He’ll speak about how far we’ve come, and lay out the very real stakes in this election: are we going to continue to move forward rebuilding an economy that’s meant to last with a growing middle class and more Americans getting a fair shot, or are we going to go back to the same failed policies that crashed our economy and left too many folks struggling to catch up? That’s the choice.

These kinds of events are one of the hallmarks of this organization. Millions of people first came to know and support candidate Barack Obama in 2007 and 2008 when they met him at rallies and town halls in their communities. We’re now entering the general election of his final campaign — this day should be something pretty special.

Thousands of supporters have already RSVP’d, but the campaign has reserved special tickets to make sure volunteers get the chance to be a little closer to the action.

Here’s how it works: just sign up to volunteer at a phone bank this week, and you’ll get a free ticket for our Volunteer Priority Access section at the rally.

Sign up now and save your spot, click here for details.

Join the Virginia Coalition to Protect Women’s Health Rally in Richmond on October 15th to stand united with one pro-choice voice and demand our leaders end their war on Virginia women!

Time: October 15th 1-3 pm

Buses arranged around the state to help you join in the rally. Tickets for the bus will cost will cost $15 for adults and $10 for young people and students. Kids accompanied by the paying adult are free. Inability to pay should not deter you; scholarships are available. For those not taking the buses parking is being arranged and will be available at the West Main Street Parking Deck (801 West Main Street Richmond, VA 23220; map, click here).

“These regulations are not about keeping Virginians safe. They are about circumventing the U.S. Constitution to shutter women’s health clinics and make it more difficult for Virginia women to make their own decisions about their health care. Bob McDonnell and the Republicans should be ashamed for this politically-motivated effort to restrict access to safe, legal reproductive health options for Virginia women.” – Brian Moran, Chairman Democratic Party of Virginia

VaDWC asks you to do all you can to support these candidates: volunteer to canvass, phone bank, stuff envelopes, help with get out the vote efforts, and donate where you can. We need you to make sure we increase our numbers in the House and maintain our control of the Senate in the November 2011 General Election. Now is not the time to sit back and watch others do this incredibly important and vital work. If you do not have an opposed candidate in your area step outside of your district and help a candidate who desperately needs our boots on the ground.

Victory for Women’s Health

Thanks to the affordable care act, women can receive preventive care without additional costs

President Obama worked tirelessly to ensure Americans have access to quality and affordable health care and the Affordable Care Act achieved that goal.

One of the highlights of this legislation is its focus on preventive care, which helps stop health problems before they start. And on Monday, Health and Human Services announced new guidelines for women’s preventative care.

Before the Affordable Care Act, women were more vulnerable to high health care costs than men.

Since women require more regular contact with health care providers for preventative measures like yearly pap smears and mammograms, their out-of-pocket costs are higher.

And too often, the combination of women’s lower incomes and burdensome out-of-pocket health costs means that women forgo necessary preventive services.

Women have unique healthcare needs throughout their life and many can struggle with chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Yet, while women are more likely to need preventive health care services, a recent national survey found that nearly half of women (44%) reported delaying or avoiding needed care because of cost, compared with 35% of men.

But thanks to these new preventative care guidelines, the cost sharing requirements are removed. This improves women’s access to important preventive services.

One study found that the rate of women getting a mammogram went up as much as 9 percent when cost sharing was removed.

The Affordable Care Act requires new health insurance plans to cover women’s preventive services including well-woman visits, screening for gestational diabetes, breastfeeding support, domestic violence screening, counseling and screening for sexually transmitted infections and access to FDA contraception without charging a co-payment, co-insurance or a deductible.

Additional Stats:

Virtually all women (more than 99%) aged 15–44 who have ever had sexual intercourse have used at least one contraceptive method. [Guttmacher Institute, accessed 8/3/11]

Overall, 62% of the 62 million women aged 15–44 are currently using a method. [Guttmacher Institute, accessed 8/3/11]

Almost one-third (31%) of these 62 million women do not need a method because they are infertile; are pregnant, postpartum or trying to become pregnant; have never had intercourse; or are not sexually active. [Guttmacher Institute, accessed 8/3/11]

Thus, only 7% of women aged 15–44 are at risk for unintended pregnancy but are not using contraceptives. [Guttmacher Institute, accessed 8/3/11]

March 8th is International Women’s Day, and today is the centennial observance of this special Day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.

Suffragettes campaigned for women’s right to vote. The word ‘Suffragette’ is derived from the word "suffrage" meaning the right to vote. International Women’s Day honors the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women’s success, and reminds of inequities still to be redressed. The first International Women’s Day was in 1911.
