Blue Mermaid

The mermaid is a 9" figure sculpted from puppen fimo over a strong wire armature. She is painted shades of pearlized blue with a mermaid tail of blue fimo with an overlay of silver leaf. Her hair is blue mohair decorated with silk ribbons and tiny pearl beads and she has blue glass eyes. I draped her in dyed silk gauze which can be removed if desired. She holds a deep blue pearlized moon and star bead...Her base is covered with shells, netting, pictures, colors and words depicting the sea. This is a tall piece and is 16" in height. Snow Queen

Finally finished the Snow Queen. She is sculpted from puppen fimo and dressed in white silk velvet with mixed media wings. Her throne is sculpted from apoxie clay and is decorated with mirror tile mosaic work along with the base. The Tree is sculpted from apoxie clay, painted pearl with an overlay of silver leaf. The branches are made from sterling silver wire with iridescent glass beads.

Crocheted Afghan for twins

As I have mentioned before we will be the Great-Grand-Parents of twin boys sometime in April. I finished crocheting the afghans for them from a soft snow white beautiful yarn..

And now I am working on an afghan for a Great-Grand-Daughter, Miss Lilly...many different colors crocheted into granny squares and out-lined in a cream.

We love sparkle and lights. For the past few years we have been putting solar lights in the back yard which are so beautiful at night. Our screened in patio has wind chimes hanging from the eaves on the outside and we also hang them from the ceiling inside the patio. We now have a new addition of colorful lights hanging from the ceiling of the patio and they are beautiful at night.

I have several projects I am working on...I will be the great-grand-mother of twin boys who will be born in April, so I am crocheting white blankets for them...their sister and brother will also receive afghans this year. Miss Lilly will have one with many colors as you can see in the pile of granny squares...her brother Cameron will also have one in green. So, I have lots of crocheting to do in the coming months.

I have managed to start a collection of crochet needles

I love to hang things that twirl and sparkle in the studio windows, I closed the blinds so I could take pictures; but, when the blinds are open, there is lots of color dancing around the room

The Angel Lava Lamp my daughter gave me for Christmas...it is wonderful with all the different colors swirling around in the lamp

And finally, my sculpting table that is rather messy right now while I complete her base with mirror mosaics for the Snow Queen Fairy.

This is my second Santa of the Year.

Santa Claus is a 12" figure with a soft body and sculpted head, hands and boots over a wire armature. He stands with the brass rod and tube method and can be removed from his stand for shipping. I dressed him in handmade wool with a real mink collar. He has beautiful blue glass eyes and lamb's wool for his beard. The trim on his coat and cap is some antique trim I have been hoarding waiting for just the right figure to put it on. He carries a few toys in his back pack and there are a few on his base... OOAK, never to be created again. He is not a toy, but a collectible to be treasured for years to come.

Christmas Fairy

This tiny Christmas Fairy is 10" and sculpted from puppen fimo. I made green eyes for her with mohair lashes and dressed her in some fabric I had been hoarding for quite some time. The deep red silk velvet has gold overtones and I have two small pieces which I have been saving for just the right sculpt. The ruffled gauze fabric also is another piece that worked just right for her.

Her wings are made from silk over wire and I used water colors on the silk until I got just the right depth of color and also applied a few feather and some glitter.

The base has relief work on it of leaves and vines with embedded salt water pearls which I covered with multi-colored gold and silver leaf.

She now resides in my Etsy Shop

New Halloween Pieces

I have been in the Halloween mood lately and decided to sculpt some pieces for my Etsy Shop. Beginning to feel a little like fall, although after Isaac, the humidity and heat is really stifling. And speaking of Isaac, our town of Natchez, Ms. really prepared for some bad weather...we did not get the high winds and heavy rain as expected, although we did have two days of a slow drenching rain and some gusts of wind which caused some big trees to hit the ground...my heart goes out to all those whose homes flooded down on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and in Louisiana..

Here are some of my new pieces along with some bottle art work I have been doing.

A Pumpkin Head with an ornament. I collaged text, pictures and fabric to tell a story of Halloween. She is sculpted from paper clay...I love the collage work I learned while taking a bottle art class with Zinnia Galliher who is a wonderful teacher.

