Our topic for our debut was “How do we know what we know,” but as I mentioned, we stepped several directions away from there. Consider this an intro for next week’s show. (July 1, 2012, 10pm US Eastern time)

This new incarnation of the show has a very different cast. Paul Fidalgo has remained part of the crew, but we’ve unfortunately got the show setup at a time that’s difficult for him to attend. Other participants are folks I’ve drawn close to on Google+, that place that has sucked up all my attention and time when I’m not on the soccer fields or being a parent. The cast will actually change hands from time to time, so we’ll almost always have to start with introductions, lol.

We’re very happy to have Thinking Unenslaved reinstated in this format. Yes, we’ve got some work to do (I need to relocate my computer to a spot with better lighting, for example), but I’m actually very pleased with the show’s results. My thanks to everyone involved for making it happen.

The March Blog Party Episode is below (this is really the “most recent” episode player ~ they don’t make one for each episode):

1. Regarding Raissa‘s input: The conflation of belief with fact clearly does not serve her cause. She was asked on several occasions to provide evidence to back up (or prop up, as the case may be) her assertions, and willfully resorted to the exclusive expression of her faith. This is unfortunate, because the operative definition of “faith” is “belief in something which can likely be, or has already been, disproved.” There are reasonable, factual arguments which would sustain her position on adoption, for example. Refusing to research (let alone even so much as attempt to reference) the available material, deferring instead to religious dogma while declaiming its inherent “rightness,” made for sadly shallow and dispassionate listening. Unfortunately, she managed to relegate her entire thesis to irrelevance.
2. Regarding what Angie said on the issue of “making a rape victim carry to term is a form of rape.” I’m getting a lot of shit for this one from some acquaintances who happen to be rape victims who chose not to abort. The operative word being missed in the lectures I’m getting is “making” or “forcing” the rape victim to carry to term. The pro-choice stance is about choice. That my friends who happen to have gone through this scenario had the right to choose not to abort is exactly what people like Angie and myself are fighting to sustain. Bringing a child conceived in this manner to term is not being vilified as a perpetual rape. Being forced to do so, however, is.
3. Sciolism, to me, is kind of a cross between the Argument from Ignorance and False Equivalence. Raissa positioned herself as knowledgeable on the entire subject of the subsequent pregnancy of a rape victim. However, her friend’s experience only makes her familiar with her friend’s experience. A woman who is raped (or is the victim of forced incest if you don’t care to apply the term “rape” to that), can a) independently elect to, b) be forced via authority to, c) be shamed/coerced into, d) be encouraged via peer-pressure to carry the fetus to term. Obviously, Raissa’s friend can only fall into one of those categories, thus making Raissa’s experience a mere 25% of the whole, and second-hand at that. Most certainly (and obvious to all), her “experience” as a mere observer is dubious at best, and the argument from presumed knowledge and insistence upon that “knowledge” as “fact” (even though it was really “belief”) was sciolism in its most nefarious form. She was unwilling to listen to very persuasive arguments to the contrary.
4. At its most basic level, I respect the desire to preserve “life”, which presumably sits at the foundation of the pro-life side of the argument. The problem with it is exactly what Laci so brilliantly pointed out: By more than a factor of ten, people throughout the world are starving. By more than a factor of a hundred, people die needlessly, victims of the changing climate, government/nationalist conflict, failure and lack of local resources, and exploitation. If the debate is truly about preserving “life”, the continual focus on one of the relatively smaller contributors to “death” is woefully misplaced. Moreover, as a condition of individual choice as opposed to the results of hegemonic intervention, the anti-abortion manages to undermine its own moralistic basis. In her short time with Raissa, Laci managed to lay bare the oft-ignored hypocrisy of the pro-life movement: It’s not really about “life” at all, per se. It’s about the enforcement of one group’s definition of “rightness” over the populace for the rather petty purpose of possessing the self-referential invocation of the word “right”.

That all having been said, I must also say it was very difficult not to get caught up in Angie’s passion, Raissa’s sanctimonious presumption of precedence was beyond offensive, and Laci stole the show with a perfectly executed reduction of the anti-choice mission to control individual action under religious pretense.

Two things:

One: that last phrase is willfully plagiarized from my (Synthaetica) old post by the same title, which is basically the inspiration for tonight’s show.

