I am happy to say I have been included in the circle of talented artists of the wonderful group Spooky Time Jingles. This group was founded by Dani Nelson of Ambitious Designs and shows off the creative talents of artists creating Halloween and Christmas designs.

I am excited to be a member of this group because I have gradually been returning to my Halloween and Christmas figures and these talented artists certainly inspire me. The Great Mississippi River Balloon Race of 2009

As some of you know, every year I post about the Balloon Race held in October each year. Our family always gets together for a wondrful week-end of good food, relaxation and just being together while watching the balloons drifting overhead and over the Mississippi River while we sit high on the bluffs of Natchez. But, unfortunately, my husband and I became sick and had to cancel our participation...he developed bronchitis and I have pneumonia with asthma....however we did bundle up Sunday morning and rode to a site where the balloon pilots would be trying to hit a target on the ground with their bean bags. The weather was beautiful and the wind was apparently just right, so I managed to get some really good pictures........here they are with no commentary...just look and enjoy the beauty of these magnificant balloons.

I have known that typepad was in the process of changing their format to a new and better way of blogging; but, I was certainly not ready....I left for vacation several weeks ago and when I returned the first thing I did was start a new post for the Halloween Party and immediately realized that this was not the old familiar blog I was use to...after much fumbling, I managed to finally get something published...but, last night, I decided to really explore the new features and this morning when I logged in, my Halloween Part post was gone...I guess somewhere along the way I managed to delete the post. I really am in no mood to try and reconstruct that post..........soooo, boggers, all I can say is...have fun and maybe I will eventually get my act together......

This tiny 5" figure is sculpted from paper clay and puppen fimo and painted with acrylics. He has handmade eyes and dyed mohair for hair. I gave him a beaded and glittered "boo" sign to hold and a 2"x 2" base to rest on. He is the result of a challenge the Etsy ADO girls were having. (Art Dolls Only group).

Halloween Pumpkin Heads in Wonderland

Well, here we go again with another series. This one will be : "Halloween Pumpkin Heads in Wonderland". I am so inspired after seeing Alice and her buddies back in the news again with that fabulous Johnny Depp playing the Mad Hatter. So, here is the first in this series,namely, The Mad Hatter. My Hatter is a 6" figure, but with that hat he comes to a stately 7.5". With all the sculpting on this piece I used paper clay and puppen fimo and ended up having to paint the entire piece....and painting is not my strong suit. Anyway, all of these figures will be pumpkin heads, so this should be interesting. Soooo, here is #1.

Halloween Black Kat and Mouse Pull Toy

Check out the Kat and Mouse riding on the pull toy, except this pull toy does not have wheels that turn. They are riding on E-bay right now. The Harvest Moon was put in because of a Harvest Moon Howl Challenge that EHAG was having....he brightened things up a bit.

This is another small piece...I am really enjoying sculpting the 5" and 6" figures. The Kat is 6" and is sculpted from an air dry clay and puppen fimo over a strong wire armature; the mouse is sculpted from puppen fimo and so is the moon. They have all been painted and sealed for longevity and I crackled the cart to give it that vintage patina look.

When I started out sculpting, Halloween and Christmas pieces were my favorite things to create...but, somewhere along the way I gradually dropped them and went into the fantasy world of faeries and mermaids. Lately I have gradually been creating some Halloween pieces and have really enjoyed it. A Girl Named Rachel

For those of us who create art work, we do it for our own pleasure, for money, to please other people and to satisfy our muse. Once in a while someone comes along who is very special and makes what we do special...at least I hope so. I have a collector who has a daughter named Rachel with hazel eyes and blonde hair and who was born with a rare genetic disease...so far there is no cure..Rachel has to go to a Mayo Clinic for care and her mother asked me to do a Mother Angel to give to Rachel's doctor. The report from my collector states, "the Doctor loves the Angel and put it where all could see her... she is now welcoming many children and adults at the Mayo Clinic with her kind face and raised hand". That touches my heart.

I hope that a cure will eventually be found for Rachel and all of those who suffer from this particular disease.

