Whilst I must 'try harder', here's my excuse. I have been slightly tied up since the dramatic arrival of baby James last October.
James arrived whilst on our way to the hospital in the back of the car. (I can thoroughly recommend the Ford S-max as being 'roomy enough to deliver a baby!')

Martyn (the father-in-law and my Friday receptionist) became assistant midwife until the paramedics arrived, and his coolness under pressure must be noted. This is probably a throw back to his days as a policeman.

Myself (reasonably cool under pressure too) made sure the cord wasn't around baby's neck as I guided baby out, then checked his airway....no teeth present! Fortunately all was well, and James was promptly wrapped up in a Crystal Palace towel for warmth (much to Martyn's delight).

James is now 8 months old and is just getting to grips with crawling, picking up and chewing on his sisters toys and concentrating hard on pushing his first tooth through. He also loves cars!

Please note that this is not a service we offer at the surgery...

Are you worried about taking your children to the dentist?

We rarely get anxious children patients, but we get a lot of anxious parents saying that there children are anxious! This anxiety is transfered purely through the way the parents behave towards their children prior to a dental appointment (Otherwise children children would have no idea about dentists beforehand). The parents probably learnt this behaviour from their parents! However this blog has not about condeming parents as I have children too and know all about it. What this blog is about is to tell you how to approach taking your child to the dentist, without transferring your fears. (We firmly believe in preventative dentistry, and catching children young gives us a massive head start when it comes to preventing tooth decay ,gum problems and avoiding the development of phobias)
If you are a parent, anxious of the dentist there is no reason your children should inherit your fear.
Treat coming to the dentist as nothing more than routine. Let the dentist deal with the situation and do not promise treats or offer bribes. This not only creates a 'rod for your back', it almost encourages the expectation that your child has to go through something bad to get something good. This actually makes the situation harder for the dentist to deal with, even if in the short term it helps the parent! Let your child make up their own minds, dentistry has changed!
Children pick up on your 'non-verbal' communication, you would be amazed what you give away especially if you are anxious about a situation, such as coming to the dentist.
We usually have a ball of a time when our younger patients come in, we encourage them to join in, even be a little cheeky, but what we are essentially doing is creating an environment that they feel safe in, learn a little bit about what we do, and should any treatment be required, they are not at all fussed about the idea. (It's the pre-concieved ideas about what 'may' happen that cause all the problems). If you want to know more, please give us a call on 01883 622222

‘I'm scared that the hygienist is going to break my veneers!’

This is a regular question I get asked by my patients that deserves a follow up.

Any restoration that has been 'added' or 'bonded' to your teeth needs special attention. Veneers, crowns and fillings ALL have 'seams' and no matter how smooth these seams are they will harbour the nasties that can cause decay or gum disease. Therefore you are more likely to have problems than someone with no restorations at all.

In short, the hygienist is the person to prevent decay or gum disease. They are specially trained to look after existing teeth and restorations and are great at finding problems. If your restorations have 'snags' on them THEY ARE NOT RIGHT!

A hygienist will help you maintain healthy teeth and help your restorations to last longer.

Save money at the dentist

Want to know how to save money at the dentist?
- See a hygienist!

It is as simple as that. Hygienists are super at detecting early dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. We know that tooth decay is preventable, so by showing you how to effectively clean your teeth and making sure you do not build up excessive amounts of calculus(tartar). You will minimise your chances of further more expensive treatment (not forgetting drilling and needles)!

95% adults suffer from gum disease (most don't even know!)

What to look out for

bleeding gums

swollen gums

food traps

bad breath

loose teeth

None of these are good signs. Gum disease and the even more serious periodontal disease requires very regular hygiene maintenance. One visit will not entirely solve these problems, but regular maintenance will minimise damage and possibly halt the progression of the disease.

If you regularly see a dentist but still require regular fillings then something is wrong! You may need to see a hygienist more frequently.

Is dentistry surgical or medical?

What if dentistry was like medicine?
Well we'd have 2 main disciplines, surgery and medicine. For the last 100 years, dentistry has been primarily 'Surgical', we have to cut or drill your teeth to prevent spread of the dental disease throughout your teeth.
This has meant the use of injections, drilling, fillings, occassional 'after pain', the associated fear of coming to the dentist! What if there was an alternative? maybe a medical approach.