Two: Sciolism: 1. A pretentious attitude of scholarship; superficial knowledgeability. 2. Rare The practice of opinionating on subjects of which one has only superficial knowledge. 3. A superficial knowledge, especially when pretentiously revealed.

You can probably imagine where I’m going with this. I recently was doing some maintenance on my website and came across some old posts on this topic which I did for the Blogswarms Against Theocracy back in 2007 an 2008. The subject matter still rings true today, and in fact, as I have more and more “discussions” with theists hell-bent on saving our godless “souls”, I see it as more and more of a problem: and one that is actually rather multifaceted.

Aside from getting kicked off Skype at random times and not being able to use a condenser mic where I live, I guess I’m doing at least some things right with the radio show. It probably has more to do with our co-hosts, guests, and Zach’s growing facility for taking over when Skype takes a poop on me, but the numbers pretty much speak for themselves.

Some of the numbers are a little “off”, in that, for example, a listener whose connection gets cut and they have to reload the page, that’s a count each time. And the “live” listener numbers are going to bloated in the same way every time Skype kicks me off and I have to dial back in. In fact, last night’s show has a count of 5 just for me alone!

On the other hand, the February numbers don’t include last night’s show or archive downloads after last weekend, no less.

I greatly appreciate your listening, and I hope that you enjoy the show and the subject matter we discuss. I refuse to get all gimmicky and shit, but I do have great plans for the show. So, at Ryan and Zach’s request, we’re going to have another Round Table this week, but a slightly different format. As many of us co-hosts as are available are going to dial in Wednesday night, along with Ryan (and hopefully @AntitheistAngie). We’re going to cover a lot of hot-button topics for between us, and may or may not take callers as time permits. I’m hoping that Zach, Ryan and I can somewhat replicate our post-show discussion from last week. It got pretty interesting.

Some things we’re planning on discussing include, but are in no way limited to:

• Anti-abortion politics
• Intelligent Design education
• Free speech versus verbal masturbation
• Draw Muhammad Day
• Atheist Morality

The last topic there is a segue to next week’s show. I’m setting up an interview with Martin Pribble in regards to a recent poll on about.com which he was leading until it got pharyngulated. The poll results are now meaningless, as they do not inherently reflect the about.com readership, nor do they necessarily accurately reflect the beliefs of those who take the poll as much as they reflect the ability of poll-takers to submit the voting form several times just to make PZ Myers look more popular than he really is. Don’t get me wrong, I have much respect for the man and even consider myself a fan of his. And while online polls are inherently flawed in concept, there’s no benefit for us to prey upon each other even in the most innocuous of forms.

Last week’s show, however, was a definite “good.” Even despite Kile’s absence (and Kile, I sincerely hope your girlfriend is feeling better, and kudos to you for placing her well-being first), we had an engaging, informative show which included a lot of great discussion. I was a little tapped for resources by the end of it, which I attributed at the time to the showing lacking Kile’s input and the time such would have naturally consumed, but really, I think it was because Paul, Zach and I gave the general, overall topic of “Secularism and Humanism in Western Society a fairly decent spin.” Having Kile’s scholarly input would have been great, sure, but the rest of us are by no means slackers when it comes to being able to think and being able to discuss our thoughts.

It was truly an enjoyable time.

Towards the end of the show, Ryan (@NewYorkCreator) joined us on the air, and we started discussing several things that had to be cut off short as our allotted time ended. In fact, Ryan, Zach and I talked for almost another half-hour until Skype kicked me off again. I may take up my cable provider on the offer to “bundle” my services, including a VOIP line, for even less than what I’m currently paying. It’s funny how they work their prices, but that’s another story.

Anyway, after our post-show conversation, I’m looking to have an “enhanced” round table discussion on some very interesting topics—controversial topics, even. I’m hopeful that @AntitheistAngie can also join us next week, if she’s feeling better, because we’re going to start with Abortion Politics, and move through several other hot-button topics until we conclude with a recap on last year’s “Draw Mohammed Day”. Wouldn’t it be nice if it could be a large Round Table?

I think so.

Because, yeah, it’s getting kinda fun, and I really wouldn’t mind a little issue-advocating/vocal activism going on via the show. Nope, I wouldn’t mind that at all.

