Do you use Gmail or Google Apps for email? Gmail remains the favorite web-based email service for many of us in spite of the competition from other email services. Also, as more and more businesses use Google apps, the dominance of Gmail has grown byleaps and bounds. That’s actually why we take Google services really seriously on VikiTech. Particularly, Gmail Add-ons and other tools are really important to make your work and life easier, fun and more productive.

Gmail Labs contain some awesome tools that are still under experimentation. If they get accepted by enough Gmail users, they’ll eventually get added to Gmail. However before they get accepted, you can get ahead of others and try out these experimental features in Gmail Labs.

10+ Gmail Labs Add-Ons

Here, we have selected more than 10 Gmail Labs add-ons that we find very useful. Note the ones that appeal to you and head over to your Gmail settings to enable them. We shall also discuss how to do that in this post.

How to Enable Gmail Labs Features

Before we see the best Gmail Lab features, let’s look at how to locate Gmail labs option in your account and enable the features you want. You can enable all the features you want at once and save changes. First, open your Gmail account. Click on the gear icon above Gmail Inbox and select “Settings” from the dropdown.

On the settings page, click on “Labs” at the right hand side of the tabs displayed.

Select “Enable” for all the features you’d like to enable. Then move to the bottom of the page and select “Save”.

Your Gmail account will immediately refresh, and the changes would have been added. Now let’s see which are the most interesting one’s among all the Gmail Labs features.

1. Undo Send

This feature is extremely useful for people who send a lot of emails daily. Sometimes, you send an email in a rush and immediately remember more information or notice an error in the sent message. With this add-on, you can instantly stop the message within a few seconds of sending the message.

2. Preview Pane

Are you a really busy person that receives a lot of emails. This add-on lets you read messages right next to the list of messages in your inbox. A preview pane gets added to your inbox, and you can decide whether you want a horizontal preview pane or a vertical one.

This way you can quickly skim through the messages in your inbox first thing in the morning or last thing at night. You can also reply messages in the preview pane.

3. Canned Responses

If you are self-employed or working in customer service, this is particularly useful for you. “Canned responses” lets you save common messages in your inbox. You get quick and easy access to these messages when you need them. Just click on a button, insert your canned response, edit your message and hit send. That way, you can save a lot of time.

To save a “canned response” after enabling this feature, just go to “Compose New”, enter your message and click on “canned responses” and save. Here’s a detailed overview of Canned Responses feature in Gmail and How to set them up.

4. Inserting images

Do you itch to add pictures to your emails. Here’s a Gmail Lab add-on that takes care of that for you. It adds a new icon for inserting pictures to your Gmail.

5. Quote Selected Text

This is also really useful if you are in customer service or you work where you respond to a lot of enquiries regularly. Quote Selected Text add-on lets you highlight a text and then quote only the highlighted text in your reply.

This way, you can remove fluffs easily and answer only a particular question in your reply.

6. Sender Time Zone

Do you interact with people across different time zones by email? This tool helps you become more courteous and organized. It shows the Time Zone and current time of the senders of emails in your inbox. With this add-on enabled, you will know when to expect replies to your emails and whether you client or team mate is actually working late.

7. Message Sneak Peek

This is also really useful for people who receive a lot of emails daily. It is an alternative to the Preview Pane feature mentioned above. You don’t have to open each message before knowing what is in there. Simply right-click on each message to get an idea of what the message is.

8. Pictures in chat

Want to make your Gmail chat more interesting. Start showing pictures and not just the names. This feature does that for you once it is enabled.

9. Extra Emoji

This feature helps you add more picture characters or emoticons to your messages. Once enable, the characters will appear above your new messages.

10. Unread Message Icon

Want to know how many unread messages you have at a glance? Enable Unread Message Icon to display the number of unread messages at the top of your inbox all the time.

Sign Up with Personal.com

At the top right hand side corner of the homepage, click on the orange button labeled “Register”.

