in 1967, four years before the United Arab Emirates brought Abu Dhabi together with six other statelets to declare a union fully independent from the United Kingdom in 1971.

The UAE nearly included Qatar and Bahrain as well, but they opted to remain independent nations, due in part to lingering economic and territorial disputes.

Qatar exited from OPEC in 2019, ostensibly as a “business decision” to support its focus on developing liquid natural gas (LNG) exports, but more likely because several other OPEC members were blockading Qatar at the time. The Saudi-led blockade, which lasted three years, was imposed because the other states thought Qatar had grown too close to Iran, and was working to destabilize the other Gulf states to further Iran’s agenda.

The UAE’s rift with the rest of OPEC became apparent in the summer of 2021, when the Emiratis vetoed a deal to release more oil into the market.

The UAE complained that the “baseline” levels of oil production for the cartel did not properly recognize the huge output of the Emirates, so production caps tended to hurt them much more than the other members.

The UAE said it had agreed to the low pandemic-era baseline in 2020 because it was only supposed to last for two years. Instead of a temporary increase of production to goose the pandemic-ravaged world markets, the UAE wanted a permanent increase to its production baseline — an increase the Emiratis invested heavily to prepare for.

Production quotas remained a sore spot with the UAE for the next five years, and other members grumbled about them as well. Ecuador quit OPEC in 2020, and Angola quit in 2024, due to production quota disputes.

The UAE’s departure leaves the cartel with 11 members — one of which is still Iran, despite its unprovoked military and economic attacks on other members. The UAE is currentlyOPEC’s fourth-largest producer, so its departure will be keenly felt.

OPEC experienced one of its biggest supply shocks in history during the war with Iran, losing about 7.88 billion barrels per day (bpd) in March. The cartel’s plans to recover from that shock will be difficult to implement if the UAE does not play along, and two other members have become problematic: Iran and Venezuela.

Barron’s speculated on Tuesday that the UAE’s departure could spell the end for OPEC and OPEC+ because the cartels will no longer have the ability to control world oil prices effectively.

An industry strategist suggested the UAE might have split from OPEC to give it more latitude to increase production when the United States asks for it, in the hope of receiving economic and military aid from the U.S. in return.

“The UAE’s exit will diminish the influence of Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s de facto leader, and the broader framework that includes Russia and other non-OPEC producers. Riyadh has traditionally served as OPEC’s swing producer, using its spare capacity and diplomatic influence to hold the group together, but that depends on members accepting Saudi leadership,” Barron’s noted.

This disruption of Saudi influence would be a feature, not a bug, to the UAE. The leftist American newspaper the New York Times (NYT) pointed to the “festering tensions between the Emirates and Saudi Arabia,” including tensions from the UAE pursuing a closer relationship with Israel and backing a separatist group in Yemen.

The UAE is also said to be displeased with the passive Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Arab League responses to Iran’s attacks, complaining openly about the failure of the rickety “containment” policies those organizations have pursued for Iran.

Many Americans might have missed the significance of the UAE exit because it hardly registered in financial markets. Brent crude barely flinched, which is understandable because the Strait of Hormuz disruption is so dominant right now that OPEC governance is a secondary story for oil traders. But for the longer-term architecture of global energy and finance, this may be the most consequential move so far this the year.

The immediate implications are clear enough. The UAE has 4.8 million barrels a day of production capacity but was capped at roughly 3.4 million under OPEC quotas. It is among the world’s lowest-cost producers. It can bypass the Hormuz blockade through overland pipelines. Free from the cartel, it will have both the incentive and the ability to ramp up output, which is good news for anyone who wants lower oil prices, including the Trump administration.

Gulf OPEC delegates have warned that the exit could spur more defections, as several members have long chafed at Saudi dominance. If the UAE can leave and pump freely, the incentive for staying inside the cartel and deferring to Riyadh erodes fast.

I’m a firefighter, and what I saw yesterday in the streets of Paris broke my heart.

We responded around 10 p.m., after the call for a dumpster fire that was escalating. We thought it was just a simple evening incident.

We arrived on the scene, and it was hell. Paris, my city, the one where I grew up, where I did my first shifts, had become a war zone. Black smoke everywhere, screams, explosions from mortars. Groups of young people, often from immigrant backgrounds, hooded, organized, charging at law enforcement like on a battlefield.


I saw fellow police officers getting lynched with iron bars. I saw a police car pelted with stones as we were just stepping out to put out a fire that was threatening families. We were set upon by rioters who screamed at us, calling us “dogs.” We were just trying to save lives, and we became targets.

I picked up a 14-year-old kid, face covered in blood, who was crying as he said he’d followed “the big guys” just “for fun.” I saw a mother, shutters closed, begging us to protect her children while everything downstairs was being smashed. Shattered storefronts, looted shops, burning cars… all of it under the pretext of “celebrating” something.

Celebrating isn’t breaking things.

Is this France in 2026? A country where you can’t go out at night without risking your life? A country where entire neighborhoods are handed over to clans that respect neither our laws, nor our history, nor our firefighters, nor our police? Where we watch helplessly as our capital, a symbol of light and culture, is turned into a playground for barbarians who spit on the hand that feeds them?

