One of they key things in social media marketing is having an audience follow what you’re saying as well as to interact with. If no one sees your tweet, it won’t make a difference that you tweeted. The same goes for on other sites.

Now where are those fans and followers?

How you find them will depend on the site you’re marketing on. Some people treat Facebook as a more personal site for example, and so they may be reluctant to add someone whose connection to them is more about business.

Start with People You Already Know Online

The easiest people to get to follow you may be those you already know online, especially if they are interested in your niche. Request to follow them and many will return the favor.

On some sites, going through the people they follow and seeing who you might like to follow as well can be a good choice. As I said above, Facebook isn’t always the right choice for that, but use your best judgment. The nice part about sites such as Facebook and Twitter is that if someone doesn’t want to read what you’re posting, they have only to not follow you in return.

That said, don’t go overboard in your early efforts. Add too many people too quickly and you’re likely to be labeled as a spammer and banned. There’s no point in wasting your efforts.

Find People Interested in Your Niche

There are a number of ways to find people interested in a particular niche. There are Twitter directories. Facebook groups. You can see who liked particular links on StumbleUpon.

Look around and figure out how to meet other users on the social sites you’re using. Find the people who might be interested in what you have to say.

Retweets on Twitter can also be useful. People retweet things they find interesting. If they like the kinds of things you’ll be posting, give following them a try.

What If They Don’t Follow Back?

Many people stress about who follows them back, especially on Twitter where there are rules about how many people you are following versus being followed by. They don’t want to use up all their following ability on people who aren’t interested in them.

You’ll have to give some thought to this one. Are you following to get followers or are you following people you think might be interesting? How much time and effort do you want to put into interacting with people and reading what they’ve posted?

The more people you follow on any given site, the harder it’s going to be to keep up. It’s not like you can interact online with people all day and get other things done too. You’re going to have to find the right balance for you.

I personally don’t worry about who follows me back. They do or do not. But then I also only follow back people who interest me when I check their link when they follow me.

Let’s face it. Not everyone is going to be saying interesting things to you.

Some people you’ll want to follow because they’re your target market and keeping in contact with that is always good. Others because they’re in your niche or something closely enough related to it that you want to keep up with them. Still others because, frankly, they post neat stuff.

What About Follower Adders?

Some people like to use software to automate the process of adding followers. This isn’t something I would consider a good idea.

Use it too fast and get banned. That’s the first problem.

But even if you use it slowly enough that you don’t get banned, is it getting you the kinds of followers you need or is it just adding clutter?

Numbers don’t do you any good in most ways. It’s the same as with page views on a website. Who cares about getting a million visitors if not one of them buys from you, signs up for your list or does whatever your goal for them was?

Your beautiful WordPress blog is ready to welcome the world, but readers are not arriving. Want to discover four simple secrets to catch the notice of Googlebot? No matter how brilliant your content is, unless Google “sees” it, it will languish. Your blog has to be set up to get Google to it.

The Googlebot crawls the net frequently to detect new content.. To attract Google’s attention, you must do something. The first 3 of our 4 tricks are to set up specific plugins into your blog which mechanically attract Google’s attention. Note: Plugins are not accessible for WordPress.com blogs.

Three Powerful Plugins for WordPress

Install and Activate Log in to your WordPress dashboard and click on Plugins on the left side menu. On your Plugins page, click on Manage Plugins, then Add New. This takes you to your Search Plugins page. Inside the Search Plugins bar, put in the following plugin names you plan to install.

1) Google XML Sitemaps

From the FAQ, They state that a Google site map is a file for Google to read so that it can put your content in their index.

Write Google XML Sitemaps into the search window. Select it from the list of selections that results. Install and activate it. Settings – Go back to your blog’s plugin page. Find your new plugin and click on Settings under the description. This lands you on the settings page and, the default settings are okay. Select Update Options. You won’t see this plugin as it works silently.

2) OnlyWire

Their FAQ states, “Auto-Syndicate your content to millions of readers with One Button.” No cost for Onlywire if you install the OnlyWire plugin in a blog. You could also be asked to install the “Submitter” into your browser. They give instructions.

Sign up for an account at onlywire.com. Log in and click on My Services. (Find it by clicking on your name after you log in). At this time they offer 39 services; sign up for each by clicking on its icon and going to the site. Put in your log in information for each site. This is a bit time consuming.

