Did you know that skin is the LARGEST organ of the body, our skin is amazing…constantly healing, cleansing and regenerating itself.

Further functions are also equally fascinating … it is waterproof, keeps out bacteria and controls our body temperature. These are but a few, of the skins many actions that happen on a continual basis. So with all this going on, is it any wonder why our skin might need, a little bit of help, to keep healthy and glowing. Following these tips will help do just that…..

1. Always use sun screens spf 15-25. UVA and UVB sun damage causes dramatic skin aging, by attacking the collagen and elastin fibers. If possible try and avoid the sun between the hours of 11am and 3 pm. Wear sunglasses to protect the eyes.

2. Sleeping Beauty; our body repairs itself at night. So a good 8hrs sleep a night is essential for healthy skin and mind.

3. Hydration; water is an important nutrient for the body, helping the body functions in many ways. 4-5 glasses a day is fine for healthy skin as this helps rid the body of nasty toxins that can build up, an example of this is puffy under eyes.

4. Moisturising; we actually need two moisturisers a year, one light for the summer months and a heavier cream for the winter months. The use of moisturisers is important because of an ingredient called humectants which helps lock in the skins moisture. I recommend Pharmagels dn24 for winter months and hydoxy10 for the summer months (all Pharmagels moisturiserscontain PABA-free sunscreen )

5. Vitamin C; for me this MUST in my daily skin routine. Used underneath moisturiser, this powerful serum helps to actively stimulate the collagen production, keeping the facial contours firm, tight and youthful looking. For skin that suffers breakouts I would recommend a Vitamin A serum.

6. Exfoliation; is an important part of a skin routine if you want healthy skin, when we are in our teen and 20’s the top layer of our skin renews itself every 3-4weeks without exfoliation. However, as we age that process slows down, the result is a dull looking complexion. So by exfoliating twice a week for 5mins you will enable other products, like moisturisers to work more effectively helping the skin to look and feel more radiant.

7. Choosing the right cleanser for your skin type, will help with problems such as dryness. Choose one that is ph-balanced, gel cleansers are good because even the driest skins find them exceptionally mild yet tough on dirt.

8. See your salon therapist at least once a month. She/he can assess any skin problems you may be having and work out a plan of action. Both in the salon and at home.

9. Hormones can play havoc with your skin. If you think this applies to you visit both your doctor and therapist.

10. Diet: a healthy balanced diet is important giving your body the fuel it needs to carry out its ongoing functions, supplements can also aid. Take the at lunch time because the digestive systems is working at it’s best then, not first thing in the morning as most of us do.
