Now this plugin has been around the block for quite some time now and I'm not sure why I haven't recommended it earlier but as they say: Better late than never.

Given my newfound love for it I'm going to showcase a couple of badass banks and show you why it's still a heavy hitter, capable of modern premium sounds although it's completely free to use without any restrictions.

Synth1 was created by Ichiro Toda. It's modelled after the Clavia Nord Lead 2 Red Synthesizer. It's a super light-weight plugin and even the crappiest of computers will be able to run several instances at once without crashing due to CPU and RAM limitations.

MiniMouge VST

The Minimogue is a lead, FX and bass synth just like the real Minimoog. It is programmed to be as expressive as possible. This is a synth for the players. Modulation wheel takes a big part in the solo sounds. Also try to play long legato lines to hear the full sweep with sounds like Big drift. It is cpu friendly. CPU load is 1% on a 1,5 centrino machine. On my old P4 1,7 machine CPU load is 3 %.

The first 3 rows of knobs represent the original Minimoog. The only additions here is a button for retrig and legato. The original Minimoog is always set to legato. Also there are sliders for fine tuning that is not present on the Minimoog, but these works just like the pitch knob, only that it is more sensitive. Its just there to help you, because the Minimoog sounds best when it is almost in tune, but not 100%. Tuning plays a big part in the Minimoog sound. Also release in the envelope generators is added. The upper section is where you create sounds.

The last row of knobs represent new features that we have added that is not present on the original Minimoog. These features are midi control, oscillator sync, LFO, autopan, overdrive, chorus and a delay section that you can sync to host BPM. The LFO has 3 functions. At low level settings it is intended to simulate the small tuning and instabilities in an original Minimoog. At high level settings it simalates the tweaking of a knob so that you can focus on the playing. The third function is to give oscillatorsync pitch variations to work with. It also syncs to host BPM.

Many of you have probably heard of Aphex Twin before, especially his über-cool track titled, Windowlicker. (quite the jam, check it out) I always wondered how he managed to tweak and bend it like a madman.. no need to wonder anymore though.

Let me introduce, Glitch 1.3.05 - A great tool for all you glitchers, dubsteppers and breakerheads out there.

A short introduction from the creator:
Glitch features a pattern-based effects sequencer that takes the incoming audio, breaks it down into user-defined slices, and then applies different effects to each slice. The sounds it generates range from quite subtle to extremely bizarre, depending on how much you tweak the controls. Effects can either be programmed by hand to create specific desired patterns; chosen pseudo-randomly based on each effect’s probability level, with a user-defined seed value that optionally allows the same sequence of “random” effects to be chosen each time; or combined into a mixture of both methods to suite your own tastes.

Blockfish - Free VST Compressor
The BLOCKFISH compressor is a dynamics compressor capable of a compact and dense sound (hence the name). But unlike a lot of digital compressors, it does not 'squash' your signal that much.
The focus was to keep your music alive and let it breathe. It comes with a typical 'vca' circuit providing modern compression - best for drums and guitars - and a classical 'opto' unit that recreates the sound of old photo-electrical gain devices and has been optimised for vocal tracks. The basic parameters are easily set up but you have access to futher adjustments that can turn BLOCKFISH into a real 'killer' device.

Floorfish - Free VST Expander / noise gate
FLOORFISH is a classical gate/expander unit that was originally designed to make acoustic drum recording much cleaner. Especially seperately miked snares and toms often unveil a large amount of 'bleeding noise' if you compress them. The FLOORFISH can help to lower this noise floor. Unlike a typical 'noise gate', the signal is not cut off completely if you do not want it to.

Spitfish - Free VST De-esser.
SPITFISH serves as an easy-to-use de-esser. If you ever had problems with loud sibilants and s-like vocals, this device can help to make those nasty sounds much smoother. You can also apply it to other signals that might need some evening out within the upper frequency range, e.g. cymbals and crashes.
The whole character has been tuned to 'nice' and 'gentle'. It should be almost impossible to make your recordings sound unnatural within the normal operational range.

Free ePiano VST Plugin

I’ve used LoungeLizard for some time now and it’s great, but it’s not a free plugin that I can offer my visitors.
The only free VST plugin that comes close to LL is this one, I did not expect much at all because lets face it, it looks über-cheap.. Boy was I wrong! (as always it seems)

It sounds really good and professional.
All you FL music makers will enjoy this one a lot since it sounds so much better than FL Keys, has more features and presets to tweak around with.

It might have a goofy name but it kicks butt!

padawan is a hybrid synthesizer intended for pad and ambient sound creation.
Layer it with some thick pads, add some filters and you'll be surprised of what it can do for your ambient surroundings. it's a must have!

Don't be fooled by it's cheapo effects, just turn them off and use your own and you'll have a powerful tool in your VST library.

What i liked about this free VST drum plugin was that it's able to play 16 and 24 bit sounds and that it comes in two versions, one light-weight (1 Mb).dll version and another 25 Mb msi file. The reason why it's bigger is simply because you get a drum sound library with it. (250 drumsamples!) This will come in handy if you use fruityloops for example, since FL's standard sound library pretty much sucks so it's a perfect and free way to step your game up a little. If you're planning to use your own sounds i'd suggest to download the lighter version.

This VST plugin is a keeper!
I was not expecting all that much to be honest, But it had some really nice presets!
I would really recommend this one to musicians who are into house music (raw pianos)
r&b, soul etc. This is a free VST plugin that really is worth paying for, But luckily for us it's totally free.

Turntablist PRO VST
This VST Plugin is probably not the best out there when it comes to making fake scratch effects.
I truly hope it's not the best, But it's free atleast. (we like it like that)
Don't get me wrong here, you can create some nice slide effects and pitch tweaks with it but that's about it though.
