Year 2011 is over. It is time to plan to lose weight in early year, after new year celebration and holidays. Diabetes topic is always a topic i would like to share, seeing most people are not sensitive to weight-related health problems, especially diabetes.

Some facts of diabetes to lose weight

Whether you aware of it or not, overweight people are twice as likely to develop lifetyle-related Type 2 Diabetes (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) as people who are not overweight. Those with severe obesity are 30 times more likely to develop this form of diabetes; the risk is 10 times greater in moderately obese patients. That is why you need to decide to lose weight and enroll in a healthy weight loss program if you really care about yourself.

Type 2 Diabetes reduces your body’s ability to control your blood sugar. It is a major cause of early death, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke and blindness.

According to the study from Diabetes Care on nurses, the risk of diabetes increased 5-fold for those with a body mass index (BMI) of 25, 28-fold for those with BMI of 30, and 93-fold for those with BMI of 35 or greater.

Women who gained 8 to 11 kg in weight during the period of study had a 2.7 fold increased risk of diabetes compared to women of stable weight. Similarly, the risk of diabetes in men increased for all BMI levels of 24 or obove.

The risk of diabetes, adjusted for age, is 2.2 fold for a BMI between 25 and 26.9, 6.7-fold for BMI between 29 and 30, and 42-fold for those with a BMI or 35 or greater. That is why those who overweight or obese need to think a way to lose weight.

A Need to Lose Weight due to High Casualties

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned of a diabetes epidemic with the number affected rising from 140 million to 300 million in the next 25 years. According to the WHO, of the 85% of people with Type 2 diabetes in the world today, 90% are obese or overweight. This rise the need to lose weight.

In addition, the WHO warns that if current trends continue, large increases would also be observed in China, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the rest of Asia. The diets in such countries are typically energy-dense, high in saturated fats and depleted in dietary fiber.

According to a report, diabetes associated with obesity is spreading faster throughout Asia, estimating at 60 million diabetics and growing — than anywhere else. It is a fact that Asians are not sensitive to weight-related health problems, such as Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease. In this case, we need to create awareness about the effects and encourage them to take effort to lose weight accordingly.

What you can do? Lose weight is the answer!

You can reduce your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes by taking effort to lose weight and by becoming more physically active. Read the Type 2 Diabetes article if you already have it and want to lose weight. If you use medicine to control your blood sugar, lose weight and physical activity may make it possible for your doctor to decrease the amount of medication you need.

Good news is it has been found that a 5% to 7% weight loss can reduce the risk of diabetes. Besides, reduction in fat and calories intake accompanies by half hour walk or other exercise each day lowered the incidence by 58%. In people over 60, these reduce the development of diabetes by 71%. So take care of food and nutrition as well as adjusting your lifestyle will help you to lose weight effectively.

So, what you can do if you are obese? Lose weight is definitely the answer!

Obesity in kids is a matter of fact that commonly seen, and the number of obese children keeps increasing worldwide. Obesity in kids is more likely seen if their parents are obese. Anyway, the main reason is not genetic factors, but the fact that the families tend to share eating and activity habits. In other words, most children eat too much and put on excess weight due to unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity.

Obesity in kids: Unhealthy diet

Obesity in kids is commonly seen nowadays because high-calorie foods such as fast food and confectionery are heavily promoted to public especially children. If the adults’ decision are deeply affected by the advertising, what do you think the kids?

A study published by The American Academy of Pediatrics reveals that eating fast food negatively impacts the diets of American children in ways that could increase risk of obesity in kids. Early exposure to fatty food could reconfigure children’s bodies so that they always choose fatty foods, causing obesity in kids’ issue.

More worrying is bad eating habits established in early life often extend into adulthood. This means obesity in kids is just the beginning of the story. Obese children are likely to become obese adults. A study revealed in the New Scientist found that when young rats are fed in a high-fat diet, they invariably became obese later in life.

In the report, it is found that raised levels of fats called triglycerides in the bloodstream turns on genes for neuro-peptides such as galanin that promote overating. This suggests that children fed kid’s meals at fast-food restaurants are more likely to grow up to be burger-bingeing adults. At that stage, they will be the group that needs a program for weight loss. That is why obesity in kids issue should be handled seriously.

Obesity in kids: Aggressive Marketing?

I cannot deny the role of advertising that affects the decision that most people make. Unless you aware and concern about the food your children eat will either create obesity in kids issue or bring them a healthy body weight, you normally will decide based on subconscious mind, that affected deeply by the advertisement.

