Bristol City Centre is to welcome a 60-metre observation wheel in time for Valentine’s Day, offering spectacular panoramic views of the city and an unforgettable trip above the skyline.

Standing taller than Nelson’s Column (51 metres) and almost twice as high as Cabot Tower (31 metres), ‘The Bristol Wheel’ is the largest observation wheel to visit the South West and will feature 40 pods including one special VIP capsule, offering higher seats and tinted glass.

A ride on the Bristol Wheel will last 15 minutes and offers visitors a memorable experience along with a unique birds-eye view of the city centre and beyond. Each pod seats up to six people and is fully enclosed to offer a comfortable journey into the sky, whatever the weather.

Work has already started on building the giant wheel, which will be situated at the Podium in Broadmead. It is estimated that construction will take around two weeks and The Bristol Wheel is set to begin turning in time for Valentine’s Day and half term.

Cabot Circus Centre Director Kevin Duffy commented: “We are delighted to bring the South West’s biggest observation wheel to the heart of Bristol which will provide a fantastic attraction for local people and visitors alike. It will offer unparalleled 360° views and will be visible from across the city when illuminated at night.”

John Hallett, Managing Director at Destination Bristol, added: “The Bristol Wheel will make a great addition to the city’s excellent range of visitor attractions.

“There will be much to see of Bristol from 60m high, with stunning views of the historic Harbourside and the city’s surrounding countryside.  Iconic buildings are likely to be seen from the wheel, including the majestic St Mary Redcliffe Church, Bristol Cathedral, the Wills Memorial Building and Cabot Tower. With February half term and Valentine’s Day round the corner and Easter on the horizon, we’re expecting the Bristol Wheel to attract an increase in visitor numbers to Bristol city centre.”

Family firm Mellors is the company behind the observation wheel, and has undertaken similar projects in Hyde Park, Liverpool and Nottingham.

The Met Office issued the following Amber warning for parts of the South West

A band of wet weather over Northern Ireland and western Scotland early Saturday
will move slowly east and southeastwardsacross the United Kingdom during the day.

As it does so it will readily turn to sleet and snow away from western and
southwestern coastal areas giving accumulations of 2-5cm in places and
5-10cm widely in the amber warning area. 

The snow is expected to turn to rain over some northwestern areas later. As skies
 then clear in this area after dark, icy patches will develop. The public are
advised that this is likely to lead to some travel disruption, and it is recommended
to keep up to date with forecasts as the event approaches.

February is traditionally the coldest month with a daytime average of 6.3c  and night-time low of 0.6c, but temperatures are expected to stay well below average throughout the weekend.

Retailers have reported that shoppers have been stocking up on salt, grit and warm clothing for the first time after a period of relatively mild weather.

The Highways Agency told drivers to take care on all motorways and A-roads. Its 500-strong gritting fleet is gearing up for its busiest week of the winter and it has already spread 60,000 tons of salt.

As a Mum of two beautiful children and never quite being able to afford the clothes I wanted – I decided to search out the bargains for me (and my friends) and found I was quite good at it. I even started to make a few pennies.

The Baby Angel was actually inspired by two ideas. Having had two c-sections and suffered badly with post-natal depression I wanted my very own Angel to bring some gorgeous clothes for my newborn. Attempts to visit the Virgin Broadband Status page are greeted with the following maintenance message.

The internet service provider has since acknowledged that there is a “nationwide fault” with its broadband (ADSL) service, assuring users that its engineers are working on a solution.

“If you’re calling having lost your internet connection since 5pm, we are currently experiencing a nationwide fault resulting in loss or intermittent loss of connection,” read a statement on the Virgin Media website.

“Please do not change any of the settings on your router. You may need to power down your router for five minutes and then turn back on, one or more times to re-establish your connection.

“Our engineers are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible. Virgin Media apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Hang tight folks, fingers crossed normal service will be restored soon.

It turns out that the RAF C17 Globemaster was on a routine training excercise, doing several circuits of Bristol Airport. ZZ171 is operated by 99 Squadron who are based at RAF Brize Norton.