By the way, the song excerpt with which I started the show, and woefully neglected to inform my listeners about was from Civil Twilight‘s “You Will Leave a Mark.” Buy their album. They’re good kids.

I just wanted to take a little time out today to thank you all for a great month of shows (all three of them) over at Thinking Unenslaved. Our listenership is way up over the first couple of shows, and indeed way up over my old ThinkAtheist solo shows as well.

Right now, we’re doing right around 30 live listeners during each show, and just under 250 archive listeners. I’m really quite honored, although I don’t doubt the increase is due largely to the participation of my co-hosts, Paul, Zach, and Kile. Those numbers may not seem like much; I’m certainly not anywhere near the “big time,” but I greatly appreciate each and every one of you.

I’ll be posting the announcement for next for the upcoming show shortly. Thank you all again, and please spread the word! Wednesday’s show will be another round table discussion on some really interesting topics.

Thinking Unenslaved: Blog Talking

Luckily, though, thanks to the not-so-mysterious workings of my brain, my famously notorious co-hosts will probably be dialing in anyway. That’s because I’m focusing the show recent articles by some of my favorite bloggers, a couple of whom are, guess what….Paul and Kile!

Kile will start with “secularism and religion in a liberal democracy” and how that works within the framework of the Establishment Clause and Free Enterprise. This should lead to some lively discussion between the panelists, and segue’s nicely into an anecdotal discussion on the “theification” of American and British politics at all levels of government (and its accompanying deification of conservative politicians), presented by yours truly. From there, we’ll get into Paul’s topic of “teaching atheism” from the parental perspective, which will probably naturally transition on its own into any of several directions.

The expected format is for each of us to present our thoughts on our chosen topics for 5-10 minutes, followed by a round-table discussion between the panelists for another 15-20 minutes, and then take callers before moving on to the next topic. If we have no callers on a particular subject, we’ll simply move on.

I’m really excited about tonight’s show and the subjects we’ll be covering. This is a great opportunity to talk to all the co-hosts together (I *think* Zach will be there, too, I just didn’t get a topic from him and there’s plenty here to work with), so I’m hoping we’ll have some good callers with differing opinions on the subject matter.

I had a great time last night with Paul, Zach, and Kile. No, it’s not what you think, you silly perverts. We had a good (re)introductory show and talked about a few topics of interest. We didn’t really get down-and-dirty into things, but we did address some current events that were important to us. Next week, since we’re past the introductions, we’ll dig in and really get into things.

Wednesday is the day after the first Day of Ones for this eleventy-ish year (if you ignore the glaring “20″), which I suppose makes it fitting for a solo show with some very special guests. We’ll do some one-on-one conversations with persons whom I feel are influential in our world, taking on subject matter that is currently pertinent to the Atheist, Humanist, and Secularist communities. I’ll update this description with details when they’re solidified with my guests: I hope to have @Zachsmind, Paul Fidalgo, and Kile Jones with me, which, I suppose, means I should probably invite them!

Please note: “Thinking Unenslaved” is now an hour earlier: 10pm Eastern, and after a recent split vote on whether to continue on Wednesdays or switch to Sundays, I cast the tie-breaker and decided for Wednesdays. I pulled it back by an hour because I no longer dedicate Wednesday afternoons to my kids: we get to see each other frequently throughout the week, now.

of course, that doesn’t mean that i plan on doing nothing.

so, after a long struggle with two different condenser microphones, i have determined that i live in an area where AM radio frequencies are amplified to a degree that i can’t use a condenser microphone here in my condominium. i’m rather disappointed about that, as i was truly looking forward to making sure my voice was represented more realistically and not as amateurish as before. my gaming headset is pretty decent, but isn’t capable of modulating well enough to accommodate my range. several of my twitter friends have recommended that i “shield the microphone” without supplying any information on how to surround a microphone with shielding and still leave it viable for recording, and my online searches have been just as fruitless. i’m hoping that as this community which i live in grows, there will be push-back from fellow residents that the folks who run the repeater towers near here will make the necessary adjustments.

as previously discussed, i’m still planning on doing an audio-only weekly podcast, in the three formats (solo, co-hosted, round-table), and i’m working on interstitial segments for separating the various parts of these shows (primarily just so i can get a better handle on editing). i anticipate that i’ll kick off a show within the next couple of weeks. in that regard, i have an IMPORTANT QUESTION for you:

WHAT DAY/TIME SHOULD I RUN THE LIVE SHOW? (i know you can listen to it any time, but the live show should be its own form of fun, and having live participants is always better than trolling the graveyards, right? so, please reply in the comments with a day of the week and general time-frame that works for you!)

