Felonious Leprechauns Shot Dead On St. Patrick’s Day

Gallatin, Tennessee: Two men dressed as leprechauns, who were suspected of having robbed a bank on St. Patrick’s Day, are reported to have died of gunshot wounds after a shootout with police.

The two suspects, who have yet to be identified, allegedly disabled a patrol car and fired at police when they were chased from a bank.

Gallatin police Sgt. Bill Storment told Tennessean.com:

I don’t know that both suspects were shot by police. I don’t know if perhaps one suspect shot the other or if one shot himself.

Police recovered an undisclosed amount of a cash in the getaway vehicle and a .45-caliber handgun with one of the suspects.

Sexting Flight Crew Face Jail

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: An Indian flight attendant and her cabin services supervisor were convicted of “coercion to commit sin” on the basis of saucy text messages that they exchanged with each other.

The pair were originally sentenced to six months in jail, but an appeal reduced the sentence to three months and quashed their deportation order.

According to Reuters, the charges stemmed from a lawsuit filed against the the flight attendant by her husband a year ago, in which he suggested that she was involved in an illicit relationship with her supervisor.

The flight attendant and her husband initiated divorce proceedings in 2007.

Inmate Busted After Telling Mom Where to Find Coke

Osceola County Jail, Florida: It is generally good to take things that people tell you in prison with a pinch of salt, unless of course it is a message on the prison phone telling you that your call is being recorded.

A 300-pound alleged drug trafficker chose not to suspend his disbelief when he revealed the whereabouts of two ounces of cocaine when he called his mother from Osceola County jail.

In the course of the conversation, Franco Mayernik’s mother asked if he had left anything at Spank’s house, he told her about the two ounces of powder in a cushion on Spank’s couch – and the rest, as they say is history.

According to The Orlando Sentinel, a detective recorded the following in his arrest report:

I listened to the phone conversation and heard his mother ask him if he left anything at Spank’s house. Franco told his mother he left two ounces of powder in the cushion on the couch. ‘Powder’ is street terminology for cocaine.

Deputies arrived at the Spank residence a few hours later after Mayernik’s sister left the home empty-handed and asked Christopher “Spank” Eaton and Alexandria Dykes if they could come in and have a look around. At the risk of sounding critical, if the deputies in question are asking for permission to come inside, chances are that it is because they do not yet have the authority to do so.

If the caliber of Mayernik’s alleged accomplices is anything to go by, there is little wonder why he was busted in the first place.

After the deputies requested entry, Dykes replied:

Sure, come in and search whatever you want. We are going to cooperate with you. We don’t need any more trouble.

At the conclusion of the search of the living room, detectives had not found the powder they were looking for, but they did find four ecstasy pills, so they asked if they could search the rest of the house.

Dykes agreed, but wanted to take her dog out of her bedroom first. That was when the deputies saw her taking two bags of powder, containing 57 grams of cocaine and 2 grams of oxycodone, out of a pair of shoes.

The arrest report continued:

Eaton spontaneously stated, ‘Look, man, I am sorry we lied to you. … Franco has never done anything for me so I figured I would just go to Polk County and sell this to make some money.’

The discovery of the powder added a cocaine trafficking charge to the list of 15 misdemeanors and felonies, including trying to kill or injure a police dog, that stemmed from his recent arrest.

Eaton and Dykes were subsequently charged with cocaine trafficking, possession of marijuana, possession of controlled substances without a prescription and drug paraphernalia. Bail for each of them was set at $50,000.

Baby Unharmed After Father Left Him in Oven

McCracken County, Kentucky: A night of whiskey and marijuana could have turned out worse for Larry Long, but not a lot worse.

After smoking marijuana at work, the 33-year-old cook returned home to consume the lion’s share of a fifth of whiskey with the baby’s mother, Brandy Hatton. After four or five shots, Hatton went to bed, leaving Long with their five-week-old son and the rest of the bottle.

That’s when things got a little crazy. When Hatton woke up at 5:30, she heard the baby crying. She followed the cries to the kitchen, where she found her son in the oven. Mercifully, the oven was off and the door was slightly ajar. Police claim that he had been there for several hours.

The incident was reported by staff at a mental health crisis line that Long called when he realized what he had done. He believes that his actions were the result of his marijuana being laced with a hallucinatory drug.

Long was charged with first degree wanton endangerment and is being held on bail of $10,000. The baby is now in the care of family members.

Dentist Saved Money Performing Paperclip Root Canals

Fall River, Massachusetts: A former dentist has been accused of claiming $130,000 in false Medicaid claims, prescribing drugs to himself and using paper clips instead of stainless steel posts for root canals.

Michael Clair, who was suspended from the Medicaid program 8 years ago, was indicted at the conclusion of an investigation performed by the attorney general’s Medicaid fraud division that began in 2005.

The Herald News reports that following his suspension the 51-year-old dentist hired other dentists who were eligible to bill Medicaid. It is also alleged that Clair prescribed Combunux, Hydrocondone and Percocet to his staff members, who gave some or all of the drugs back to him.