The Ministry of Defence announced during May 2000 that the RAF would lease four C-17s from Boeing for an initial seven year period with an optional two year extension. At this point the RAF had the option to purchase these aircraft.

The first C-17 was flown to RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on 17th May, 2001. The flight crew were drawn from 99 Squadron, its new RAF operator. The RAFs fourth C-17 was flown into RAF Brize Norton on 24th August, 2001 and the four aircraft wore the serial numbers ZZ171 to ZZ174.

The aircraft has proven  so valuable that the MOD decided  in July 2004 to purchase the four aircraft, even though the Airbus A400M had been ordered as a strategic transport aircraft.

The A400M has local connections with a Filton-based Airbus team designing and making the mostly lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic wings. The team at Filton also work on the A400M’s air-to-air refuelling system.

Airbus has 10,000 employees in the UK at its facilities in Filton and Broughton in North Wales.

You may also do voluntary work, allowing you to meet people who have come together for a common purpose.

3. Meet people for sport

Playing sports are a great way to meet people. That is especially true if you are playing a team sport where you get a chance to develop camaraderie. Socializing after games will also probably be a natural part of being in the club. Bristol has many sports clubs and teams that you could join. They also need not be expensive and many clubs will welcome beginners.

4. Meet people for a hobby or interest

If sport isn’t your thing, perhaps politics or some other cause is. Bristol has numerous clubs dedicated to political parties, social causes or other socializing opportunities and hobbies. Join some clubs that interest you and you will have lots of opportunities to meet people who like the same things that you do. You may also take classes in something that interests you and that will live you lots to talk about when you meet people. Bristol offers lots of opportunities to go to evening or weekend classes.

These are just five simple ways to meet people in Bristol but they may kick start friendships that will last a lifetime because they focus on your common interests and bonds.

Unions anticipate that approximately two million public sector workers across the UK walked out over the proposed changes. The Government have however indicated they believe the number to be closer to 1.3 million.

The march, which left College Green in the city centre at 11:30 and ended with a rally at Castle Park at 12:30 where representatives from many public service unions addressed the crowd.

140 schools in Bristol were either closed or impacted by the walkout. NUT spokeswoman Nina Franklin told the crowd the unions had entered into negotiations in good faith but that the government had not.

“There’s a huge injustice to public service workers and we should all call on the TUC to call the next day of action until we get fair pensions for all.

“The government should be taking notice,” Ms Franklin added.

Some social workers, residential care staff, home care workers, crematorium staff, highways management and homelessness officers continued to work.

The M Shed museum and Bristol Museum and Art Gallery were closed, along with the recycling centre at Avonmouth, the spokesman said.

The Millennium Stadium and Bristol’s Memorial Stadium are thought to be among the chosen venues, which will be announced by the Rugby Football League at Salford’s MediaCityUK on Monday morning.

It will be the first international rugby league game to be played in Bristol for more than 100 years, while Filton College is set to provide a base for one of the competing teams. Bristol City’s Ashton Gate hosted a fixture between Australia and a West and Wales team, which the tourists won 23-3, in December 1911.

The latest initiative came from the South West Rugby League community, spearheaded by the ambitious Bristol Sonics club, with both professional football clubs joining a consortium along with Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council.

The Sonics were formed nine years ago and run two open-age teams in the Rugby League Conference, as well as six junior clubs.

Nearby Gloucester was a host for the last World Cup to be held in the United Kingdom in 2000, along with other non-traditional venues like Reading and Belfast, but the RFL are thought to have opted to concentrate the competition largely in the game’s heartlands after incurring heavy losses 11 years ago.

A total of 34 bids, comprising 30 stadia, 47 team training sites and 87 team base camps, were submitted to the RFL by the July deadline, with each undergoing a detailed inspection from the 2013 team.

Nigel Wood, 2013 Rugby League World Cup tournament director, will announce the venues for group games and quarter-finals along with the names of the towns that are hosting team base camps and training sites.

He said: “It has been a fantastic and inspiring bidding process and we have been extremely impressed with the quality, detail and diverse nature of the host bids received.”