Now, as much as I love people like Thuderf00t, AntitheistAngie, ZOMGitsCriss, Zinnia Jones, The Thinking Atheist, and many others, the problem I have with YouTube is the reliance on visual cues, overlays, and the like, to communicate ideas. There’s nothing wrong with this at all (in fact, as a photographer, I naturally LOVE it), but what about the viewer or listener with too much to do to sit around watching videos? What about the person who’d like to put a podcast on while doing chores, or driving around town? To be explicit, what about the kind of person who could listen attentively, but not watch? Communications that rely on visual content to convey meaning either miss this type of listener, or the listener fails to completely benefit from the medium.

I’ve struggled with this for a long time, actually. Very early on, when I started becoming involved in the ThinkAtheist Radio Show (formerly on TalkShoe and BlogTalkRadio), I contemplated switching it to a video-format, YouTube-based show. Several things stood in the way of that (not the least of which was the lack of time), and ultimately, I was rather fond of the general format of our show: free-form, unscripted live talk. Obviously, I chose not to vary from that format.

As I said, there are a few audio podcasts that I really like: Skepchick, Skeptoid, Freethought Radio, The Atheist Experience, and others, but these also have their quirks. Freethought Radio in particular rather disappoints me: These are good, intelligent people, but the format is over-commercialized, and the participants, at least in the few shows I’ve listened to, appear to be so committed to “staying on time” and “sticking to the point” that their interviews can be stilted, one-sided, interruptive, and often have an annoying tendency to sound far more patronizing to the interviewee than informative or instructive to the audience.

To be clear, I must point out that Skepchick and Skeptoid don’t fall into the description I just gave (that was for Freethought Radio alone). I love their shows, and just wanted to make sure I linked to them.

To refrain from picking on shows from organizations that I otherwise admire, suffice it to say that I find myself in that position where I listen to something (even several somethings) and I realize the opportunities missed, the messages not delivered, the discourse left behind, and it reminds me that the emotions engendered by sitting around and noticing that could be better served by my getting off my ass and doing something about it. Not that I believe I would consistently do better, but I’d certainly try. And I’ve had much encouragement of late to do so.

As well, our guests on the old ThinkAtheist Radio Show had this interesting tendency to ask us if they could come back on for another interview, and this held true for the very short run I did with my own show. Our shows were dynamic, and a modicum of topic-wandering was not only welcome, but expected. There was no agenda for us as interviewers to keep in context: I’d have been just as happy (from a show perspective) if one of our participants suddenly announced his or her undying fealty to Jebus as I would if we had spent 60 minutes talking about his or her escape from organized religion. But the bottom line for me is that my guests enjoyed what I did well enough to ask to come back. I was obviously doing something right.

I halted my own show largely for a reason that has now resolved itself. That reason essentially boiled down to time. When I stopped the show, I was doing 12-16 hours/week at our TaeKwonDo academy, 10-18 hours/week on the soccer fields, and whatever time I could get with my children, atop a typical 40-50 hour work-week. For other health reasons, I’ve had to stop doing TaeKwonDo, and now that we’re in the winter months, soccer is only 2-8 hours/week, and I’ve already let the various administrations know that I can do as many games in the future as I’ve done in the past. I’m kind of enjoying having time to myself, and to date, and those kinds of things.

And I’ve discovered that I miss doing the show. Which is funny, because for a while there, I wasn’t missing it at all. Time works wonders, I guess.

So, at the repeated prompting of a few friends, and a general round of acceptance from the community at large, I’m reviving Synthaetic Synapse as Think Unenslaved. I’m waiting on some new equipment, and I’m setting up some intro and interstitial music, and even some commercial plugs for communities of which I’m a member and national organizations of whom I’m fond. I’m lining up some occasional co-hosts and guests, and putting a bit more organization around the show as a whole. I’ll consider reopening communications with ThinkAtheist (I re-subscribed to the site last week) and seeing if they’d like to “sponsor” the show (without pay), but I will retain my independence regardless. The show format will be very much as it always was: which means that there will be three major classifications of shows.

