Hootsuite vs Cotweet

As social media business applications become more mainstream, comparisons are inevitable. Take this one from Rafe Needleman about hootsuite and cotweet, for instance. Both Hootsuite and Cotweet are twittering solutions for the enterprise. They share many common characteristics and differ in a few important ones. Needleman’s review covers it all. But where do they stand in terms of buzz? How much are they searched, discussed and, maybe because of it, used? Google Trends is revealing here:

The search volume for hootsuite is bigger and this is to be expected as it is longer in the market. What makes a difference is the growth rate. Cotweet seems to level after a couple of months. For this comparison to be fair we need to take into consideration that cotweet just opened to the public. It was in private beta for some time now.

What is also intresting is that cotweet has a lot of media references (because of its recent funding) which seem disproportionate to the search volume. A media darling? We’ll see…

Zoho Creator webifies your MS Access apps

The Zoho Team has been tireless lately: after announcing the SharePoint Integration and the new Zoho Projects 2.0 with its social features, now they added a piece of really important and useful functionality to Zoho Creator: the ability to import Microsoft Access databases and application. This means that with very little effort all those mini apps that are so fond to many, can be transformed to web applications with no coding. Check the video for more.

Password recovery via SMS for Gmail

That’s a good one:

To turn this on for your account, just sign in, select ‘Change Password Recovery Options,’ enter your cell phone number and click ‘Save.’

Next time you forget your password, enter your username on the password-assistance page, and Google will text you a recovery code. No need to check another email account or even leave the page.

Zoho Projects 2.0 : Project Management with Social twist

We have reviewed Zoho Projects and we liked it. Now, Zoho Projects 2.0 wants to hooks us on, like twitter or Facebook keep us hooked. Why? The new version is no more a traditional PM software. It has incorporated the logic of twitter of the short status updates. A Yammer for PM inside Zoho Projects.

Gmail labels supercharged

Labels have been a convenient way to organize your mails. Now, the Gmail team has moved them to a more prominent position, just below the mailboxes (see picture). The most popular show on the top of the list and the rest can be hidden/shown at will. The most interesting change is the drag and drop feature: you can drag a message to the label and the message is the message is assigned to that label. It works the other way round: drag a label to a number of messages to classify them accordingly.

With all these, who needs a desktop mailer?

Konolive goes web

Konolive, the Israeli startup that makes the homonymous Adobe Air task management software, has announced a web version created on the Yahoo Application Platform. The functionality is simple but introduces an interesting concept which might give it some extra traction: templates. Templates are easy predefined task lists for common tasks. Provided that the application opens to people’s contribution, templates might pour in and people with them. Yosi Dan, Konolive CEO, confirmed in an email exchange that this is exactly what they plan to do.

Judging from the few templates already available, Konolive 2Go addresses the US consumer market first.

Google Spreadsheets add ‘Solve’ feature

Solving optimzation problems was a ‘favorite’ passtime of my student days. And Microsoft Excel was the tool. Looks like students -and the rest of us- will have an extra tool from now on. Google Spreadsheets have added a feature that does exactly this: Solving optimization problems. Cool!

Zoho Office for Microsoft SharePoint

It sounds like heresy but it is true: Zoho Office, the web based equivalent of Microsoft Office, can be integrated into Microsoft Sharepoint Enterprise installations. The ‘pairing’ takes advantage of the Sharepoint underlying user permissions to allow multiple users to collaborate of documents.