I love doing mosaic work and for years have been making bases decorated with mosaic work for my dolls. Since I have almost daily been checking out Pinterest, I have been inspired to create some of the amazing projects I have seen there. My family use to bowl and when we stopped, we put the bowling balls out in the garden...anyway, after seeing pictures on Pinterest of bowling balls covered with mosaic work, I decided to do the same.....and here are the results.

We had three of these Mexican jars and I put the bowling balls on top of the jars.

This huge coleus has such beautiful colors and blends well with the sweet potato vine.

Here is the other pot with the coleus and sweet potato vine. This one is in the shade more than the other pot, so I assume the coleus are shade plants.

New gazing ball that is suppose to be solar and light up at night; unfortunately, it does not.

This delightful hibiscus plant has bloomed its heart out; the plant has stayed the same size and blooms continuously..

This is the new hosta bed and seems to be doing really well.

I just finished a commission for a Grandmother Fairy and her grandbaby. Commissions always are hard for me because I am not sure I am doing what is expected....but, I have a wonderful collector who requested it and seems very pleased. ....thank you Judy M.

The first thing I did was make them a base decorated with mosic tiles, apoxie clay and polymer clay. I had purchased some new paints from Christi Friesen which were wonderful to work with...a whole new experience of making clay look like it was metal and rusty...must do more with these later.

This Fairy is a 10" sculpt of puppen fimo with arms that can be posed. Initially I sculpted the arms and was not pleased, soooo I broke the arms at the shoulder down to about an inch about the wrist and then wrapped the wire with strips of batting and gauze...now I could pose the arms better and they were strong enough to hold the tiny baby fairy.

I started out by hand dying fabric dark green...oh my goodness, these figures let you know when something is not right...it just was not working. So, I went with the softer greens and she and I were both pleased. Her hair which is dyed mohair was styled in many different ways, but the final style with a touch of grey seemed to work. Now it all was coming together and she was very happy. But there was the problem with the wings; the first set seemed to over power her, so I had to make a second set which fit much better.

Since I have started crocheting, I decided to crochet the baby a cap and then wrapped her in gauze with feathers for her baby wings and placed her in her Grandmother's arms...we were all very happy with the final results...

So, there you have a brief explantion of "yarn bombing"...If you google that term you will find wonderful pictures on the internet that will inspire you. My "bombing" was done on a chair in my studio and here is that chair all finished and ready to be admired and used. My next project is my mailbox...

Alice in Wonderland....these wonderful characters are just so much fun to create. I have started a new series I think. So far, I have sculpted the White Rabbit and the Mad Hatter...more figures are on the drawing board. These figures are approximately 7" high and sculpted from paper clay. They stand on wood cubes with decopauged pictures of original Alice in Wonderland pictures. Both have found new homes...

I have become addicted to "Pinterest" a wonderful new website where people can "pin" pictures of items that interest them on a "board". There is everything under the sun on that site..from tutorials to beautiful pictures of garden, flowers, art work, etc. It is truly a place to become inspired...and I have started a new hobby...crocheting..I had no idea there were so many beautiful items being made from crochet...and there is freeform crochet, certainly works of art. I purchased two books and also found that you can actually get tutorials on youtube. What would I do without my computer???

So, my first project is covering a chair that is in my studio. This is not my idea, but saw it on Pinterest and immediately fell in love. Oh, if you want to go to Pinterest, click on that button on the left side of my blog and it will take you there..

This is a chair my daughter painted for me, so I hope she does not mind if I cover some of it with crochet...as soon as I have three more granny squares crocheted, I will put them all together to cover the seat.

Stay tuned...I am having more fun with this.

Snow Queen Ballet and Museum of Art

We had a wonderful week-end beginning with a visit to the Museum of Art in Jackson, Ms. along with the new Art Garden.

Although I enjoyed all the art work, my favorite was the "Bethlehem Tree" which was inspired by the "Angel Tree" in the New York City Metropolitan Museum of Art. The collection consisted of handcrafted Italian figures found through private venues and auction houses such as Sotheby's and Christie's. It was breathtaking and I was truly inspired.