1. Co-hosted show: Myself and a co-host would cover international, national, and local news related to the atheist/agnostic/freethought community as a whole. The topics selected will lead to discussion between the two hosts. We’ll limit that segment to approximately one hour, and have similar material prepared for the second hour should callers not fill up the second segment.

2. Solo show: This is where I diatribe on one subject or another for a while (this may either be live or in a pre-recorded/edited/prepared format and replayed). Related to that subject, I’ll have a live guest or two with subject-matter expertise on that and related topics. This segment will last 60-90 minutes, with an open-phones segment at the end.

3. Round-table show: This is a pure round-table format, possibly with a co-host/moderator, and with multiple (3-4) guests on hot-button topics of interest. The round table will spend 15-20 minutes per topic on up to six topics, taking callers for one or two questions during each segment, and solving all the world’s problems in a single two-hour show.

I anticipate kicking off the new show over the first weekend of December, 2010. Check back on this site for updates over the next few weeks, and be sure to follow my Twitter and Facebook posts for show times and additional information. I’ll continue to run the show from it’s current location at Blog Talk Radio, but un:enslaved will serve up supplemental information, associated content, the show archive, and those types of things too.

i haven’t done a broadcast in a while, now. no one seems to miss it, and i’m not sure i do, either. i haven’t found anything insightful to say, nor have i found anything of seeming importance to promote. i haven’t been looking incredibly hard, either, though. i’ve been distracted.

i retreated into the online world years ago, completely by my own choice, and with specific intent, because up here, the inherent overlayment of impermanence and superficiality is transparently obvious, unlike the “real” world, where it all gets skewed and twisted somewhere out of sight before you ever get to see it coming, let alone recognize it for what it is. i can handle the bullshit up here because the bullshit is immediate, obvious, and usually very direct. real life is usually something different, or at least it has been.

but now, all of the sudden, life in my real world has become something both more and less than what it was for me, for so many years. the simple expedient of having someone interested in me–even demandingly so, sometimes–has changed everything. i’m actually having to think about how to better use my time, how to take care of myself for more than just the obvious reasons, how to learn to love again. it’s not something i ever really expected, even when i ended a marriage for lack of anything resembling mutual, interpersonal concern.

it’s different at this age, the falling in love thing, but yes, she’s keeping me away from you, my friends, and while i miss you, there’s just no contest there. i’m not so needful of attention that i couldn’t survive without her and her impact on my life, but by the same token, she’s here, she wants to share my time, and i want to give it to her. so, i wonder how many of you are like me, spending so much time on the internet, waiting/hoping/searching for something better to come along. yes, my prolific tweeting and occasional blogging have largely been escape mechanisms, i’ll admit it.

underneath all that, there has been some discussion of late about my morality. this is a laughable thing to me because of how little anyone online actually knows me, what i do in life, the communities i serve, and the people with whom i’m interconnected. somehow, it was deemed inappropriate of me to look for a relationship after i had ended a marriage that had been loveless for over a decade. somehow, for me, it was wrong to pursue those relationships via twitter while also using twitter to simply interact with people and learn more about the world around me and the people in it. somehow, i became anathema for actually taking the time, trouble, and expense to meet some of those potential relationship partners and deciding after some consideration that we weren’t compatible that way. in fact, i am apparently morally bankrupt for having done such things, despite the fact that i maintain good relations with those people, except for the one who bailed out of meeting me after i’d driven for 16 hours to meet her.

yeah, people’s definition of “morality” is pretty whack, and that’s true even amongst us freethinkers. i must have been the only person in the world drawn to other people via our interactions on twitter.

puh-lease.

then, i had to go make things worse and take loud, public exception to what i perceived to be the desire for the touchy-feely version of humanism to operate as a trump-card to all other forms of interaction freethinkers may have with the deluded. i handled the situation immaturely, apologized for it several times in several different media, and still, i’m the bad guy not just because i temporarily lost my head in an argument, but because i disagreed with someone who has more twitter followers than i do. funny thing is, that person and i were able to see through it and past it, and carry on being friends. it’s just some of her followers who seem compelled to continue “protecting” her on her unasked behalf, or who make entertaining, loud noises as they unfollow me.

