Now I am sure they could not contain there excitement any longer, much like us, so it almost lets them get away with it. Anyway, they were kind enough to record it and put it on YouTube. You got to thank them for not using cheap marketing tactics.

I was reading an article the other day about how Facebook has grown and how it dominates the picture hosting arena. The figures are staggering with around 40 million photos being uploaded a day. That’s 2000 photos per second! The server power needed for that amount of data transfer is pretty huge and Facebook is already pretty well known for their customised server solutions which are hosted at various companies.

Facebook's Data Center

Facebook spends about R160 million a year on it’s numerous data centers with that cost increasing often (I would say at least on a monthly basis). With the possibility of reaching astronomical costs, Facebook made an announcement that it is going to be building it’s very own data center in Prineville in the US.

By the look of the artist impressions, the facility is going to be huge and most likely cost a pretty penny as well. Knowing Facebook, I can’t actually wait to see the finished “product”.

It will be based on the TomTom Start with a few cosmetic changes. No they have not put 2 horns on it and no they have not put how many times they have won the Currie Cup on it either. Also TomTom have confirmed that it won’t direct you to Loftus no matter where you enter even if it is ABSA Stadium in Durban.

In roughly 14 hours (from the time of this post), your RC license will expire and your computer will blow up. Ok it won’t really blow up and to be honest I don’t really know what will happen. I take it as a guess that you will be given a nice big message saying you cannot use your machine until you purchase a valid license for Windows 7.

It seems as if everyone had totally forgotten about D-Day for the Windows 7 RC. Everyone except for Microsoft.

It’s a well known fact that Microsoft has dominated the workplace, no one will dispute that. Now a not so well known fact is that all the tools you use on a daily basis actuallyhave a free alternative if you know where to look. This article is not going to pit Microsoft against open source vendors but rather enlighten you to your options.

A couple of questions to get you thinking:

Do you eat take-away foods?

Do the the creators of those take-aways care about the effects of that food on you?

Do you care about the effects of take away to your body ?

Don’t get me wrong I eat take-aways rather often, the whole point I’m trying to establish is do you know what your getting yourself into ? Have you chosen this way of life ? Do you know the alternatives.

Similar questions pertain to software. You get the software manufacturers who give you that quick take away fix (at a huge cost), and you get the software manufacturers who offer a better way of living (for FREE). The healthy option for me is Open Source Living! It’s the lifestyle I have adopted which I am sure you will also find absolutely refreshing. It’s also why I am, where I am today (love you PHP). It was also the best choice with regard to starting our own company.

If you want to make a change in your lifestyle or are interested in the open source arena jump right in, trust me there’s no looking back. Have a look at Open Source Living to get you started.

I am a tech geek through and through but I am one that loves my sport as well. So after an intense game of touch rugby there is nothing better than collapsing on my bed /couch and catching up with the latest tech news on my laptop. This is where the Speaker Lapdesk from Logitech could come in very handy.

Lapdesks are nothing new, throw a cushion onto a piece of wood and there you go. Those home jobs generally will do the job but there are two factors that come into play, heat and comfort. By the sounds of it Logitech has got this right and added a bit of entertainment value.

The Speaker Lapdesk N700 comes with integrated speakers, a built-in fan and obviously a padded base. The fan obviously keeps the air flowing underneath the laptop (put a laptop on your bed for 10 minutes and see how hot it gets) and the padded base, other than comfort, also stops any heat from the laptop reaching your legs.

The speakers are connected to your laptop via USB which powers the lapdesk and also passes sound to the speakers. Conveniently there are volume controls on the lapdesk and a on/off switch for the fan for those moments when silence is golden.

We only expecting to see these in May and they will only take about R800 out of your wallet.

Update: Go look here to see what it really looks like.

We heard about a TomTom and Blue Bulls collaboration for a new GPS the other day, in other words a Blue Bulls GPS that gives you directions to Loftus. We obviously had a look around and have no solid information other than a tweet from the TomTom South Africa Twitter account.

It apparently has a few of the Blue Bulls players giving you directions, one of them being Victor Matfield. Imagine that, “I got lost so called up ol’ Victor and he gave me directions, great guy that”. Let’s hope some of the players stick to Afrikaans though.

The phone does sound like it will have it all. The ability to capture, view and share HD video makes it seem like a very good phone to have, that is if it does it right.

It will be on the Symbian OS even though Windows Mobile and Android are where all the talk is at the moment especially with Nexus One and Windows Mobile 7.

I would definitely be expecting all the bells and whistles from Sony Ericsson with this phone and they seemingly have not let me down. HD video (720p), social networking apps, 8.1 megapixel camera (with a flash – if that’s what “photo light” and “video light” means), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3.5 mm audio jack, TV out (VGA resolution) and a 16.9 nHD wide touch-screen (3.2 inches with a resolutions of 640 x 360 nHD).

Is it worth the R4300 price tag? I definitely think so.
