If there’s one thing that I can’t stand, it’s when someone accuses me of something I didn’t do.

I think most people would probably stand with me on that one, but it really drives me insane!

I guess it’s only natural to feel that way, right?

Her roommate is on her case because she thinks she’s stealing from her, and that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Since I have moved in she has accused me of using her bathroom products which I haven’t at all. I told her she can simply keep them in her room if she’s so paranoid about it.

She doesn’t want to keep it in her room she says she has the right to keep her things in the washroom. I said well keep it but you don’t have the right to accuse me without evidence.

Now almost routinely she crashes out in the group chat about how I’m stealing her body wash and serums.

She keeps providing ‘proof’ by saying my bottle was at this height but now it’s at this height. Well she is the one using it regularly, so of course it will decrease?

This sounds like a huge headache.

I’m so so confused about what to do. I cannot move out right now and I know she has a longer lease than mine.

The other housemates who live downstairs don’t care enough to take sides or discuss the issue but they are routinely seeing how I’m ‘stealing’ in the group chat.

I tried keeping her product basket outside and she started yelling saying I am trying to steal them. She only behaves like this with me from the very first month.

I’m not made of money: The sequel

I’m working the service desk at a grocery store. At my store, we do Western Union money services at the desk where someone can send or receive money to/from somewhere else.

I’m in the middle of doing one WU transaction when the guy for this story comes in and gets in line.

Before I even start helping him, the guy threw a tantrum over the fact that another customer was waiting by the lottery machine instead of waiting behind him (the guy by lottery said he knew the WU guy was first) so I’m thinking to myself “this is gonna be a fun one.”

This wasn’t going to be simple.

I finish the transaction I’m in the middle of and the guy comes up to the desk. He’s says he’s here to pick up WU and hands me a piece of paper with the money transfer number (the number used to look up WU transactions, and the amount he’s picking up.

He’s picking up $7500.00

I turn to my front end manager who’s also standing behind the desk and ask him if I’m even allowed to do that kind of a transaction since I’ve never had one that big before.

He texts our bookkeeper to find out and also opens the register where we keep the bulk of the money and starts counting to see if there’s enough in there (I had already done a number of big WU transactions earlier in the day).

There are now two reasons they can’t do the transaction.

I take the paper with the transfer number and type it into the computer.

There are no transactions under that number.

I look at the paper and ask for clarity on a couple of the numbers since the handwriting wasn’t that great. I try again, and once again, no transactions come up.

As I’m doing that, my manager says there’s not enough in the drawer.

I can understand why the guy was frustrated, but there’s nothing they could do about it.

The guy starts arguing with both of us, saying to me the number he was given came from WU and he’s had it for three days and saying to my manager that WU told him he could pick up the money here.

I tell him if the number is not in the system, there is nothing I can do about it and he has to call WU.

My manager tells him that while we do WU services, that doesn’t mean we’re going to have big amounts of cash just lying around.

The guy eventually gave up and left.

That sounds frustrating for everyone involved.

I’m sure this was frustrating for the employees, but it had to be much more frustrating for the customer. It’s his money. Western Union told him to go to this specific store. So he does, but they can’t help him. Where is he supposed to go?

It’s not the employee’s fault. It’s not the customer’s fault. It sounds like Western Union is the real problem here.

Imagine working for the same company for a few years when a new manager comes in and wants to make a big change to try to save the company money. If you knew this change would actually end up costing the company more money, would you explain or would you comply and let the manager find out the hard way?

Try to Save Money? Try again…..

This was more than a few years ago when I worked for a low ball Medical Home Health company. I was hired as a Respiratory Therapist and had a area to cover roughly 150 miles out from the office.

The company had issues with managers cause of the lost of money and always had turn over.

So my job was to set up breathing treatment machines but the most common thing was checking on oxygen concentrators in Patients homes.

At the time I would make $25 a visit plus mileage. So you try and group the Pt’s and hit three or four at a shot. Every month a Pt had to be checked and the check lasted about 15 minutes just a fast check.

A new manager usually means something is going to change, and not necessarily for the better.

SO one day we get a new manger that was really all about saving money and getting the company back on track. He started to streamline departments and all I could hear was things were not done BY THE BOOK.

So he called me into the office one day, I worked from home mostly, and had a talk. That the cost of driving everywhere was to high for the amount of Pt’s I had and could we do something about it.