On the following page, you will be required to enter your details as well as a password for this service. Ensure you enter correct details and then select “Sign Me Up” at the bottom of the form. Also make sure you agree to their terms and conditions by checking the relevant box.

Check your email for the confirmation code and enter it on the next page as required. Then click on the orange button labeled “Confirm”.

On the next page, you can log in with the details you registered with and start using Personal.

How to Use Personal

When you login, you will be greeted by a welcome box on a blanketed page. You could click close labeled “X” at the top right hand corner of the box to exit to your vault or click “Next” at the bottom right hand side of the box to view some essential tips.

For a short review of how Personal works, quickly run through the 5 to 6 slides about the application by clicking “Next”. On the last slide, click on the silver button labeled “Gemware” to locate topics called Gems that you can edit and/or add to your vault.

See below how your personal vault will look until you add enough information. There are 3 ways to start using Personal, you can search through categories of Gems from the left hand pane, look for items alphabetically or search for them using the search box.

As your first Gem, you can add Addresses to your vault. You will be able to store shipping and billing addresses and so on, and then you can update them regularly.To add Addresses to your vault, click on the button labeled “Add Empty Gem” below Addresses.

A square box will appear at the top left hand side of your page under Vault. In the box, click on “Add Data”.

On the next page, you can enter a name for the Gem and add the information you’d like to keep in your vault.

Note that you can click the “+” button at the top of the page to open new pages for more addresses. When a page is complete, click save at the top or bottom right hand side of the page.

Bear in mind that you don’t necessarily have to fill up all the information on a page. Just enter the details that are important to you and move on to a new page or another Gem entirely.

How to Get Ideas on What to Store in Your Vault

If you would like to see how others are already using Personal.com,  check out community vaults. Go to your Gemware by clicking “Gemware” at the top left hand side of your page.

Select “Communities Gems Available”, and you will be taken to another page.

Click “View” in front of any of the Gems to see how different people are using Personal.com.

How to Grant and Request “Gems” from Others

At the top left hand side of your vault, you will see three bars labeled “Grant Gems”, “Request Gems” and “Publish Gems” respectively. You can select any of them when required.

For example, to grant  your wife or child access to a particular “Gem” in your vault, simply enter the name of the Gem and the email address of your wife or child. Then click on the orange button, labeled “Grant Access”

The same process goes for requesting access to another person’s Gem. However, the process for publishing a Gem differs. To publish a Gem to the community, click on the bar labeled “Publish Gems”.

A large box containing all your Gems will appear. You can sort your Gems into categories, and then select the Gem you want to publish before clicking Next. Here, I have just one Gem in my vault.

On the next page, enter the required information concerning the Gem you would like to publish and click “Next”

Next, you will be notified of successful publishing.

Is It Safe to Store Sensitive Data in the Vaults on Personal.com?

A lot of people seem to be really worried about the safety of very sensitive pieces information on Personal. It is actually advisable to start storing less sensitive information for a start, and later evaluate the service based on experience. Personal is still in beta, so start with those important pieces of information that are not too sensitive.

However, one app is actually leaning in the opposite direction. GPS Essentials scoffs at the simplicity and lack of features within Google Maps. Instead of simplifying the modern navigation system, GPS Essentials is an app dedicated to making it more complex and useful. By and large, it does that. Here are just a few of the functions built into GPS Essentials.

Things That GPS Essentials Does -

GPS Essentials comes packed with tools for travel and navigation. Rather than taking the “simplicity first” approach of Google Maps and the iOS navigation system, this app prefers to provide users with as many tools as possible. The result is not for beginners, but a boon to travel professionals.

However, these tools must come with a word of caution. Quite a few of them seem targeted at non-traditional navigation (e.g. travel by boat and plane). It’s great that GPS Essentials can help you fly a plane and all, but it is under no circumstances to be used as a substitution for proper navigation equipment.

We checked with a friend who flies planes for a living. He said that according to United States regulations, you are allowed to use other navigation tools (like GPS Essentials) so long as you also have FAA-approved equipment running as well. Again, if you’re flying a plane or sailing a boat, do not use GPS Essentials as a substitute for professional navigation gear.

