Description

This project was initiated in response to the ethnographer-led removal of the unique and remarkable Yuquot Whalers’ Shrine, taken from Nootka Island in 1904 and housed in the basement of the American Museum of Natural History since. Whether and how the Shrine is repatriated raises complex questions for the Mowachaht/Muchalaht Community that will take time to answer. But other promising initiatives have emerged during conversations, including the territorial marking project illustrated here.

VanPlay Smart City Talks: ECOLOGY + NATURE

Imagine Parks and Recreation – What could Vancouver’s parks, public space and recreation opportunities look like in 25 years? How about 100 years?

In the third lecture of this series, we explore the ecological and environmental sustainability dimensions of parks and public spaces in urban environments with two leading experts and a moderated Q&A:

Opening speaker: Melina Scholefield, P. Eng, Manager, Green Infrastructure Implementation, City of Vancouver

Keynote speaker: Steven Apfelbaum, Senior Ecologist, Founder & Chairman of Applied Ecological Services

Bios:

Steven Apfelbaum is an international scientific expert and a leading ecological consultants in the US. His work provides insight and design solutions at the intersection of ecological systems and developed land uses. In recent years he has worked closely with hydrologists to understand landscape-scale hydrologic changes associated with land settlement in the Midwestern U.S.,with direct application to many hundred millions of acres in North America and elsewhere.

Apfelbaum’s latest book, “Restoring Ecological Health to Your Land” (Island Press) and his personal account of thirty years of restoring their Wisconsin farm, in “Natures Second Chance” (Beacon press) have received a range of awards and rave reviews from the New York Times and other publications. The later book has been recognized as one of the top ten environmental books of 2009 and also best books for people to personally learn about what they can do to address climate change. Apfelbaum teaches at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and holds adjunct professorships and lectureships at several other universities.

In addition, Apfelbaum was named a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America this past February.

---

Melina is a professional engineer with a long-standing dedication to sustainability and innovation in the municipal sector, leadership development and collaboration across disciplines. Melina is Manager of Green Infrastructure Implementation for the City of Vancouver. She and her team are responsible for developing an implementation plan for the City’s ambitious Rain City Strategy: A green infrastructure and urban rainwater management initiative.

Prior to taking on this new role, Melina was engaged in the private sector in the field of green buildings, both as a construction management consultant and a Built Green certified residential builder with a special interest in passive house design and construction methods. Previously, Melina worked nearly 11 years with the City of Vancouver. As Manager of the City’s Sustainability Group, Melina’s portfolio included advancing the Greenest City goals as well as climate protection, renewable energy, climate change adaptation, green building programs, employee sustainable commuting programs and sustainable City operations for the 2010 Olympics. She also spent nearly eight years in the Transportation Division, where she developed expertise in community engagement, integrated land use and transportation planning and sustainable transportation.

Get your tickets here

The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is developing Vancouver’s Playbook, a new master plan to guide the delivery of vibrant parks and recreation over the next 25 years. As part of this process, The VanPlay Smart City Talks series will bring together some of the world’s leading thinkers on public space and urban issues to engage in a dialogue with Vancouver residents. This series will explore big ideas and interesting insights on the way we connect, play, and explore in cities.

Organized in partnership with Urbanarium and the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation.

Sponsored by PWL PARTNERSHIP LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS INC., and the Leslie Van Duzer SALA Legacy Fund established with a generous gift from an anonymous SALA alumnus.

There are many ways to skin a cat, or a city for that matter. Faculty and associates of the UBC SALA present five provocative and playful perspectives on Vancouver. The series takes you from imagined futures past and present, to the giant sulphur pile in Vancouver Harbour; from the 15th floor of the landmark Electra Building, to the East Side and some of the toniest neighbourhoods in the region. Come experience Vancouver through new eyes.

Seeing is believing

SALA students travel to Stockholm to view and document their surroundings

Although it’s not mandatory, SALA students are encouraged to venture far away from UBC’s Vancouver campus while enrolled in a study abroad course. This summer, Professor Leslie Van Duzer took a group of 23 students to Stockholm, Sweden, to expand their design horizons.

Professor Van Duzer believes that witnessing architecture firsthand enriches educational experiences for SALA students: “You can see all the slides of a building, but there’s no replacement for seeing a building or city in person.”

Her course, Stockholm S, M, L, XL (cross-listed as ARCH 538E and ENDS 482J) took interested students to Stockholm because the city offers a unique perspective on the intersection of social values, planning policy, and the relationship between landscape and architecture through “the use of landscape as infrastructure, the design of intimately scaled architecture, and innovation fabrication technologies,” she said.

The course was offered in tandem with another course taught by renowned architectural photographer, Michael Perlmutter. That course, Stockholm Through the Lens (ARCH 538F and ENDS 482K) focuses on the craft of architectural photography. It gives students the opportunity to enrich their understanding of the fundamental issues regarding the representation of architecture through firsthand photography experience.

Riley was one of the students who travelled to Stockholm. He appreciated a mix of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning was built into the course. “This approach allowed us to learn about more than just famous buildings,” he said. “We were able to learn about the whole picture, about how each facet is connected and how essential each part is.”

“It was a fantastic and eye opening experience,” Riley said.

Alexander also valued the opportunity of traveling overseas to learn about the built environment. From Michael Perlmutter’s course, he learned six fundamental lessons about architectural photography: “Don’t obstruct the subject, everything should have a rationale, don’t get cute, lighting is everything, proper cropping is essential, and convey context.”

This is the first time that a course in professional architectural photography has been offered as a Study Abroad course. At the end of the course, students presented a series of images from one of their photography projects. Early this semester, some of these photos were put on display in the lobby of the Frederic Lasserre building.

Imagine Parks and Recreation – What could Vancouver’s parks, public space and recreation opportunities look like in 25 years? How about 100 years? Our second lecture of this series delves into spatial distribution, access and equity dimensions of parks and public spaces with two speakers and a moderated Q&A:

Opening Speaker: Aaron Licker on using GIS to investigate cities

Keynote Speaker: Kurt Culbertson on environmental and spatial justice

Kurt Culbertson is Chairman and CEO of Design Workshop, an urban design, land planning, and landscape architecture firm with offices in Aspen, Colorado, and nine other cities. Mr. Culbertson is a former Fulbright scholar, and a fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the American Institute of Certified Planners, the Urban Design Forum, and Dumbarton Oaks. He has received 35 national and state awards for his work. Culbertson’s most recent work focuses upon the application of historical ecology to the challenges of shrinking cities and in the application of theories of patch dynamics in establishing an ecology of cities. He is also currently working to raise awareness of environmental justice issues within the profession.