Halloween Ole Bones

Ole Bones is a 6" figure sculpted from paper clay and porcelain pupen fimo over a wire armature. I dressed him in white gauze dipped into paverpol and sprinkled with glass glitter. He has three sculpted skulls hanging from his waist and two transparent mushrooms along side of him. What is with the mushrooms? you ask. Well, I love mushrooms...yes I do. Therefore,this is a series called "Mushroom Forest Holiday People" and Ole Bones is #4.

This Tiny Vampire is #3 in my series "Mushroom Forest Holiday People". She is a 6" figure sculpted from paper clay and porcelain puppen fimo with hand-made eyes and a black jet beaded cap. I dressed her in hand-dyed silk gauze and silk net with a little glitter. Her wings are made from wire and muslin painted black and are slightly poseable. She stands on a wooden base painted black with an overlay of silver leaf. She has been placed in my Etsy store and is for sale.

Witchiepoo is #2 in my "Mushroom Forest Halloween People". The Pumpkinhead is #1. Both of these pieces are on Etsy for sale.

Witchiepoo is a 6" figure sculpted from paper clay and Porcelain puppen fimo. I dressed her in white gauze with lots of glass glitter to brighten up her tiny ugly face. The mushrooms were sculpted from puppen fimo and have a translucent look about them. She holds a fimo pumpkin filled with iridescent beads and stands on a wooden base that has been crackled and has a few bats and spiders flying and crawling on it. The base is 2"x2" and the entire piece is 9". AND HERE SHE IS..............

Oh, by the way, she will be entered in the ADO Quarterly Challenge. I plan on following up with a vampire....will try to freak people out with this scary figure..........ha,ha,ha.....I have never be able to make a figure really scary........we shall see.

Fairy Tale Princess

My new Fairy Tale Princess is a 9" figure sculpted from Porcelain Puppen Fimo with arms and legs that are slightly poseable. Her bodice is sculpted from translucent fimo with gold leaf and she is dressed in hand dyed silk gauze and silk ribbons. I just happened to have some mohair that matched her costume and I placed a handmade beaded piece on her head to set it off. Her wings are mixed media inspired by a class I took with that fabulous Jean Bernard. She sits on a wood base decorated with brass findings and beautiful iridescent beads. Another monochromatic costume........what can I say...it is what I do; and this fairy was definitely inspired by the golden mermaid.

New Halloween Pumpkinhead

Don't have a name for this fellow yet, except Pumpkinhead....He was suppose to be 5" and instead ended up being 6"; as I have said before, these little fellows have a mind of their own. I sculpted him from Creative paper clay and painted him with acrylics. His cap is made from heavy paper and decorated with string and decorative trim and then sprinkled with a little glitter, of course, and painted. He has a black crepe paper collar and the lantern is made from honeycomb crepe paper. The mushrooms were sculpted from apoxie clay. I am thinking of starting a series with this piece....maybe a series called the "Mushroom Forest"....I love mushrooms...we shall see.

Tiny Halloween Bat Girl

This little Bat Girl is only 5" and a total of 6" with her headdress. When she stands on the stand the entire piece is 8.5".   So much fun and certainly something new for me to sculpt that tiny. She is sculpted from Rose Puppen Fimo and dressed in dyed silk gauze.   Her wings are fantasy film with lots of glitter....must do more of these tiny pieces for Halloween....

Golden Mermaid/ ADO 4 Elements Challenge

I so enjoyed every minute of creating this mermaid. She is a 9" figure sculpted from Rose Puppen Fimo with a tail of gold leaf...While I was sculpting her, Jean Bernard started an on-line fairy wing class....and I became so excited and decided to use her method to create the fins and tail fin for my mermaid. Jean always gets me excited with all of her wonderful creative teaching classes..in order to see what Jean is up to check out her blog and also wander over and see more beautiful work and classes on her website .

I had more fun using so many of my baubles, beads and baroque pearls on this figure and the stand.

Lunar Goddess

The Lunar Goddess is complete after having two heads sculpted and two sets of wings made, she finally came together. She is a 9" figure sculpted from Porcelain puppen fimo and stands on a mosaic stand. I dressed her in silk gauze and Venice lace and made her last set of wings from Fantasy film on a wire armature which was painted with 3-D Crystal Lacquer and sprinkled with micro glass beads. She has beautiful while mohair for her hair and her headdress is made of antique silver wire leaves. She will fly to E-bay tomorrow.

