“Black and ugly as ever, however…”
Notorious BIG

When Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire begins the title character, Clareece “Precious” Jones (Gabby Sidibe), is an obese, illiterate 16 year old mother, pregnant with her father’s second child. She’s physically and verbally abused by her mother, raped by her father, and expelled from school. Saying the odds are stacked against Precious is an understatement. I felt compelled to write my thoughts on this film because, like Precious, there are several obstacles stacked against the film itself.

In January, Precious premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where the film won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. A few days later, I sat with a friend and executive of a major production/distribution company where I asked him to share his thoughts on the film. His immediate response, “Black people won’t go see it.” The reasons – the film is too dark, too ugly, and too depressing. “Black audiences go to the movies to be entertained, not depressed,” he added. I thought, since when is a good film not entertaining? But maybe this executive is on to something. When was the last successful serious-minded drama produced, directed by, and starring African-Americans? We live in the era of Madea and films like This Christmas, competent, feel-good family dramedies that, while entertaining, are easily forgettable. Whether you love or hate the film, you won’t soon forget Precious.

Yes, Precious is dark. Yes, Precious can be ugly. But I would never label a film filled with such hope depressing. Contrary to what many may have read Precious is quite funny and nimble. Sounds odd for a film about illiteracy and incest but the film’s screenplay, written by Geoffrey Fletcher, is a wonderful adaptation of Sapphire’s novel, Push. Fletcher captures the joy of teaching and discovery of learning. He and director Lee Daniels, craft Precious’ classroom scenes at Each One Teach One Alternative School (and much of the film) like a documentary. The vibrant scenes avoid easy answers and Hollywood sentimentality. Fletcher’s screenplay combines realistic dialogue with unforgettable characters.

Most obvious is Mary Jones, portrayed by comedienne Mo’Nique with ferocious angry. We have never seen Mo’Nique so raw and bruised; her final monologue both upsetting and quite heartbreaking. This performance will lead Mo’Nique to her first Academy Award nomination. Then there is pop star and diva, Mariah Carey, who completely disappears into her role as social worker, Mrs. Weiss. Paula Patton, as Precious understanding lesbian teacher, and Lenny Kravitz also make solid turns in important, if underwritten, roles.

But this film belongs to Ms. Sidibe. In her first film, she slips into Precious as if she had been preparing for this role since birth. If you have watched any of Sidibe’s televised interviews, aside from physical similarities, she and Precious don’t have much in common. Sidibe is a spirited and well-spoken young woman. Precious, on the other hand, is passive and mumbles nearly everything. If she could, Precious would simply fade into the background. Sidibe conveys so much about Precious with saying a word. Although Precious’ life is filled with tragedy there’s a light in Sidibe’s eyes and a softness to her face that’s comforting, telling us everything will be alright. It’s the best female performance I have seen all year.

If there is a weak link amongst this talented team, it’s director/producer Lee Daniels who undermines the pacing, authenticity, and truthfulness of his film, with a few jarring MTV/BET-style fantasy sequences and some clumsily edited flashbacks to her brutal rape coupled with fried food simmering in hot grease. I also take issue with his use of music. There were three pivotal scenes where the music in no way complimented the action on screen. I found myself being taken out of the drama, because the music was awkward and too loud. Aside from those missteps, I still commend Daniels for trusting his unorthodox cast to breath life into such heavy material.

Precious sums it up when she says, “The other day, I cried. I felt stupid. But you know what? Fuck that day.” And she’s right. Why harbor on the tragedy and negativity of yesterday when we can focus on the possibilities of our future? That’s what Precious is about, the infinite possibilities we as human beings are afforded regardless of our circumstances. Sure, Precious is black and to some she may be ugly, however, there’s more to her (and this film) than meets the eye. Discover this gem for yourself.

Precious: Based On The Novel Push by Sapphire is currently in limited release, showing in only 18 theaters. The film will expand nationwide in two weeks. I encourage everyone, no matter your race or ethnicity, to see this film. It’s an important American movie…oh it’s very entertaining as well.

