Welcome to Part 3.  In Part 2 I outlined why you want to use the WordPress Platform to create and build your blog – on your own website.  Other platforms do not have the same options and capabilities as a wordpress blog on your own website.  From this Part onwwards, all features and benefits pertain to you have a wordpress blog on your own website.

Following is an essential element of making your blog function effectively and efficiently – creating content and connection with your marketplace.  Today we will cover the blog key feature known as Plug-Ins.

• Plug-ins (Installed,  Configured and Activated) enhance and ‘empower’ your basic wordpress blog shell.

Plugins can extend WordPress to do almost anything you can imagine. In the directory you can find, download, rate, and comment on all the best plugins the WordPress community has to offer.  For instance, the ”Share” buttons on this blog post is a plugin.  It was installed, configured and activated on the basic wordpress blog that this site started out as.

Here are some basic plugins that are essential to have on a wordpress blog on your own website. 

PLEASE NOTE: Using plug ins is a 3 step process:  1) Installation 2) Activation 3) Configuration.   There are five plug-ins in the following list that are not free.  There is a very good reason you want to pay for these.  They are plug-ins that distinguish your site from others because they include powerful attributes you will not get from the ones that are free.

What Key Features Must I Have On My Blog? 

-       Blog Key Features

Following is a checklist of some of the necessary features you will want to have installed and activated on your blog, so that you gain maximum benefit from the mass exposure of a well structured online marketing plan.

• WordPress Platform blog (this has fast become the world favorite).  A basic wordpress blog can be added to any site instantly (via cPanel –> Fantastico) and you can do this for free.  However, all you get is the ‘shell’ of the site with absolute bare-basic functionality.  You can ‘add a theme’ using a template design and/or you can engage a web designer to create a custom theme for you - you will want to do this if you want your blog site design  to include specifics about you – like your own photo.  In this example, you can see what a standard wordpress blog looks like – upon being ‘born’ and then a theme template is added to it as well as a designer customizing it, to be specific to me.  This is the cheapest way to get a custom-built blog designed to be run as a business to build your business and your brand. 

In this example, you see a basic blog transfored in to a theme-based then customized version.  This cost me less than $350 to get done.  I could get a theme added to a blog – easily and cheaper than that BUT getting a professional business web customization, I got a blog that will work for business.  There’s a HUGE difference between a web SITE and a web BUSINESS – and the same applies for blogs too.  Many people are fooled by the idea that they can get a cheap (and even free theme) added to a basic blog and that’s it!  BUT all they have is a template theme design, not a system for selling, as a web business.

BASIC (Original) WordPress Blog	……..	Theme-added and Customized version

Once you have your design and business presentation sorted out for you, you want to add plug ins to your blog.  Web Developers (these are the techno-geek peeps) around the world have created ‘plug-ins’ that are added to the basic blog to further enhance the power of the theme design and customization.  Together, the developers and designers improve functionality and also the impact your blog can have as a marketing tool.  Some Web Developers have no or very little understanding of design and many web designers have no or very little understanding of web development.   And soYOU as the web business owner need to have an understanding of what expectations to have, what person or persons you need to recruit and most importantly, what outcomes you need to achieve.  Remember, there is a great big difference between a web site and a web business – and the type of blog you have is as equally important. 

Web Developers have created amazing, powerful plugins to make your blog work at its best for you.  You will receive our list of recommended web business blog plugins later in this series.   

We recommend you set up your own site with a wordpress blog and never host it on a 3^rd party site like Blogger or WordPress.org – not only are you limited in functionality and impact, you have absolutely no control over the ‘real estate’.  Any decsions and changes they make, can affect you, without recourse.  You can use these 3rd party sites as a supplementary tool – in an advanced strategy – after you have built your own foundation.

• Be sure to have a VERY SECURE password for the wp-admin – login to your blog dashboard.  Make it as complicated as possible as hacking and hijacking is a constant pursuit of the underground on the inter-webs.

• Comments box:  This is critical, as mentioned previously.   Make it as easy and quick as possible for people to leave comments on your blog.  Avoid security checks as this can ‘kill the party’.  Experienced bloggers will use “gravatars” (explained later) so be sure to include these fields in your comments section:  “Name”, “Email” (not published), “Website”, “Comments”, “Submit”.  Ensure your comment box is at least 12 lines in height and at least 1/2 the width of your posts. 

• RSS Feed:

This should come standard with your blog, be sure it is activated as it is key to building your influence via many of the social media sites.  We recommend you add “Feedburner” to your RSS Feed set up.  More information about this will come in Part 6 of the series.

• Social Engine icons (placed above the scroll on your blog).

Add links to your social sites via image buttons (icons) on the side menu of your blog.  Ensure they appear ‘above the scroll’ – that means that they are visible upon loading a page on your blog, without scrolling.  You can do this quickly and easily by adding a social media links ‘widget’ to your blog side bar.  The widget we are using on this site is called ”Social Media Widget”.  You install it then add links to your different social profiles and channels and your links go to the relevant social site via its icon.  (Scroll back up the page to see ours if you missed it.) 