The following pictures were taken from a book I own... "The Angel Tree" which gives the history and beautiful pictures of the actual Angel Tree at the Metropolitan Museum of Art....and The Bethlehem Tree was as beautiful as the original.

We left the Museum and headed to Thalia Mara Hall to see the "Snow Queen" ballet inspired by The Hans Christian Andersen Classic. Ballet Magnificat was founded by Keith and Kathy Thibodeaux attracting dancers from professional companies worldwide to spread the word of Jesus Christ through dance. The ballet was magnificent with beautiful music, gorgeous costumes and talented dancers...

This past week-end was beautiful for hot-air balloons in Natchez, MS. As usual, family and friends gathered and enjoyed just being together, the fabulous weather and of course the balloons. We always get together high on the bluffs over looking the Mississipp River for a great view.

Halloween Fairy/Witch

This Fairy Witch is a 12" figure sculpted from puppen fimo with legs and arms that can be posed. I dressed her in silk fabric and silk ribbons with mixed media wings ( I understand that wings are faster than a broom). She has green artist made eyes and red wool for her hair. I gave her a stool to sit on although she can be placed where ever you may need a Witch or a Fairy. She carries pumpkins which can be removed if you wish to display her year round.

Red Head Pixie Witch

A tiny 9" Red Head Witch is now residing in my Etsy Shop. She has been in an Art Gallery and I decided it was time for her to return to me. I sculpted her from puppen fimo including her clothes and boots. A stockinette dyed eggplant purple and trimmed with copper paint was draped over her. She has gorgeous red mohair for hair and eyelashes. The base is decorated with beautiful mosaic tiles.

This tiny Pixie Witch, which is a favorite of mine and being used as my avatar, has flown off to a wonderful new home.

I finally have gotten in the mood to create some ornaments and this is the first..he is big measuring about 10" in diamenter and 10" from the top to the bottom of his tassle. Sculpted from paper clay with handmade eyes and painted with acrylics and sealed; he sports a yarn tassle with beads. He can be found for sale over on "Halloween Queen's Castle Bootique" . New Update for Mississippi River flooding in Natchez, Ms. and Vidalia, La.

Today is May 15, 2011. The river crest has been lowered from 64' to 63.5' and today it stands at 61.67'. Most of my pictures are taken from the bluffs in Natchez, but I did manage to get some pretty good pictures while riding across the bridge to Vidalia and back to Natchez. Also, don't forget to check with the Natchez Democrat Newspaper for more pictures and information.

Update of 2011 Flood in Natchez, Ms. and Vidalia, La.

Today's date is 5/13/2011. I took more pictures today from the bluff in Natchez, Ms. overlooking the Mississippi River. These pictures are showing the water levels in Vidalia, La. The river is now at 59.81 feet.

I have had so many hits on my blog that I would like to recommend to those who are interested to click on the website of the Natchez Democrat Newspaper. They have so much information regarding the flood...pictures, videos, panoramas and river webcams.

This is the River Park Medical Center. Here you can see the walkway is completely covered and the river now covers the walkways that extend out into the river. It appears the water is up to the barriers surrounding the building.

The following pictures were taken on May 7,2011 high on the bluffs in Natchez Miss. The Mississippi was at 54 ft. It should crest at 64 ft around May 21st. The buildings you see are all in Vidalia, La. across the river from Natchez, with the exception of this first picture.

Forest Fairy is a 9" full body sculpt from Puppen Fimo polymer clay. She has hand made green eyes and red mohair for hair. Her headdress is made from beautiful glass beads woven into gold wire with silk leaves. I dressed her in dyed gauze, which I believe a Forest Fairy would probably wear. When getting ready to start a new figure, I begin to pull out my stash and see just what I have that may inspire me. Or just walking in my garden will inspire me...here are a few of my favorite things.

Wings that I have made and also purchased from other artists.

I have a lot of lamb's wool and mohair because I use to make santas and still do, but just not as many..but yummy wool still catches my eye

Hand dyed silk ribbon...love it

"Through the Looking Glass" illustrated by Anne Bachelier . I must make Alice all dressed in white with that piece of silk I had hand dyed for her sash.

