The location couldn’t be any better: Anker köz is sealed off from traffic, just off Deák tér. Anker defines itself as a 21st century cultural and community space and has become a cult spot in no time. Take a closer look at this restaurant/bar/ club/community space.

And what a space! Apart from the columns that hold the mass of the building, there is nothing to divide the seating area of the restaurant. The vast central space is furnished with easy-to-move tables and chairs—since Anker is a club at night, compromises had to be made. The décor is trendy-industrial, a bit worn around the edges, but somehow still welcoming. When we were there, no kids were around the place, but the staff will set for the little ones at a moment’s notice.

A Kert (The Garden) is a new bar/café/social space in the making. In the next couple of weeks, you’ll witness how something new, something special is being created in central Buda. Spring is the season of rebirth and creation – take part in it! Do you know the green building on the corner of Krisztina körút and Alagút utca by the statue of Déryné? It’s been abandoned for years, but now it’s home to Budapest’s new cultural and social space, A Kert. The small park (that is Horváth Garden) was home to fragrant lemon and orange trees in the 18th century, nurtured by a tiny stream called Ördögárok (Devil’s Ditch) trickling into, now underneath, the park. Up until its demolition in 1937, the Buda Theater was also located at this very spot. It’s safe to say that this place was the centre of social gatherings for centuries. And now it’s back with a similarly social yet far more versatile role.

At first sight, you could think A Kert is a stylish, quiet café, with lovely and reasonably priced cakes and pastries (you might remember them from the selection of Angelo) and a great breakfast offer. As it opens at 7:30, you’ll have time to have your coffee and croissants or eggs (or, for a lavish kick-off to your day, go for French toast), and read the paper under the artistic chandelier.

But as soon as the weather turns friendlier, A Kert will treat you to lovely surprises. March 24 will see the first bio and farmers’ market in Horváth Garden, with a friendly gang providing you with your five-a-day. If healthy fruit and veg don’t satisfy your appetite, you should join the queues forming under A Kert’s pergola. Yep, barbecue season is coming, and you no longer have to wait for garden party invitations to enjoy ribs and grilled vegetables.

A Kert is not only about stuffing your face though. Every month comes with a different theme, with specials days dedicated to a wide range of topics, such as girls’ day out day, walking in the parkday, strawberry day, or hug a mailman day. Your calendar will be filled with things to see and do atA Kert.

And when it comes to evening entertainment, A Kert invites you to intimate parties and silent film nights (not the old-school, b&w variety, but the headphone-wearing cinematic experience) under the stars. Come by bike, with your dog, with your friends or your whole family, and witness how A Kertis becoming a true garden of earthly delights.

Roberto Fonseca (piano, vocal) is one of the most charismatic Cuban jazz musicians of his generation whose live shows have been capturing audiences worldwide for more than a decade. The Buena Vista Social Club prodigy and Havana Cultura star has grabbed Cuban music by the horns and continued this party into the 21st century.

His new album ‘YO’, which means I or me in Spanish, is his most daring one to date. Fonseca explores new sounds and dimensions blending traditional acoustic instruments with elements of electronica and pays homage to Cuba’s African roots whilst while striking forwards with red-hot grooves and electronic beats that effortlessly updates Cuba’s musical lineage.

In place of his usual jazz quintet, on YO he develops a concept of a union between electro, analogue and African, Hammond organs, n’goni, congas, kora and the talking drum, combined together in a synthesis of Afro Cuban groove and Griot tradition.

When Roberto Fonseca plays, the music seeps from every pore in his body, at times on stage he stands and hammers the piano as if it were a percussion instrument or he grabs a drum and transforms his group into a comparsa – the Cuban carnival groups that parade the streets once a year – and gets the audiences dancing euphorically…..

To those people who are still wondering who is Roberto Fonseca and to all those who thought they knew him, the Cuban musician replies: YO. An epic at the crossroads of jazz, traditional music and soul; a crossing of both sides of the shores of the Atlantic; an album which presents a new artist, not because he has changed but because his art still contains many surprises.

Featuring: Roberto Fonseca – piano, vocals, Joel Hierrezuelo – Cuban percussion instruments, vocals, Jorge Chicoy – electric guitar, Ramsés Rodríguez – drums, Yandi Martínez – double bass, bass guitar, Cherif Soumano – kora, tama.
