But history is not a slogan. And the record, as historians like Thomas F. Madden have patiently and extensively shown, is far more complicated—and far less convenient for those in the Columbia University facility lounge.

The First Crusade was not launched into a vacuum. For four centuries before a single Frankish knight set foot in Jerusalem, Christian lands had been conquered by Islamic armies. Syria. Palestine. Egypt. North Africa. Asia Minor. Once-vibrant Christian regions—home to ancient churches, bishops, and martyrs—fell one by one. People were either slaughtered or subordinated and taxed.

And by the eleventh century, the Byzantine Empire, heir to Rome in the East, was reeling. After the catastrophic defeat at Manzikert in 1071, much of Anatolia—Christian for a thousand years—was lost to Muslims. Around the same time, pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem reported harassment and far worse. Constantinople sent a desperate plea westward.

The Crusade began, not as a war of conversion, but as a war of response.

Madden and other serious scholars remind us: medieval Christians did not think of the Crusades as imperial adventures. They saw them as armed pilgrimages—acts of penance undertaken at enormous personal cost. Nobles mortgaged estates. Many never returned. There was no loot waiting in Europe; there were debts, widows, and ruined families.

And contrary to the caricature, the Crusaders did not set out to convert Muslims at sword point. In fact, forced conversion was explicitly rejected by Church authorities. The goal was the recovery of lands long held by Christians and the protection of pilgrims—not the Islamization of Europe in reverse.

Were there atrocities? Yes. Jerusalem in 1099 was a bloodbath. Medieval warfare was brutal by modern standards, whether the combatants were Christian or Muslim. But brutality was not unique to one side. When Jerusalem fell to Saladin in 1187, it was the climax of a century of counter-offensive jihad against the Crusader states.

The larger point is this: the Crusades were part of a long struggle over territory and survival—not an unprovoked act of Western aggression. And here is the uncomfortable counterfactual: Had Western Europe not answered Byzantium’s call, had it not pushed back—however imperfectly—would Europe have remained Christian?

In the eleventh century, Islamic civilization was militarily ascendant. Christian lands had been shrinking for centuries. Spain was largely under Muslim rule. Sicily had been conquered.

Anatolia was slipping away. If that momentum had continued unchecked, the Mediterranean might have become entirely an Islamic sea. Instead, the Crusades stalled that advance. They reopened routes. They tied down forces that might otherwise have pressed further west. They bought time—time for Europe to consolidate, to grow, to eventually turn outward in other directions, becoming one of the most expansive and influential civilizations in history.

One need not romanticize the Crusades to acknowledge this. They were not pure. They were not tidy. They were not the moral equal of modern liberal democracy. They were medieval. But they were also, in large measure, defensive.

So that’s why I say: Thank God for the Crusades.

It is not to celebrate bloodshed. It is to recognize that civilizations sometimes survive because men believed their homes, their faith, and their families are worth defending. And if they didn’t, well then, Jon Sobieski may not have even had the opportunity to save Western Civilization from the Turks in 1683 with his epic Polish cavalry charge at Vienna, because that civilization may have already been lost.

It is easy, from the safety of the twenty-first century, to condemn the eleventh. It is harder—but more honest—to ask what would have happened had no one answered the call. History is not a morality play with cardboard villains. It is a struggle for survival, fought by flawed men in hard times. And sometimes, the survival of a civilization turns on whether it is willing to fight at all.
