Geeksongs (Aardvark'd Motion Picture Soundtrack)

"Geeksongs" is the soundtrack to the film "Aardvark'd: 12Weeks With Geeks," a quirky look at the making of software from the perspective of four young interns thrust into the hustle of New York City.

Most of the songs are written to give a thoughtful edge to a subject matter many would not consider serenading - computer programmers. It accomplishes its eccentric goal admiringly with simple songs, which help give more dimensions to a beautiful film.

Little known singer/song writer, Nonso Ugbode manages to accomplish this only with guitar and an often cleverly used voice. Somewhere in between smiling and actually feeling touched, you'll most likely want another listen on songs like the cleverly busy "Vibe," and the simple "Binary Code (Makes Sense Wherever I Go" and the lingeringly haunting "Digital Cowboy." This is a well thought out album and testament to the spirit of independent production on which the American music industry was built on.

I strictly recommend both, the movie and the music!

Photosynth

Using photos of oft-snapped subjects (like Notre Dame) scraped from around the Web, Photosynth (based on Seadragon technology) creates breathtaking multidimensional spaces with zoom and navigation features that outstrip all expectation.

The video is from march 2007 but i've seen it for the first time these days. What should i say? Very, very impressive.

Private Accessor class ignores generic constraint

These days, i came across a problem with Team System Unit Testing. I found that the automatically created accessor class ignores generic constraints - at least in the following case:

Assume you have the following class:

If you want to test MyMethod, you can create a test project with the following test method:

Running the test will fail with the error mentioned in the comment of the snippet above. The problem is the accessor class created by Visual Studio. If you go into it, you will come up to the following code:

Spam / Non Spam Ratio - Update

Vor einem halben Jahr habe ich mir mal das Verhältnis von Spam Mails zu erwünschten Mails innerhalb eines Monats angesehen. Am 01.06.2007 sah das Ergebnis so aus:

erwünschte Mails:	381
unerwünschte Mails (Spam):	11590

Am 01.12.2007, gerade mal ein halbes Jahr später, sieht das Ergebnis so aus:

erwünschte Mails:	268
unerwünschte Mails (Spam):	82561

Erschreckend!

Hatte ich vor einem halben Jahr noch mit etwa 30 Spam Mails pro erwünschter Mail zu kämpfen, so sind es heute schon 308, d.h. gut 10 mal mehr. Wenn das so weitergeht, dann werde ich bei Renteneintritt wohl mit ca. 300 Nonillionen Spam Mails pro erwünschter Mail zu kämpfen haben.

Wer sich das besser als Zahl vorstellen kann:

300.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000

Wollen wir mal hoffen, dass sich bis dahin noch was tut .

That's what Microsoft states about Volta:

JK hat 8 Jahre lang jeden Tag ein Foto von sich selbst gemacht und diese immerhin knapp 3000 Fotos zu einem gut 100 Sekunden langen Filmchen zusammengebaut. Gegen Ende wird es ziemlich wild - würde ich sagen.

Thanks to Georg who provided me an invitation, i was able to digg a bit into Joost. At the core, Joost is very similar to Babelgum. It provides some additional Features like a widget gallery where - as far as i've seen - you can provide your own widgets and there is also a chat application integrated so can chat with your friends right out of the Joost client. They've organized their Content into several Genres. At the time of writing, they have the following:

Cartoons & Animation
Comedy
Documentary
Entertainment
Lifestyle
Music
Music Entertainment
Sports & Games

The performance of Joost seems to be slightly better than Babelgum but that might be affected by the network performance on my site that varies over daytime. Another thing that does not vary over daytime is the user interface. My favorite is definitely the Babelgum UI. It's more intuitive, much nicer than the Joost UI and more fun to use.

From a content perspective, the point goes to Babelgum but this is a personal choice so everyone has to decide that for themselves.

The biggest disadvantage of Joost - at least in my environment - is the need to shoot some holes into the firewall just to get Joost running. For a fun product like Internet TV, this is a No-Go for me.

These days, i checked out Babelgum, a free on-demand TV which is currently in Beta. As soon as you've installed the Babelgum client, you can instantly begin to watch fullscreen TV. I've tried it out on the second screen (1280x1024) of my Notebook and it looks pretty good. The client application has a nice design and is easy to use. I found plenty of content across a variety of topics. To get their users started, they've organised content into nine thematic channels:

What i found remarkable is that there are a lot of contributions with a length between 10 to 25 minutes. Very well for a quick relaxing break during a hard day.

Web 2.0 und "User generated Content" sind in aller Munde und auch hier sind die USA natürlich einmal mehr der Vorreiter. Allerdings scheinen sich dort schon die ersten negativen Folgen des allzu sorglosen Umganges mit Plattformen wie MySpace, Friendster, Xanga bzw. dem Netz als solchem abzuzeichnen.

