Guided Imagery during Cancer Treatment

Imagery is the most fundamental language we have. Everything we do is processed through images. The technique of guided imagery is based on the idea that the mind can affect the functions of the body. Guided imagery has been found to be effective in managing stress, anxiety, depression, pain, and the side effects of chemotherapy such as nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. These practices can also promote healing and support patients during complex treatment programs and procedures. In this seminar by Pauline Beggs, RN, you will experience firsthand the powers of guided imagery and learn tools to take with you through your cancer journey and beyond.
Translating Technology into Cost-Effective Healthcare

Biomedical researchers have always focused on improving healthcare. They have been fantastically successful in that effort, but little consideration has been given to reducing the cost of cutting-edge techniques and therapies. We know that our researchers can solve tough challenges. Now, it’s time to focus on making healthcare accessible and sustainable by lowering the cost of care.

This conference brings together industry and academic leaders in healthcare technology and policy. Participation is by invitation only. The conference will be simulcast to provide worldwide viewing of the speaker presentations and conference discussion sessions.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ucsf/event-calendar/~4/53-G2fbVtf4" height="1" width="1"/>

Transgender Day of Remembrance 2009: “Diagnosing Difference”

In the new documentary “Dianosing Difference,” 13 diverse transgender people—most of them prominent San Francisco activists—discuss how it feels to have their gender identity labeled by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a “gender identity disorder.” Using the diagnosis as a departure point, the interviewees debunk myths about transgender identities, challenge stereotypical gender expectations, and offer insights into the terms and language used to describe transgender lives. This groundbreaking film is the first to explore the impact of the GID diagnosis on people who identify on the trans spectrum in their own words and images.