Explained that there was no other way of doing my job than how I was doing it.

So he came up with the idea of a PHONE VISIT.

The manager was insistant.

I explained really can’t do that cause I could not see the equipment.

And he countered with the drivers see the machines every week and can just spot check to see if they were working. So he made up a work sheet to Check off the things I usually look for, Hours of use, clean filters?, clean machine?, hoses ok and not needed repaired?, total of 10 questions.

He proceeded to say I can call and have to Pt give me hours and ask the questions and bill it under a visit.

Which I can’t do cause the code isn’t right, so he look up all our codes for me and picks Phone Consult and tell me to bill under that. To Cover my Butt I ask for a letter stating this and he gives it to me next day.

She did exactly what the manager told her to do.

Cue Malicious Compliance.

I got all my Pt’s numbers toward at the end of the month and worked through the list and got 34 done in about 4 hours and decided that was enough to make a point.

At this time I complete my paperwork and send it to corporate with the letter from my boss telling me to bill under that type code.

She was making a lot more than before!

Week later I get a check for $4250 since that Phone visit code was a $125 per consult ( Mainly used for ventilators).

Not bad for a Part time job.

So The next week I do a few more patients and submit my pay.

Corporate definitely noticed the pay increase.

The Following week I get a call from Corporate asking why I was getting paid more than full timers in Executive posts.

I explained everything and forwarded all the documentation to them.

A week later the manager was at his desk when a fleet of cars pulled in and in walked HR from main office and fired him..

I’m sure that was nice while it lasted! The manager clearly didn’t think that through very well.

The manager clearly had a very bad idea. Instead of insisting on this “phone visit” change, he should’ve listened to the reasons why it wouldn’t work and done some research about what the different billing codes actually meant.

I (24M) have been with my girlfriend (20F) for 2.5 years, and we’ve lived together for about two years.

We moved away from our hometowns together for work, and for me, it was a chance for us to build our own life and see how our relationship worked while living independently.

The issue is that she’s extremely close to her family. She has five siblings, while my family is much smaller. She talks to them every day and often helps them financially.

It seems like a member of her family is always staying with them.

Over the last year, different members of her family have come to live or work near us.

First her sister, then her dad and older brother. Later, her brother’s wife and kids came for a few weeks. The kids would often stay over, sometimes without anyone even asking me first.

I don’t dislike her family, but I feel like our home is treated as an extension of theirs.

Whenever I try to bring up wanting more notice or wanting us to make decisions together, my girlfriend either says, “Okay,” and shuts down, or gets upset and won’t discuss it.

He just misses privacy.

The current issue is her 9-year-old brother. He came to stay with us for what was supposed to be 10 days. Now it’s turned into almost a month because his stay keeps getting extended, and their mom is also coming to visit.

We live in a studio apartment, so there is basically no privacy.

He’s a normal kid, but he constantly uses my PS5, leaves messes behind, is very picky with food, and sometimes doesn’t flush the toilet.

More than anything, I miss having our own space.

Now, he’s trying to set a boundary.

Today I told my girlfriend that when their mom goes home, her brother should go home too. I told her I miss our privacy, freedom, and alone time as a couple.

She immediately looked annoyed, said, “Okay,” and then barely spoke to me afterward.

I don’t want her to stop seeing her family. I just want boundaries and a say in who stays in our home and for how long.

AITA?

Yikes! Having so little privacy would definitely get old.

It really does sound like that.

He may need to take a step back and really think about what he wants.

It doesn’t sound like this is going to change, especially if she’s already brushing off his concerns instead of talking them through. Her family will probably always be a huge part of her life, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

At the same time, there’s nothing wrong with wanting some privacy and a say over who stays in your own home.

If they can’t agree on something this important, he may have to decide whether he can learn to live with it or whether they’re simply not compatible in the long run.

Schools are always making changes to the way they do things with the hope of providing students with a better education, though that does not always work.

When the school in this story changed the way they graded students, one kid realized that he never had to write a report again and he could still get an ‘A’ in the class.

His teacher kept trying to adjust the way he assigned the work, but the student would adapt in order to avoid doing any actual work on the reports. In the end, the school had to revamp the grading standards again next year to avoid this problem.

While the student should not have done this, it is really on the school to ensure that students have to do their work. Read through the full story to see what the student did, and how you feel about it.