If we had a medical problem, we may think of ways to reduce or prevent our risk of the problem. This maybe through the help of excercise, diet or medications. We can do exactly the same thing in dentistry. We know that we can prevent most dental problems from occuring in the first place. We have dental examinations on a regular cycle to detect early problems and send our patients to the hygienist who can give you the care and advice on how best to clean and maintain your teeth. They can show you where problems may occur, and they can recommend specific dental products (medicines if you like) that will significantly reduce your risk of decay or gum disease developing.

It is that simple.

Are you in a high risk group?
We know that certain groups of our patients present greater risk than others and also that risk changes throughout your life. The greater risk group looks like this:

Children, who are not the best at cleaning their teeth, and great for eating the wrong types of food.
The ‘stable group' (mid 20's to mid 65's), who have a lower risk of new decay developing.
65+, in some cases where they become increasingly medicated, possibly more frail and less able to clean their teeth effectively, problems begin.

We have a variety of dental products that together with regular hygiene care and maintenance can reduce the chance of tooth decay and gum problems. This is the preventative medical approach.

Now does that sound a little more appealing than surgical dentistry?

What will the result be in years to come if I don’t go to the dentist due to my fear?

Prevention is always better than the cure. It can take about 2 years before a problem in a tooth can show on an x-ray. Most tooth decay progresses with little or no symptoms till it’s too late. Treating as early as possible can keep treatment to a minimum. Anxiety can be reduced and potential toothache can be avoided.

We use a microscope and a ‘diagnodent’ Laser cavity detector to help us pick up dental problems early. If we could find a way to help you achieve this, how would you feel?
The dentist will be extremely aware of your nervousness and may look for the quickest or easiest way to complete treatment, so ultimately fear will get in the way of the best treatment options. Ask the receptionist if you can see the new dentist just to say hello, to see if they give you a good vibe or feeling. The dentist has very little time to convince a patient that they are nice and caring and competent and have your best interests at heart. This is even harder for us if you nervous. We are human first, dentist second, if you just do not like the dentist as a person, you maybe need to look around a bit and find someone you 'gel' with better. Remember the great feeling that memory gives you. Gives you a great lift doesn't it!
So when your next sitting in the dental chair don't think about the treatment, that's in-hand.The dentist can fix your problem. Think instead of that happy memory and the feeling that memory gives you, keep focussed on just that one thing. This may well give you the 'fly on the wall experience' where you feel 'distanced' from the proceedings, and much better able to cope with the experience.
For more information about dental sedation, click on the link above.

Minimally invasive dentistry?

What's that supposed to mean? Well in the olden days, we often needed to trim teeth down to almost nothing before we could effectively crown them. A crown needed to entirely encase the tooth to allow it to stay on. This is very destructive to the tooth.
Now however, given the right circumstances, we can remove the affected portion of the tooth and bond on a 'lid'. This is hard wearing, tooth coloured and we have been minimal on our invasion into the tooth. Here's my example of Mr T. who needs strong teeth as he regularly gets crazed squirrels throwing themselves at his window whilst he works! (but that's another story) .

Did you know that silver amalgam fillings contain at least 50% mercury?

It's so difficult to 'prove' the toxic effects of mercury that it seems to be enough justification for dentists to continue to place them in patients mouths.
I've found a good link to the wonderful wikipedia on the 'dental amalgam controversy'.
We have never placed amalgam fillings at Warlingham, and we have special filters to capture the amalgam and mercury residues to prevent them poisoning the water supply.
FInd out more about 'The Warlingham Green Bio Dentistry System'

It's so hot!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1ec40QMzU-kFg7hiklYqpb5ZZLg_stQE51PjSguVWeSzVMGBG2C8KPnZUd3J29moP8n3HZWj8zcGC38LB9P-CxGak6ef5DmmzmJEId95-9jEH_stDJ5EtNm2x2hdigSHUTfadOQ/s400/IMG_5763.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5353047277689111026" />
Well actually that is not true.
