The Coach Chow Era Begins

The Star Advertiser reports that Norm Chow is in final negotiations to be UH's next football coach. The story is moving rapidly, so it may be official by the time you read this.

The University of Hawaii is reportedly prepared to pay Norm Chow $600,000-$800,000 per year for up to five years to become its new head football coach, the Star-Advertiser has been told.

Chow has been chosen to succeed Greg McMackin, whose salary was $1.15 million per season and negotiations on a contract are underway today. UH officials authorized athletic director Jim Donovan to begin negotiations Monday night.

A person familiar with negotiations but not authorized to speak for either party said "the salary for (Chow) won't be the hold up. Talks are more about what the assistant (coaches) will get. He's focused on trying to put together a staff."

The Star Advertiser has coverage of yesterday's press conference, if you have a subscription. Rich Miano talks about what he'll do as interim coach.

"With recruiting, every single scholarship is a commodity," Miano said.

"We have to review and make sure (each recruit is) what we need as we move forward."

Miano said a priority will be to recruit locally. He said the UH coaches will "re-visit" every Hawaii high school football team.

"We have to make sure we don't get out-recruited in our own backyard," Miano said.

And this seems like an article that might be edited or deleted in the near future, but David Graves gives a very honest reaction and insight into the whole situation.

McMackin Retires

The Coach Mack era is over.

University of Hawaii coach Greg McMackin retired today, ending a four-year career at the helm of the Warriors football program.

McMackin had one season left on a five-year deal worth $1.1 million annually. As part of the agreement, McMackin accepted a buyout for $600,000. The university will begin a national search for McMackin's replacement immediately. UH assistant coach Rich Miano will serve as interim head coach.

Thank you, Coach. It'll be interesting to see who replaces him, and who is retained. I would hate to see Rolo go, but this could mean a complete overhaul to the identity of the Warriors.

BYU 41, Hawaii 20

It was a tough season with a lot of injuries, and with yesterday's loss to BYU there will be no Hawaii Bowl for UH. It was a frustrating year, but there's a lot of talent coming back next year. Trailing 13-10 at the half, the Cougars (9-3) scored 34 unanswered points, including 28 in the third quarter, to put the game out of reach. The Warriors only managed 89 yards of total offense in the second half.

With the loss, the Warriors (6-7) failed to reach the seven wins necessary to qualify for the hometown Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl. UH finished the season with a losing record for the second time in three seasons and for just the third time in the past 11 years.

WiTP: Pilares & Bess, Updated schedule results

Congrats to our Warriors! One more game!
From Thanksgiving Day, the Dolphin's Davone Bess had an awesome one handed catch in their loss to Cowboys.

Kealoha Pilares followed up last week's TD kickoff return with another long one, this time 76 yards to help the Panthers keep the Colts winless.

And here's my weekly updated opponent's schedules. Some teams have finished up their seasons, while others have their last one left.

Do you need to say anything else? C'mon fans, this has been an up and down year, but we all LOVE our team and our Warriors. And we all LOVE to hate BYU. Show up at Aloha Stadium this Saturday to cheer on our team to beat the Cougars as well as to say good bye to our Seniors. (This includes the UH students!!! where are you!?!?)

Hawaii 35, Tulane 23

Freshman David Graves making his first career start, finished 21-of-38 for 260 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 57 yards and another score. He gave way to Shane Austin at the end of the third quarter and the senior completed 9-of-10 passes for 98 yards and led the Warriors to the game-sealing touchdown drive.

Freshman wide receiver Trevor Davis was the recipient of both of Graves' touchdown passes while running back Joey Iosefa rushed for 59 yards and two scores.

Is there a QB controversy as the Warriors head to a season finale showdown vs BYU? Gotta win this one to make the Hawaii Bowl.

WiTP: Pilares' 1st NFL TD, Bess' TD, schedule update

Congratulations to Kealoha Pilares' first NFL touchdown of the year, a 101 yard kickoff return in their game versus the Detroit Lions yesterday.

Also, congrats go out to Davone Bess and his TD as he helps his Dolphins win three in a row, this time over the reeling Buffalo Bills.

Fresno State 24, Hawaii 21

Sophomore David Graves nearly rallied the Warriors (5-6, 3-4 WAC) to victory, completing 13-of-27 for 199 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another score. Graves entered the game with Hawai'i trailing 17-0 early in the second quarter.

After much debate this week as to who would replace injured starter Bryant Moniz at quarterback, senior Shane Austin got the nod. In his second career start, Austin played the entire first quarter, completing 6-of-13 for 45 yards, before giving way to Graves.

Robert Turbin's 1-yard plulnge with 14 seconds left proved the game-winner as the Aggies (3-5, 1-2 WAC) overcame a 21-point second-half deficit. Turbin's score capped a 12-play, 59-yard drive that ate up the majority of the final five minutes.

Week 8's Opponent's Results

Here's this past weekend's results for the Warriors opponents. Lots of teams with byes, and a big game between Nevada and Fresno that might determine the WAC champion.

(I also need to apologize too for not upholding the awesomeness of this blog. Coupled with my recording PC out of commission, this fall has been an incredibly time consuming one outside of UH football, and I am sorry for not being able to keep this blog up to date as it once was. Hopefully this is just a temporary thing and both Tombo and I can return it to glory once again).

Hawaii 45, New Mexico State 34

UH never trailed, scoring the first two touchdowns of the game and cruising to its 10th straight Homecoming win and 12th in the last 13 seasons. Bryant Moniz passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more to get UH back on the winning track after a disappointing road loss at San Jose State the week prior.