The final will be held on November 30, 2013, with Old Trafford tipped as the likely venue.

The bank has confirmed 330 jobs are to go. Earlier Unite union said the figure was closer to 440.

Unite urged the RBS to reconsider the closure, warning that it would “devastate” the local area.

David Fleming, from the union, said: “Unite has expressed to the Royal Bank of Scotland its frustration about the bank’s decision to close its site in Bristol and also make another 440 staff cuts from its customer support operations.

“The Aztec West site is the second site closure announced by RBS in the South West, as the Plymouth site is also closing.”

A spokesman for RBS, which is is more than 80% owned by the taxpayer, said: “We identified the sites that would close over the next two years and committed to giving our employees 12 months’ notice of the closures.

“We will do all we can to support our employees, offer redeployment opportunities wherever possible and to keep compulsory redundancies to an absolute minimum.

“Having to cut jobs is the most difficult part of our work to rebuild RBS.”

The job losses were announced just hours before Chancellor George Osborne presented the Government’s Autumn Statement to Parliament.

Members of staff were advised that the site closure would take place by the end of December 2012.

After some thinking of what I could do this winter to “Give something back” I decided that the simple ideas are often the best.

So on the 24^th December 2011 we plan to converge upon the Bear Pit
in central Bristol at 10am with clothing donated by the good people of Bristol and give it away completely free, also featuring the “Positivity Bristol” wall and hopefully many other things. J

I am sure that we all have that coat that we no longer wear, a pair of gloves that have been replaced by a better pair for the winter, usually we would throw them away or quite often they just get chucked to the back of a wardrobe and never thought about again.

If you do, now is the perfect chance to get rid of said items and at the same time hand them on to someone else that can use them and enjoy them.

All items of clothing are welcome, condition is not to much of a problem (Of course not full of holes!) And beyond the standard t-shirts, trousers stuff like Hats, Gloves and Scarves would be very welcome as well because we have a long winter ahead of us. Some special items such as Sleeping bags etc will be held back from the main drop off and given directly too people that need them, hopefully we can do this through the “Caring at Christmas” project but I am yet to confirm this.

A Red Arrows pilot has become the second team member to die in a matter of weeks after he was ejected from his aircraft while it was on the ground.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said an investigation was under way and confirmed the jet was not airborne when the tragedy happened. The pilot’s family have been informed.

“We can confirm that there has been an incident involving a Red Arrows Hawk at Scampton,” a MoD spokesman said, referring to the Lincolnshire RAF base in eastern England which is home to the squadron.

He gave no further details about what had happened, or if there were any casualties.

Lincolnshire police said they had been alerted at 11.18 a.m. and an air ambulance had attended the scene. The incident was ongoing, a spokesman said.

In August, Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging, 33, crashed after performing at the Bournemouth Air Festival on the southern coast of England.

The display team was formed in 1965 and has performed more than 4,000 displays in 52 countries.

The city centre shopping area will also welcome two Christmas markets that combine a traditional German theme with a locally inspired Christmas market. The quaint wooden chalet style stalls will offer visitors unique gift ideas, original handmade crafts, festive German food and drink, decorative items and a yuletide atmosphere. They will be located throughout Broadmead and will feature a spectacular Christmas pyramid, bar, cafe with seating area, 30 German traditional wooden chalets, decorations, lights and a nativity scene. The German market will run from 10 November until 22 December.

The ‘12 days of Christmas’ market will offer a selection of locally sourced produce and will be located next to the German Christmas Market from 9 until 20 December.

Inside The Galleries, the Peter Pan-themed Santa’s Grotto will complement the Hippodrome Pantomime this Christmas. Santa’s Grotto will open on 12 November until 24 December.

