Vintage Medical Cabinet Used as a Jewelry Organizer and Vanity

No, Miss Bliss, Ron and I are NOT playing doctor and nurse, though I did get a chuckle out of your comment! Sarah got it right when she suggested I was using the vintage medical cabinet in the bedroom nook as a jewelry holder and vanity area!

If you open the doors, you can see a mirror, which is very helpful for putting in earrings, etc.

A vintage bunsen burner stand is used to hold necklaces, bracelets, etc. This is the same stand I used for my whimsical bird's nest display last year.

The brackets are movable and allow for hanging different length jewelry.

A hand-crafted bowl nestles perfectly to hold rings and other baubles.

This "listen" necklace above was crafted by jewelry designer Gretchen at Mimi Toria's Designs. She and Lani at Cottage Elements gifted it to me for my birthday a few years ago.

The vintage tin box was a junk find. I love it's colors and patterns.

This is the drawer before. It shows the original green color of the desk. No, I didn't paint the desk. It was white when I found it. I think the green is the same as the pair of vintage medical cabinets I have in the studio/office. Don't you think?

I lined the drawer with cork and then sorted jewelry using the vintage milk glass dental trays I showed you a couple weeks ago...

Instead having everything tangled and jumbled up, everything is easily visible. It saves so much time getting ready in the morning! It's also easier to put things away!

Alright! So spill it! How do you organize your jewelry? Is it piled in a drawer? Hanging on something? Did you DIY a special jewelry display piece? Did you get rid of all your jewelry just so you didn't have to organize it?

The Nook Goes Vintage Medical Chic

In the last post, I teased you with the photo above. I also showed you how this nook was created when we added a closet (see before and after in photos below) during our master bedroom renovation a couple years ago.

With the addition of the second closet, we now had this nook. Since 2009, it has seen plenty of action as it was transformed season after season. I put together a timeline of the nook so that you could see what I mean...

What does it look like now?

With a vintage medical cabinet and coordinating medical stool,

the nook now has what I'm calling a "vintage medical chic" appeal...

{okay, I'm not so sure about the chic, but vintage and medical are accurate!}

Oddly enough, this cabinet has seen it's own series of transformations. It started off like this...

then to the living room with some decor...

then the wood cabinet base was changed out for a metal desk...

Now, it is in the master bedroom nook

and being use for a whole new purpose!

Antique Display Cabinet

I must say...I had a pretty good junking weekend last weekend. First, I found that campaign dresser, which has a new home in the dining room. I also scored that set of Anne of Green Gables books. THEN I picked up this bad boy.

It was at a local antique shop. It had been there for quite a long while...we're talking years. I've always admired it and had an idea for it, but the price was a bit prohibitive. The vendor was actually in the store, so I asked if the "firm" price was actually firm. Turns out that it wasn't! :)

Which means that this beauty came home with me. What is it, you ask? Well...

It's an antique bathroom ware display from the SAN-O-LA line from Art Brass Co. of New York. In the photo below, it's sitting behind the sofa. That should give you an idea of it's size.

It would have displayed bathroom accessories such as soap holders, tumbler holders, toothbrush holders, etc. I found the ad below that shows some of the antique accessories.

We are building up to a long-overdue master bath reno this spring/summer. The display cabinet will be incorporated into the design. There are a couple options I'm still considering as far as placement and use in the master bath, so I'll keep you posted as decisions get made!! :)

Garage Sale Books

Along with the vintage campaign dresser, I picked up this collection of Anne of Green Gables Books at a garage sale last weekend. I was told that it does not represent the complete collection, but it seems like a good start! I've watched some of the Anne of Green Gables movies, but I have never read any of the books. I'm looking forward to digging into them!

From Little House on the Prairie, to Pride and Prejudice, to the complete Janette Oke series, I love any stories that take place in the "olden days." I grew up reading every night before bed. I still enjoy that, though sometimes I partake in some non-fiction and self-help books these days. When it comes to reading books, I prefer the old fashioned paper book, too, unless I'm traveling. Since I am on the computer so much for work and blogging, my eyes need the luxury of some paper!