When you are finished, scroll down this page to save your info. Return to your dashboard plugins page. Type Onlywire for WordPress in your search plugins bar. Select it from the resultant list install and activate it.

Back on your plugins page; click on Settings under the plugin’s name; enter in your Onlywire username and password, check “Autopost All Articles,” uncheck “Autopost All Article Revisions.” Choose the sites where you got accounts and save changes. Each time you write a new post, be sure that the “Post this to Onlywire” box underneath the text box is checked. It is not a good idea you post revisions by Onlywire. Now when you click on Publish, Onlywire automatically posts to all the services you chose on their website.

3) Tweetmeme

This nifty little plugin installs a “Tweet” button in the top right corner of every post on your blog, so that you and your visitors can Tweet and retweet to Twitter. Type Tweetmeme Retweet Button in your Search Plugins bar. Install the plugin and activate it. You will be asked for your Twitter username and password. Hooray! You can now Tweet!

Secret 4

Post frequently! Google sends its Googlebot out looking for new content. Updating regularly trains the Googlebot to start coming back to look for new content. Your new content doesn’t always have to be epic…more brief postings like a journal entry are worthwhile for when you aren’t able to add major additions.

You also get “backlinks” using Onlywire and Tweetmeme – links elsewhere referring back to your original content. Google LOVES this! Using these four secrets will support you in time in getting your blog content higher ranking on Google.

The number of ways of making more money with your blog is astounding. Creating income from your blog depends on the amount of traffic your blog gets. If you have an extremely popular blog then your blog is ideal for affiliate marketing. Traffic for the affiliate is directed to their site using a link of some sort from your website.

An affiliate link from your website may be as simple as a text block or may be a significant block or area set aside for the advertising before the fold. In advertising before the fold is the area at the top of the page or mailer. Visualize a piece of paper folded in a tri-fold fashion whereas the way it is folded you have the top (above the fold), the middle (between the folds) and the bottom (below the folds).

Moving forward, with affiliate marketing almost anyone can promote an affiliates product no matter how popular the website doing the promoting is. The affiliate product owners thought is the more websites the merrier in getting their product promoted. Making money and the success of your promoting an affiliate product does depend on the popularity of your website or blog if that is where you are promoting the product.

The big question lurking in the back of your mind is how do you make money? That answer is, you need to enter into an affiliate contract with the product owner agreeing to their terms of selling and what the compensation is for doing so. I know for a fact that it is possible to get 80 percent or better commissions on products being possible by the popularity of your website, blog or whatever the web medium you are promoting from.

When you are first beginning out in the affiliate marketing world it requires a lot of work in establishing your web presence. I would recommend that you seriously concentrate on promoting your own blog and building your presence by developing your page ranking and how your website shows from search engine results such as Google, Yahoo, Bing and the other popular search sites.

One resource in learning how to do this is the free eBook available from Google titled “Google SEO.” Once you have studied this eBook and implemented what you have learned you will also become familiar with many of the other methods to promote your website or blog.

How do you go about select or find the opportunity for promoting an affiliate product? By far, one of the most popular sites amongst the internet marketing world is ClickBank. It is easy to join and setting up your affiliate account. There are 100′s of thousands of affiliate marketers who use ClickBank and its facilities for promoting their product and this is how you will be paid your commission and enter into your affiliate contract. Another site that comes to mind and is very similar to ClickBank is Commission Junction. These two sites are by no means the only sites which do affiliate marketing. A search with Google will reveal many more Affiliate resources and leads with each and everyone being a great money making opportunity.

The book also covers Search Engine Optimisation and Pay Per Click advertising (although very briefly and from a high level).

The book does give you a framework to build your own plan around for social media usage but due to the range of different platforms and the different business objectives it can only really show the path rather than give you a dummies guide to Social Media Success.

Summary

If you are not yet using social media in your business then both books will open your eyes to social media and how it can help you better communicate and stay in touch with you clients whilst also enabling you to keep in touch and promote products and services.

If you are involved in the marketing or customer support aspects of a large businesses, I would suggest you order both books and read Socialonomics first, be terrified and then establish a social media policy. If you are a smaller business wondering just what the fuss is about, pick up This is Social Media for a general overview and start dipping your toe in.