Background:

As I started high school, a new principal took over and decided to overhaul how everything worked.

Schools are always changing the way they do things.

My freshman year, they got rid of finals, sophomore year they turned classes 100% test based grades, (also letting students retake tests 3 times since grades dropped fast), junior year they made all tests graded on a 1-5 basis instead of A-F where class grades were still A-F. “5” was given a 95% or A, “4” was 85% or B, “3” was 75% or C, 2 was 65% or D, and “1” was 55% or F.

You could not go below a 55% since 1 was the lowest grade (and the only failing one).

I assume the teachers are doing their best.

My AP physics teacher my junior year was one of the people in charge of curriculum changes, and he definitely thought he was doing a good job and helping the students. After all, grades were getting better – especially for athletes.

He had helped redesign the entire curriculum, but hadn’t changed much about the way he graded his class. He intentionally made his tests on the harder side and used a flat curve for grading.

Reports are always difficult to complete.

With letter grades, he marked a 70% as an A, 60% B, 50% C and so on. He decided to maintain these percentage cutoffs when he transitioned to the 1-5 scale.

If any of you have taken an advanced science class, you know lab reports are typically a big portion of the class and likely caused you many hours of work, mostly doing tedious things like formatting equations in Microsoft word. I hated doing lab reports.

Why do the report at all?

Thanks to my teachers new curriculum, lab reports could not be part of your grade without being part of your test. His solution was to make lab reports equal to 10% of your test grade, but it was graded independently also on a 1-5 basis.

The lowest score you could get was a 1, or 55%. I quickly realized that even if I turned in nothing for my lab report, I would be given a 55% instead of a 0 and would still get 5.5% of my test grade when I only needed 70% for an A. Losing 4.5% of my test seemed like a worthy sacrifice.

Cue MC:

The teacher figured out what he is doing.

For the first few reports of the year, I turned in nothing for my report. He would give me a 1 and scold me, but after the 2nd or 3rd time in a row, he realized I was getting As on his tests anyway and I was doing it intentionally.

He then made the requirement that test scores would be “inconclusive” until lab reports were turned in, instead of just giving us a 1 and moving on.

This kid is not going to do any work he doesn’t have to.

When the next report came around, I simply turned in a piece of paper with my name and “lab report” typed on it and turn it in.

He begrudgingly gave me the 1 on the report and the A on the test since I turned in “my report”. When the next report came around, he announced reports must have each section in them.

Why doesn’t the teacher just change the grading standards?

I’m not sure what he was expecting, but I turned in a page with my name and the title of each section, with no words under the section. Once again he gave me my A.

Next time around he announced each section must have at least a paragraph, 3-5 sentences, in each section to be considered complete.

What else did he expect?

In my MC fashion, I gave him three short sentences in each paragraph that went something like “This is my introduction paragraph. It must be at least three sentences long. This is three sentences.” Got my A.

The last time he changed the rules, he announced with a smug face while looking in my direction that there was a 5 page requirement and text had to pertain to the subject at hand.

This is just plagiarism, though. He should get in trouble for that.

I proceeded to Google a wiki article pertaining to the experiment, copy and pasted 5 pages of text, and cited Wikipedia to not get hit with plagiarism.

I got my A and he either gave up coming up with more rules or realized he wasn’t going to win the battle.

“Fallout”:

It seems unlikely that a school would let students get away with this type of thing.

The next year, he changed the entire schools curriculum to include a system of “obedience” scores to punish students for not completing work, even if the work isn’t graded.

I have another MC story bending those rules to fit my agenda for anyone interested.

While funny, this isn’t helping the kids learn. If the school really did this, they failed the students by letting them get away with passing without actually learning anything.

A friendship bracelet is supposed to symbolize closeness, not become the center of a dramatic argument.

One 16-year-old found herself involved in a conflict when she received exactly this kind of gift from her friend for her birthday, a bracelet matching one already given to their mutual friend, with the plan being that all three would eventually have the same one.

That plan fell apart when the friend discovered the bracelet was limited edition and couldn’t buy herself one after all, something the birthday girl felt genuinely bad about.

But what started as sympathy turned into an argument a few days later, when the same friend sat her down and admitted she felt left out and uncomfortable that two of them had matching bracelets while she didn’t.

When she declined to remove a gift she’d been given and now wears daily, she got called selfish, and now she’s stuck wondering if keeping her own birthday present on somehow makes her the bad friend.