I'm starting a new pinboard, called Favorite Books & Movies, to capture all the books and movies I've read/watched or that I want to read/watch. It will be a kind of recommended books/movies page. I'd better get pinning!

What kinds of books are you into? Fiction or non-fiction? Paper or e-book? Favorite authors? Favorite series? Do you have any recommendations?

The Campaign Dresser and the Driftwood Whale

Did you enjoy the Campaign Furniture pinboard from yesterday? Didn't those girls do amazing things with their campaign dressers?

I anticipate a future makeover on this campaign dresser I found last weekend, but I had to find a home for it until that time comes. Right now, it's moved into the dining room as a sideboard! I rambled around the house grabbing things to add to the vignette. Here's what I came up with:

The brass on the dresser ties into the gold in the antique sand-painted American Railway sign that was already above the doorway. I pulled the salvaged convex mirror from the guest room. The Ralph Lauren lamps had been in the dining room previously, but most recently had been in the living room. With their gold/brass tones, I pulled them back into the dining room for this vignette.

Taking center stage is this driftwood whale from, of course, TJMaxx. I loved it the instant I saw it!

So ready for spring/summer!

Vintage Campaign Dresser Comes to the Cottage

Lookie what I found this weekend! Isn't she a beaut? I've been drooling over campaign furniture for a couple years now. Finally, I found a vintage campaign dresser for the cottage!

Aren't they gorgeous? They are the perfect inspirations for figuring out what I'll be doing with my beautiful dresser. It definitely needs some freshening up! It might not get painted until the spring/summer, but that doesn't mean I can plan ahead!

Drywall Repair Progress

Do you ever notice that projects go more fun when you have some music playing? It's so true! At times, I like peace and quiet while I work. Other times, I like a little TV in the background. Most times, when it comes to DIY, Ron and I have some kind of music jamming on the radio. Enter...the DeWalt Worksite Radio from Rockler.com. Not only do you get music, but you also get all kinds of cool features like being able to charge your DeWalt batteries from the radio itself. What? So cool! The music and functionality makes some of those more tedious DIY projects a bit more fun!

Which brings me to my next topic...drywall repair. Ever done that? Neither have I, but Ron has! Quite a bit. Which is why he is not so fond of me changing out anything on the walls. Like a champ, he has been working on making the holes on the left into the non-holes on the right...

There's a bit more of the process to finish. Check out the video I included in my post over at The DIY Club. No, I'm not in the video! It's one I found online that explains the process Ron used to patch the holes above. Once the entire process is done, I'll add some paint and then do something with these bad boys...

Do you know what happens when you take down that shelf in the bathroom?

You are left with lots of holes in the wall!

Do you know what happens when you didn't patch the holes from a previous shelf?

You have double the holes!

And what about when you take out the plastic anchors?

You get really BIG holes!

I think they might need to be patched.

Just a bit. :)

Are you ready for a fabulous vintage junk find? I've actually had these for a couple years...stored in the garage. What took me so long to do something with them? Initially, I did not have an idea for them. By the time I did, they were difficult to get to behind the huge stack of other junk!

What are they? A whole stack of vintage dental trays. Milk glass, wouldn't you say?

I love all the different tray configurations.

I can't wait to share what I did with them. I think you are going to like it!!

Hanging Canvas Flower Valentine

Valentine's Day is near!

I've been playing around with Canvas Corp's new burlap and canvas flowers. I posted my burlap version of these valentine's a few weeks ago...Burlap & Silver Spoon Valentine.

I think this hanging canvas version is just as fun! So amazingly simple to make!

This set of features simply makes me want to be a kid again. Super fun, super creative playrooms are kicking off 2012. Okay, the first one is technically not a playroom...it's a mudroom with kid-friendly colors and features...a definite must see! The second space is an art house...yes, an actual house just for the kids' art endeavors!! The last playroom is a major room update with a decidedly grown-up feel and tons of toy storage. These kids are going to have a fun year!