You add a widget via the plugin section of your wordpress blog dashboard (wp-admin)  Dashboard –>Appearance –> Plugins –> New.  When installed and activated, go to –> Widgets and activate it then customize it.

What is a blog?  How does it work, Why should I have one? 

-       Blog on your website and/or a website that is a blog

No matter what type of site you operate- a product sales site, a membership site, a directory site, a forum site or any other kind of site, it must contain a blog on it.  The entire site can be a blog or you can add a blog as a section to a non-blog website.  (BUT, your blog for business MUST be on your own web site!)  

A blog is blend of the terms web and log.  Blogs are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries, known as posts, of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order with the most recent post appearing at the top of the blog home page.  Blogs and blogging can be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.  

Most blogs are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments and even message each other via widgets on the blogs and easily share blog posts across the social engine landscape.   

It is this interactivity that distinguishes them from other static websites.  AND it is this inter-activity that makes them incredibly powerful tools to boost your profile, create impact and  build influence on the web.  The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of why blogs are so popular with people.  They are also very popular with search engines because they are generally editorial in nature and will are likely to help fulfill the needs of a person using their search function for information and a web page based on their chosen keywords.  

Blog topics vary and are usually best delivered and received under a theme or topic.  Blogs can provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function more as a personal diary. A typical blog combines text, images, audio, video and links to other blogs, web pages and other media related to its topic.  

Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on visuals like art and photography (an art blog or a photoblog), videos (video blogging), music (MP3 blog), and audio (podcasting). Micro-blogging is another type of blogging, featuring very short posts, similar to the 420 character status updates on Facebook.  

As of 16 February 2011 there were over 156 million public blogs in existence.  That number continues to grow.  

This video explains more about what a blog is: If you do not have a blog on your existing site, contact your webmaster or access your cPanel and install one via ‘Fantastico’.  You will then want to have a graphics person enhance the design for you, to match your existing site.

AND, DO YOU HAVE A STRATEGIC PLAN OR ARE YOU JUST MODELLING WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING?

People Make Buying Decisions Because Of What They ‘Hear’

From Others Just Like Them On Social Engines

Are The YES Decisions Including OR Excluding You?

Here’s what you can do right away to align your social engine efforts with a plan for a real return:

1)   Facebook – get a Page set up asap and ensure you complete ALL the information tabs, including a person who ‘owns/operates it’.  Search for Groups and other Pages you can make a positive, helpful contribution to.  Read the history in these groups and on these pages, paying particular attention to the potential for positive references to influence buying behaviour.  Network in a friendly, helpful manner.  People embrace good behavior quickly and banish bad behavior equally quickly.

2)  Twitter – search for other users via topic (hashtag) and connect with them.  Don’t look at Twitter like a digital advertising billboard. Take a genuine interest in striking up meaningful conversations and exchanging ideas and/or ooffering help – even to a perceived competitor.  In the early stages, make time to understand leaders on topics and in  niches. Make some notes on hot and trending topics that are relevant to you.  Write a blog about it/them.

3)  LinkedIn - complete your Profile to 100%.  Connect with suppliers/vendors, customers, colleagues that already know you.  Ask those that know you well to make a recommendation for you.  Add your blog feed and list any events you have coming up.  Search and join two groups on a topic directly related towhat you do.

4)  You Tube – create your own channel (url should be consistent with your business brand).  Use keywords to search for videos relevant to what you do.  View and select the top 5 and leave a video message comment on them.  Also, make a notation (file) of keywords that your top 5 use for their channel and individual videos.  Subscribe to your favorite channels and send a message to introduce yourself.

These tips are basic strategic moves to help position you for maximum success with minimal effort.  Consider this a new beginning.  It is time to stop wasting your precious money and resources on the Social Engines and instead – invest the next 30 days developing a strategic plan that is leveraged, built to last and delivers bucks directly in to your bank!  It is time, to make THAT promise to yourself!

 Today Facebook and Skype officially announced a new partnership which includes the complete integration of the Facebook newsfeed into Skype as well as the phonebook which lists all of a Skype user’s Facebook friends. This is another major partnership for Facebook who has announced numerous partnerships in recent weeks, including yesterday’s announcement with Bing.

According to the release, “the Facebook Phonebook in Skype allows users to call and SMS their Facebook friends directly on their mobile phones and landlines”.

While the major partnership between the two companies was first leaked a couple weeks ago, the official announcement just came this morning.

 Unfortunately, Mac users will be disappointed as this release is limited to P.C. users, although we’d expect it to be integrated into the next version of the Skype for Mac application.

This is a partnership of massive proportions as Skype also has a user base of 560 million, a number which Facebook should surpass in the near future (if they haven’t already).  Are you a Skype user? “Search More Social”

SEARCH ENGINE BING AND SOCIAL ENGINE FACEBOOK

NOW FULLY INTEGRATED!

Microsoft, the owner of Search Engine “Bing” and Facebook have strengthened their connection (and corporate friendship) with the announcement this week of the integration of Facebook user preferences into search results.

