When you move in with roommates, it would be nice to think that mutual respect would be a given. After all, you’re all in the same boat, all sharing a house likely to make living in your city affordable, and respecting one another to ensure that you all at least feel safe and welcome in your home seems like the least that you could do for each other. But alas, not all folk are made equal, and everyone likely has very different ideas about what behaviours, levels of messiness and cleanliness, disruption and jokes or messages are acceptable. That’s why it’s important to set clear boundaries from day one.

The guy in this story was wise to this, and set one clear boundary from the day that he and his roommate moved in together. He was a chill roommate but had one rule: don’t go into my room without permission. And that boundary seems more than reasonable – after all, in a shared house there is so little private space that is your own, that your bedroom is a sanctuary and should rightfully remain that way. Besides, he had a history with people snooping.

But his roommate really wasn’t getting the message.

My roommate (22, female) and I (20, male) have lived together for about six months.

One of the things that was agreed upon when I moved in with her was that I don’t want anyone else, including her, in my room.

I grew up in a household where my privacy wasn’t respected, and I would routinely get home to my parents tearing through my room without me in there and without my permission. It still gives me anxiety.

Let’s see how the roommate reacted to that boundary.

My roommate is usually good about honoring my request. However, lately she’s been making a fuss about the request.

My roommate’s parents were super good about honoring her privacy, and she’s super open about her space. Lately, she’s been making small comments like, “why do you care who’s in your room if you have nothing to hide?” and “well what if I need something from your room?”

And when she does this, I always tell her that it’s not about having anything to hide, it’s that it gives me a lot of anxiety, but she doesn’t seem to get it.

And now, she’s starting to disrespect his wishes.

A couple days ago, I got home from work to find my roommate in my room.

When I confronted her about it, she said she was quickly dropping my laundry onto my bed. I told her that she should have just left it on the couch until I got home, and that she didn’t need to go into my room.

I usually do the laundry, but because my roommate got laid off from her job and I didn’t, she started doing it, so after confronting her I brushed off the incident as a one time thing.

But then it happened again.

Yesterday though I found her in my room again, this time because she needed to borrow my charger. I told her again that I didn’t want her in my room.

I was trying to keep calm but I’ll admit I was very agitated.

She said I was overreacting and that it wasn’t a big deal and I should just suck it up. And today she was giving me the silent treatment, so I’m genuinely wondering if I overreacted.

AITA?

This guy was clear about his boundary from the beginning.

He does not want to live with the anxiety that his parents caused him, and now his roommate is causing him that very same anxiety in the present.

Either she just doesn’t get it, or she doesn’t respect him or his mental health at all.

And now that he knows that about her, his anxiety – which the boundary probably helped with – is probably through the roof again.

Regardless of whether or not she thinks that the boundary is ridiculous or one that he shouldn’t have if he has nothing to hide, her complete lack or respect for it shows where she thinks she stands. And it’s totally unacceptable. The boundary should have been enough but now, if he wants to keep living with his roommate despite the red flags, he’s going to have to take more serious action like getting a lock for his door. Because she pushed him to that.

Grandparents are allowed to have opinions about family traditions. They may even have very strong opinions about them. But once your disagreement over a baby’s dedication reaches your adult son’s boss, things may have traveled a little beyond friendly family input.

One 33-year-old father and his wife recently welcomed their second child and are preparing for his dedication, a common Christian practice where they live. Traditionally, children at their church are dedicated during Sunday services, but the couple wanted something smaller.

Instead, they arranged to have the ceremony during a weekday evening service with just family and a few guests. Their church approved the plan, and similar weekday dedications have apparently happened at other branches, although theirs would be the first at this particular parish.

There is, however, one person who absolutely does not approve: Grandma.

As a founding member of the church, she believes her grandson deserves the traditional Sunday ceremony. And when her son refused to change the date, she didn’t simply express her disappointment.

She started recruiting reinforcements.

AITA for refusing to change the dedication date of my son

I 33m and married to my 28f since 2022, we just had our 2nd child in April and in line with the common Christian practice of our environment, we are to dedicate the child in about 3 months.

However, instead of dedicating our child on Sunday as is traditional, we have decided to keep it small and do it on a weekday with only our family and a few guests and this has been permitted/ approved by our church especially in light of the general decline of the economy of my country

My mother is strongly of the opinion that despite the church’s approval, we should dedicate our child on Sunday.