Lunar Goddess WIP

This is my first piece since we returned from vacation...it took me awhile to get back into the groove of sculpting. I would come into the studio and just stare at everything, not sure what to do next. I have been wanting to try something different with the armature and after I finally got started, I was so engrossed in the new method that I sculpted the body before the head....I usually sculpt the head first...so the Goddess has no head at the present time. I sculpted her from porcelain puppen fimo to get that mystic white look.

Her base is made of apoxie clay and mosaic tiles along with some pieces of mirror tiles...it is suppose to represent the moon. I love working with mosaics and sometimes I think I should stop sculpting and spend time doing mosaic projects.

Westeria at Biltmore

I decided since I took so many pictures of the gorgeous Wisteria at the Biltmore estate that I would show just those pictures in this post. I have NEVER seen such long blooms as were on some of these vines....and smell good...oh my goodness....soooo sweet. As you will see by the size of the trunks on these vines, they have been around for a very long time.

We took a week's vacation along with my sister and her husband and traveled to Asheville, North Carolina. The drive from Mississippi to North Carolina was beautifull with views of the mountains and dogwood in full bloom and quaint little towns along the wayside. Our destination was to visit the magnificant home "Biltmore" built by George Washington Vanderbilt,III. We were not allowed to take pictures inside the home, but could take pictures anywhere on the grounds consisting of 8000 acres. I have divided my posts into two...one will be pictures of the exterior of the home showing the limestone carvings of statues and gargoyles. The stone cutters were the highest paid of all the construction workers when Biltimore was built. My second post will be pictures of the grounds and beautiful flowers.





Pierrot is Finished

The Pierrot is an 8" full body sculpt from Porcelain Puppen Fimo. I dressed her in white silk and hand dyed some of it for a contrast. Antique jet beading was used for her head piece and also for the center of the flower on her hat and the flower accent on the back of her costume. She has hand painted glass eyes with real eyelashes. I must say, I really had fun sculpting the mandolin from paper clay and was pleased with the final piece. The base is a combination of apoxie clay, mosaic tiles and velvet.

A Mini Spring Tour

Not much going on out in the yard and garden right now with the exception of the Amaryllis blooming. Today we planted periwinkle to add some color for summer, although most of them were white; there I go again, with a monochromatic theme, the same I do with my sculptures. If there were such a thing as a beige flower I would probably plant it.....boy, my back hurts from bending over so much. Anyway, here are a few pictures I took while wondering around with the camera.

The Banana Fiscata has green leaves all year and in the Spring these wonderful flowers appear that smell similar to a banana and it is intoxicating.

The Sweet Olive also have geen leaves all year and these tiny white flowers have a wonderful fragrance that tends to surround you leaving you to wonder where it came from. It blooms off and on from Spring into the Fall.

August Fern putting out new fronds that are copper colored now, but will eventually turn green.

A whirly-gig high on a metal pole that was made by a member of the Mississippi Craftsman's Guild (of which I am a member)

A statue of an angel protected by an old tub which has been sunk into the ground. I plan to mosaic the tub this summer....

A Redheaded Woodpecker working on his new home on top of a telephone pole.

The wonderful Martins who return every year to use our house to mate and have babies. Their constant chattering is really missed when they leave in July.

Spring Amaryllis

We must have about 30 amaryllis planted in our back yard garden and some of them are beginning to bloom. I wish that I had kept the names of each flower, but I did not, so all I know is red, white, multi-color. Most of them were ordered as bulbs from nurseries and others were purchased at Christmas time in full bloom. There is nothing any prettier than to have a blooming amaryllis during Christmas. As they continue to bloom I will add more pictures.

Mother Angel

The Mother Angel is now complete. She is a 12" full body sculpt from Rose Puppen Fimo over a very strong wire armature. I dressed her in antique silk velvet and beautiful embroidered lace from England.   She has glass eyes, real eyelashes and gorgeous white mohair for her hair. She stands on a base created with mosaic tiles and apoxie clay. She will be going to a very special place and after I check with the collector, I will tell more about it.