When you now search using Bing, data from your Facebook friends user profiles and pages as well as things they “Like” will be included in the results provided to you.  It’s considered an enhancement and a form of endorsement to the usual static results provided (that are arbitarially selected by the Search Engine).  This is a giant leap forward in making our Search Engine experience more relevant and believable.  The same feature will also appear on searches made from within Facebook.

WEB SUCCESS WEEKLY NEWS FROM JENNIE ARMATO

 I hope your week has taken off with a terrific start. I find that setting intentions for the week ahead that will achieve steps to your greater success helps to keep your productive time committed to outcomes that give you and your clients a greater level of success.

For me, this past weekend was all about relaxing, disconnecting, reflecting and rebuilding. It’s winter here in Melbourne (and it was damn cold on Saturday). I spent the day in my PJs, snuggled up on the lounge watching a few movies, reading a few good books and napping on and off. Oh, enjoyed some yummy toasties and teas as well.

All in all the day was very therapeutic and I highly recommend you schedule one for yourself  SOON!

One of the books I’m reading this week is “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. It’s an interesting perspective on self values and work values and how often, when they are out of alignment, so too is our ability to connect and complete tasks that help fulfill our greater goals. One of the exercises she encourages you to do is start each day with [what she calls] “Morning Pages” – ramblings if you like.

She encourages you to write out whatever is on your mind at the start of the day – good, bad, positive, negative, repetitive, meaningless, meaningful, inspiring or whatever – it doesnt matter. Her point is, write out whatever is on your mind … to clear your head of the random and often rambling thoughts that could be blocking your flow and progress in your creative (business) endeavours. I started today with my “Morning Pages” and it was indeed interesting.

Towards the end of the 3 recommended pages, it was interesting to see how my natural thought processes led me towards a focused plan for the day and the week. That is not unusual for many of us to do but what I found interesting this time was that it ‘felt’ so much more powerful than a normal ‘To Do’ list – in that it flowed out naturally from thoughts that led me to it and I have launched the week with a strong sense of vigour and idealism and also inspiration. Now again not unusual for many of us but it feels diff erent, I FEEL DIFFERENT!

It will be interesting to see how this evolves, I wanted to share it with you though in case it triggers an idea for you too. You see, those successful outcomes you’re pursuing are built over a series of progressive forward-moving steps and at every point in that journey, there is an equal and opposite force for moving backwards.

Your desire to move forward must be stronger than your desire to recede, otherwise, it is inevitable that you will indeed recede … and hey, maybe even QUIT your business … or worse still, stay in it in an uninspired, un-joyful way.

Only you can set the intensity of your desire to keep moving forward. For me, the “Morning Pages” could become part of my personal power-base that over rides every temptation to quit. It’s true, no matter where you are in your journey, failure is ever and omni-present.

It’ how we embrace it, energize it and recalibrate using it that we can keep moving forward. Even if your current business is not the business you remain in over time, if you give in to the temptation to quit or recede, you have failed – in other words, it’s only when you give up and decide to fail that you actually do indeed fail.

LAW OF SUCCESS COURSE BY NAPOLEON HILL – PARTNER WITH ME

Recently I had the honor and distinction to deliver a keynote address at the Napoleon Hill International Convention – in Kuching, Malaysia – on the island of Borneo.  The setting was exquisite and the experience of speaking at such an event has been a highlight in my career as a public speaker.   And to add to that, I was privileged to deliver two sessions with Dr Napoleon Hill’s grandson – Dr JB Hill.

To be in the presence of a man whose family and grandfather in particular have given so much to so many people around the world was another privilege I will cherish for life. And infact, I am compiling a small memoir for future generations in my family – it’s a legacy item, one to live and one to leave. I was invited to participate because the organizers have seen the work, my program and the results in peoples lives from me sharing the teachings of Hill – in particular the Law of Success Course.

It was only ever my intention to provide an opportunity for your greatness to emerge and explode – I never saw how much impact what I do in my business could do for so many others outside of my client family. But I was recognized and rewarded for my commitment to helping people through his work. I am sharing this with you to help you understand more the value of what you do in your business. When your intentions are right, the opportunities are boundless.

Several years ago I dedicated my life to teaching Hill’s work - as an expression of gratitude for the help I had received from his work. That I can now build a living legacy and leave one too, I believe is something many people, including you desire to achieve. So I challenge you to think about and answer this … What would be a privilege and an honor for you to achieve through your business?  What could you create or experience that would be a story worth telling one or two generations onwards from now. It’s kind of like the exercise of writing your eulogy – what do you want people to say about you when you’re gone? Have a go at defining what that may be.

It’s in having Chief Aims like this that you can create the legacy you want to live and leave. The result may not be what you thought it would be (I did not have in my plan to speak at the Convention), I had the plan to help as many people as I could with Hill’s work.

The Convention organizers gave me a platform to accelerate that aim and that experience is so unique, so powerful and for me and my work, so profound, it is part of the story of Jennie that I get to tell AND leave for others who find meaning in it.

With that in mind, it is another distinctive moment in my work to invite you to join me in the next course on Napoleon Hill’s Law of Success. It starts on Tuesday 3 August and runs for 44 weeks.