Very specific.

When I asked why she has stated as follows:

That we are hiding the child and doing the dedication at night. ( it’s an evening service byw 4pm – 6pm)

She is a founding member of the church, and her grandchild’s dedication shouldn’t be hidden.

That I will be the dirst to do it in my church and set a precedent (true, I’ll be the first in my parish, but it has been done is several other branches of the church).

Fair points.

I have stated it is a decision made by me and my wife, and while she has her objections, we see no reason to change it.

My mum has been calling everyone, my uncle’s, my in-laws, my boss, and crying the phone trying to get me to change my mind.

I don’t think I’m wrong, but everybody is of the opinion that I should do what she wants to stop her crying as I’m her only surviving son.

Oof.

I see no reason to change my plans, but with the pressure from everyone at my mum’s instigation,

Commenters largely sided with the parents. Grandma’s disappointment isn’t necessarily unreasonable—particularly if she’s a founding member of the church and a Sunday dedication carries significant meaning to her. She may genuinely see this as an important family and religious tradition rather than simply a scheduling preference.

But the child’s parents still get to make the decision.

They aren’t refusing to dedicate their son, excluding Grandma, or secretly inventing their own ceremony. They discussed an alternative with their church, received approval, and chose something that better suits their circumstances. The fact that it’s unusual in their parish doesn’t make it improper, especially when other branches have already done the same.

Where Grandma’s reaction becomes much harder to defend is the campaign to overrule them. Calling relatives and in-laws is one thing; contacting her adult son’s boss while crying about his baby’s dedication date takes the disagreement somewhere it never needed to go.

Giving in may stop the phone calls this time, but it could also teach everyone involved that enough pressure can override the parents’ decisions.

Small towns have a way of blurring the line between your job and your actual life.

One woman working patient registration at her local hospital helped check in a man for his appointment near the end of her shift, a completely routine interaction that ended with a simple thank you.

Later that same day, she ran into him again at the grocery store, this time in the floral department, and he immediately expected the same help he’d gotten from her at work.

When she explained she couldn’t assist him outside her actual job, he looked genuinely confused, as if her role somehow followed her home.

I live in a small town and work at our little hospital doing patient registration.

I checked in a patient for an appointment toward the end of my shift and answered some questions for him. He thanked me for my help.

But when she went to run errands after work, she ran into the same customer once again.

After work, I went to the grocery store, where I saw him again in the floral department as I walked past.

He recognized me and complained that there was no one there to help him. He looked at me expectantly.

That’s when she had to state what should have been an obvious fact.

I had to explain that I could not help him everywhere, only where I actually work.

He seemed genuinely puzzled. I suggested he ring the bell at the counter and wait for someone to come.

Introducing two people you know is always a tiny social gamble. Best-case scenario, everyone gets along, and you’ve helped create a new friendship. Slightly more complicated scenario: they get along so well that they start making plans without you.

One 28-year-old woman found herself in exactly that awkward territory after her longtime friend Audrey introduced her to a new neighbor, Kayla.

Kayla had recently moved to town for a new job and admitted she was struggling to meet people. Since the woman knew how intimidating it could be to make friends—especially as someone who’s fairly shy herself—she exchanged numbers with Kayla and encouraged her to reach out.

Then came what seemed like the perfect opportunity. Another friend, Hannah, was hosting a girls’ dinner with around 10 people, several of whom didn’t know one another. The woman invited Kayla, figuring it could help her start building a social circle.

There was just one potentially uncomfortable detail: Audrey wasn’t invited.

And when Audrey found out, the woman didn’t exactly tell her the real reason why.

AITA for inviting my friends’s neighbor to an event?

My (28F) friend Audrey (27F) recently introduced me to her new neighbor Kayla (28F) who had recently moved in across the hall.

Audrey and I were catching up when she decided to call over her new neighbor from across the hall, Kayla. We spent the evening chatting and Kayla mentioned she had just moved here for a job starting next month, and doesn’t know any people in the area yet, besides Audrey.

She noted she has been struggling because she finds it difficult to make friends and doesn’t know how to approach the situation in a new town. Kayla and I exchanged phone numbers I told her to reach out for plans on any weekend that she wants to.

