I just stumble upon this video on the YouTube front page. It’s an Google hangout between J Sider (Bandpage), Jack Conte, Jeff Kuprycz (A- Frame Management) and David Kostiner Esq (Founding Partner of Counsel LLP) about how to utilize YouTube as a musician. I did learn a lot of stuff on this video, you guys might too.

To be honest, there was a long time I haven’t been that excited by a video.
For the record, Jack isn’t using any VJ software in this video. He did recorded the video animations first, then played the music over it.

“I experimented with VJ software – in the end it was $400, and i didn’t feel like shelling out. so i made the video before, and exported the whole thing as one clip. brought it into ableton then.” – Jack Conte

Jack definitely found a way to make electronic music visually attractive!

DSLR iPad Monitor & Control

Until now, when I was filming my videosong I often had problems of focus or framing. I had to install my camera (Canon 550D/T2i) then take a few pictures to verify the adjustment of the device, then, put a cardboard box on the chair that I would use in order to be able to adjust the focus correctly. Then, start recording and sit where the cardboard box was to start playing my part. If I made a mistake, I would walk to the camera and stop th recording (separating each shot allows me to avoid searching for hours for the right take in the footage). Then I had to start all over again. Long story short, a pain in the ass!

So I started looking for a new way for me to make the process easier. Using an external monitor with a remote seemed the most suitable way but this is pretty expensive (about $400) and I can’t afford it. I was then looking for a small monitor (7-8″) about the size of my iPad. I told myself that there’s maybe a hack to use the iPad as a monitor. I made a research on YouTube and found THE solution I was looking for.

It is very simple. Canon provides a software that allows you to control the camera connected by a USB cable on a computer (so it requires a very long cable if the camera is far from the computer). I didn’t even know such a software existed since I never looked at the manual of my camera, or watched what was on the CD in the box. How stupid I am! The computer is usually closer to me than the camera so it makes the filming process way easier than walking around the room checking the camera.

But the icing on the cake is an application called “Air Display” that lets you use the iPad/iPhone as an additional screen connected to my laptop through the WiFi. So now I can control my camera remotely via my iPad without leaving my chair. Canon’s software allows to easily setup luninosity, focus, ISO and the start/stop of the recording.