In fact, nutrition advocates and some doctors’ group overseas insist that the food industry, which spends billions of dollars each year on advertising for junk food and sugary drinks, should share some blame for the creeping problem of obesity in kids and adults. In the Unite States for example, McDonald;s and Burger King together spent more that US$1 billion on advertising in 1999. The US National Cancer Institute’s “5-a-day” campaign promoting fruits and vegetables that same year had a budget of only US$1 million. The ratio is not better in 10 years later.

Is is found that quite a number of advertising is devoted to promote the foods that contribute to obesity. They are found heavily advertised on the television and specifically in connection with programs that children watch. According to the Worldwatch Institute, the States’ children are bombarded with 40,000 television ads per year, in which half of them promote unhealthy food and drinks. So, do you think that obesity in kids relates to the aggressive marketing strategies?

Obesity in kids: Start Aware the food

Remember that the food habits we acquire when young tend to persist throughout our lives. That is why we need to build the good diet habit for our children to avoid or reduce obesity in kids issue. When we eat, we do not need advertising to direct us. Of course, we do need a correct information about food and nutrition besides having regular exercise to maintain good health.

Obesity in kids could be avoided if we look seriously about the food we let our children eat. Let’s reduce the risk of health for our kids by reducing the number of obesity in kids.

What is Gallstones

Is overweight related to gallstones forming? Let’s have a look. Gallstones are small, pebble-like substances that develop in the gallbladder. Gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped sac located below your liver in the right upper abdomen. When the liquid, named bile stored in the gallbladder contains too much cholesterol, bile salts or bilirubin (a waste product), it can be harden into pieces of stone-like material or gallstones. Bile is made in the liver, then stored in the gallbladder until the body needs it to help digesting fats.

In fact, cholesterol is the primary ingredient in most gallstones. Cholesterol stones account for about 80 percent of gallstones while the other pigment stones are small, dark stones made of bilirubin.

Studies related to Gallstones

According to Digestion study, people with gallstones may consume too many calories. Study from American Journal of Clinical Nutrition also revealed that people with gallstones are often overweight.

Based on American estimates, an obese man is 21% more likely to develop gallstones. Obese women have seven times the risk of forming gallstones compared with women who are not overweight. That is why obese people are advised to enroll in a healthy weight loss program for any health reasons.

Another study from American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates that increasing BMI is associated with a substantially increased risk of the development of gallstones; women with BMI more than 45 have a 7-fold increase compared to normal-weight women.

In addition, the risk of gallstones in middle-aged women rises dramatically with increase in weight. According to a large-scale Harvard study, obese women were 6 times as prone to gallstones as women of normal weight. The study found that women only 10 pounds overweight had nearly double the chance of developing gallstones. Thus, healthy weight loss is a must if you or any of your family members are overweight.

One important thing to highlight is if you have high triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol, your susceptibility to gallstones rises too. So, take care of your body and aware that maintaining a healthy body weight is as important as other things in your life.

What you can do to prevent gallstones

You need to change your diet. Eat more food rich in fibers. A study of residents of southern Italy revealed that a diet rich in sugars and animal fats and poor in vegetable fats and fibers was a significant risk factor for gallstones formation.

Most studies report that vegetarians are at low risk for gallstones. In some trials, vegetarians had only half the gallstones risk compared with meat eaters. Vegetarians often eat fewer calories and less cholesterol. They also tend to weigh less than meat eaters. All of these differences may reduce gallstones incidence.

The conclusion is try reducing the risk of gallstones by joining a healthy weight loss program if you are overweight.

The later is often caused by atherosclerosis, a common seen heart disease, a condition that the build-up of fatty plaques in arteries that inhibit blood flow.

In fact, studies reveal that excess body weight is a risk factor for stroke. So, enroll into a program for weight loss if you are obese and want to reduce the above risk.

Stroke Risk for Men

Studies indicated that men who are obese are twice as likely as their leaner peers to suffer from stroke risk. A study from Archives of Internal Medicine, 2001 revealed that for each additional point increase in BMI over 25 (ie for every weight gain of 6 to 7 pounds), the risk of stroke rose 6%.

It is not clear from the report how BMI affects stroke risk. However, some data suggest that higher blood levels of compounds that are associated with clotting in overweight individuals may be to blame. Thus, you might need to consider to join a program for weight loss if you are obese.

Stroke Risk for Women

Women who are obese or who have gained more than 44 pounds (20kg) since they were 18 years old are about 2 times more likely to suffer ischaemic stroke than lean women who have not gained a lot of weight. This study is from Journal of the American Medical Association and ischaemic stroke is a stroke caused by the blockage of a blood vessel in the brain or neck.