Bristol Fireworks Fiesta and Display Canford Park, Westbury on Trym – 5th November

“Members of Round Table (and lately Clifton Rotary Club) had organised a large display in Bristol for over 40 years, and when it moved to the Downs in the early 1980s, it had become one of the biggest in the South-West. Sadly, after raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity, it was forced to end due to a combination of bad weather, rising costs and increasing numbers of people standing outside and watching for free. However, after a brief lull, the members of Bristol Round Table and clifton Rotary Club decided that it was too big an event (and too big a fund raiser) to let go, and plans were made to resurrect the event in Canford Park. An enormous amount of planning and preparation has been undertaken over the last year in order to put on this display, which will rival the old Downs display in its size and power. Again, money raised will go to local good causes – we have already agreed to support St Peter’s hospice through ticket sales, and local school PTAs, and a proportion of the proceeds will go to the Lord Mayor’s Children’s Appeal.

We will not be having any fairground rides, and we also won’t be building our usual huge bonfire as the grass at Canford Park is more scarce (and more luscious) than the Downs, and it would be a shame to spoil it. However, there will be hot and cold food stalls and we will
have Bristol’s famous ambling Band helping to keep the crowds entertained before our specialist pyrotechnic company, Skyburst fireworks, ‘light the blue touch paper’ at 7pm.

We chose Canford as a replacement site as it has plenty of natural screening, a huge fallout area next door, and nowhere for crowds to stand and watch for free. More importantly, it has great pedestrian links to the surrounding communities and we are encouraging families to walk to the event as no parking is provided.”

The County Ground Cricket Fiesta – Sunday 6th November

The sky above the County Ground is set to light up on Sunday the 6^th of November with a spectacular fireworks display.

The hugely popular event is run by Gloucestershire County Cricket Club’s Bristol region in aid of Club funds. It drew a great crowd last year and this year it promises to be bigger and better.

The evening will include two fireworks displays, one especially for children at 6.45pm, and the second at 7.15pm, with gates opening at 5pm. There will also be fairground rides, sideshows, bar and food outlets.

Tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for children. They can be purchased from the County Ground reception during office hours or from 10am on the day. Free parking is available at the ground via the Ashley Down road entrance.

Ground manager, Peter Hall said; “Our firework display has always been a great success, every year the fireworks are just spectacular. I’m sure that this year will be no different so arrive early to get the best spot.”

Cadbury House Fireworks Display – 5th November · 4:30pm – 7:30pm

The fourth annual night of spectacular fireworks and family fun is being planned by theclub at DoubleTree by Hilton, Cadbury House in Congresbury, North Somerset.

Saturday November 5 will see the grounds around the luxury health club and hotel transformed, complete with fairground rides and stalls to celebrate Firework night in style.

The celebrations will begin at 4.30pm and carry on throughout the night with a children’s entertainment show at 5pm.

The firework display will end the evening with a bang at 6.30pm and is shaping up to be the best yet. Also entertaining guests on the night will be face painting, a children’s entertainer, a pets corner, popcorn, candyfloss a BBQ and a drinks tent.

Tickets for the event cost £5 for members and £7.50 for non-members. Kids tickets cost £3 for members and £4 for non-members with children under three going free. With only limited numbers available we are advising anyone who wants to come along to get in touch soon.

Canford Park Fireworks Display – 5th November 2011

Tickets are available from local schools or Hospice shops. Tickets bought in advance are £3 for all and £5 on the night (£3 for under 12’s, children 2 and under free). Tickets bought through a school will benefit them as 50 pence on each ticket will be returned as a commission.

Entrance to the venue is on Canford Lane with admission from 18.15 and the display starting at 19.00. Food stalls will provide snacks, hot and cold drinks. There is no expensive fun fair or scary bonfire as this will be a community event with just a spectacular firework display. Also there is no car park as most people will probably walk to the event or come by local transport. The organisers emphasise that this will be a straightforward firework display in an atmospheric setting.

Public firework displays, such as this one at Canford Park, are an inexpensive and safe way of enjoying our traditional celebration of Guy Fawkes Night. Buy your tickets as soon as possible from schools or St Peter’s Hospice shop, but if that is not convenient, come along on Saturday 5th November.

Winterbourne Fireworks Display & Bonfoire Night - 5th November

The 1st Winterbourne Scout group are holding their fantastic fireworks display at Sunnyacres Farm in Winterbourne.
Entry is via the North Road end of Cloisters Road.
Gates Open at 5:30pm.
Bonfire will be lit at 6pm.
Firework Display starts at 7pm.
Barbecue, hot and cold refreshments are available. Vegetarians catered for!