Einer US- Studie zufolge haben 61 Prozent der 13- bis 17-Jährigen ein Profil auf Plattformen wie den oben genannten. Die Hälfte davon hat zudem persönliche Fotos online gestellt und 20 Prozent der Teens halten das unter Sicherheitsaspekten für unbedenklich. 37 Prozent gaben an, dass sie "überhaupt nicht" oder "nicht sehr" besorgt darüber seien, dass jemand ihre veröffentlichten Daten in missbräuchlicher Weise verwenden könnte.

Ob dieser Sorglosigkeit ist man auf anderer Seite umso besorgter und entschlossen, dieser Entwicklung entgegenzuwirken. So haben sich das National Center for missing and exploited Chidren (NCMEC), das US- Justizministerium und die private Non-Profit Organisation Ad Council zusammengeschlossen, um die Kampagne "Think Before You Post" neu aufzulegen. Die folgenden beiden Videos sind Teil dieser Kampagne.

Das erste zeigt, wie ich finde, auf eindrucksvolle Weise allen Sorglosen und Unbedachten, wie das Internet halt nun mal funktioniert.

Mannomann, so langsam nähert sich die Telefon- Spamrate der Mail- Spamrate. Ich bin echt sooooo knapp davor, der Telefonanlage beizubringen, dass sie alles was anonym reinkommt einfach in den Harz kicken soll. Mann, bin ich geladen.

Windows Installer fails on Vista with error code 2869

The day before yesterday was my personal 2869 nightmare day. My 2869 occured during the uninstall of Guidance Automatic Extensions CTP June 2006. I have tried all that "msiexec /blablabla wahwahwah.msi" stuff with/without UAC disabled, from an admin-command-shell and from a batchfile. Everything without success. Finally i was able to uninstall my package by following the procedure that Greg Duncan describes in his blog (although it's about another error). Give it a try.

Demofuse

A few days ago, i received an invitation for Demofuse. Demofuse is a tool to author annotated website tours right in your browser. All you need to get started ist to include two lines of code into every page you want to have Demofuse-enabled. Then, you have to go to the Demofuse website and create a new tour. This will open your website with a nice little control panel on the bottom containing everything you need to create the show.

The concept of Demofuse is slide based. You can create a number of slides, each showing a certain web page. To guide your audience and to explain what's going on, you have a toolbox with the following tools in place:

A floating window contains explaining text about the current page. It also contains navigation elements to give the user control over the show.
Highlights are used to mark an area of the screen. You can use regular highlighting in a color of your choice or you can use inverse highlighting. The latter dims your screen except of the area of interest.
Arrows can be used to point to a certain elemnt on teh page. You can determine the arrow direction (left or right) an wether the arrow should be animated or not. Unfortunately i haven't found a way to select the arrows color.
To visualize mouse clicks, Demofuse offers the "Curso Click" tool. It marks the place where the user have to click in real live with a red dot.

Working with Demofuse smells a little bit like doing a series of screenshots but in real, Demofuse is using the life website and injects script code to create the web tour experience.

When you're done, you can save you tour and Demofuse will provide you script snippets and a nice button that can be used to integrate the tour in your site. You have the choice between code that starts the tour using a link and code that start the tour using script. The latter doesn't need to refresh the page which is the best choice whenever the user has already fille a form or something like that. Just click on the "Sample Tour" button to see a demo tour.

The Surface Thing

Nachdem Microsoft mit seinem Surface Computer in den letzten Tagen ja so richtig Furore gemacht hat, hier nochmal die Zusammenfassung von ein paar Quellen, die uneingeschränkt geeignet sind, um sich von der absoluten coolness dieses Gerätes zu überzeugen.

First of all das Video, das wohl als erstes seine Kreise zog. In gut 4 Minuten gibt es einen Überblick über die Features und einen kleinen Einblick in die Technik.

Auf Microsofts Surface- Homepage gibt es ein paar Videos mit je 1-2 Minuten Länge, die hauptsächlich den Einsatz im Consumer Bereich zeigen. Das Gerät soll ab Ende des Jahres zunächst für "Commercial Partners" verfügbar sein. Ein paar Anwendungen dieser Partner (z.B. T-Mobile oder Sheraton) werden in den Videos kur gezeigt.

Last but not least gibt es bei on10.net ein knapp 20-minütiges Video, das nach einer kurzen Einführung in die grundlegenden Features die Anwendungen der ersten "Commercial Partners" der Reihe nach kurz vorstellt. Ein sehr sachliches Video ohne Trara und Marketing- Fanfaren.

Ich habe mir mal die Mühe gemacht und über die letzten 30 Tage alle ankommenden Spam Mails aufzubewahren. Mich hat mal das Verhältnis von erwünschten zu unerwünschten Mails interessiert. Here are the results of the spamalytics jury:

unerwünschte Mails (Spam):	11590

Das heißt im Klartext, dass auf eine gute Mail 30 Spam Mails kommen. Würde mich interessieren ob ich da im Durchschnitt liege oder ob ich ein besonder gequälter respektive vom Glück verwöhnter Mail Benutzer bin.