AITA for refusing to take off my friendship bracelet?

Me (16F) and my friends Emma and Lola are three best friends, and recently I celebrated my birthday and Emma gave me a bracelet that I really adore.

I was really happy with it since she had actually given Lola the same bracelet recently, and she was planning on buying one for herself soon so we all had matching friendship bracelets.

But soon their grand plans for matching were squashed.

She kept saying she would buy it for herself, but then about a week ago she told me it was limited edition apparently and she couldn’t buy it anymore, which was really sad and I felt bad for her.

Just for a bit of extra context, I wear this bracelet daily, but my other friend Lola wears her bracelet every few days, so it’s not like we are constantly wearing the bracelet.

That’s when the bracelets created some drama in the group.

Anyway, a few days ago she told me she had to tell me something and sat me down and told me she feels uncomfortable with the fact that me and Lola have a bracelet and she doesn’t, she said she feels left out.

I told her I understood, but that it has nothing to do with how close we are to each other since Lola and Emma are actually closer since they’ve known each other for longer.

Now Emma is really mad.

Now she’s angry though and calling me selfish for refusing to take it off, even though it was a birthday gift from her, and I think it’s unjustified, but one of my other friends tells me I should just take it off to keep the peace and make her happy.

So AITA?

Emma’s sadness about not being able to buy her own bracelet is understandable, but redirecting that disappointment into an accusation of selfishness against the person she gave the gift to isn’t fair or logical.

A present that gets worn daily and genuinely appreciated is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do, and treating that as some kind of betrayal just isn’t right.

Removing the bracelet to keep the peace might smooth things over temporarily, but it also sets a troubling precedent.

If you worked in the same retail store for awhile, you’d learn what to expect. You’d know when you should be suspicious of customers and learn what to do to prevent them getting away with anything.

In this story, one convenience store worker shares what he did when he was suspicious that a young man was going to try to steal beer from the store.

He ended up being right about the guy’s plan, and the thief was clearly in panic mode.

I was working for an In-convenience store back in the day.

This place wasn’t in a necessarily rough neighborhood (I’ve worked much worse in the past), but there were just enough High School and College-Aged kids to get real annoying real quick.

This particular store has doors that lock with the push of a button behind the register. Pretty cool actually, and important detail for later.

Also an important detail; my manager’s a genius, so they have me put a big stack of beer right by the front register. You know, so the beer run guys can see how close the beer is to the door from OUTSIDE.

He knew something was up.

Curly Haired kid comes in after just walking around the parking lot for twenty minutes, and my spidey senses are tingling.

I know this dude is going to Beer Run me, I just know it.

He comes to my register and asks for a cigarette that happens to be very far up on the shelf. I’ve had this happen before; someone asks for something that’s hard to reach and when I turn my back they’re gone.

Not THIS time…

The kid wasn’t paying attention.

I then press the door lock button (which makes a very loud “clack!” at the location of the door(s) which was my way of letting him know that I knew what he was doing.

Well, he evidently didn’t notice, despite my sighs, despite my exaggerated movement towards the button.

I was thinking to myself (the best person to really think to) “What does this kid think I’m doing?”

Maybe he was desperate, whatever, but as I turned around I hear a way-more-satisfying-than-anticipated THUD!!! as this kid, with an 18 pack in hand, slams into the locked doors.

The kid was persistent!

This kid was ON THE FLOOR, I have no idea how the 18pack in his hand didn’t break.

He then kept slamming against the door with his body, saying “Open this door, open this effing door right now!”.

Enter Malicious Compliance.

I see this kid come back towards one side of the store and wind up to plow through this door. I know this kid’s gonna break the lock if he doesn’t stop doing this….

He timed it perfectly.

He makes one last long run at the door and then I press the unlock button last possible second. T

he kid flies, literally FLIES through the doors swinging open, tumbles to the ground outside, finally the 18 pack breaks, rolling everywhere.

The kid picked up like four beers and just kept running.

That’s funny, but I thought he was going to call the police on the kid or something since he caught him trying to steal and had trapped him in the store.

Look, we all want to be pleasant to our roommates if we happen to live with other people.

But let’s fact the facts: if someone is constantly getting on your case about things, you’ll most likely lose your cool and not want to deal with them in any way, shape, or form.

And if you’re living in close quarters with someone, these kinds of problems just seem to keep getting worse.