Another study from Stroke, 2002 revealed that obesity itself damaged blood vessels, even in the absence of high blood pressure and other known risk factors for artery disease. Therefore, you need to consider joining a healthy program for weight loss if you are obese.

Besides, in a research of middle-aged Italian women, obesity was directly related to thickening of the carotid arteries, the large vessels in the neck that deliver blood to the brain. Such thickening increases the risk of stroke and is an early sign of disease in other arteries, including those that supply the blood to the heart.

Avoid Stroke if You Can

Since various studies show that obesity increases stroke risk, it is advisable to look for a healthy program for weight loss if you are overweight or obese. Besides maintaining healthy life style and having right exercise, you can always find a buddy whenever going for a weight loss program.

Minimize the stroke risk if you care about yourself and your family.

Obesity and Fast Food

Fast food is all the rage among today’s people especially youths due to rapid expansion of fast food outlets and aggressive marketing campaigns. This scenario is not only seen in developed countries, but also developing countries. According to the health experts, this has been linked to expanding waistlines and obesity issues.

Take United States for an example. According to National Bureau of Economic Statistics’ study, it indicated that fast food companies are responsible for more than 65% of the rise in American obesity. And more than US$50 billion of the annual health care costs that obesity imposes on taxpayers.

It is also found that one-quarter of the adult population visit fast food restaurants on any given day. Besides, it is estimated that at least 30% of all United States public high schools offer some type of name-brand fast food; and more than a third of the hospitals selected as “America’s Best” by US news and World Report for 2002, boast a fast food outlet on their premises.

We take Japan as another example. Is is found that there is a 5-fold increase of fat consumption in Japan since World War II, where more than a quarter of the people’s diet now consists of high fat. People get fatter, rates of diabetes and other health problems are climbing skyward as a result.

Obesity caused by dietary issue

In fact, there are three things about fast food that experts have worried, which related to obesity and health issues:

1) High-fat content

There is evidence that fast food contain fat, saturated fat, and calories in amounts higher than most consumers need. Just take McDonald’s as an example. According to US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it suggests that under a typical 2000 calories-a-day diet, the recommended fat intake should not exceed 65 grams. In the US, the McDonald’s Big Mac has been found to contain 34 grams of fat – more than half the FDA’s recommended daily allowances.

Anyone who eats 2 Big Macs – which is not impossible, because high fat food food is reported to be addictive, would have exceeded their daily fat requirement. Another food items sold by McDonald’s in the US, the Spanish Omelet Bagel, contains even more fat ie 38 grams. Chicken McNuggets, seemingly a healthier option than McDonald’s hamburgers because they have ‘chicken’ in their names, actually contain twice the fat per ounce as a hamburger.

2) Super size meals and drinks

Large serving of food portion nowadays contributes to overeating, and this is one of the main factors leading to obesity issues. Please refer the food portions article for further information.

3) Fat and sugar could be addictive

We might know eating less fat and sugar for healthy weight loss purpose. Anyway, fat and sugar could be addictive, causes you eat more than what you need, and thus creates obesity issue. In a study at Princeton University, carried by a team of physiologists from two countries, found that rats fed a diet containing 25% sugar are thrown into a state of anxiety when the sugar is removed. They have withdrawal symptoms, including chattering teeth and the shakes, similar to those seen in people withdrawing from drugs. Same thing happens to eating fat. Please read the article weight loss program for further details on how fat fails your healthy weight loss program.

Conclusion for Causes of Obesity

Dietary is very important factor to look seriously if you want to have a successful weight loss program. You need to aware what is the real causes of obesity and the reason behind besides adjusting your life style and start exercising.

You need to put effort if you really want to get rid of obesity!

Foods to avoid in weight loss program

It is advisable to avoid eating foods high in fat even though you are not in your weight loss program. Why? This is because your body does not need so much of fat. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, it is recommended that daily intake for a normal male adult is 2,800 kilocalories (or 11,723 kilojoules) and a maximum of 93 grams of fat. A meal at a fast food outlet such as burger, fries, drink and dessert can deliver almost all of that in a single sitting. How about the food you take in the rest of the day? It ends up you consume excess calories that will be stored as fat, and you put on weight. Years by years, and you finally decide to search for a weight loss program.

The impact is far more worse than you think. This is because lovers of burgers, fries, fizzy drinks and other fast foods could be in the grip of an addiction similar to that experienced by users of hard drugs, scientists claim. And thus you tend to eat more fat subsequently.

According to the study of Ann Kelley, a neuro-scientist at the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison, it is found that rats that overindulge in tasty foods in 2 weeks time show marked, long-lasting changes in their brain chemistry similar to those caused by extended use of morphine or other drugs. That suggests that you could be addicted to food.

