Last week we had the privilege of having Christen Forster visit us at Living Waters Church. I had met Christen last November at the Windsor Castle day of impartation and at the Under an Open Heaven conference that followed it.

This guy is an awesome teacher. We had four incredible meetings where we saw several people being healed and many others delivered from bondage.

The really cool thing for me however was when we dialed-down and just shared over a coffee or a beer. I was really struck about how similarly we are both wired. Time and again he would share his opinion on an issue, or on a particular way of interpreting a certain text, and it would be bang-on with how I tend to think.

We have big dreams here in Living Waters Church, and we are exploring ways of how Christen, and his team at River Church can be a part of this God-thing.

I was finally doing a bit of housekeeping on my Flickr account (Which I had abandoned for a while in favour of just using FB) and managed to organize some of the photos that I had of Living Waters Church going back to 2003.

Although it is by no means a chronicle of the church’s history – and although there are glaring gaps when a lot was happening and no photographs were taken – it neverhteless felt good to see a photographic timeline since 2003 – the various stages of our development and growth. I am a grateful man today to have been allowed to experience these baby steps and this growth.

We have just finished a couple of days with one of my favourite people in the world: Pastor Tom Rowe.

He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers – Malachi 4:6

When a person like Tom Rowe visits….. you sit down…and listen…. and take notes. That’s what 56 years in ministry gives you I guess….. the “gravity” to speak…. the “voice” that causes young hatchlings in ministry like myself, to take notes.

We tend to place a lot of currency on the polished dynamic young preachers and speakers. That is good, and they certainly have their place, but it is also high time for the Church to recognize spiritual fathers in addition to the vibrant and dynamic speakers. There is an anointing that wows you, and that is awesome….. and then there is also the quality that says “I’ve been there.” I have purposed in my life to pursue the powerful anointing of the Holy Spirit in my life…… I want to pursue it with passion, intensity, focus and persistence – what is the point of it all if I don’t? I also recognize the need to surround myself with “been there” people – “fathers”, like Tom Rowe.

During Tom’s visits I LOVE the word He brings. I usually say that his ministry is a deep well that I turn to often. However I also find myself wondering whether I end up gleaning MORE from our conversations during the margins of his visit – conversations over a cup of coffee, whilst driving, whilst taking a walk – than I do during his sermons and teachings, deep and rich though they always are.

There comes a point when a pastor becomes a pastor’s pastor – Tom is, for many, a pastor’s pastor.

Some time ago I wrote about the gray-hair test. These thoughts are resonating in me again. I proposed the following ministry timeline:

Childhood to 30 years: These are the formative years where you get rooted and grounded in the motivations behind your mission, and also get competent enough to fulfill it in an excellent way.

30 to 50 years: These are the performing years, where the actual job is done and the mission is advanced during your tenure.

50 to 70 years: These are the mentoring years (Reference the gray-hair test), where you take young aspiring leaders under your wing and nurture and mentor them in order to reproduce yourself in them.

70 years and over : These are the legacy years. During this season in your life you’d better get real busy and write as many books as you can, recording your legacy for as many generations to come as possible. During these years you are a mentor to mentors, a pastor to pastors, and a much needed source of wisdom, guidance and inspiration.

Thoughts?

This is an interview with Bill Johnson on the 700 club. There is a deep well of wisdom and experience here. He explains what happened to him when he surrendered 100% to God when he was in his 20s.

Praying at fixed times during the day was by-and-large rejected by the Protestant Reformation. A the time, anything that smelled of Rome was rejected. In my opinion the baby was thrown out with the dirty bath-water.

The biblical text is clear, it teaches us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thes. 5:17). Many think that this is not achievable outside of taking monastic vows and living a cloistered lifestyle. As for me, I believe that there is tremendous value in connecting regularly with the Heart of God, connecting several times a day – a rhythm of regularly stopping everything that you are doing and just concentrating on God’s heart.

Praying at fixed times during the day was by-and-large rejected by the Protestant Reformation. A the time, anything that smelled of Rome was rejected, with it the monastic movement and its lifestyle of the Divine Office – fixed-hour prayer. In my opinion the baby was thrown out with the dirty bath-water.

