Bristol City FC have today released news on their new away kit for the 2012/13 npower Championship season alongside a new partnership with Blackthorn.

Blackthorn have agreed to a deal which will see them become Bristol City’s first principal sponsor. After years of their logo appearing on the back of Bristol City kits, the logo will now be on the front of the Away kit for the first time since the 1994/5 season. However their logo will not appear on the replica junior shirts.

Guy Price (Bristol City CEO) had this to say:

“I am delighted that Blackthorn will be Bristol City’s new Principal Partners for the 2012/13 season. This is a major new sponsorship deal that means a lot to the club and its supporters. Cider is a big part of life here in the West and we’re delighted that our long-standing partnership with Blackthorn is set to continue in this way.

“Both Bristol City and Blackthorn have incredibly strong roots within our region and are among two of the biggest names in the West. This partnership brings two great West country traditions together. We have got exciting plans for this new season, so I fully except this partnership to flourish and grow”.

Dave Evans has been called a ‘Hero’ by local residents after rescuing 3 children from a flat fire that broke out in Weston-Super-Mare.

The flat located on Ashcombe Road in Weston had caught fire due to what the Fire Service say was caused by the bottom floor flat moving a gas cylinder around.

Dave Evans was said to help lead the 3 children from the burning flat to safety onto a joining roof. Mr Evans later claimed he wasn’t a ‘Hero’, just doing what was needed to protect the children.

The Mother is fine as she was not at the property at the time and there have been no other reported injuries.

Quakers Friars is set to become a foodie paradise next month as the UK’s biggest street food festival comes to the historic piazza at Cabot Circus for the first time.

Taking place over three days from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th May, the free festival will feature some of the UK’s finest ‘food trucks’ offering a variety of delicious street cuisine – a new concept that has gained popularity over recent months in London’s Southbank.

Colston Hall will also host a live stage throughout the event which will showcase some of Bristol’s best new musical talent. Featuring a range of local bands playing folk, acoustic and world music, performances will take place every lunchtime, afternoon and evening during the three-day event.

The street food festival will see Quakers Friars brought to life with festival-inspired food stalls and retailers and will offer the perfect opportunity for the whole family to come and enjoy tasty food, drink and free entertainment and music. Some of the vendors appearing include:

· The Swallow Bakery: boutique bakery offering speciality cupcakes and dessert pies

· The Hungry Gecko: A Masterchef finalist specialising in vegetarian Asian street food

· What the Dickens: iconic British dishes and revived vintage recipes

· Café Mor: seafood specialists from Pembrokeshire and winner of the British Street Food Award 2011

· Big Apple Hot Dogs: inspired by New York, made using only natural and free-range ingredients

· Byron Burgers: proper burgers and the ultimate in comfort food

· Churros Bros: chocolaty warm churros

Kevin Duffy, Cabot Circus Centre Director, commented: “The image of street food has been transformed over the past few years and there are now a new generation of entrepreneurs offer exciting new concepts and delicious cuisine. Inspired by food-loving cities like San Francisco, the ‘food truck’ movement is fast-gaining momentum in the UK and is already hugely popular in London, as well as at festivals like Glastonbury. We’re delighted to bring a street food event to Bristol, which will offer music and entertainment for the whole family.”

“Street Food is the most important UK food trend in years” says Richard Johnson, the author of Street Food Revolution and the founder of the British Street Food Awards. “That’s why Heston is singing the praises of the street food revolution in the next issue of GQ. And Jamie has gone and got his own ice cream truck. Served out of the coolest vans, trucks and trailers, street food offers up an exciting way to eat that doesn’t break the bank. It’s throwing up a new generation of food heroes, and has given us the two most important new restaurant openings in living memory – Pitt Cue and Co and Meat Liquor. They both started out trading on the streets. The Cabot Circus event will be packed with new talent, and showcase some sure-fire contenders for the British Street Food Awards 2012 in September.”

The free event will take place from 11am to 8pm from Friday 18th until and Sunday 20th May, with the first bands playing at 12:00pm each day.

Cabot Circus features a mix of fine dining, family restaurants and cafés which are clustered around two main areas – Quakers Friars and a restaurant terrace overlooking Cabot Circus. They include Brassiere Blanc, Harvey Nichols Restaurant Bar, Italian operators Carluccio’s and Piccolino and a wide range of national names such as Zizzi, Café Rouge, La Tasca, Giraffe, Tampopo and Yo Sushi!

For more information on the free street food festival visit www.cabotcircus.com or find us on Facebook or twitter. Shops throughout Cabot Circus and Quakers Friars are open from 10am to 8pm, with restaurants open until late.

Bristol City have been linked with a summer move for Dundee United’s Left sided full back Paul Dixon.