Clevedon Round Table Fireworks Display – 5th November 2011

Once again fireworks and lights will bring the skies above Clevedon to life as another spectacular show in front of more than 15,000 people is put on to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night on Saturday, 5th November at the home of Clevedon Cricket Club.

The event has become one of the most popular in North Somerset and you can see for yourself photos of last year’s Round Table Fireworks Spectacular in Clevedon.

Gates open 6:00pm at for children’s funfair rides, the huge bonfire will be lit at 6:45pm and the fireworks display will start at 7:30pm

Downend Fireworks Display – 4 November 2011

This year see’s BIG changes as we reach our forty year anniversary of this event! They have spent more money on fireworks!  In forty years they have raised over half a million pounds of charity money to hand to local worthy causes in the Bristol area.

The biggest charity display in Bristol, put on by the Great Western Round table group.

Firework safety checklist

Figures have shown that more children than adults get hurt by fireworks. If you are thinking of using fireworks as part of your celebrations, you should follow the steps listed below.

Before your firework display

Preparation is key to enjoying fireworks safely, so:

• don’t buy fireworks from anywhere you’re not sure about, like a van or a temporary, unlicensed market stall
• only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 or with a CE mark – this shows that the firework meets British or European safety standards (a reputable shop will know this)
• follow the instructions on each firework – read them in daylight or by torchlight, never by a naked flame
• make suitable supports and launchers if you’re setting off Catherine wheels or rockets

Things you will need on the night

It’s easy to get a few household things together, these are:

• a closed metal box to store the fireworks – take them out one at a time
• a bucket of water – to cool sparklers and put out any small fires
• eye protection and gloves
• a bucket of earth to stick fireworks in

Lighting fireworks

Follow these simple guidelines to stay safe:

• only one person should be responsible for letting off fireworks
• don’t drink alcohol if you are setting off fireworks
• light fireworks at arm’s length, using a taper
• make sure everyone stands well back
• never go back to a firework that has been lit – even if it hasn’t gone off it could still explode

Sparklers

Sparklers are fun, but always:

• supervise children with sparklers and never give them to a child under five
• light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves
• put used sparklers hot end down into a bucket of sand or water

Other tips on the night

Finally, follow these other rules for a safe night:

• keep pets indoors – most animals get very scared by the lights and noise from fireworks
• never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them
• never throw spent fireworks on a bonfire
• take care around bonfires – all clothes, even those labelled ‘low flammability’ – can catch fire

The South West’s Largest Outdoor Ice Rink

Wrap up warm for a skating experience with a difference as the South West’s largest outdoor ice rink returns to The Mall. The vast expanse of real ice (over 1000 sq meters) offers a unique experience to skaters. With ‘seal’ skating aids to help the youngsters it’s a fun activity for the whole family.  *

The Mall will be celebrating the opening of the South West’s largest ice-rink with a buy one get one free offer on all skating tickets purchased from The Winter Wonderland Ticket Office on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th November. *

Skate and Donate week is back for its third year. This Christmas, The Mall will be donating ice skating sessions to its two chosen charities; ‘Have a Heart’ and BBC Children in Need during Monday 14th to Friday 18th November. Santa’s Magical Castle

Children are invited to bring their Christmas lists and pay a special visit to Santa’s Magical Castle, which is open every day up until Christmas Eve, when Santa has to leave to deliver his presents to children all around the world. The elves will also be on hand to take a photograph of each child as they visit Santa to keep as a souvenir of their special day.*

Tickets to see Santa cost £4 and include an age appropriate gift. Tickets can be pre-booked online at www.mallcribbs.com   or purchased on the day from the Winter Wonderland Ticket Office.

Santa’s reindeer will be flying in for a special visit to The Mall’s Winter Wonderland on Sunday 13th November. From 10am until 2pm, children will be able to take a closer look at the reindeer in their petting area, next to the ice rink.