The woman who wrote this story has had just about enough of her roommate and she spilled the beans on what’s happening.

“Me (female, 23) and my roommate (female, 26).

I have lived with her for 2 years due to rent being cheaper only paying $600 a month due to me being in college and working full time.

She has been amazing in that aspect but refuses to understand when I text her about receiving rent money or can we please turn off the AC before you leave. She never answers my text related to important things.

We had a situation where I texted her at 9:30 pm. ‘I’m going out with my friends, my car will be at the apartment. I will be home at midnight or 1 am.’

Doh!

She arrived at home around 10 pm assuming I was home because she saw my car and locked me out putting the deadbolt.

I had to wake her up at 1 am to open the door for me, ever since she texts me every night, ‘I’m home for the evening, you can lock up.’

This is starting to get old…

But it’s getting so excessive like every night about the front door.

I was blunt today and told her to stop texting me about the door because whoever comes home last should be responsible for locking up you should just read my text and respond to them.

She is still doing it and I worked up the courage to call her to maybe explain in a nicer way than text and now declining my calls.

I don’t know what to do.”

Child custody can be such a huge hassle for divorced parents, especially when one ex is more accommodating than the other.

So the first summer they had visitation, my husband had transitioned out of the military and we were setting up a house in a new state.

The timing working where I was going to drive and stay with friends along the drive up and down. I would have to stay in a hotel one night of the trip.

I was traveling with a 13 month old and 15 week old puppy. So I asked my ex husband if he could meet me 90 minutes away so I could save some time traveling with 3 kids and a new puppy.

Of course he didn’t want to do that, he said he couldn’t afford the 20 bucks in gas. “20 dollars might be not a lot of money to you, but it is for me.”

She had another idea.

I thought about just telling him I would give him 20, but then something else popped in my head.

He lives about 90 minutes away from the closest major airport. The same city I asked him to meet me. If kids fly unaccompanied, it has to be a direct flight, so they had to leave from that airport.

I research the costs of flights, find it to be affordable. It will only cost a little more than the hotel stays and gas. So, my petty self decides that this is a great idea.

I wish I could have seen the look on his face when he opened that email.

He still had to drive to the same city he would have met me if he had agreed to meet me when I was driving.

He will go out of his way to help anyone except me.

It worked out better in the end, and saved me days in a van with a baby, puppy and 2 kids. Bonus, I didn’t have to see him or talk to him.

That actually sounds like a great idea! It was revenge on her ex, and she saved herself a lot of hassle.

As long as the kids enjoyed flying, it was a win for everyone. Not only did OP save herself time and quite a hassle driving with three kids and a puppy, but she also didn’t have to see her ex. That’s a huge win!

I’m not sure what their child custody agreement looks like, but I would think that the dad would be at least partially responsible for transporting his kids to his house. The least he can do is drive to a local airport to pick them up.

You know the best thing about paying with a credit card or debit card? Nobody has to count change.

In this story, a woman at the grocery store wants to pay with cash, and she wants to use quite a few coins.

That’s when the cashier has to step in and explain the rules.

Instead of making the cashier’s life easier and simply following the rule, the customer decided to be a little petty and comply with the rule while still being as annoying as possible.

I work as a cashier in a supermarket. I mentally scream every single shift because people really stress me out these days but alas, i can pay my bills.

My workplace has a ton of rules; some stupid, some not.

For example we have a minimum of 5 dollars per card transaction (yes ma’am, even apple pay), but personally i gotta say i only follow that rule when a manager is around… Or if the client is a real jerk. You understand.

They have a rule about payments with change.

There’s a rule that i do understand: we cashiers can’t accept a huge amount of loose change or change rolls without a manager’s approval.

We can totally accept something like 4 dollars in just quarters, but not that same amount in just dimes and cents; we have a Coinstar machine literally steps away for that.

Well, guess what happened some days ago…

This oldish lady, who couldn’t even grant me a “good evening” , wanted to give me her whole total in quarters, dimes, nickels and cents. Her totall was about $12 with some cents, so i couldn’t definitely accept it.

The woman tried to get revenge.

I explained the rules, what i stated before, and even offered her help to manage the machine.

But she refused and said that “money is money, you’re just being a lazy witch because you probably don’t even know how to count”.

I stood there, mentally insulting her, but physically still smiling, staring at her.

