The objective of “Smart Coast AI solutions for tourism 4.0” is to develop a new range of products and services based on artificial intelligence aligned with the RIS3 priority of “Intelligent tourism leadership: Improving the competitiveness and productivity of tourism in Canarias”.

The new products and services that the project aims to bring to the market include important  innovations in science (e.g. new AI methods related to automatic scene interpretation and content preparation), technology (e.g. edge & cloud computing solutions to address distance related challenges and allow stricter data privacy and security in agreement with Europe´s General Data Protection Regulation) and marketing (e.g. the design of new marketing communication tools to support private and public institutions in their needs), thus increasing the visibility, profitability and consolidation of the services offered to tourism and helping shape an attractive new digital image of the destination.

The activities of the project are carried out in Mogan Municipality inside the “Smart Coast AI Lab for tourism”, a R+D ecosystem created back in 2020 with the leadership of QAISC, with participation of ANFI DEL MAR and RADISSON BLU and with participation of our scientific group. The four partners share the vision of shaping a new value proposition under the brand “Smart Coast AI Solutions for intelligent tourism” and have a measurable impact and success in promoting the facilities of the partners.

The project has started in July 2021 and will go until October 2022 with the support of the Ministry of Economy, Knowledge and Employment of the Canary Government.

The paper, Framework for Statistical Nonlocal Means Noise Reduction in PolSAR Data, was presented in the recently celebrated IGARSS 2021. This is a joint work of researchers of CTIM, Dr. Kie Wu (Schoolof Computer Science, Shhanxi Normal University, China) and Prof. Alejandro Frery (School of Mathematics and Statistics, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand).

IGARSS (International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium) conference, has been celebrated n Brussels (Belgium), 16-17 July, and it is considered as one of the most important conferences in Geoscience and Remote Sensing.

The new network will be at the same time an essential element of the new AI SOLUTIONS BLUE ECONOMY LAB which PLOCAN, QAISC and our research center have started and which aims at developing and delivering in the near future a disrupting portfolio of AI solutions for the maritime safety & security, marine renewable energy, autonomous navigation and aquaculture sector. 

The coastal camera system is also part of the proposal that PLOCAN and QAISC have presented jointly to PORTS 4.0 which is the corporate open innovation model adopted by the Spanish State Port Authorities to attract, support and facilitate the application of talent and entrepreneurship to the Spanish public and private ports sector, within the context of 4th industrial revolution.

LIDAR (Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging) technology is an optic remote sensing technique, based on infrared laser light pulses emitted over a surface that, depending on the elapsed time to return the transmitter, allows defining the exact coordinates (x,y,z) of a dense point-cloud of the surface.

Processing such a point-cloud, from LIDAR data, it is possible to obtain a tridimensional model of the surface which elements can be characterized, as well as to identify discontinuities or incongruous elements.

The point cloud provided by LIDAR data comprises, apart from (x,y,z) coordinates, other additional features of such points. Nevertheless, to determine an image over the scanned surface, it is necessary to process LIDAR data by using information systems that allow recognizing each one of the elements on such a surface.

In this regard, the service provided by the Imaging Technology Center (CTIM) is twofold. On the one hand, it involves the development of custom solutions that, based on Artificial Intelligence systems, allows to analyze and process LIDAR data, considering the type of application on which this technology has been used. And, on the other hand, the development of applications for the visualization and representation of the tridimensional models reconstructed from the processing of such data, obtaining a virtual image of the scanned element.