However, praying at fixed times during the day was not essentially a Roman Catholic tradition, although the monastic tradition had championed it and modeled it for centuries. Fixed-hour prayer was a Jewish tradition long before it ever became a Christian one.

Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry aloud, And He shall hear my voice – Psalm 55:17

In the early church the tradition of praying at fixed hours throughout the day was continued to the point where we read in Acts Chapter 3 that Peter and John performed a miracle on a lame man when they were on their way to the temple to prayer “at the hour of prayer” (Acts 3:1).

I have begun an experiment with this notion of praying at fixed times during the day. I am exploring whether this lifestyle can be pursued outside of the monastic tradition – more specifically, whether this is doable whilst holding down a job, having a family, studying for a degree and also Pastoring a church. If praying without ceasing is in the book it is something that is not only doable but necessary. This puts prayer at the centre of life. Prayer now becomes something that cannot be appended onto a busy schedule but rather something that must take the centre and have everything else revolve around it.

For this to become sustainable in the long term I need to add fuel to my prayer. For this I am taking a leaf out of the monastic tradition and using the bible as a prayer book to mull over the sacred text, musing, meditating and savouring every word and then praying this all back to God.

If you wish to look into this further, my message included below of 30th August 2009, “3 Things to Stoke the Fire of Revival” touches on this issue as well as the power of joy and the power of thankfulness.

We must acknowledge that all suffering is valid pain. The suffering in rich nations is internal psychological pain. It is extremely relevant; it is deep.
In the “too-good-not-to-post” department, the following is a bricklayer’s accident actual (verbatim) report, which was printed in the newsletter of the Australian equivalent of the Workers’ Compensation board. This apparently is a true story.

Dear Sir
“I am writing in response to your request for additional information in Block 3 of the accident report form. I put “poor planning” as the cause of my accident. You asked for a fuller explanation and I trust the following details will be sufficient.

I am a bricklayer by trade. On the day of the accident, I was working alone on the roof of a new six story building. When I completed my work, I found that I had some bricks left over which, when weighed later were found to be slightly in excess of 500 lbs. Rather than carry the bricks down by hand, I decided to lower them in a barrel by using a pulley, which was attached to the side of the building on the sixth floor. Securing the rope at ground level, I went up to the roof, swung the barrel out and loaded the bricks into it.

Then I went down and untied the rope, holding it tightly to ensure a slow descent of the bricks. You will note in Block 11 of the accident report form that I weigh 135lbs. Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope Needless to say, I proceeded at a rapid rate up the side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met the barrel which was now proceeding downward at an equal, impressive speed.

This explained the fractured skull, minor abrasions and the broken collar bone, as listed in section 3 of the accident report form.

Slowed only slightly, I continued my rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers of my right hand were two knuckles deep into the pulley. Fortunately by this time I had regained my presence of mind and was able to hold tightly to the rope, in spite of beginning to experience a great deal of pain. At approximately the same time, however, the barrel of bricks hit the ground and the bottom fell out of the barrel. Now devoid of the weight of the bricks, that barrel weighed approximately 50 lbs. I refer you again to my weight.

As you can imagine, I began a rapid descent, down the side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met the barrel coming up. This accounts for the two fractured ankles, broken tooth and several lacerations of my legs and lower body. Here my luck began to change slightly. The encounter with the barrel seemed to slow me enough to lessen my injuries when I fell into the pile of bricks and fortunately only three vertebrae were cracked. I am sorry to report, however, as I lay there on the pile of bricks, in pain, unable to move, I again lost my composure and presence of mind and let go of the rope and I lay there watching the empty barrel begin its journey back down on to me, this explains the two broken legs.

I hope this answers your inquiry.

We have just finished our first conference! We trust this will be the first of many. For three days, people who were hungry for the Fire of Revival and Transformation gathered in the Ince’s Hall theatre in Gibraltar to press-in for more of the Lord’s presence.

Our three nights saw different expressions of worship, from local sensation U-Turn leading the first night, to the awesome Jaydan Gomila (Associate Pastor and worship leader at Living Waters Church) together with Martin Hosken, leading the second night, and Dutch group “Syncopate” bringing a fresh and wild sound the third night! Wow!!