She sighed and fetched a 20 from her purse but stoped. This lady suddenly had a huge grin, put the bill in her purse again, gave me a 10 and $3 in nickels, dimes and quarters. “You explained the maximum was 4, right?”.

Two can play that game!

Now i wanted to scream, but i remained calm. I simply sighed and admitted defeat until i had the brightest idea.

I was supposed to give her .67¢ in return and i made sure to open the roll of cents i had. Slooowly, i counted and gave her whole change in JUST cents.

She scoffed and asked me “what the heck is all this?!”

My answer? With a huge customer service smile I just answered “Money is money, right?”

She just dumped it all in her purse, grabbed her stuff and walked away fuming. Oh well ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

Sometimes the best way to make a point is by being just as annoying as the person who is annoying you. That could also be seen as childish, but it can still be satisfying.

This does seem odd.

One person explains why a minimum payment for credit cards makes sense.

This person agrees with the customer that the policy is stupid.

This person has a theory.

I can understand wanting to pay with a lot of change if you have a lot of change you’re tying to get rid of. I can also understand a store setting a rule to prevent a customer paying for a large order with all pennies.

I can understand why the customer in this story was annoyed, but it’s too bad to take it out on the cashier. It’s  kind of a don’t shoot the messenger situation. All OP did was explain the policy and follow it. It’s not like she created the policy.

If a customer wants a policy to change, the cashier is not the right person to talk to.

Ten years of living next door to someone is a long time to still be walking on eggshells around their unpredictable temper.

One 19-year-old has spent that entire decade dealing with a neighbor whose daughter falsely accused him of something he never did at age 12, followed by years of ongoing harassment that seemed to finally end when she showed up unannounced, hugged him, and apologized.

That peace lasted about a year before it fell apart entirely, starting when his mother had a panic attack from a snake phobia and called out for help, only for the neighbor to start screaming insults about her instead.

When she approached him directly the following night, still yelling, he was left wondering how to set a boundary without risking his own safety.

My neighbor approached me at 10 pm.

My neighbor Candy (51F) and I (19FTM) have lived next to each other for 10 years. Her daughter lied to a lawyer and claimed I did something I did not do at 12.

But Candy never treated him the same after that.

Candy has been randomly harassing me for years, and one day last year she came over, hugged me, and apologized for what she had done and said in the past, and nothing happened since.

Fast forward to 2 days ago, my mother had a panic attack from her phobia of snakes and yelled for another neighbor to help.

Candy wasn’t sympathetic at all towards his mother’s situation.

Candy decided to start yelling, “The crazy b**** is yelling for you again!” which obviously upset my mother, causing a screaming match between Candy and my mother, not involving me.

Finally, he was starting to reach his limit with Candy’s nonsense.

Tonight she approached me while yelling, and I, obviously tired, was in no mood, and I would like to ask her to stop, but to be fair I am terrified to go to her door and she is not on social media such as Facebook.

He feels like the rest of the neighbors are out to get him and his mother too.

My plan was to ask the neighbor to give her my contact information, but we overheard him quite literally calling us crazy too without having a conversation with us in the last 7 years, so I feel that’s a waste of time.

What can I do to ask her to stop without risk of injury or a pure panic attack?

A false accusation at twelve isn’t the kind of thing most people just move past quietly, and the fact that the screaming resumed the second real stress showed up says everything about how thin that peace actually was.

I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD this year. Due to college, I’ve hit a wall, and I could no longer manage my problems and way of functioning.

I’ve tried therapy, then got the diagnosis, and I’m officially on meds.

I’m still very much struggling, but I want to believe I’m making some progress and doing something for myself.

I have very loving and supportive parents. At first, I never planned on telling either of them about therapy and everything else.

Now, her mom and sister know about it.

I got a job and paid for every session and all my other expenses myself.

Eventually, in the heat of the moment, I told my mom about therapy, and since then she’s known about everything for the last ±6 months.

I asked her not to tell my dad.

Eventually, my sister also found out, so now he’s the only one in the dark.

She’s scared her father will be hurt.

Now the issue is that I do trust my dad, and I know he would support me, but I have this thing where I want to seem capable in front of him. I’m also having more trouble being vulnerable with him than with my mom.

They give me everything and every opportunity to thrive in college, and yet I struggle.