With that fun little warning out of the way, here’s some of the cool stuff you can do with GPS Essentials.

The Main Screen

The major part of the app is a screen of customizable widgets that you can place anywhere on the screen. These widgets are navigation tools intended for quick glances during travel. If you’re using GPS Essentials while driving (not that we recommend doing this, keep your eyes on the road), the panel is pretty useful.

The list of widgets included is absurdly long. For the phone itself, there’s a meter for the battery level, temperature, and voltage. This is useful for making sure that the phone doesn’t die and leave you stranded without a GPS.

There’s plenty of detailed stuff about traveling as well. There are meters that show the rate of climb and descent, distance traveled, distance to destination or any custom position, estimated time until arrival, compass bearing, and average speed.

There’s a whole bunch of other widgets which feel clearly targeted toward sailors and pilots. Certain widgets display altitude relative to sea level or any custom elevation or the destination, longitude and latitude, UTM position, sun rise and sun set, moon rise and moon set, climb rate, and the absolute date and time.

Once you pick out the stuff that sounds interesting to you, it creates a panel full of information and numbers. If nothing else, it looks pretty neat and made us think of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Pictures and Places

GPS Essentials also comes with a camera, oddly enough. The app aspires to be more than just a simple navigation tool. It wants to connect photography and travel in a new and pretty unique way.

Think of GPS Essentials as an unsexy combination of Foursquare and Instagram. Included in the app is a camera tool. The camera includes an accelerometer and compass that both feel targeted towards planes. Again, this app feels very Flight Simulator.

Whenever you take a picture within GPS Essentials, it marks down the location where the photo was taken. Now whenever you view the photo, it comes with a link to Google Maps to display its site of origin.

The idea is pretty neat, especially when you throw in the robust sharing system. Whatever social media apps you have installed like Facebook, Peep, and Picasa can share pictures with friends. This feature won’t be of much use if you’re the type to never leave the house, but we could imagine it being really cool for tourists traveling to exotic locales.

Everything Else

GPS Essentials comes with a host of other features integrated into the navigation system. That’s really a plus in favor of this app – everything fits together. Actions done within one feature carry over flawlessly into the others. We didn’t encounter any issues getting the different services to play nicely together.

The compass feature displays a rather large compass pointing toward magnetic north with a miniaturized main panel of widgets beneath. The GPS only works when the phone is placed standing up, but it was remarkably accurate. Tracking angles are also included.

Map mode feels more like a traditional GPS. GPS Essentials streams down data from Google Maps to display you and everything nearby. The results are typically accurate and helpful. Even better, you can add waypoints to the map for navigation or marking important places.

To keep track of these important places, GPS Essentials lets you tag waypoints with short bits of text. For example, you could set a waypoint at your parents’ home and tag it as “free food.” The app help guide recommends tagging fishing spots by the type of fish which congregate there.

The Tracks system records information about your movements. It’s a little creepy, but if you’re OK with being recorded by satellites it can be interesting. Tracks records statistics like time spent traveling, top and average speed, distance traveled, and maximum and minimum altitude during the journey. We got an average speed of zero miles per hour, but that’s because we never left our chair. Finally, everything from Tracks is displayed graphically in Charts.

Final Thoughts

GPS Essentials is a bit of an app without a concrete purpose. It’s too complex for regular driving navigation (at least in America), but not complex enough to be a bona fide navigational instrument for sailing or flying. However, even with that caveat, serious travelers will probably get a good amount of use out of it.

Well, the important thing is that we’re back for another weekend of fun games for Android, iOS, and Flash. These games aren’t exactly Skyrim, but they are pretty fun and best of all, totally free. Anyone looking for a little entertainment this weekend probably can’t go wrong with these picks. Unless you have fun. In that case, we can’t help you. VikiTech has a strict fun-only policy that’s enforced ruthlessly. In blood. You don’t want to know what happened to the last editor to step out of line. Right. The games.