In the same study, the overstimulated rats ate up 6 times the amount of fat they normally eat. Besides, they also increase their intake of sweet, salty and alcohol-containing solutions, even though they are not hungry. This subsequently leads to obesity, and turns up seeking help from a weight loss program.

How does Fat Fail your weight loss program 1

Biologists are now starting to realise that a binge of high fat diet can trigger physiological changes, which mute the hormonal signals that normally tell you to put down the fork. In addition, exposure to fatty foods may quickly reconfigure the body’s hormonal system to want yet more fat, according to Sarah Leibowitz, a neuro-biologist at Rockefeller University in New York City. When that happens, it will definitely fail your weight loss program.

Sara’s experiments reveal that levels of galanin, a brain peptide that stimulates eating and slows down energy expenditure, increase in rats when they eat a high fat diet. In fact, it only takes 1 high-fat meal to stimulate the galanin expression. And when the effects of galanin are blocked, the animals eat much less fat. According to her, the peptide is itself responsive to the consumption of fat, which then creates the basis for a vicious cycle. So if you decide to take up any weight loss program, you need to aware and adjust your diet habit for optimal weight loss results.

How does Fat Fail your weight loss program 2

High fat diet disrupts your leptin system. Low levels of leptin result in food cravings; while higher level of leptin tends to suppress appetite but are also associated with tissues becoming less sensitive to the hormone, and contributing to craving and more weight gain. This will cause you to seek for a weight loss solution in later life.

In a study of Diabetes, vol 50, physiologist Luciano Rossetti from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City fed rats a high-fat diet and found that the animals had already lost almost all of their ability to respond to leptin after just 72 hours.

Conclusion

Food and nutrition as well as your lifestyle affect the progress of a weight loss program. Now you know that you can be addicted to those tasty food especially high fat and sugar diet. By triggering physiological changes and disrupting leptin system, high fat diet also causes you want to eat more. Knowing these facts will certainly help you doing better in your weight loss program.

Hope you succeed in your weight loss program!

Generally, children are not considered obese until the weight is at least 10% higher than what is recommended for the height and body type. Besides, they are considered obese when their body weight has more than 25% fat in boys and 32% in girls.

According to The International Obesity Task Force (IOTF), it is estimated that 22 million of the world’s children under 5 years of age are obese children. The analysis reveals that overweight and obesity affects 1 in 10 children worldwide, but the rate is double in Europe and three times as great across the entire Americans. In fact, obese children have higher risk of developing serious health issues in later life.

Obese Children in North and South America

The number of overweight or obese children has doubled and the number of overweight adolescents has trebled since year 1980 in United States. The prevalence of obese American children aged 6 to 11 years has more doubled since 1960s. In American youths aged between 12 to 17, obesity prevalence has increased dramatically from 5% to 13% in boys, and from 5% to 9% in girls during 1966 to 1970 and 1988 to 1991 respectively.

In Brazil, study shows that more than 17% of 6 to 9 years old are obese children – a 3-fold rise since the mid-1970s.

Obese Children in Asia

Obese children are not just an issue for United States. This same issue has extended into Asia countries. In Thailand for example, obesity rates in children aged 5 to 12 have risen from 12.2% to 15.6% in just 2 years. In China, recent research indicates childhood obesity is rising at a rate of 9% each year. Statistic also reveals that it is about 10% of 10-year-old boys are obese, up from less than 4% in 1970 in Japan. In Saudi Arabia, a 1992 study found that 14% of pre-school children were obese children. That is why a healthy program for weight loss is a necessity now.

Obese Children in Europe

In UK, there is up to 15% of children are estimated to be overweight or obese. Nearly 10% of all 5 to 9 years old, and 16% of 6 to 15 year old are now classified as obese children. Besides, there is about 16% of French children are obese children, which is 2 times more than 10 years ago.

Obese Children in Africa

Study carried in Egypt indicated that nearly 9% of children 5 years old and younger are obese.

Conclusion

We need to concern about the figures about obese children revealed by the studies worldwide. Overweight or obese children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and practice right exercise. In fact, obesity is among the easiest medical conditions to recognize but most difficult to treat. Thus, a healthy program for weight loss is needed for those obese.

Look seriously about this if you have obese children in your house.

Risk in obese children: Type 2 Diabetes

According to World Health Organisation (WHO), the adverse health effects for obese children are already being seen in childhood itself. Confined to older adults for most of the 20th century, type 2 diabetes now affects obese children even before puberty. As such, healthy weight loss program is no more being offered to the adults, but also to the obese children.