I am also his child, and he deserves to know what’s going on in my life, but I’m scared of coming off as someone who’s making excuses for themselves. I will tell him everything eventually, but I’m scared he’ll be hurt that I only told my mom and not him at first.

Sometimes it’s easier to open up to one parent before the other, especially when you’re still trying to process everything yourself. That doesn’t mean she loves or trusts her dad any less.

At the same time, she probably shouldn’t wait too much longer.

If he’s as loving and supportive as she says he is, there’s a good chance he’ll understand. He’ll probably just be happy that she’s getting the help she needs and starting to feel like herself again.

Imagine going to a store with a coupon, but when you see your receipt, you think the total should be less because of the coupon. What would you do if the cashier explained that the coupon didn’t work as expected? Would you complain to the cashier, complain to corporate, or simply accept that it didn’t work out the way you had expected?

In this story, one cashier who works at a video game store explains a quirk with their store coupons. Most customers understand, but one customer complained.

I thought you wanted your money back?

So this happened to me when I was still employed at a popular video game retail chain. Won’t name names but let’s say that it’s the place to stop for your game. I worked there for about eight years and this occurred around the last year I was with that company when I was a store manager.

Now, in my area, we have about five of these stores. Because of this, it’s not unusual for another store to send someone to you if you had a particular product in stock that a guest wanted. No worries, we’ll take care of them.

I got this kind of call that day and was sent a guest who wanted to pick up a pre-owned version of a newer video game that had just come out (I don’t remember what game it was, only that it was still pretty new at the time).

As he came up, I already had the game pulled and was starting to take care of him. He had the paid membership that we offer and a $5 off coupon.

Coupons aren’t always a good deal.

Now this is where I have to throw some math out at you.

At the time, the membership gave people a 10% discount on any used games they purchased. This game was $54.99 and proudly advertised the discounted price of $49.49 for members on the label.

However, coupons worked in the system in a quirky way. Essentially, any coupons took off the “standard price” of the game in the system. In this case, it was $54.99 making it $49.99 with the coupon before the 10% discount took effect.

I usually explained this to guests before they used the coupon because most of the time they expect it to take off the discount price, i.e. $49.49 – $5 = $44.49. This also leads most people to believe that they’re losing money by using a coupon.

OP thought this customer understood.

After explaining how it works however, most people understood and were okay with it or decided to just wait and save their coupon for later.

Once again, no worries. Glad I could help.

After going through my usual spiel with this guest and explaining the coupon oddity, he said that’s fine and we finished up the transaction.

As I hand him his receipt he takes a look at it and promptly says, “Wait, this price is wrong.”

The customer didn’t understand.

What do you mean?

“It should’ve been cheaper. The coupon should’ve taken off the lower price.”

No, no, no…I already explained this as I attempt to tell him the spiel again.

“No. The coupon should take off the lower price that’s advertised!”

OP decided to make it right.

At this point, he was starting to become irate. This being my last year at this job, I was pretty done with most things. Cue my malicious compliance.

What this person didn’t realize is just how much he “supposedly lost” by it not taking off the lower price.

It was a 50 cent difference…

I looked at him and said, “You know what, okay then. I’ll refund the difference for you, sir.”

Now, the customer tries to backpedal.

I popped my register, grabbed two quarters and forcefully placed them on the counter.

He sees the two quarters and I can physically see the gears turn in his head.

Here you go.

“Aw man, I mean…that wasn’t my point.”

That’s not what the customer wanted.

Okay, then what was your point? I thought you wanted your money back?

“Nah, man. It should just work the other way.”

I already explained why it does that, it’s not going to change but I am happy to take care of you still.

This led to him wanting to speak with a district manager (DM).

Let’s see how the DM handled it.

We didn’t give out our DM’s number to just anyone, they usually call you. I contacted my current DM at the time, explained the situation, and left it in his hands.

I told the guest my DM will call you and he accepted this and left.

I later came to find out that this wasn’t the guest’s first time complaining about this. He had already been told before how it works and I guess still decided to cause more issues with me at a different store. My DM informed me that he didn’t do anything more than explain what I had already explained to him and I never heard about it again.

Moral of the story; always pick your battles, especially when only 50 cents is on the line.

Also, to answer the burning question, he didn’t take the 50 cents.

That’s frustrating for both people. I agree with the customer that the coupon should work differently. I get his frustration. It’s not the cashier’s fault, but corporate needs to change how this works.