So, und nu wech mit dem Zeug.

Einladungstag

Wow, heute ist wohl Einladungstag. Kurz nacheinander haben sie mich endlich bei reinvigorate und Popfly zum Testen reingelassen. Wurde ja auch Zeit.

Reinvigorate liefert Web- Statistike a la Google Analytics, hat aber im Vergleich ein deutlich gefälligeres User Interface. Durch die kürzlich erfolgte Renovierung des Analytics UI konnte Google den Abstand allerdings deutlich verringern.

Das für mich größte Plus für reinvigorate ist die Echtzeit Verarbeitung der Daten. Jeder Besucher taucht umgehend in den Statistiken auf und auch die Navigationspfade der einzelnen Besucher lassen sich nachvollziehen.

Popfly ist Microsofts Antwort auf Yahoos Pipes und kommt mit einer mega-stylishen Ajax Oberfläche daher. Auf einem Design Surface, das im Hintergrund ein Preview der gerade bearbeiteten Applikation zeigt, operiert man mit animierten Boxen, die verschiedene Dienste darstellen. Zur Verfügung stehen derzeit ca. 140 Dienste, teils sind dies externe wie Flickr, Digg oder Twitter, teils interne wie z.B. Konvertierungen, Berechungen oder Komponenten zur Darstellung von Daten im User Interface. Es macht auf jeden Fall Spass ein wenig in Popfly herumzuklicken. Teilweise wird die Applikation etwas zäh. Es stellt sich dann die Frage, ob beim Zusammenbauen der Applikation diese unbedingt schon im Hintergrund angezeigt werden muss oder ob der ganze Schnickschnack wirklich auf dem Design Surface herumwabbern und rein- und raus-sliden muss. Wie gesagt, Spaß machts allemal.

It's Müsli Time

Das Müsli ist angekommen und schmeckt gar nicht so schlecht. Ich habe zugegebenermaßen etwas mit den Zutaten experimentiert und deshalb ist noch Platz für ein wenig Tuning. Als Fazit würde ich sagen: Die Idee ist gut, die Umsetzung auch, einzig der Preis erscheint mir, nicht zuletzt wegen den Versandkosten, für ein Everyday-Müsli etwas zu hoch. Preiswerter kommt man weg wenn man bei den Zutaten knausert, allerdings kann man ein Haferflocken-only Müsli auch beim Discounter nebenan kaufen. Für das besondere Frühstück werde ich den Müsli- Jungs aber treu bleiben.

Richtig gut geeignet ist so ne schicke Dose Müsli mit Custom-Etikett - die bei mir übrigens völlig intakt ankam - zum Verschenken. Prima würde ich es finden, wenn auf dem Etikett noch etwas Platz für eine Message des Bestellers wäre. Das ist doch bestimmt ohne großen Aufwand (spich Kosten) machbar, oder?

Bestandsaufnahme der deutschen Web 2.0 Szene

Gregor Hochmuth malt in seinem Artikel ein nicht sonderlich positives Bild der deutschen Web 2.0 Szene. Zu jedem deutschen Angebot, so der Artikel, gibt es mindestens ein, meist US - amerikanisches Angebot, das den hiesigen CopyCats schamlos als Vorlage diente. Naja, man mag sagen was man will. Im Falle von MyMuesli.com haben wir im Vergleich zu MyGranola.com die Nase jedenfalls vorne. :-)

Microsoft Codename "Astoria"

At Mix 07, Microsoft announced another interesting project.

The goal of Microsoft Codename Astoria is to enable applications to expose data as a data service that can be consumed by web clients within a corporate network and across the internet. The data service is reachable over HTTP, and URIs are used to identify the various pieces of information available through the service. Interactions with the data service happens in terms of HTTP verbs such as GET, POST, PUT and DELETE, and the data exchanged in those interactions is represented in simple formats such as XML and JSON.

Finally, they decided to include Expression Web and Expression Blend within the MSDN Premium subscription. Jeremy from Digital Blasphemy brought up the question of how to iterate only over certain objects in a list. In his example, he has a list filled with Cats and Dogs where both are inherited from the base class Animal. What he wanted to do is to use a foreach statement to iterate over the Dogs only without any kind of filtering inside the foreach loop. I pointed out that this is easy to achieve using an anonymous delegate as the predicate in the FindAll method of the List type. The code looks like that:

Random Beeps while Google Desktop is running

On my Dell Inspiron 9300 notebook, the system beeper is beeping randomly since the installation of google desktop. I figured out, that this occurs as soon as pdftotext.exe and acrobat.exe are running simultaneously while acrobat.exe continually tries to access the non-existing files capt2view.cmd and special.cmd anywhere deep in my "Local Settings" folder. Next, i will try to find why Acrobat is doing so. For now, i can keep the kids sleeping by checking that acrobat.exe is not running whenever i leave my computer (which means that a minute later, google desktop wakes up and uses pdftotext.exe to index pdf files).