Our speaker for this conference was Mattheus Van der Steen, a Revivalist who is being used mightily to release God’s glory over the nations. His ministry, Touch, Reach and Impact the Nations (TRIN) is instrumental in bringing Revival in Holland and other nations as well as in the care of widows and orphans in third world countries. With a most powerful anointing He exhorted us to go “lower still” and keep a heart of a child before God. That is the only way to keeping the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

We saw many catching this fire and being powerfully touched by God. After the final impartation service, I believe a fire has been ignited in men’s lives, a fire that cannot be put out, a fire that will spread and change a whole city, a region, nations and continents.

If you were blessed in any way during this conference, please email your testimonies to Jaydan at jaydan@livingwatersgib.com.

In the Old Testament there is a special blessing or declaration that the priests used to proclaim over the children of Israel. As priests, or go-betweens, they faced the people of Israel representing the Lord their God….. then they turned around and faced the Lord their God representing the children of Israel. As go-betweens, standing in the gap and representing the Lord’s agenda, they had a duty to invoke the name of the Lord upon Israel. They used a specific wording for this blessing that went like this:

“The LORD bless you and keep you;
the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.” -(Numbers 6:22-27)

Through this blessing their words prescribed the following:

The Lord bless you: Prosperity both in the material and spiritual sense.

…and keep you: Divine Keeping/Protection

the Lord make His face shine upon you: This speaks of the Lord delighting himself in you!

…and be gracious to you: Grace-fullness in every area of your life!

the LORD turn his face toward you: Looking upon you with favour

…and give you peace: Giving you the Shalom of Heaven

The Hebrew word for “peace”, Shalom, is defined as: שלום –

Completeness

Safety/Soundness

Welfare/Health/Prosperity

Peace/Quiet/Tranquillity/Contentment

Friendship

When these priests invoked the name of the Lord upon Israel, the scriptures say that they were placing the name of the Lord upon them and the result of this was that that the Lord would then move-in and bless Israel. Their declaration released a prophetic “corridor” that God used to move-in and bless.

I believe that this priestly function served as a prototype of what God intended to do when the good news of God’s Covenant embraced the gentiles. I would like to submit to you that, in this era of the New Covenant, all believers are now priests (1 Pet 2:9; Rev 1:6; Rev 5:10)…. and as priests we have the duty to invoke the name of the Lord upon our families, our marriages, our children, workplaces, schools, Governments, civic leaders, towns, cities, nations……..

…… I believe this will create the “space” that God needs to move-in and bless us, protect us, delight in us, filling our land with His Grace, His Favoiur…. His SHALOM.

Start to powerfully declare this blessing today…….. and do not stop…….. until something happens.

Lessons learnt from recent visit to Living Waters Church by Wytze Valkema of the Daniel Prayer Network

Things have been a bit of a blur for me lately with so much to do and so little time to do it in! So, in the spirit of this time lapse that I find myself in (Just where did the past three weeks go?) I want to share a little on a visitor/speaker that we recently had at Living Waters Church.

Wytze Valkema is an awesome guy from Holland who leads the Daniel Prayer Network. What does this guy do? He prays. That’s about it. He prays…. day-in, day-out, 24/7. He visited us during the second week in July and I can say that I am continuing to reap the benefits from his visit……big time. Some of the things that he spoke on really resonated in my heart and continue to speak to me even now. This guy is really anointed and speaks with an incredible authority that can only be obtained by spending time beholding the Lord in prayer.

How has he impacted me? Although I find it hard to put into words how deeply he has spoken into my life, I guess that he has come through at a time when I needed a deep word from the Lord to change me. Some things are hard to describe – they need to be tasted. And so I have tasted part of the message that he has brought and it has left me hungry for more.

As a direct result of his visit we are starting to see some breakthroughs in how we do intercession, and prayer, and our weekly meetings in the prayer room have taken on a very interesting dynamic. We are also now actively looking for premises that we could use as a prayer room – a prayer room without an agenda, where the only agenda is Psalms 27:4:

One thing I have desired of the Lord,
That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord
All the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord,
And to inquire in His temple.

One really practical consequence of this focus is that I realise that if I am going after “One thing” I cannot have a multitude of “things” on my plate. As a result I am taking active steps to de-clutter my life right now. This is HUGE!!!! I am weaning myself off SO MANY to-do lists, tasks, projects, inputs, media, information sources, entertainment, etc. in order to free my time to live a lifestyle of One Thing. That’s my big take-home benefit from Wytze’s visit. I encourage you to do a similar personal audit to see how many “things” you need to deal with.