Bristol City’s Manager Derek McInnes is said to be keen on landing the 25 year old on a free transfer after his contract expires this summer. Dixon has stated his ambitions of a new challenge based in England after spending 4 years with Dundee United making 120 appearances in the process.

“I’d like to go to England, but obviously that depends on having offers. I just concentrate on playing my game – not paying attention to who might be watching and, hopefully, my agent is doing his job.”

Dixon has made 2 under 21 appearances for Scotland and been included in the Senior Squad on 1 occasion. Dixon has also attracted the attention of several league clubs including Millwall and Derby and Scottish champions Celtic.

Alan Smith and Lee Probert have completed a successful first season in charge at Wrington Redhill by clinching promotion and being crowned champions of the Somerset County 2 West League.

The management duo picked up a team which had found themselves in the bottom 3 of the table for the last 3 years running and the club in general decline. They took charge only 4 weeks before the first game of the season with a limited number of players.

Wrington found it tough going from the start, looing their opening two games, but Smith and Probert were still building the squad after a very short pre-season. By Christmas Wrington found themselves in the top 4 with a strong side, 5 of which were players from the previous season.

Wrington carried on their good run of form and found themselves leading the chase to promotion closely followed by Banwell, Coombe St Nicholas and Wells City Reserves.

It was on the final day of the season when Wrington were crowned champions with out even kicking a ball as a strong Portishead Reserves side beat second place Coombe St Nicholas 2-0 who needed to win to gain promotion and the title.

The players and managment are said to already be looking forward to next season and can’t wait to get going when pre-season kicks off in early July.

Anyone wishing to attend Pre-season please contact 1st team manager Alan Smith on 07857696629.

The recent exceptionally-high volume of rainfall during April and May has replenished resevoirs, meaning that Bristol is no longer in drought and Bristol Water have confirmed they have no plans to restrict water consumption in Bristol this summer.
exceptional rainfall has restored many rivers, reducing pressure on the environment.

The Environment Agency’s Paul Gainey, said the levels of recent rainfall had been “unprecedented”, with 6 months rain had fallen in just 6 weeks.

Mr Gainey said: “In the South West we have had about three times more rain in April that we would normally expect, and it will continue to be very wet in May.

“The exceptionally heavy rain has taken pressure off the environment, and for that reason we decided to remove the drought status for the whole of the South West, including Bristol.

“We will still be monitoring groundwater supplies, the water under the ground, which is the most difficult to replenish.

“Because of the exceptionally heavy rainfall, it looks like we will have a bit of a respite.”

However, Bristol Water’s Paul Kelson warned of potential restrictions later in the year.

“We don’t expect to have any water restrictions this year now, though we will still have to be careful and manage our resources ahead of the winter.”

April saw an almost unprecedented level of rainfall in our catchment area. Over three times the average rainfall fell compared to what we would normally expect. From a resource point of view this exceptionally high rainfall has been very welcome. May so far has been a similar story.

Current resource position for our lake sources

The recent rain has boosted reservoirs considerably with the overall level now increased to 97% full. This is now above the company’s guidelines for this time of year.

Chew Lake is 97% full (76% this time last year); Blagdon Lake is 100% full (83% this time last year) whilst Cheddar Reservoir is 99% full (95% this time last year).

The Barrow Reservoirs are 81% full (89% this time last year)

Mendip rainfall this year:

In January we had 80% of the expected average rainfall, in February we had 34% and in March we only received 36% of the average rainfall. As a consequence inflow to reservoirs stopped in January. Up until April we did not anticipate our reservoirs gaining much inflow as we headed into the spring and summer months.

April Rainfall. Total rainfall for April was 159.2mm . The average for the month is 55mm.

So far in May we have had 58.8mm. The average for the month is 65mm.

The company has no plans for any restrictions to customers water use over the summer.

Two years of dry weather

The last two years have been the 4th driest in the past 160 years. Winter rainfall was unusually low, and meant that our reservoirs effectively stopped refilling much earlier than usual. The last month and a half of heavy rainfall has reversed the impact of poor winter recharge.

of your registration, you receive your own personal barcode, which you print and bring along with you to each run you take part in. This barcode is used as part of a simple, yet effective time recording system so you can constantly track your results. it with you each time you run.

Shoppers will be able to sit back and catch the best of the action from the world’s most famous grand slam. Whether you’re cheering for Murray or rooting for Nadal, Quakers Friars provides the ideal setting for watching Wimbledon, so why not bring along some strawberries and cream, grab a deckchair and watch the tennis.

As Olympic fever sets in the screen will return to Quakers Friars just in time for the Games – if you want to experience the excitement and atmosphere, then head to Quakers Friars for live open air screenings and follow the most hotly anticipated competitions.

Whether you want to take in the opening ceremony in style, catch the best of Britain’s talent in the cycling or are a fan of the athletics, you won’t have to miss a moment in this exciting year. Beginning on 27th July, all of the Olympic action will be shown live until the closing ceremony on 12th August.

