Networking Windows 7 and XP

I know that this works on a 32 bit install since that’s what I am using, but do not know about a 64 bit install.

Windows 7 and Vista use a protocol known as a “Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder” component. The LLTD component is not preinstalled in XP.

Although XP can be successfully networked with Vista and Windows 7 without it, I found that it has made the experience easier and more reliable to install LLTD to XP. What it does is permit the XP computers to be readily discovered on the network and “show up” in the network map (Network Folder) in Vista and Windows 7, provided that you are using the same Workgroup name and have File and Printer sharing enabled.

There are 2 different means to achieve this, depending on what Service Pack your install of XP is using.

If you are running XP with SP2, then you can download and install the LLTD component here: http://www.microsoft…;displaylang=en

If you are running XP with SP3, then a Hotfix is needed which can be downloaded here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120

To check that each of your computers has the LLTD protocol running, in the Networking Folder on each computer, right click the networking adapter that you use and choose Properties. Look in the list for “Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder”.
If it isn’t listed, then click Add, then Protocol. Highlight Microsoft, then click the LLTD entry. If it’s not there, then you are on an XP machine and it needs to be installed.

The 32-bit or 64-bit Question

With every Windows 7 installation, whether its upgrade or full install, comes the option for a 32bit or 64bit operating system. While I cannot go into detail as to how memory (RAM) works on your machine I can tell you that it boils down to how much memory you need to properly use your computer. If your working memory usage on your machine is under 3 Gigs then going with a 32bit installation should work fine for you. For users that require more memory for computing (video editing/programming/3d modeling/etc) a 64 bit installation will allow them to use up to 8 gigs of memory (RAM). Most computer users, even video editors and programmers, can perform most functions with modest hardware capabilities but the cost for RAM in most markets is relatively cheap and can exponentially increase productivity for computer professionals.

Office Professional 2010 Beta!

Windows has opened up Free download beta versions of the new Office suite 2010 this preview is using Microsofts new “streaming” download technology. The beta version includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and One note. Microsoft so far has not set a price for the new edition.

I have not been able to really put 2010 to the test but i did post a few screen shots below. The download/install was painless and the installation did not interrupt my Microsoft 2007 installation. The beta was installed on windows 7 and was up and running in less then 5 minutes. This is due to the Click-To-Run system that streams pieces of the suite to the users computer allowing them to be up and running in no time.

The changes are very minimal, but the one noticeable difference is the big round button in the left hand corner. This has been replaced with the word “File” button.

Windows 7 on HP Tablet PC Notebook

I thought I would give Windows 7 a shot and install it on my HP TX1000 Touch Screen Notebook. I have to say couldn’t be more happy with how Windows 7 is performing. The new Operating System worked right from the start, no drivers were needed and I was able to start drawing in the windows paint program immediately.

I have posted a few Screen Shots below.

How to dual-boot Windows 7 on Vista Computer

I came across a great How to video on a blog named “Mike Mclin” (See link below) who made a very thorough video on how to dual-boot windows 7 beta on a vista computer. The video will walk you through all the steps on how to dual-boot windows 7 on the same hard drive as your windows vista operating system. This will not effect your current vista setup and will give you a chance to play around with the new features of windows 7.