Mega Jump (Android)

Mega Jump is a game that is just begging to be compared to its more famous cousin, DoodleJump. However, much as we would like to draw that link, the truth is that Mega Jump is just different enough to stand on its own.

DoodleJump is a game of slowly jumping upward at a steady, uninterrupted pace (except for the jetpacks). Mega Jump is structured just slightly differently, but the changes are enough to imbue it with a totally unique sense of gameplay.

Where DoodleJump has you bouncing ever upward on platforms, Mega Jump tasks you with collecting as many coins as possible. Touching a coin propels you up into the air. Miss a coin and you fall to an untimely death. This small but critical difference changes the gameplay completely. Hitting one coin bounces you upward like in DoodleJump, but collecting multiple coins in a row propels you up the map at very high speeds.

The coins are also how the game keeps track of upgrades. Collect enough coins and you can buy life-saving power-ups. Of course, coins can also be purchased with real money if you’re not the patient type. Aside from the spectacularly terrible graphics (just look at the screen captures we took), Mega Jump is an interesting and original take on the classic DoodleJump formula.

The Sims FreePlay (iOS)

For The Sims FreePlay, we’re going to have to confess a bit of bias. You see, we’ve played The Sims before. It’s pretty cool. For a game about mundane activities like cooking and gardening, The Sims is one of the most oddly addictive franchises out there. We won’t pretend to understand why it’s so interesting, but it is.

Upon starting up the game, The Sims dumps you into a custom Sim creator. Just within the short amount of time we spent in the character creation mode, a dozen ideas occurred to us for future characters. The Sims allows for some hilarious and awesome combinations like a mime who thinks he’s Batman to any James Bond villain imaginable.

The customization is pretty well fleshed-out. Name, personality, skin tone, all of that can be changed. Every Sim also has a personality, which they are more than happy to act out for you. Some are boring (athletic) while others can be downright hilarious (villain, vigilante, and tycoon).

The character creator also comes with a bevy of costumes clearly inspired by diverse sources like Tron, Indiana Jones, and real-life Scotland. We decided on making the best possible approximation of a villainous version of VikiTech editor Shishir. The Sim really doesn’t look like him, but we tried.

Once you get out of the character creator, the tutorial starts. This is a nice addition for new players, but for old hands at The Sims like ourselves, it’s way too long. The tutorial does introduce you to the new addition to The Sims FreePlay- work time.

Similar to other free to play games like Farmville, any actions taken in The Sims FreePlay require real-world time. Some waiting periods are as short as thirty seconds, while others can be quite a bit longer. You can skip the waiting with small payments of real money.

The waiting system is a bit of a pain, to be honest. Other than that artificial addition, The Sims FreePlay feels very similar to the full PC game. You raise Sims and take charge of their sometimes hilariously chaotic lives. There’s a lot of content here, especially by iPad standards. As long as you don’t mind the waiting periods, The Sims FreePlay is a great (free) way to get your Sims fix on the road.

Mouse and Guns

Mouse and Guns is a game that’s a bit simpler than The Sims FreePlay. You play as an… armed mouse… who has to battle what appear to be robotic dogs. There’s also a floating chunk of cheese in the sky. Shoot that to raise the difficulty. Yeah, we don’t get it either.

The game is pretty well developed, though. Gameplay is fun in a mindless “blast the enemies” sort of way. A constant stream of upgrades, cash, and new enemies makes for an interesting time. There’s also a decent amount of skill involved, which is nice.

Mouse and Guns is certainly not the most complex game we’ve ever played, but it is one of the oddest. Still, anyone curious shout give it a try. The graphics are quite unique and really do a good job of standing out. Also, it’s not every day that you get to see a mouse dual-wielding shotguns.

AudioManager is a simple app that does one purpose – to let you manage your Android device’s sound settings on your home screen instead of going through your app screen and tapping on several options before you arrived at the appropriate sound option.