The Angel and The Pierrot

I am working on two pieces at the same time which is unusual for me. But, I have a commission I must finish before May..The Angel which will go to a wonderful collector who has a great idea for the Angel's destination...more about that later. I will show the base for the Angel which is made from apoxie clay and mosaic tiles..I am really pleased the way it turned out..as for the Angel, she is waiting for some English embroidered lace which is actually on its way from England... she will make her appearance later.

The Pierrot is a piece I had started when I enrolled in an on line class with Marilyn Radzat called Crowning Glories. If you are interested in taking this class or actually any of her wonderful classes, please go to her blog and check it out. Anyway, I decided since I had already started the Pierrot, I would apply some of Marilyn's techniques to the Pierrot's cap...sooo, I took some antique Jet black beading I had and covered her black cap....I still have more to do, but this is a start.   The Pierrot is playing a mandolin...she is also waiting for her costume. More later.

Shakespeare Challenge

I belong to a group on Etsy called Art Dolls Only or ADO. Check them out because there are many very talented artists in this group and they all create Art Dolls.   They have started a Shakespeare Challenge whereby you can create any character from his body of work.  This was a hard decision since there are so many wonderful characters; but,  for quite some time now, I have had a sketch (laughing, I do not draw very well, but I understood it) of Romeo and Juliet that I have been putting on the back burner. So, this challenge was the incentive to create this piece that has been haunting me.

I sculpted busts of the lovers and put them on top of a mosaic stand. They are sculpted from Puppen Fimo with a wash of burnt umber and wrapped with a piece of dyed silk gauze dipped into Paverpol. Their stand is a combination of mosaic tiles, stone and beads. The entire piece is 12" tall and can be found in my Etsy Store



Sweet Pumpkin Head

Here she is!! A very Sweet Pumpkin Head...I had fun with this one. She is sculpted from Premier Paper Clay with the exception of her hands and I sculpted them from Puppen Fimo.   I have no idea why I was having so much trouble with the paper clay while trying to sculpt the hands...after about 3 attempts, I threw all of them away and switched to the fimo. Her skirt and neck ruffle are dyed silk gauze dipped into Paverpol to give them some body. She has hand painted jasper beads for her eyes and her base is sculpted from Apoxie Clay. I may do some more of these for Halloween, but I think I will go back to the fimo.

This and That....My attention this past week has been all about taking care of my husband who has been in the hospital and was diagnosed with cholecystitis and finally had to have a cholecystectomy. Unfortunately the laparoscopic surgery was not successful and an open cholecystectomy had to be performed which will take longer to recuperate. The good news is....he is doing fine and it is good to be home.

And a little of this........

Yellow and Bronze pansies around the fountain brighten up a rather dull yard this time of year.

These yellow Johnny Jump-ups are on steps outside my studio door and smell so good.

And a little of that......

Here is a small 8" figure sculpted from paper clay I was working on when my husband became so sick. She started out to be one thing and ended up being a sweet little pumpkin head....Lots more work to be done on her, but I think I like the way she is turning out...Maybe while he is recuperating I can take some time in the studio and finish her.

The Multi-tasking Kat

Here is a multi-tasking Kat, requested by a collector. She wanted a Kat that could celebrate different holidays and here he is!!!     He has a Flag, Pumpkin, Candy Canes, Shamrock and Easter Eggs....for every day he has a fish. I also made him a little box to hold his treasures when they are not in use. The Kat and his accessories were all sculpted from paper clay and the Kat was crackled and antiqued to give him that warm patina seen in Folk Art pieces. His treasure box was painted and crackled to match him...............

Melody

Melody has arrived with her flower flute. She is an 8" full body sculpt from Puppen Fimo with the exception of her arms which can be posed. She is dressed in dyed lace and silk gauze with hand painted glass eyes and dyed tibetan wool for her hair. Her flute is also sculpted from Puppen Fimo and painted. The base has copper colored mosaic glass tiles and leaves and mushrooms sculpted from Apoxie Clay. Her wings are mixed media and really glow and shine. This tiny fae will fly to E-bay tonight.