In the United States alone, it is found that up to 45% of children with newly diagnosed diabetes have type 2 diabetes; most are overweight or obese at diagnosis.

In year 2002, a team of Yale University paediatricians released a study diagnosing glucose intolerance in about 25% of obese children and adolescents.

In fact, the emergence of type 2 diabetes in childhood is a serious development. This unusual pattern of premature type 2 diabetes is particularly difficult to manage once established. Thus, parents should aware and send their obese children for a healthy weight loss program to reduce the risk of suffering from type 2 diabetes. Early awareness is very important as type 2 diabetes can lead to heart and kidney disease, blindness and death.

Risk of obese children: Other health issues

Obese children might suffer from serious obesity-related health issues including sleep apnea, high blood pressure and heart disease. Obese children are also common associated with lung, gastrointestinal and circulatory problems during their childhood.

Study from Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that fatty liver disease, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea and orthopaedic problems were common in obese children.

According to a study from Pediatrics, 2003, 1000 girls and boys are followed over a period of eight years, in which their weight was tracked at yearly intervals. The study indicated obese children were more prone to have symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder or rule defying. It was found that chronically obese children are more than twice as likely to have symptoms of oppositional disorder than non-obese children.

The same study also shown that chronically obese boys were 4 times more likely to show signs of depressive disorder.

Conclusion for Obese Children

It is found that children are more likely to be overweight if their parents are obese. Although genetic factors count, it is less significant than the fact that families tend to share eating and activity habits together. If we want to reduce the number of obese children, adults should play a more active role in reviewing their diet and daily physical activity. This is the most effective way to reduce the number of obese children that needed to give concern.

In fact, there are many conditions that can undermine the heart’s ability to do its job. These include coronary heart disease, cardiomyopathy, arrhythmia, and heart failure. Among them, coronary heart disease and heart failure are risks which are related to obesity.

Heart Disease caused by Obesity

1) Coronary heart disease

Coronary heart disease is a disease of the blood vessels of the heart, known as “coronary arteries”. Serve as a precursor to heart attack, this disease, or atherosclerosis, is the most common blood vessel disease, caused by the build-up of the fatty deposits (sticky plaque) in the arteries. This causes the arteries to get narrow. As the coronary arteries narrow, blood flow to the heart can slow down or stop. The theory of this heart disease is simple. A people who has more fat on the body will lead to more fat in the blood stream, subsequently lead to more fat build-up in the arteries.

2) Congestive heart failure

Also known as heart failure, it is a condition that can result from any structural or functional cardiac disorder that impairs the ability of the heart to fill with or pump a sufficient amount of blood throughout the body. This heart disease does not mean your heart stops working. It means the heart can’t pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. Over time, the heart gets bigger to hold more blood, it pumps faster to increase the amount of blood moving out of it, and the blood vessels narrow. The heart muscle may also weaken, reducing the blood supply even more. At last, it leads to the heart and body’s failure.

According to the Framingham Heart Study (Circulation, 1983), our body weight, independent of several traditional risk factors, is directly related to the development of congestive cardiac failure. That is why you need to alert and enroll into a program for weight loss if you are obese.

Heart Disease Leads to Heart Attack

More than 1 million Americans suffer from heart attack every year– a sudden interruption in the heart’s blood supply. This happens when there is a blockage in the coronary arteries, the vessels that carry blood to the heart muscle. When blood flow is blocked, heart muscle can be damaged very quickly and die. Unless prompt emergency treatments taken, the risk of deaths is there for the heart disease.

Those who are obese who indulge in fatty meals are at risk of heart disease. Fatty meal increases the chance of a heart attack within 1 to 10 hours after eating. The fat of the food makes the blood cells clump and clog the arteries, literally shutting off some of them. Research reveals that many heart attack victims can recall a fatty meal preceding their heart attack. Please look seriously on this matter and decide to join a healthy program for weight loss before it is too late.

Symptoms of Heart Disease

Chest pain or discomfort (angina pectoris ) is the most common symptom. You feel this pain when the heart is not getting enough blood or oxygen. How bad the pain is varies from person to person.

Other symptoms of heart disease include:

Discomfort spreading to the back, jaw, arm or throat.

Nausea, indigestion, or heartburn.

Anxiety, weakness, or shortness of breath.

Irregular or rapid heartbeats.

Fatigue with activity (exertion)

Conclusion

Obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure are major risk factors for heart disease. The key to preventing heart disease is none other than a healthy lifestyle with a healthy body weight. This includes a nutritious diet, at least 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week and do not smoking. Take some actions to prevent heart disease for yourself and your family.
