The Rediscovery of Reiki

Up until recently, Reiki was passed exclusively via oral tradition. Due to this, there are many variations in the story of Reiki, as well as missing pieces to the emergence of Reiki as we know it today. We do not know the exact details involving Mr. Usui’s quest for Reiki nor the exact circumstances that lead him on his initial quest. It has only been in the last 10-15 years that members of the Reiki community in Japan have opened their hearts to us in the West and supplied us with truthful information about how Usui Reiki came to be on our planet. Prior to this time, the facts were either distorted or not disclosed and we were left in the dark.

Mikao Usui was born on August 15, 1865 in Taniai, Japan. He was always a spiritual seeker. He practiced Kiko, which is similar to Qi Gong or Chi Kung. Kiko, and consists of breathing exercises, meditation, and movement. It could be described as a ‘moving meditation’. He studied medicine, psychology, religion, and spiritual development. He was a member of a metaphysical group called Rei Jyutu Ka. Mikao Usui became secretary to Shinpei Goto(the head of the Health and Welfare Department who went on to become the Mayor of Tokyo).Usui sensei started a business, which failed. In 1914, at the age of 49, he decided to become a Buddhist Monk. In 1922, he went on a 21-day retreat of meditation, prayers, chanting and fasting at Mount Kurama in Kyoto, Japan. While standing under a waterfall, he did a meditation designed to open and purify the Crown Chakra. This caused him to have a spiritual awakening on the final day of his retreat. A powerful light entered the top of his head. His awareness was expanded and he realized a great power had entered him. Before him appeared five symbols in the colors of the rainbow. The meanings and uses of the symbols were communicated to him intuitively, spiritually, from a Higher Source.

The Four Miracles

Upon leaving the Mountain, he stubbed his toe and instinctively placed his hands over the wound. When he removed his hands, he discovered that the wound was healing and the bleeding had already stopped. This is considered the first of the four healing miracles.

On his journey home he stopped to eat to break his 21 day fast. He was cautioned against overeating, as anyone who is familiar with fasting will understand that the body is typically not capable of digesting large quantities of food after such a long rest of activity, but he was able to handle all he consumed. This is considered the second miracle.

Mr. Usui was informed that the restaurant owner’s granddaughter was suffering with a bad toothache, in severe pain. He placed his hands on the sides of her mouth, and the pain disappeared. This is the third miracle. When he returned home, he visited the Abbot at the Zen monastery, who was suffering from arthritis. He placed his hands on the Abbot and he felt immediate relief. This is considered the fourth miracle.

The Emergence of Reiki

Mr. Usui decided to take his gift of healing into the communities that were impoverished and needed it most. He opened a clinic and worked in the “slums” of Japan, his goal to cure those who were reduced to beggars so they could live a more prosperous, harmonious life. He was surprised to see that some of the patients, who had shown evidence of cure, were soon reduced to the same level of illness and poverty as before.

He realized that it was not due to their lack of appreciation, or that the Reiki didn’t workit was that some people need more than one healing session, and he was the only one trying to do all the healings in the clinic. It is from his realization that other Reiki Masters were needed that he created the attunement process.

The Principles of Reiki

The principles of Reiki are a guide to harmonious living, and abiding by them can be healing in and of themselves. Mr. Usui noticed that those who benefited most from Reiki, practitioner and clients alike, were those who actively embraced a spiritual set of principles in their daily lives.

Reiki Attunement Defined

During the 1980s, the word "attunement" was used when talking about opening someone''s pathway to universal energy. The official definition is being in harmony or the feeling of being one with another being. In order to be at harmony with anything, there must be balance within as well as existing in a receptive state.

In order to be at harmony with anything, there must be balance within as well as existing in a receptive state. This means that you must be in receptive mode in order to be opened to Reiki energy. Reiki cannot be forced on anyone.

There are many words for a person''s energy. You may hear it called life force, ki, qui, prana or many other variations. Usui Reiki uses just one unique form of universal energy that differs from life force energy. That''s why you have to open to this particular form of universal energy. Mikao Usui was connected directly to a very strong type of universal energy but all through history people have used or connected to other forms.

Whenever you get an attunement from a Reiki teacher, there''s a shift that occurs within your body, mind and spirit because your pathway to the universe is opening to let more universal energy flow through you. If you want to be totally open so that you can be with the universe, you''ll have to study and practice for years. Mikao Usui spent years taking in all sorts of knowledge before he reached his first awakening. It was only after his second awakening following 3 years of disciplined Zen practice and deep meditation that he connected to the universal energy.

Even though the phrase "Reiki attunement" has become quite popular, many people don''t truly understand what it means. An attunement is just the first step to opening yourself to receive universal energy. Only people that are serious about Reiki and all it has to offer can truly understand what a Reiki attunement is.

Mikao Usui never became a doctor but he did travel a path that allowed him to leave his mark on the world. While medical doctors aren''t required to study Reiki, it''s not uncommon to find trained and qualified medical doctors that are also Reiki students or masters. These doctors can apply healing in many different ways following the receiving of their attunement.

You may feel as if you''ve received the feeling of an attunement from someone that wasn''t connected to the universal energy. There are different energies inside of you that aren''t universal energies, which means they aren''t Reiki. The energy known as Reiki is unique from any other. A Reiki attunement can''t be described as any other type of energy.

Something to keep in mind is that vibrations of harmony and love that universal energy provides always feel the same.
