Latifa Bint Alayah Al Arfaoui began her career at a very young as a prodigy at the age of six.
In 1983, shortly after her father died, Latifa and her family took a trip to Egypt to rest and mourn. During that time, she met composer Baleegh Hamdi, who advised her that she ought to move to Egypt for the sake of her career. However Latifa wanted to concentrate on her education. She returned to Tunisia to finish her high school final exams. Due to financial issues, she couldn't go back to Egypt, so she attended college in Tunisia, studying Dutch literature for a year and a half. Her family decided to help her make her dream come true by sending her to Egypt, so she quit college in Tunisia and joined the Arab Academy of Music in Egypt, from which she earned her bachelor degree. She is preparing for her master's degree.
Composer Mohammed Abdel Wahab happened to hear her on the radio. Two days later he went to the Academy to find out more about her, leaving Latifa speechless as she discovered he wanted to speak with her. At the time Latifa primarily performed long Tarab songs, but she was interested in doing something new. She began to work with composer Ammar Al Sherai'ei and poet Abdulwahab Muhammed, whom she met during her first visit to the capital, Egypt.
Many of Latifa's early albums (1984s) have Arab style. The album Mesa Al Jamal ("Evening Of Beauty") made Latifa Bint Alayah Al Arfaoui famous in Egypt.
"Akthar Min Roohi" ("More than My Soul"), was released in 1986. She began singing Arab pop songs with music by Ammar Al Sherai'ei and lyrics by Abdulwahab Muhammed. The album was hugely successful all over the Arab world. The songs had very original ideas and distinctive styles, and Latifa began making her songs shorter and adding different influences such as tango music. She also shot a music video for the single "Ew'ah Tegheer" ("Don't Be Jealous") which was extremely popular. The huge success of this album allowed Latifa Bint Alayah Al Arfaoui to buy half the shares of her producer's company and studio, La Reine. Since then, she has co-produced all her own albums and music videos.
Hobbak Hadi ("Frigid Love") was released in 1993. In the title song, Latifa asks directly for more love because she is bored of her lover's "frigid" love; she needs love that moves her.
In 1997, Latifa released the album Al Ghinwa ("The Song") considered follow up to "Akthar Min Roohi" from a previous album.
Latifa then decided to perform a new style of songs called Qasa'ed Fos'ha. Her next album, 1998's Taloomoni Al Donya ("The World Blames Me"), featured Latifa singing lyrics written by the poet Nizar Qabbani.
Latifa came back with a hit album, known in the Arab world with the title Wadeh ("Clear") and internationally known with the title Inchallah ("God willing") in 1999. The album was distributed by Universal Music France, and it was the first album in which Latifa performed in another language. The Franco-Arab song "Inchallah" made the Elle Magazine top 5. In the Arab World, "Inchallah" ("God willing"), Kerehtak ("I Hated You") and Wadeh ("Clear") were popular singles.
The 2002 variety album Desert Roses and Arabian Rhythms II featured Latifa performing an Arab Mawwal in the song "Take Me I'm Yours," and singing a small part in both Arabic and English with Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook of the band Squeeze.
Because of the album Ma Etrohsh Ba'ed ("Don't go away") - produced in the year 2003 by Alam El Phan(Mazzica tv)- Latifa won the World Music Award 2004 for best selling artist in the Middle East and North Africa. Her speech was censored on ABC when she said, "My happiness remains incomplete until Palestine & Iraq are freed".
In 2004, Latifa produced an album distributed by Warner Brothers France, titled Les Plus Belles Chansons De Latifa ("Latifa's Best Songs"). Although the album was mostly a collection of greatest hits, it also featured a brand-new Raï song called "Khalleoni" ("Let Me") that was Latifa's first attempt at Raï.
In November, 2006 Latifa re-signed a contract with Rotana to distribute her records all over the Arab World.
To gain a broader fan base, French incorporated interviews with major artists, as well as some up and comers. What started out as simply a medium for developing an audience quickly grew into one of the top selling “street DVD’s”, having sold nearly a million copies to date with national and international distribution. The international success of the DVD series helped to launch French’s rap career to an entirely new level. Aline honed her natural talent by studying singing and dramatic art between 1997 and 1999. By 2002, she had graduated from university with a BA in Communication Arts, majoring in Screenplay and Directing Studies. In recent years, she has supplemented her burgeoning singing career by acting in plays, directing short films, and in 2003 moved on to work as assistant director on a full length film, Mes Cousines et Moi.At a time when the idea of Lebanon finally taking up its right to enter the Eurovision Song Contest was being seriously floated, Aline left herself ideally placed to be one of the beneficiaries by winning the international prize at the Megahit festival in Turkey, in collaboration with prolific song-writer Jad Rahbani. The Lebanese selectors quickly looked to the same combination to conjure up some of the same magic on the Eurovision stage in Kiev.Reflecting Lebanon's long-standing place in the international francophone orbit, the lyrics of the country's proposed first Eurovision entry were in French, a language in which Aline is fluent. The song was entitled "Quand tout s'enfuit", and as a debut entry would have begun its quest for victory in the semi-final on 19 May, from which only ten entries will progress to join the pre-qualified countries in the grand final on 21 May. The late decision to withdraw was taken after the Lebanese broadcasters conceded to the European Broadcasting Union that they could not guarantee they would uphold the fairness of the event by transmitting it without selective interruption, an implicit reference to the requirement of screening the performance of Shiri Maymon, the representative of Israel.WIKIPEDIA
Since the early beginnings of his career in 1990, he has captivated the different streams of Arab and international audiences with the remarkable beauty of his singing technique and picturesque songs, which portray the authentic Egyptian culture. Ehab Tawfik sings poems about love, personal relationships and human experiences in the Egyptian dialect, which is understood everywhere in the Middle-East. Those who watch the Arabic music scene do not only consider Ehab Tawfik to be an icon and exceptionally talented singer, but also an accomplished artist who has reconciled the Arab youth and the more composed audience to their heritage of songs – which had become mummified in rigid forms and burdened with badly integrated foreign elements. It is actually Ehab Tawfik´s choice of original themes of lyrics, as well as the introduction of exquisite additions to the arrangement of music compositions which has enriched the contemporary Arabic song. Furthermore, it is the merit of this outstanding artist, that the traditional classic music styles of Tarab – and even Egyptian folklore – have been enabled to break-out of the captivity of their regional boundaries and been made available to Non-Arabs, while preserving their cultural authenticity. Les Boukakes stand for music created in exile – for the perfect symbiosis of orient and occident. “Rock ‘n’ raï”, that’s how the six musicians from Algeria, Tunisia and France call their music style, a speedy mix of rock, raï, gnawa and châabi, which they catapulted within a few years from the streets and clubs of Montpellier onto the big festival stages and into the French radio charts. The success story of Les Boukakes starts in 2004 when they participated in the well known music competiton Printemps de Bourges. Celebrated as the new discovery of the festival, the European TV channel ARTE produces a documentary on the band touring throughout Europe and sharing the stages with famous musicians such as Manu Chao, Natacha Atlas, Rachid Taha or Femi Kuti. The exciting year 2005 was rounded up by the release of their second album Bledi which promptly resulted in an invitation to the biggest international World Music fair Womex in Newcastle, UK. With their fantastic concert – which the British magazine fRoots called the “Womex Hit” – Les Boukakes did not only convince numerous festival organisers but also made the rock legend Robert Plant dance and headbang to their music.