Perhaps the most shocking allegation against the disgraced dentist is that he used paperclips in place of more expensive stainless steel posts in root canal surgery. The attorney general’s office noted that while paperclips are acceptable for temporary use, if used long-term they run the risk of causing infection and pain.

The litany of charges against the dentist includes : five counts of false Medicaid claims, three counts of larceny of more than $250, two counts of illegally prescribing a Class B substance, two counts of assault and battery, and illegally prescribing a Class C substance.

Man Fatally Overdoses at Clean Drug Test Party

Polk County, Florida: There are ways to celebrate testing clean at your court-ordered drug test: a champagne toast, a cup of herbal tea, a few moments of reflection on the fact that you avoided court-ordered prison; and then there is the Michael Edwin Berg way.

According to The Florida Times, on September 4, 2009, the 23-year-old Berg, opted for a night of beer and vodka with the guys and then toasted his freedom from chemical dependence by drinking a shot of morphine. Thirteen hours later, he was dead.

A friend of Berg’s, Daniel Aleman, admitted to giving him the drug – prompting police to charge the 23-year-old with third-degree murder.

Man Fined For Trying to Use Genitals as a Deadly Weapon

Scoff if you will, but the man in this picture, one Marium Varinauskas, was recently fined £600 for assaulting a female police officer with his penis.

The story is that Varinauskas’ girlfriend called the cops on her boyfriend because she was none too pleased with his, surprise surprise, drunkenness. The police found the 28-year0old Lithuanian on the couch in his underwear.

The attending officers sat on a nearby couch–it was at this point that Varinauskas and his penis went on the offensive. Apparently, according to a police report, the alleged assailant “got to his feet and was standing over the police officer exposing his penis and thrusting it in her face forcing her to take evasive action to avoid getting struck.”

I wonder…do they teach penis-evading techniques at Lithuanian police college?

Varinauskas claims that he can’t remember his drunken penis-attack, due to, well, his drunkenness. Instead of going to trial, Varinauskas pleaded guilty and was assessed the £600 fine yesterday.

Job Center Apologizes For Ejecting Jedi Via Force

Southend, Essex, UK: Chris Jarvis, 31, scored a point for Star Wars fanatics when he received a formal apology over a force-related incident that occurred at an employment center.

Jarvis, a member of The International Church of Jediism, was told to remove his hood or leave his local branch of JobCentre Plus – and everyone knows that you don’t ask Jedi to remove his or her hood. When he refused, security ejected him from the premises.

Jarvis filed a formal complaint, which was responded to in writing by the branch manager three days later.

Manager Wendy Flewers expressed her apologies for the religious discrimination that Jarvis had suffered:

We are committed to provide a customer service which embraces diversity and respects customers’ religion.

Jarvis explained his point of view to The Sun:

I was just standing up for my beliefs. Muslims can walk around in whatever religious gear they like, so why can’t I?

Police Serve Up Non-compliant Lesbian Sergeant to Military Brass

Rapid City, South Dakota: By now most people are familiar with the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gay servicemen and women. Under the policy, people who keep their private lives a secret are allowed to serve. But what happens if someone else informs the military about a person’s sexual orientation?

Jene Newsome, 28, found out the hard way when a couple of vindictive police officers decided to inform military authorities about the Air Force sergeant’s sexual preferences.

Newsome was legally married to her partner (who has not been named) in a legal ceremony in Ohio last October. When police came to Newsome’s home to serve an arrest warrant to her spouse for a theft charge in Fairbanks, Alaska, they ordered her to immediately return home to assist them with their investigation. She refused. That is when police said they spotted her marriage certificate on the kitchen table.

In an action that seems somewhat vindictive, instead of recognizing Newsome’s right to spousal privilege, the police officers in question chose to inform the military of Newsome’s lesbianism.

Police Chief Steve Allender justified his officer’s actions in a statement to the Associated Press. After explaining that the license was relevant because it showed the relationship status and the living arrangements of Newsome and her partner.

He added:

It’s an emotional issue and it’s unfortunate that Newsome lost her job, but I disagree with the notion that our department might be expected to ignore the license, or not document the license, or withhold it from the Air Force once we did know about it. It was a part of the case, part of the report and the Air Force was privileged to the information.

Newsome disagreed in her statement to the Associated Press:

I played by ‘don’t ask, don’t tell. I just don’t agree with what the Rapid City police department did. … They violated a lot of internal policies on their end, and I feel like my privacy was violated.

ACLU South Dakota allege that the reason that the officers informed the military was that they knew that it would jeopardize her military career. Newsome also charges that she did not know where her marriage license was in her home on November 20 when police came to arrest her partner.

Israeli Supermarket Advertisers Channel Hamas Leader’s Assassins

The assassination of Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh made for some pretty exciting news, who would have thought that it could help to sell groceries?

Apparently the creative minds behind an advertisement for the Mahsaney Kimat Hinam (“Almost Free Warehouses”) grocery and retail chain thought they could. A man with a tennis racket was there, so was a woman with a hat and it was all tied together with some grainy CCTV-esque footage in order to promote “the shooting down of prices”.

Presumably no foreign passports were used in the shooting of the commercial, but that doesn’t make it any less crass.
