Wednesday,
        June 19, 2013 12:00 PM
Where: The Fralin Museum of Art 155 Rugby Road, Charlottesville, VA, 22904
Description: This exhibition will feature six contemporary photographers—Robert Adams, Lois Conner, Michael Lundgren, Mike Osborne, Mark Ruwedel, and Joni Sternbach—who engage the landscape of the American
West as their subject. These artists reflect the seminal and influential photography of Ansel Adams in their work, yet, while their motives and means are strikingly similar, the view has changed. After the grand display of pristine wilderness that Adams’ best-known works sought to convey, these contemporary artists discovered another America, one that is full of human interventions and follies. Their work allows us to look at the new American West with fresh eyes and, in so doing, carries on the documentary conviction that seeing is understanding.

A simultaneous Ansel Adams exhibition will also be on view at The Fralin, allowing for a discussion of changing landscapes and the resultant transformed attitudes of contemporary artists who photograph the new West.

The Fralin Museum of Art’s programming is made possible by the generous support of The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation.

The exhibition is made possible through the generous support of Albemarle Magazine and Ivy Publications LLC’s Charlottesville Welcome Book.

Description: The 138 photographs of the Meredith Collection are original works of legendary American photographer Ansel Adams (1902–1984). Documenting the arc of his prolific career between the late 1920s and the early 1980s, the collection includes early works as Adams first explored his medium, and masterworks from his most productive period dating from the late 1930s through the 1950s. This exhibition reveals Adams’ commitment to photography, his passionate devotion to the American landscape, and the technical precision that defined his work. Adams had a profound impact on the medium, coupling photography’s unique capacity to capture a singular perception with his recognition of the beauty, importance, and fragility of the landscapes he recorded.

This exhibition is made possible by Lynn and Tom Meredith, who have loaned their extraordinary collection to support the arts and environmental understanding at U.Va. The collection is being shown in conjunction with a group of contemporary photographers whose work is indebted to the legacy of Ansel Adams, as well as programs for public engagement through OpenGrounds.

The Fralin Museum of Art’s programming is made possible by the generous support of The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation.

The exhibition is made possible through the generous support of The Office of the Vice President for Research, OpenGrounds, Albemarle Magazine, and Ivy Publications LLC’s Charlottesville Welcome Book.