How lovely.

Shortly after, about a week later, I got invited to a girl’s dinner party by my long time friend Hannah (26F). Hannah is one of those girls who seems to have a million friends- she is extremely loving a supportive to all of her friends. She continuously invites me to events that she hosts, which I appreciate as I am typically more on the shy side.

I reached out to Kayla and invited her along. I thought this would be a great opportunity to meet some girls from the area. I figured there would be a variety of guests there- approximately ten girls would be attending and we had not all met before. Hannah even included in her agenda for the night to have an introduction for all the people who had not met.

The issue is that I did not invite Audrey. I have known Audrey just about my entire life and I love her like a sister. But she did not make a good impression on Hannah when they first met.

Oh boy.

Audrey is more out there tends to take over the conversation when I am around and made a joke at my expense.

Like I mentioned, Hannah loves all of her friends fiercely. The joke did honestly hurt my feelings, but I brushed it off.

However, Hannah shared she found Audrey to be a bit much and didn’t appreciate how she treated me that night. Since then, I have chosen to keep them separate with plans to ensure there is no awkwardness.

Fair enough.

So now, I have invited my friend’s neighbor to an event but not the friend that introduced us.

Audrey is upset- and to mitigate any reason to tell her that Hannah doesn’t care for her- I told her that I was only able to invite one person and chose Kayla so that she could get to meet some people.

I don’t know if that was the best choice- to invite Kayla at all, or to lie to Audrey to avoid telling her that my friend doesn’t like her. AITA?

Commenters were somewhat divided on the situation, but much of the criticism wasn’t about inviting Kayla. Once Audrey introduced the two women and they exchanged numbers, Kayla became her own person and potential friend—not someone Audrey permanently gets first dibs on socially.

The trickier part was the lie.

It makes sense that the woman didn’t want to tell Audrey, “Hannah doesn’t like you and doesn’t want you at her events.” That would probably create unnecessary drama between two people she’s intentionally kept separate. But saying she was only allowed one guest when that wasn’t true also created a problem that didn’t need to exist. If Audrey ever learns otherwise, the exclusion may feel considerably more personal.

There’s another uncomfortable issue underneath all of this: Audrey apparently made a joke at her friend’s expense that genuinely hurt her feelings, and Hannah noticed it immediately. Keeping Audrey and Hannah apart may avoid awkwardness, but it doesn’t address why Audrey feels comfortable treating her lifelong friend that way.

Inviting Kayla wasn’t necessarily a betrayal. But managing Audrey’s feelings with a made-up explanation may have turned a fairly reasonable decision into a much messier one.

Sending money to family can get complicated quickly, especially when one person is funding a project from hundreds or thousands of miles away and has to trust somebody else to actually make it happen.

One 36-year-old man knows that dynamic well. After growing up in a working-class family in Eastern Europe, he eventually moved abroad and found a good job. He and his sister now regularly send money home, where their mother lives with their 27-year-old brother.

When the family home’s aging bathroom desperately needed an upgrade, the siblings came up with what sounded like a fair arrangement. The older brother and sister would split the cost, while their younger brother—who doesn’t work and lives in the house—would coordinate the workers and oversee the project.

There was only one condition before the money changed hands: he needed to provide a breakdown of the expenses along with receipts or invoices.

The younger brother agreed and urgently pushed for the money so they wouldn’t lose the workers.

Then the payment arrived, the workers didn’t, and getting those promised receipts suddenly became a much bigger ask.

AITAH for asking for my renovation money back after my brother refused to show me the receipts?

I (36M) was born and raised in a working-class family in Eastern Europe. My dad died when I was 10 and we struggled financially for most of my childhood.

I now live abroad and have a good job, so I help my family when I can. My sister (33F), who also lives abroad, does the same. Our younger brother (27M) still lives with our mom. He doesn’t work and mostly depends on the money my sister and I send home.

I have helped him quite a lot over the years. When he graduated, I paid for him to go to New York. I bought him a laptop and other things. I once tried to help him find a job, but he became extremely angry, insulted me, and stopped speaking to me for six months. He rarely leaves the house and has become very isolated.

Wow, what a good brother.