which brings me to the last thing i wanted to say today. for all the shit i’ve been going through in the past year, it continues to amaze me to near speechlessness, the amount of willfully ignorant fools we have in our “ranks” as atheists and freethinkers: people who have really only effectively traded one adamant belief system for another. i received more rude, threatening and demonstrably unthinking tirades from fellow “freethinkers” due to the altercation i mentioned in the paragraph above than i have ever received from theists responding to something provocative i’ve posted in the past. these people (and you probably know who you are) serve to remind me that it is the simple human condition which is the overriding factor to everything we do, and within that human condition, intelligence has by no means been necessary, let alone an exclusive requisite, to the survival of this species or any of its individuals.

but yes, my friends, some wear the label of “freethinker” inappropriately: embarrassingly, ruefully, depressingly inappropriately.

ugh.

of course, aside from the accidental duplicity, there’s really nothing wrong with that. it’s part of what being human is about. perhaps “freethinker” can be a label that some people wear as an aspiration: something to work towards. a silver lining on the clouds of a bullshit reality which they may, indeed, someday take hold of to reshape themselves.

was that touchy-feely enough for you? probably not. o well.

at any rate, as with every autumn, my real-world life takes me away from here. and this woman with whom i’m falling in love is an additional, highly welcome distraction in whom i already find comfort and release (and that’s….refreshingly scary). i miss my frequent interactions with you, my friends, but there is no contest in the consideration of whether or not this is right for me. we’re two fiercely independent people who somehow manage to complete each other in all the right ways despite our insistence on our respective independence. there’s no way for me to describe how attractive that is to me, and so far, it’s working out beyond any expectation i might have been inclined to have.

if my past is any valid comparison, i expect what you’ll see is a bit more focused input from me in the future weeks and months. i’ll be using this internet thing a little more responsibly, which is to say, not as much, because i’m actually not trying to evade my reality any more.

and that, my friends, is a very, very good thing.

The situation with that person goes far deeper than what was exemplified on Twitter, and it has thus been difficult for me to let it go on that level as well. I’m not going to bring that in the discussion tonight, but since that little confluence of actions has led to a minor separation between some of us on Twitter, I think that ideological separation is a valid subject to broach here.

Luckily, I’d already invited Kile Jones on tonight’s show. I can’t think of a better, more thoughtful and considerate person with whom to discuss these matters. So, following on a little bit from last week’s show on Humanism, Secularism, and Atheism, Kile and I will be discussing the potential dangers in all three of those philosophical approaches, and hopefully, we’ll talk about some strategies for those of us with different approaches to our interactions with Theists and Religionists. My discussions with Kile are always insightful, and I dare say even inspirational. I’ve managed to swing all the way from being a bit reticent to do a show tonight, to being completely stoked. I look forward to a great time with Kile, and those of you who choose to dial in!

I guess, if anything, I simply got tired to playing the Bullshit Game. That gets capital letters because it’s that game you have to play when almost everything in your life is bullshit. At least the job’s okay. ;-/

I’ve left ThinkAtheist and started my own show, as indicated by the introductory episode last Wednesday night. My plan is to use this new show to branch into some other aspects of free thinking beyond Atheism, to include Humanism and Secularism: two very misused and woefully misunderstood concepts. I plan on having some guests, and former participants of the old show will still be coming around to my new place to participate from time to time.

Moving forward with life, things have changed here locally, and my online empire expands slowly but inexorably towards the ultimate goal of controlling all WTF molecules on the Internet.

Also, I thought it might be fun if I figure out how to fix the problem with all the missing images from the old posts up here. Luckily, in their absence, there’s so much entertaining text! Yay! Win!

that having been said, i set this blog back up to at least serve as a reference point for our radio shows over at thinkatheist.com. so, throughout this weekend, i’ll be linking up individual shows from our new digs at blogtalkradio.com. i’ll also be seeing what i can do to preserve the old shows that we did over at talkshoe.com, either importing that RSS feed or something so that they’ll still be available after iTunes drops them for lack of input. and speaking of iTunes, i’ll be looking into what i can do to get our new radio show registered with iTunes as well.