I usually do not like artificial flowers, but I made this arrangement in one of my favorite vases by Buck Run Pottery and I love these colors.

These are just a few things that inspire me...there are so many more, movies, books, people, buttons, fabric, especially silk and velvet.

She has hand painted eyes, mohair for hair and is dressed in hand dyed silk and gauze decorated with faux blue berries. On her tiny feet are felt shoes with a violet flower adorning them. She is One of a Kind (OOAK) designed and handmade by the artist without the use of molds. Violet is now residing in my Etsy Shop waiting for someone to come along and adopt her.

Well, they say, "never say never". But, I have decided for the time being I will not sell on E-bay because of the fees they are charging and other reasons I will not go into here. So, I will be putting my work in my Etsy Shop and my Halloween pieces will also be found in the Queen's Castle Bootique.

The Valentine Fairy

The Valentine Fairy started out before Christmas to be a Christmas Fairy; but, I kept putting her aside and she was never finished, so, she is now a Valentine Fairy. I sculpted this 9" figure from puppen fimo and dressed her in my favorite fabrics, silk and silk velvet. She has hand made eyes and beautiful soft mohair for her hair. Her shoes are silk with leather soles and she stands on a wooden base that has been decorated with apoxie clay and gold leaf...she has wings of mixed media.

She has flown to her new home...

Amber, the Flying Fairy

I just completed Amber the Flying Fairy and placed her on E-bay I have been finishing the small pieces since I just had cataract surgery on the other eye and have not been able to really play in the studio. I have a "Christmas Fairy" that is still not finished and I guess she will end up being a Valentine Fairy.

The head and hands on this Fairy are sculpted from Rose Puppen Fimo and I dressed her in a metallic fabric, silk ribbon and silk velvet. I actually did some embroidery work around the velvet body. I use to do embroidery all the time...think I may start adding it to some of my dolls. Her wings are mixed media and really turned out sparkly and pretty. Here are a few pictures of her.

This tiny Fairy was sculpted from brown Prosculpt and I dressed her in dyed silk gauze. I gave her some beading and a beaded hanger so she could swing and sparkle in the breeze. She is for sale on my Etsy Shop

Christmas, Before, During, and After

We really enjoyed Christmas this year...grandson Brandon and his wife Niki along with their two children, Lilly and Cameron and our daughter Linda and husband Johnny. Johnny's family joined us on Sunday...So it is all over and I will begin taking down the Christmas decorations because I have to have cataract surgery on my other eye on the 10th of January.

For some reason I failed to take many pictures and I hate that...guess I was enjoying my company so much I did not have time.

This little doll is my Great grand-daughter, Lilly. Dressed in a vintage style dress and hand knitted cap and bootees.

Tiny Fairy for "Lilly"

I just finished a tiny hanging fairy for my Great Grand-daughter "Lilly". She will get it Christmas morning. The Fairy is sculpted from Rose puppen fimo and dressed in antique lace and silk with mixed media wings....lots of German glass glitter to make her sparkle as she swings in the air.

I guess I am obsessed with taking pictures of my Christmas decorations. But, we have really enjoyed them this year. I had cataract surgery last month and since I also have glaucoma and have lost some sight in both eyes, I feel blessed that I can still see beautiful things. Anyway, I took more pictures because it looks as if Santa has dropped off some presents under the tree. I put a Folk Art Santa in front of the tree. I love that Santa...he was made by an unknown artist ( at least unknown to me, because the Antique shop where I bought him would not tell me the name of the artist and it was not signed.) Love to sit in this room with all the lights on drinking....coffee, tea or a nice glass of wine....it is very relaxing.

It is apparent, Barney does not want this knit sweater on.

Can you believe it is Christmas again!! The older I get the faster time moves. Anyway, I find that each year when decorating for Christmas I tend to decorate less and less. This year, the decorating is in the living and dining rooms only and a wreath on the front door. So, here are a few pictures...I must say, I do love my tree. Several years ago, we bought a new tree with lights on it and all the garlands I use have lights on them which certainly makes decorating much easier.