A few months ago, I suggested renovating the bathroom in our family home. It is very old and in bad condition, and I wanted our mom to finally have a decent bathroom.

My sister and I agreed to split the cost. Our brother’s contribution would be organizing the workers and supervising the renovation because he is the one living there.

Before we sent the money, he kept rushing me. He said the workers were available right now and that if I didn’t act immediately, we would lose them. I told him I was willing to send the money, but I wanted a list of all the expenses and receipts or invoices for everything. He agreed.

Fair enough.

As soon as I sent my half, everything changed. Suddenly he was too busy to answer my calls. First, the workers were coming in a few days. Then it became a few weeks, etc. So far, he has only bought tiles, a sink and a toilet, and all of it is sitting in the garage. No work has started.

I kept asking him for the expense list. Every time he said he would send it later. After I asked again, he completely lost his temper.

He insulted me, accused me of trying to control him and said he couldn’t be bothered to give me a breakdown of the costs. His exact words were “I cannot be bothered to open my laptop for you right now”. According to him, my role was to send the money and then stay out of it.

That’s wild.

At that point, I called the company that supplied the bathroom materials and asked to return everything. I completed the return paperwork and arranged for a transport company to collect the materials because my brother said he would not return them himself.

When I told him, he became furious. He said I had no right to return something he had bought, even though it was bought with the money my sister and I sent specifically for the renovation.

He also said there would be “consequences” if I went through with it.

He asked for it though…

I know returning everything means my mom still won’t have her bathroom renovated, and the materials are already at the house. Part of me wonders if I should have waited longer or tried to find another solution.

But I also don’t trust my brother with the money anymore, especially when he refuses to show us where it went.

AITA for cancelling the renovation and arranging to return everything so we can recover the money?

Commenters largely sided with the older brother, and the issue wasn’t simply that the renovation was taking longer than expected. Delays happen. Workers cancel, schedules change, and home projects have a remarkable ability to become more complicated than anticipated.

Refusing to account for someone else’s money is different.

The younger brother agreed to provide receipts and an expense breakdown before his siblings sent anything. Once he had the funds, he repeatedly delayed doing so before eventually declaring that he “couldn’t be bothered” to open his laptop. That’s a pretty significant change from the urgency he showed when he needed the money transferred.

Returning the materials may unfortunately delay their mother’s new bathroom, but leaving everything as-is doesn’t guarantee she’ll get one either. Right now, some fixtures are sitting in a garage, no construction has started, and the person responsible for managing the project refuses to explain where the money went.

The older siblings can still renovate the bathroom later with a different arrangement. Recovering what they can now simply gives them the opportunity to do that without relying on someone who has already broken the terms they agreed upon.

And the vague warning about “consequences” certainly doesn’t make handing him more control sound like the safer option.

There are plenty of customer-service rules that feel arbitrary. Requiring proof that you are actually the person whose package you’re attempting to take home is not particularly high on that list.

One retail worker’s store serves as a pickup location for packages that delivery drivers can’t leave at customers’ homes. The policy is simple—and apparently important enough to warrant a large sign: customers must present a physical government-issued ID before an employee can release a package.

Most people can probably understand the logic. Names and addresses aren’t exactly state secrets, and “trust me, that’s mine” isn’t the world’s strongest security system.

One customer, however, arrived without an ID and asked whether providing her name and address would be good enough. The employee politely explained that it wouldn’t, and she left to retrieve it without much fuss.

About an hour later, she returned with the required identification.

Problem solved, right?

Not quite. Apparently, that extra trip had given her plenty of time to decide that the store’s attempt to protect her package was actually an insult.

Are you saying you don’t trust your customers?!

This happened yesterday and I’m still giggling. My store happens to be a package drop off location for when drivers can’t/won’t leave a package at the customer’s door.

There is a very strict rule of the customer presenting their physical government issued ID to us before we’ll give them their package.

Most customers understand why this rule is in place and are fine with it. This customer was not.

Oh boy.

Customer: walks in and sees the big sign say that they need their ID “I forgot my ID at home. If I give you my name and address, can I get my package?” Me: “sorry, no. You need your ID” Customer: “alright I’ll be back”

The customer didn’t seem upset when they left and I went back to cataloguing the merchandise that had been water damaged by a freak accident. About an hour later the customer returns.