That night, coming home at 6 a.m., still covered in soot and sweat, I cried like a child. Not from exhaustion. From rage and sadness. For my children. For my injured colleagues. For this country I love and that’s letting itself die.

The EU’s new Migration Pact will become fully applicable in 8 days. The new law will give the European Commission more power over which EU member states will have to take in more asylum seekers or pay significant sums for the asylum seekers’ stay in Europe (the so-called mandatory solidarity mechanism).

On June 12th, the new responsibility rules will replace the Dublin Mechanism which used to decide which countries should deal with specific asylum cases. The old rule was that the first country an asylum seeker enters in Europe is the country that should process his asylum application. Brussels has presented the new system as a “more harmonised European asylum and migration management framework” based on migrant relocation quotas.

The asylum seeker who sparked huge riots in Belfast by trying to behead a local has been named as Hadi Alodid. He’s from Khartoum in Sudan. The city is currently under control of the Muslim Brotherhood-allied Sudanese Armed Forces. Beheadings are an Islamic specialty.

On October 15th, the European Commission will for the first time publish the full European Annual Asylum and Migration Report and its assessment of migratory pressure on each Member State. This launches the new standard annual migration management cycle which begins with data collection from Member States and EU agencies on migration.

The Commission then issues the Report and pressure classifications (countries will be classified as under pressure, at risk or facing a significant migratory pressure) The Commission will then propose the Annual Solidarity Pool, meaning a number of quote migrants that should be shared by EU member states. A High-Level Solidarity Forum will be organized at the end of the year where member states pledge their contributions.

The solidarity pool is a permanent and mandatory mechanism. Contributing states can choose between either receiving their quota migrants, pay €20,000 per non-relocated migrant or take alternative costly measures such as offering operational support, capacity building (e.g. infrastructure, training and equipment for borders and reception). For 2026, the pool was set at 21,000 migrant quota relocations or €420 million.

From 2027, the regulation sets a minimum reference of 30,000 relocations and €600 million, with no fixed upper limit. The size of the Solidarity Pool will depend on the European Commission’s assessed migratory pressure from the number of migrant arrivals and needs of frontline states. It means that if a 2015 European Migration Crisis scenario would be repeatedly at an even larger scale, such as the sudden arrival of for example 10 million asylum seekers in a single year, Brussels won’t stop them at the border but rather take them in and relocate them across EU member states.

Those states will then process their asylum claims and decide on whether to grant them asylum or issue them deportation orders. However, as we all know, most deportation orders are today impossible to execute as migrants either don’t provide their real identities, their home states refuse to take them back or European courts issue rulings saying that their deportation to their home country would be inhumane and out their human rights at risk.

 

While EU Member States will retain implementation roles and will have some ability to choose how to tackle their quota of the migrant Solidary Pool, the framework centralises key elements under EU law, giving the European Commission greater influence over the asylum policies of member states.

 

This shifts from purely national control of migration toward collective EU governance in asylum policy, which reduces individual Member State sovereignty in this area in exchange for burden-sharing at an EU level.

Trump ‘cancels strikes’, says deal ‘approved’

  • United States President Donald Trump says he has cancelled planned strikes and bombings against Iran after discussions were allegedly approved by the “highest level” of the Iranian leadership. There has been no confirmation from Iran.
  • Earlier, Trump had warned that the US would hit Iran “very hard” tonight, adding that Washington will take over Iran’s Kharg ⁠Island and ⁠other oil ⁠infrastructure points.

Tehran targets Bahrain, Kuwaiti bases after new US strikes

  • The United States military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) earlier launched attacks “against multiple targets in Iran”, saying the strikes were in “self-defense”, as well as in response to “Iran’s unwarranted and continued aggression”.
  • Iranian media reported sounds of explosions in several locations, including the port city of Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island and the southern towns of Sirik and Minab. Air defences were also activated in western Tehran, according to reports.
  • Iran’s Mehr news agency reports that Iran’s military has ordered the complete closure of the Hormuz Strait to all vessels, including oil tankers and commercial vessels.

The Belfast knifing victim remains in serious condition in hospital after a savage, medieval knife attack in north Belfast left him with catastrophic injuries, including the loss of his left eye, severe damage to his right eye, deep cuts all over his face, and lacerations to his back.

The victim, a man in his 40s, was attacked Monday night on Kinnaird Avenue, a residential street near Antrim Road. Police said he suffered significant eye injuries, and serious slash wounds to his face and back.

A 30-year-old Sudanese national, Hadi Alodid, has been charged with attempted murder, possession of an article with a blade or point in a public place, and making threats to kill. He appeared at Laganside Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody.

The asylum seeker who sparked huge riots in Belfast by trying to behead a local has been named as Hadi Alodid. He’s from Khartoum in Sudan. The city is currently under control of the Muslim Brotherhood-allied Sudanese Armed Forces. Beheadings are an Islamist specialty.