AudioManager Android app – What it is and What it does

AudioManager is a home screen widget and volume manager that lets you get live readings of your Android phone’s current volume levels. Once you’ve added the AudioManager widget on your phone’s home screen, you can tap on the widget to adjust the volume levels.

AudioManager is available in both free and paid versions. While the free version is enough for your phone’s sound management needs, the pro version has some additional advanced features including, more than 100 widget skins, two widget sizes, the ability to save audio profiles, create profile shortcuts and more.

Using AudioManager Android Sound App

Right out of the box, you can immediately use AudioManager. You open the app and the main screen will show several sound-related options including – alarm volume, media volume, alerts volume, ringer volume, system volume and voice call volume. Opposite each of these options are sound meters which you can adjust via the slider below the options.

The other tab on the main screen is the Profile tab which allows you to save the sound settings (for Pro version). You can then select any of these Profiles to use for your device’s sound options.

The app also allows you to choose various sound settings. The options under the app’s settings is just a matter of ticking them on/off to suit your preferences. The various options under the app’s settings are – volumizer, status bar shortcut, ringer and alerts listing, restore ringer, vibrate, my audio profiles, refresh rate, widget skin, transparent background and download skins.

While these features are probably not useful to a general user, we surely appreciate having more options to tweak the app and sound settings. We feel that if you are anyways going to use an app just to manage your sound settings, the more features it has, the better it is.

Final Thoughts About AudioManager

As mentioned at the start of this review, AudioManager is a pretty simple Android app for managing the different sound settings of your Android devices. This app fulfills that purpose and does it well.

While some may find this a not so useful app, we’re pretty sure that there will come a time when you will experience a moment when you feel you need better control over the sound settings of your Android phone. AudioManager can help you at such a time and save you from digging into the Android back-end just to get into the sound settings.

Should you download this app? Certainly. Makes it highly convenient to manage the sounds of your Android phone.

Two of the new features that can be found in Windows 8 are “Refresh” and “Reset”. These are two great new features which will quickly and easily allow you to get your Windows 8 PC running like new in no time if you start having issues with it. In the past if you wanted to reset your computer to it’s factory settings you would have to manually perform a complete clean install which was too difficult for the average user. What’s more you also lost all of your files and data. In Windows 8 this isn’t necessarily the case anymore.

Of course the first step in troubleshooting your PC is to perform a System Restore which will restore your computers settings back to the same state as they were when you last knew they were working. However if this still doesn’t work, then you should look into using the Refresh and Reset features.

Refreshing Your PC in Windows 8

The Refresh feature in Windows 8 will do the following

• Keep all your files and personalization settings
• Keep your Metro Apps
• Set your PC settings back to defaults
• Remove programs you installed
• Place a list of removed apps on your desktop

When you refresh your PC, Windows 8 is essentially installing a completely fresh new copy of the operating system, but it automatically restores your data and settings for you. This means that you don’t even have to worry about backing up your data to an external drive and then manually restoring it.

Here’s how you go about refreshing your PC:

1. Open up the charms bar and select Settings

   

2. Once you’ve clicked that click on More PC settings.

   

3. Now select the general tab on the left and you will see the options to refresh and reset your PC on the right hand side (you may need to scroll down)
   

4. Choose option 1 to refresh your PC by clicking Get Started

   

5. Windows will now present you with a description of what exactly refreshing your PC is going to do. When you’re ready to do it simply click Next, go grab a cup of tea and when you come back you should have a nice refreshed copy of Windows 8.

Resetting Your PC in Windows 8

Resetting your PC is more drastic measure to take if performing a System Restore or System Refresh hasn’t solved your issue. A system reset is also a good idea however if you plan on selling your PC as it completely wipes it clean and restores it to the original state you bought it in. All your data will be removed along with your settings and programs. If you want to reset your PC, it’s important that you back up your important files and data so you can copy them back over afterwards.

