Karen Jackson Awarded Rose Frolik Award 2008-2009

Karen Jackson, Programming Assistant and Transfer Credit Evaluation Specialist with the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the Agricultural Research Division, has been named the 2008-2009 Rose Frolik Award winner. She was presented the award during the April 14 meeting of the University of Nebraska Office Professionals Association.

Karen is an active member of the UNOPA and the Nebraska Educational Office Professionals Association boards. She also holds membership in the National Association of Educational Office Professionals. For the past 3 years, she has been recognized with national awards for web design in the NAEOP Skilled Professional category. Her nominators are happy to report that her work is done with a positive attitude, excellence, intelligence, caring and good humor. For winning the award, Jackson received a personalized plaque, a $600 stipend, and a one-year membership to UNOPA.

The Rose Frolik Award was established in 1988 to recognize a UNOPA member who demonstrates the attributes of UNOPA's founder and first president, Rose Frolik. Rose feels that how you do your work may be a lot more important than what you do.

Other nominees were Marcy Tintera, Staff Assistant with the College of Law and Doreen Wagenaar, Administrative Technician II with the Department of Art and Art History.

Congratulations ladies! We are very proud of you!

2008-09 Floyd S. Oldt Silver Pen and Outstanding Staff Award Winners

UNOPA held its annual Floyd S. Oldt Silver Pen and Outstanding Staff Awards Luncheon on February 10, 2009. Congratulations to Donna Boone, Administrative Support Secretary in the Office of Technology Development, and Sandi Jones, Project Assistant for Instructional Design and Development in Extended Education and Outreach, who are the 2008-09 recipients of the Floyd S. Oldt Silver Pen award. Donna was nominated by David Conrad. Letters of support mentioned her dedication, strong work ethic and genuine care for assisting others. Conrad stated, “Our nominee truly wants to be of service in taking the initiative to do whatever is required to serve our ‘customers’”. She “continually searches for ways to enhance the reputation of our office and the University through her professionalism and willingness to go beyond what is written in a formal job description.” Sandi was nominated by Cindy Roine. “Willingness to take on new challenges and a desire to find efficiencies make this person a valuable employee of this institution” said Roiné. Letters of support praised Jones for always being willing to help others and for motivating colleagues to work as a team. They also credited her for highlighting the positive and adding humor to the workplace.

The 2008-09 recipient of the Floyd S. Oldt Outstanding Staff award was presented to Pamela Hanks, Project Assistant for Marketing in Extended Education and Outreach. Pamela was nominated by Keith Bartels. Her nominator described Hanks as someone who is known for her strong work ethic and dedication to the University. She has a desire to learn and the ability to teach or share what has been learned with others. Hanks is highly praised for her work in project management. A support letter stated, “When our organization was looking for volunteers to take on the added responsibilities of project managers, this individual readily accepted the challenge and did so with clarity and focus. On top of her normal responsibilities, this person has been participating in project management training and is now the project manager for the largest project in our organization. They have kept the project on task and on time under tight deadlines and daily challenges.”

Congratulations to Donna, Sandi, and Pamela. Well done ladies!

2008-09 Floyd S. Oldt Boss of the Year

UNOPA held its 27th annual Bosses Luncheon on November 11, 2008. Congratulations to Beverly Russell, Assistant Director of Instructional Design and Development at Extended Education and Outreach, who was the 2008 recipient of the Floyd S. Oldt Boss of the Year award.

Russell has been with UNL for 12 years. She has worked in instructional design and distance education that entire time, first with the Division of Continuing Studies (DCS), and then with Extended Education and Outreach (EEandO) when DCS was eliminated and its departments were rolled into EEandO. There she served as a coordinator and team leader for the instructional design team supporting graduate distance programs and the special projects team. In 2007, Russell was named Assistant Director and placed in charge of a newly merged group formed from two distinct teams.

Beverly Russell's nominators all credited her organizational and motivational skills for making this transition into one team go smoothly for everyone involved. Nominator Eyde Olson praised Russell for being very active in the professional development of her team. "She asks for and then carefully analyzes our ideas, which is not only motivating, but also gives us a sense of ownership because our suggestions are taken so seriously. She motivates and strengthens the entire team by encouraging everyone to develop special expertise in particular areas to share with teammates and serve as a resource." Other letters of support showcased her interpersonal skills. "As a sounding board for ideas or problems, or just for sharing, this person is an ever-present source of wisdom--listening and comprehending, then counseling without judging, directing without controlling, informing without dominating, and recommending with respect."

Again we congratulate Beverly Russell for being chosen as our 2008 Boss of the Year. We also want to congratulate Tami Phillips, Registrar of Customer Service at Extended Education and Outreach on her nomination.