“For this album, I told people I needed music that was really heavy, something with knock,” says Amerie. “Nothing too pretty; I wanted something that sounded `70’s-ish, when rock had a lot of soul in it, and it was still so related to the blues. And of course it needed that hip-hop element.”

Amerie debuts her 4th studio album “In Love & War” on November 3rd, 2009. It’ is the follow up to “Because I Love It” which was released internationally. “In Love & War” boast a collection of mid-tempo and funky nostalgic tracks that defines a sultry and unique sound for the R&B superstar. A blend of horns, drums and old school samples provide the basis for the album. The album fuses hip-hop, R&B, soul, funk, rock and pop into one great package. Love and the consequences thereof, are topics discussed throughout the album.

Tell Me You Love Me

The Intro track should set-up a visual picture for the entire album. “Tell Me You Love Me” is bass pounding track that is funky and groovy. Wanting the attention and affection of a man will make you beg for it. This track is definitely one to garner attention.

Heard ‘Em All [Second Single]

The 2nd single from “In Love & War” is a catchy dance tune for the clubs. Amerie loves drums and bass and she sticks to a well-written formula. The more cocky and boisterous side of Amerie comes out on this track. She has heard it all before so come with something better. One of my favorite tracks!

Dangerous

The guitar-strumming intro brings a funky retro vibe to “In Love & War.” Reminds me of an old school Jimmie Hendricks track with hair swinging everywhere. Showing Amerie’s versatility and inner rock star the track is under 3 minutes, but it could have been longer.

Higher

Amerie promised to deliver a funky retro album and I definitely see an MTV: Unplugged session in the future. Drums, guitars and funk rocks “Higher” to another level. Playing with someone’s emotions and letting her go like nothing ever happened will bring on a woman’s scorn. Good retro track to jam too…

Why R U [First Single]

Sometimes love blindsides us and we never know why we’re so attached to someone. Amerie’s vocals ride the beat of an old hip-hop track that you can beat your head to. The 1st single didn’t gain much radio airplay, but the lyrical content and smooth vibe is amazing and definitely worth mention.

Pretty Brown (Featuring Trey Songz) [Third Single]

A remake of Mint Condition’s 1992 hit “Pretty Brown Eyes,” Amerie and Trey Songz puts a 2009 spin on it and creates magic. Trey Songz puts his sensual touch on the track adding depth and range. Pretty Brown should have been the 1st single because it is smooth, soulful, and sexy. My FAVE track on the album. MUST HAVE!

More Than Love (Featuring Fabolous)

Sometimes love is not enough to keep you in a relationship. Amerie questions her commitment over a smooth beat with the help of F-A-B-O-L-O-U-S. Definitely a track that many people can relate too. MUST HAVE!

Swag Back

Amerie goes in a different direction on “Swag Back”. It sounds like a demo for a C-list pop singer. The track really doesn’t fit into the sound of the album.

You’re A Star (Interlude)

A transition piece that takes “In Love & War” into a more serious, seductive, and slow vibe. The beat is dope sounds almost like a Neptune’s production with synthesizers and drum taps.

Red Eye

Amerie is usually a mid to up-tempo type of girl. On “Red Eye” she slows it down and gives us a much more sexier side. This is for all the YouTube hip rollers and baby makers out there. Amerie seduces listeners with her smooth vocals on this track. MUST HAVE!

The Flowers

Sometimes it’s to late to make up for the past, and there is nothing you can do to make it like it was. “The Flowers” is an amazing song that is lyrically genuine and raw. This track is a seamless transition from “Red Eye” that should be used as a lesson to lovers. Amerie sounds incredible on this track.

Different People

Don’t you hate when you get in a relationship and your significant other tries to change who you are?! “Different People” sends a powerful message and Amerie voice captures the idea in a brilliant way. An old school beat accompanied by piano sets up the story effortlessly. MUST HAVE!

Dear John

Picture your girl sitting at the piano writing you a goodbye letter. “Dear John” is a farewell to cheaters. Using classical piano and strong vocals to set up the end of a relationship.

Heard ‘Em All (Remix) (Featuring Lil Wayne)

The king of remix’s Lil Wayne jumps on “Heard ‘Em All” with Amerie.