Oh,what I would do to have
the kind of faith it takes
To climb out of this boat I’m in
Onto the crashing waves
To step out of my comfort zone
Into the realm of the unknown
Where Jesus is,
And he’s holding out his hand

But the waves are calling out my name
and they laugh at me
Reminding me of all the times
I’ve tried before and failed
The waves they keep on telling me
time and time again
“Boy, you’ll never win,
you’ll never win.”

But the Voice of truth tells me a different story
the Voice of truth says “do not be afraid!”
and the Voice of truth says “this is for My glory”
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the Voice of truth

Oh, what I would do
to have the kind of strength it takes
To stand before a giant
with just a sling and a stone
Surrounded by the sound
of a thousand warriors
shaking in their armor
Wishing they’d have had the strength to stand

But the giant’s calling out
my name and he laughs at me
Reminding me of all the times
I’ve tried before and failed
The giant keeps on telling me
time and time again
“Boy you’ll never win,
you’ll never win.”

But the voice of truth tells me a different story
the Voice of truth says “do not be afraid!”
and the Voice of truth says “this is for My glory”
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the Voice of truth

But the stone was just the right size
to put the giant on the ground
and the waves they don’t seem so high
from on top of them looking down
I will soar with the wings of eagles
when I stop and listen to the sound of Jesus
singing over me

But the Voice of truth tells me a different story
The Voice of truth says “do not be afraid!”
And the Voice of truth says “this is for my glory”
Out of all the voices calling out to me (calling out to me)
I will choose to listen and believe (I will choose to listen and believe)
I will choose to listen and believe the Voice of truth

I will listen and believe
I will listen and believe the Voice of truth
I will listen and believe
‘Cause Jesus you are the Voice of truth
And I will listen to you.. oh you are the Voice of truth

Hailed as a modern version of C.S.Lewis’ “Mere Christianity”, NT Wright’s work strikes me, not so much as an apologetic of the Christian faith (although it could indeed be that) but as a gift to the Church to help her be the Church. The central theme of the book is that there are four fundamental longings of the human heart, which Wright describes as “echoes of a voice”: a longing of justice, a quest for spirituality, a need for relationship, and a delight in beauty. These four echoes resonate hauntingly within human hearts and are “strange signposts pointing beyond the landscape of our contemporary culture and into the unknown” we hear these echoes, but not the voice…. we seem to grasp them… but alas they slip away! – At the end of this road we find that those signposts point us to this one speaker whose voice we heard only as faint haunting echoes…..Jesus. In Jesus we find our longing for justice fulfilled, our quest for spirituality satisfied, our need for relationship completed and our delight in beauty realized.

If these four “echoes” are its central theme, Wright addresses these within a framework of different views of Heaven (he calls them “options”). Option 1 is the pantheistic image of everything on earth carrying the divine. Option 2 is the root of the deist and gnostic image of heaven being a very beautiful place very far away and separated from this cruel and dark world – with the divine sometimes intervening in human affairs. Option 3 is the Judeo-Christian view of Heaven being different to Earth but near, indeed overlapping and intersecting it at specific times and in specific places. It is amazing how much of the first two options have inadvertently crept into Christian thought and theology, providing for very unhelpful attitudes, thoughts and positions. This Option-3 framework sets the tone and tempo for much of Wright’s ensuing work. It is critical for the reader to grasp this if the book is going to make a lasting impact on him or her.

It is this big vision of Heaven being a real place that intersects and overlaps Earth, and God’s ultimate purpose of joining these two together to be one, that in my opinion makes for a great work by this theological heavyweight. It is within this framework, in my opinion, that the tenets of the Christian message and mission start to make remarkable sense: God is indeed intending to put the world to rights (justice) and remarkably has already begun to do this, firstly in the resurrection of Jesus (an advance signpost and prototype of the general “Resurrection” at the end of the age), and secondly in the ongoing work and mission of the Church.

In Part-2 of this blog post we shall cover the specific instances where Heaven meets Earth in the life of the Church!