Father Time is complete

The Steampunk Father Time is now finished and resting on E-bay. This figure is 12"with a strong wire armature, soft torso and sculpted hands, feet and head from Puppen Fimo.   I dressed him in hand dyed silk velvet and antique lace. Using all the watch parts was really a challenge but loads of fun. His base was painted and crackled to give it a warm patina and I placed an image of a sun dial on the base that says : "Grow Old Along With Me The Best Is Yet To Be"

Steam Punk Father Time

What is Steam Punk?? A very brief description would be.."a style that refers to a time when steam power was used". But, instead of trying to explain it any further just google "Steam Punk" and you will be pleasantly surprised at all the wonderful creations.

I am making an attempt to incorporate this style into my new Father Time. I have some watch parts that I am trying to use in a creative way. Here are some preview pictures.

Santa Claus

This Santa is my final commission piece for 2008. He is 16" tall and stands on a mosaic base of iridescent Italian tiles. He is dressed in satin, silk and velvet with gorgeous lamb's wool for his hair and beard. He has a soft body over a strong wire armature with head, breast plate, hands and shoes sculpted from Rose Puppen Fimo. This one fell together beautifully with no problems...he was a joy to make.

Midnight Fairy

A new fairy has appeared and her name is Midnight Fairy. She is a 9" full body sculpt from Porcelain Puppen Fimo and dressed in silk gauze with gray mohair for her hair, hand painted eyes and antique lace painted silver. Her wings are made of Archival tissue paper, painted and glittered. She stands on a handmade mosaic base. As with all of my figures, she is One of a Kind (OOAK).

Fall in the Garden

I always take a walk in our garden during the change of seasons and take pictures. This year the leaves are unusually beautiful as they turn to their golden colors and fall to the ground. We have planted yellow and bronze pansies this year and they seem to like their new home. The leaves from the river birch are falling so fast it is hard to keep them cleaned up; but, in a way they are lovely left alone as they pile up in flower beds and container. As I grow older I seem to become more nostalgic as I see statues, pots and other decorative items in the garden develop a wonderful aged patina.

The two pumpkins on the bottom were named Cinderella's Coach

The bird bath is filling up with leaves as she holds up her skirt

The little frog sings as he sits among the leaves

This regal hare stands guard over the garden

And this old suit of armor guards the tool house

While this tiny angel bows her head in prayer

And St. Francis stands peacefully

A metal humming bird flutters in the cedars

Glorious golden leaves

A windchime softly plays its tune

FOLK ART HARE

The Folk Art Hare takes me back to my roots when I first started sculpting Folk Art Holiday pieces out of paper clay. I have decided since I have set up a shop on Etsy I will try to put a paper clay piece on there when I am hit with the desire to create with paper clay.

This Folk Art Hare has grown a beard and placed a sack on his back so he can play Santa Claus. Of course he placed carrots in the sack, so I am not sure if those are for him or someone else. He is also carrying a pumpkin bucket with eyeballs in it for Halloween...I call them eyeballs, but they are really tiny iridescent glass beads. Hanging from his left paw is a watch to help him keep track of the time.

I sculpted this figure from paper clay and painted it with acrylics, crackled it and antiqued it for that wonderful folk art patina; it has also been sealed with a matte varnish. The pumpkin and the tips of the carrots have some fine glass glitter for that extra sparkle. The watch was found in the back of my jewelry drawer and was no longer ticking, so I took the band off of it and surrounded it with apoxie clay and some other findings.

The entire piece is 12" tall and the base measures 4"x4". He is One of a Kind (OOAK) and will never be created again

Great Mississippi River Balloon Race 2008

Time does fly by...here it is October and another great time for family and fun high up on the bluffs of the Mississippi River in Natchez. This is an annual gathering for our family to gather up all of our favorite snacks, drinks, chairs, etc and head for a place to watch the beautiful balloons drifting overhead

White Lunar Witch

This White Lunar Witch is a OOAK 9" figure with a soft poseable body and her head, hands ,legs and shoes are sculpted from Puppen Fimo. She is dressed in a crinkle fabric and soft silk gauze. She holds a glitter moon and has iridescent beading around her leggings and wrists. She can be posed to sit or hung from the beaded hanger in her back. She is sitting on top of a lead crystal bowl and candle stick (not part of the sale) with silk gauze drapped behind her.