“In Love & War” is a story of the struggles we face dealing with love and relationships. Amerie’s past relationships sets the foundation for an album that relates to the experience of so many. Overall, the album is solid and should garner the attention of R&B, hip-hop, soul and funk lovers. Thank you for sharing you experiences with the fans…

“I like” – Keri Hilson

Omg Keri Hilson has done it again! I am in love all over again! She has came out of the wood works with this new song “I Like” which is produced by David Jost and Robin Gruber and its stated to have a music video in the works as well! #POW! She is really making sure that all the doubters eat their words. #BAM! She is and will forever be here TO STAY! The song goes on about her going out, dancing, meeting a guy and liking the way he makes her feel. She states “I’m losing control right now and I feel its right I like I like I like… and the world around us won’t stop turning tonight… I like I like I like” My god this woman does something to songs that only a few can i.e. Brandy. Keri’s vocals are so smooth over the track as if the song was born into her. The song is electrifying and catchy. I love the crossover appeal with this song and if Keri continues on this path it will solidify a new fan base for her. I am in love and it isn’t with a man, it’s none other than Miss Keri Baby! #BOOM!

Mario – Get Out

Look at what the Hip Hop/R&B machine crewed up and spit out, its Mario’s new album titled D.N.A. and it hit stores Tuesday, October 13, 2009! Now, I wasn’t checking for Mario due to a number of things. One of those being that I have not gotten into his style of music since “Braid My Hair” and now that I look back onto it, I don’t know why the hell I was loving that song! LOL The other one was that all the tracks that leaked were lacking a true focus of what the album was going to sound like. But anywho, the album D.N.A. has a list of hot, current, producers like Sean Garrett, The-Dream & Tricky Stewart.

With that said you would think Mario’s album would be jammed packed with hit songs out the ass but sadly enough it isn’t. #IJUSTDontSeeIt I’m so SORRY for those that were counting on him being the savior of R&B music because of his exceptional vocal ability and decent range. I just do NOT see it happening for him anytime soon with these more than OLD industry washed out songs. MALE R&B singers, we have to do better! I mean come on!!!! I know its hard out here to garner attention to your craft without selling your soul but if you are going to go that route please come with it and less with these “remixed” sounding songs that have been sung by other artist. There are so many song/artist references on this album that it hurts to listen to it #BAM!!!!

I don’t believe I have a favorite track but, the one’s I can bare to listen to are “Starlight” and “Get Out”. “Starlight” is reminiscent of an 80’s Michael Jackson song; I want to say “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” remixed 2010 version! #POW! LOL The lyrics talk of a girl that Mario is trying to “sack”, but it sounds more like he’s pleading for a one night stand! LOL But who am I to judge? I love the production but some of the adlibs and techniques he’s doing with his voice are a bit much and lose me in this song. When “Get Out” first leaked it had Ludacris on it at but since then his verse has been removed on the album version, which to me is neither a good or bad thing considering he didn’t help any! #BANG I like it because it has a heavy beat and it’s something you could possibly ride out to. I’m not really into the lyrics as they are generic, he states “this ain’t love, this ain’t human, this ain’t real, so what the fuck is we doing…?” I mean really though… is he serious? I guess so chile!

So I am asking you all to be the judge on this one. If you’re the diehard fan you claim to be then please go buy Mario’s album and support him as I believe he will need it. I do not hate him, I just don’t like his music as of lately. He has talent but what he’s doing with it is something I can’t get into #ImJustSayin!

Over the weekend, Mariah Carey performed at the Pearl at the Palms in Las Vegas. During her performance, Mariah also played host to a surprise marriage proposal for Mathew Almeida from his fiance Maurie Sherman.

According to VegasBlogs, Maurie had spoken with Mariah’s management to arrange the stage proposal and did not know whether it was going to happen until 5 minutes before the show.

While it is not legal for gay couples to marry in Vegas, there is no law that does not say you can’t make a proposal in Vegas. The Couple will officially tie the knot in Toronto, Canada where gay marriage is legal.

How sweet! Let me get in contact with Mary J Blige for my proposal! Hmmmph…