Here’s how to go about resetting your PC:

1. Open up the charms bar and go to your Settings

   

2. Then select More PC Settings

   

3. Select General from the menu on the left and you should see the option to reset your PC on the right (you may need to scroll down to see it)

   

4. Once you click next, Windows will ask you what kind of reset you want to perform. The first choice is a lot more thorough and can take a long time to carry out but it is highly recommended that you choose this option if you are selling on your PC. The second option is quicker but your files might still be recoverable if someone uses the right tools to recover them.

   

5. Once you’ve chosen how you want to remove your personal files, just sit back and let Windows do it’s thing. Once it’s done you will have a completely clean copy of Windows 8 on your PC.

Conclusion

These new recovery options in Windows 8 will certainly make life much easier for the general consumer. I recommend that if anyone’s having issues with Windows 8 that they first perform a System Restore, failing that they should Refresh their PC and if all else fails then resort to Resetting your PC.

On the next page, enter your correct email address and a password for Slide Rocket, and click on the orange button labeled “Create my account”.

2. Login to Slide Rocket to See Your Dashboard

On the next page, select “Login now” to get to your dashboard.

On the following page, enter your email address and the password you registered with, and click on “Login”.

Next time you visit Slide Rocket, you will have to login with the same details. Wait for the app to fully load. Then, you will be shown a welcome screen. Check the box before the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy, and click on “Ok” to agree to their policies.

The next page is your dashboard. Here’s how a new dashboard will look:

Here, you have to decide how you want to create your presentation. You have the option to create a completely new slide or import a slide presentation from PowerPoint or Google Doc.

If you are not sure of how you want your presentation to look, click on “Get Inspiration” at the top of your dashboard to see some other great presentations for inspiration.

3. Use Slide Rocket Intuitive Tools to Create Your Presentation

To create a new slide, select “New” with the “+” sign at the top left hand side of the page.

On the next page, enter a name for the presentation and select a theme e.g. white, black, chalkboard and so on. You can also change the dimensions of your presentation at the lower part of the page.

Click “Ok” to move to the next page where you can use Slide Rocket intuitive tools to create awesome presentations. Here’s how the page looks:

Note that with “1” above, at the left hand side of the page, you can choose tools to add texts, audios, charts, pictures, videos and so on. With “2” above, at the right hand side of the page, you can change the font of your texts, add effects, colors, strokes etc and to your presentation, and control many other properties. With “3” above, at the bottom of the page, you can create new pages for your slide, check into your library to locate items you have used in the past, and also preview your current presentation.

When you finish designing your presentation, select “Preview” at the lower left hand corner of that page to see your new presentation.

The “Preview Page” reveals a full page presentation. You can move to the next slides or return to previous slides with the arrows at the left hand side below the preview. After seeing your presentation, select “Close Preview” at the right hand side to return to the tools page in order to edit, publish, save or export your slide.

To publish your slide, click on “Share” and then “Publish” at the top of the Tools page.

You will be prompted to save changes, select “Yes”.

On the next page, you will see a whole lot of things you can do with your slide e.g.share, collaborate, analytics etc.

To embed the slide on your site, click “Get Embed Code”. On the following page, select the size you want and check “Show Border” if you want the slide to be bounded in a frame.

That’s it. Creating a great presentation with Slide Rocket is as easy as that.

4. Caution

Slide Rocket is an Internet-based application. So, avoid disconnecting your Internet while creating slides. Ensure you save your presentation if you have to disconnect your Internet in the middle of creating a presentation.

Now click in the second box (to your right hand side) to select a social media site you would like to update.

3. Get to The Correct Settings Page for the Social Network

Once these two important parameters are set, click on “GO” in a circle at the lower right hand side of the website.

Pinterest website will open in a new tab. If you are not already logged in, you will be prompted by Pinterest to enter your login information. However if you are logged in already, you will betaken directly to your Pinterest settings page. There you can change your email address and make other necessary changes.

That’s it. Updating profile email address on Pinterest (or any of the 13 major social network listed on Bliss Control) is as simple and fast as that.
