Aside from the environmental impacts due to combustion of fossil fuels, the importation cost of such fuels is now increasing. The world's energy needs started to increase, yet the production and sources of fossil fuels are limited. That is why development of renewable energy is now at its peak. Developed countries are now starting to use renewable energy and develop related technologies to further enhance its energy production capability. United Kingdom, for instance, is committed to have 10 percent of their electricity generated from renewable energy sources by 2010 and further increasing it in 20 percent by 2020. It is a part of reducing their dependence on imported fossil fuels and at the same time reducing emissions of greenhouse gases that causes drastic climate change.

Global warming is not a ranting of a doomsday-forecasting scientist any more; it has become a stark reality. Every one of us now has some idea about what it is but few are bothered about it. Every body thinks that it is the problem of somebody else in some distant country. But the reality is, it is in our doorstep and will catch up one day or other. So stop passing the buck and take action, now.

The Dangers Of Modern Time

At first, global warming was a natural phenomenon; the greenhouse gases acted as blanket and kept earth from becoming too cold. But as the human society made evolutionary progress, the use of fossil fuels began and then the carbon level in the atmosphere started to increase. Side by side huge forests were cleared to make room for the expanding human population. The repercussions started within the middle of the last century. Scientists started to notice that the surface temperature was getting higher; we were having more storms and cyclonic disturbances than before. But it took 20 more years for people to grasp the implication of such findings.

Now we are staring at a global catastrophe. Rising sea levels have started to threaten tiny island nations like Vanuatu in the Pacific Ocean. Floods have increased, as have devastating hurricanes and cyclones. Elsewhere heat waves are killing thousands and some places are facing prolonged droughts.

The Bleak Future

If this continues, scientists say, within the next 50 to 60 years there will be acute food shortage as the rivers in many food producing regions of eastern Asia will flood fertile land and damage crops. The impact will be felt even in US and Europe, countries that buy the grain from these regions. Malaria and other epidemics will become rampant, killing thousands. Civil unrest will follow plunging the world into total chaos. In the animal world, species after species will become extinct, especially in the marine world, as coral reefs will be destroyed. Phytoplankton, which lies at the bottom of the food chain, will disappear, as seawater will get warmer, taking with it the entire food chain.

Some scientists studying global warming in the Arctic have discovered thinning sea ice near the northern reaches of Alaska. The summer of 2007 showed the least sea ice since sea ice was first tracked in 1979. Scientists participating in the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's Gyre Exploration Project cruised aboard the Canadian Coast Guard's ship, the Icebreaker, to see the effects of global warming for themselves.

When they reached the area where ice would usually be the thickest and heaviest, the ship sailed right through. When they did see ice, it was in a state of disintegration because of global warming. Most of the ice remaining was young ice, which is more vulnerable to thaw. The scientists took their data home to analyze during the colder months.

Another group, with the Arctic Modeling Group and the IJIS Research Group, set sail along the Alaskan coast in the Chukchi Sea. Their mission was to study different variables of the ocean water that might affect phytoplankton. They found that the water was warmer than the satellite statistics. The satellite showed 10 degrees Celsius, while their measurements showed 14 degrees Celsius. This is an example of global warming.

One study was done linking the Russian peat bogs with global warming. The bogs produce a large amount of methane gas. According to carbon dating that was done, this has been the case since the last ice age. Since methane is one of the greenhouse gases, this impacts global warming.

However, the studies also show that the peat bogs absorb carbon dioxide at an impressive rate. They contain the largest carbon stores on the planet. Slinky Closed Loop: This loop field is also in Horizontal orientation, in this pipes are overlay each other. Very easy way of picturing Slinky fields is to imagine holding a slinky on the top and bottom with your hand and then move your hands in opposite directions. Slinky Closed Loop being used when there is not sufficient space to install horizontal system.

Closed pond loop: Closed Looping has been becoming increasingly popular. It is achieved by placing coils of pipe at the bottom of an appropriately sized pond or water source. Closed Loops system has been promoted by the DNR (Department of Natural Resources); who support geothermal systems and the use of ponds for geothermal systems. Closed Loop field is for a 12-ton system, it is unusually large for most residential applications. A pond loop is extremely similar to a slinky loop, except that it is attached to a frame and located in a body of water versus soil.

Closed pond system uses ponds for geothermal systems. On this pond loop coils of pipes are placed at bottom of pond or some other water reservoir. Pond loop system is similar to slinky pond system only difference is that this system is attached to a frame and is located is water; whereas slinky system is placed on soil.

Recycling has been around longer than any of today's young teens have been alive and maybe that's why recycling has never been a question for them as to whether or not they should recycle but has always been more of a "How else can we help when recycling," kind of thought process. My own generation, having grown up in the 70's has a different mind-set. In fact, I have to remind myself the reasons we recycle, when to recycle and how to keep my family and household up-to-date and aware of the reasons to recycle.

This new, younger generation, is an impressive one, to me. They seem to be aware of humanity on a global level. Lessons they've been taught in school on a consistent basis have always had a common theme; take care of the Earth or we may lose it. They are keenly aware of how wasteful prior generations have been and seem to be of one mind when it comes to solving those problems.

When we recycle we are taking a step away from ourselves and begin to think about the Earth as a whole. It has become obvious to us that by recycling our waste we are going to be leaving less waste for future generations to have to deal with and we are taking an active step in keeping the planet 'around' for a longer period of time.

Today's teens have inspired me by their dedication to helping others who have less than they do and how wasting any commodity or resource we may have, the idea of wasting it is simply not an option. They are forever coming up with new ways to reduce production of an item or they are constantly thinking up ways in which the item can be reused; they do this without needing to "think" about it, it's the only way of life they've known.

There is an organization that has taken something many of us take for granted and figured out a way to pass on to those who are unable - to feel a little normal. Locks of Love takes hair donated by people and has that hair made into wigs for people who have had their hair fall out due to chemotherapy treatments or as the result of another disease or condition. How brilliant to think of those of us who grow our hair without thought or effort, to be able to have the privellige of helping another! It's beautiful to me, how this new generation is always thinking about how they can help others.

There are two teens that I know of who took this idea of growing their hair in order to donate it, and dedicated this past summer to doing just that; and the week before school opened in September, sat together and had their hair cuts. What is remarkable about these two teens is that only one is a girl, the other, a young man knew there was a need for other boys his age to have wigs made for them and took on the challenge valiantly. Boys don't have to have their hair quite as long in order to donate it, but it does have to be grown-out. My awe at teens like these two from town, who at such a volatile age, where self-image is so very fragile, would step out of their comfort zones of following the crowd, in order to do grow their hair long enough for it to be recycled and reused by others, is overwhelming. By stepping out of those comfort zones they leave themselves in a vulnerable situation, where they can become the targets for some of the ridicule that goes on in Middle school; and yet they still do it.

Maybe they are less likely to go against the idea of recycling because of the timing of their birthdates; it's just refreshing to know that the idea of recycling is strong in this up coming generation and if we continue to foster that innate responsibility in them, we may just keep this planet around a little longer.