Kevin Duffy, Cabot Circus Centre Director said, “This summer promises to be a very exciting time for Britain and we are bringing all of the action to Quakers Friars.
According to witnesses Ibrahim M and Matt A, Police initially attended to the motor around 12:45, and unsuccessfully attempted to bring the blaze under control. “The flames just seemed to engulf the car within minutes, the Police really didn’t stand a chance” Ibrahim said.

Despite the recent wet weather, Bristol Water has indicated that the risk of water restrictions such as hosepipe bans in Bristol may be likely later in the year, should the situation not improve and are therefore asking everyone to be more considered with their water usage.

Bristol Water continues to urge customers to be sensible with their water usage despite the current cooler, damper weather.

Although there is no immediate threat to public water supplies at present, we ask customers to be careful in their use of water and remember, every drop you use ultimately has to come from the same rivers and springs that are now at risk of damage due to the drought.

Whatever is wasted today could well be much needed later in the summer.

The last two years have been the 4th driest in the past 160 years. Winter rainfall from November to March has been the lowest since 1975/76. These conditions have meant that our reservoirs effectively stopped refilling over two months earlier than usual.

It would take much more significant, sustained rainfall over the next month to improve the position.
The company has been taking action for months to conserve reservoir stocks. We have done this by maximising use of groundwater sources and transferring large volumes of water from the River Severn. This year we are on target to achieve the lowest leakage rate in the company’s history somewhere around 15% below the level set by the industry regulator Ofwat.

If the generally dry conditions continue over the next few months, reservoir storage will rapidly fall, reducing the water we will have available later in the year and make it difficult to refill reservoirs to a safe level in time for 2013.

We are carefully monitoring the levels of reservoirs relative to trigger levels set out in our drought plan. These trigger levels ill initiate actions to reduce water consumption. Initially these actions will be appeals and the continued provision of water saving devices to help customers use less water. If these appeals are not effective we may ultimately have to consider banning the use of hosepipes and other discretionary water uses by domestic customers.

What is April Fools’ Day?

April Fools’ Day is celebrated in different countries in the Northern Hemisphere on April 1 every year. Sometimes referred to as All Fools’ Day, April 1 is not a national holiday, but is widely recognized and celebrated as a day when many people play all kinds of jokes and foolishness. The day is marked by the commission of good-humoured or otherwise funny jokes, hoaxes, and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, teachers, neighbors, work associates, etc.

Cabot Circus will be supporting the British Heart Foundation (BHF) in National Heart Month by turning the Bristol Wheel Red and offering free blood pressure checks on George White Street on Friday 24th February from 10.30am – 3pm.

The Bristol Wheel – located at the Podium in Broadmead – will be illuminated red from Thursday to Sunday to celebrate ‘Wear Red Day’ and to raise awareness of heart disease in the UK. Nurses from Lloyds Pharmacy will also be on hand in Cabot Circus to give free blood pressure checks and offer advice to shoppers on how to keep a healthy heart.

With over 2.7 million people in the UK currently suffering with heart disease, Cabot Circus is raising money to support Red for Heart, the BHF’s fundraising campaign which encourages people across the UK to think about their hearts and raise money to save lives.

Kevin Duffy, Centre Director at Cabot Circus, said “We are delighted to be involved with the BHF and to help raise awareness of the very important issue of heart health. We encourage our shoppers to take advantage of the free blood pressure tests and get free advice on healthy living on Friday.”

Lucy Saunders, BHF Fundraising Volunteer Manager for Bristol, said: “Our Red for Heart campaign encourages everyone to get involved in fundraising events throughout National Heart Month, as well as taking part in National Wear Red Day. We’re really grateful to Cabot Circus and the Bristol Wheel for going Red for Heart, as without the continued support of organisations and fundraising individuals across the nation, we couldn’t continue our life saving work in the fight against heart disease – the nation’s biggest killer.”

There was said to be concern by some that a drought could affect the Bristol Water region, given recent news that the south east of England is now officially in a state of drought, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs confirmed.

“The reservoirs have risen by 1% from last week and now stand at an average of 78% full. That is 1% higher than at this time last year and very close to the guidelines. Bristol Water does NOT have a drought and is NOT planning any hose bans.

Over the week, Chew Lake stayed the same at 73% full (71% this time last year); Blagdon Lake is 76% full (84% this time last year) whilst Cheddar Reservoir is 96% full (81% this time last year).

The Barrow Reservoirs are 73% full (89% this time last year)

Mendip rainfall: Total for December was 108.2 mm (102% of the average). Total rainfall for January was 77.00 mm (82% of the average). The standard average for the whole month is 94 mm. So far in February we have had 12.8m (average for the month is 67mm)”