Me: “Welcome back” Customer: “Give me my package. I don’t see why you wouldn’t give me it earlier. Who else is going to have my name and address?” Me: “It’s the rule. It’s to make sure that we’re giving the right package to the right person” I take their ID from them and go look for the package.

Just following the rules…

Customer: “Are you saying that you don’t trust your customers?!”

Me: walking back with the package and confirming as I walk that the information matches “I’ve never met you and don’t know you. We just want to make sure that you’re receiving the right package.” I hand the ID back and move to scan the package out

Customer: snatches ID from my hand “well that’s just stupid and poor customer service. Now give me my package” Me: “in a moment. I need to scan it out of our system first” Customer: Huff’s impatiently.

Sir, with respect…relax.

Me: has finished scanning out the package and gesture to the signature pad “alright last step, please sign and hit okay with the pen” Customer: “unbelievable. What are you going to do if I refuse to sign?” Me: “if you don’t sign, I won’t release the package ” Customer: angrily signs and throws the pen down

Me: making direct eye contact with them and hitting the okay button with the pen “alright. All done. The package is all yours” Customer: snatches the package out of my hand and stomps out the door

Boss: comes up from the back where they were dealing with the landlord over who is paying for the water damage “did she actually ask if we didn’t trust our customers?”

Everyone’s gonna have a good laugh about this.

Me: chuckling “yup”

Boss: shaking their head “how do you get to be an adult and still think like that?”

Me: “dunno but they’re probably also convinced that any day now a Nigerian prince is going to make them rich”

The employee and their boss were still laughing about the encounter afterward, and it’s not difficult to understand why.

The customer’s indignation seemed to miss the entire point of an identification policy. The store wasn’t accusing her of being dishonest. Employees simply had no way of knowing she was actually the intended recipient until she proved it—which is exactly why the same rule applies to everyone.

Her argument that nobody else would know her name and address wasn’t particularly convincing either. That information isn’t necessarily difficult for another person to obtain, and a package pickup location probably shouldn’t gamble someone’s belongings on the assumption that anyone who knows two pieces of personal information must be trustworthy.

Even after producing her ID, she continued fighting every step of the process, including asking what would happen if she refused to sign for the package. The answer was wonderfully straightforward: she wouldn’t get it.

Customer service doesn’t mean abandoning basic security procedures because a customer finds them annoying. If anything, she should probably appreciate that a stranger can’t walk into the store, recite her address and leave carrying her package.

If the store trusted everyone who knew your name and address, you’d probably have a much bigger complaint when someone else walked out with your package.

This is a long one but I still enjoy it. Long ago I was dumb enough to rent a house within the control of an HOA. I have since learned better.

He knew it was a mistake getting into this system!

This property was managed by a company called (city I lived in) properties they had purchased the house within the HOA and rented to us but given that I wasn’t actually in the HOA I was just a renter it became a really convoluted mess very quickly.

We were told that we would need to adhere to the HOA guidelines, but we couldn’t talk to the HOA directly nor would we be able to receive a copy of the rules but that it wasn’t that serious most of their tenants didn’t ever hear from them.

Should have said no right then but I was young and dumb.

He explains how it went down!

The day I arrived at the property to move my stuff in I was informed by my landlord that I was being fined 100 dollars for my trash cans being visible from the street.

Apparently because my trashcan was delivered by the city two days prior to a place I didn’t have access to, it was my responsibility to have driven across town and broken into the backyard to move the trash cans.

The first infraction is a warning they never passed on the second is 100 dollars.

UH OH…

They said I was responsible for it especially after the warning I literally never received.

Then they told me that they would only accept payment in person going forward even though my deposit and first months rent were paid online, and it must be through a money order in person.

Then they informed me the office for (the city I lived in) properties which I’d never been to is actually a two hour drive away totally not in (the city I lived in.)

I told them this is my first day in I got the keys a hour ago there’s no way I could have done this correctly. Surely it could be explained to the HOA that this couldn’t be my fault.

It gets WORSE!

They said no I couldn’t talk to the HOA because I wasn’t a member couldn’t see the rules I was supposed to follow because the HOA only allows copies for members.

Then they pointed me to a single line in the rental agreement that said I would follow the rules.

After far more back and forth than should be required for something so ridiculous we came to an agreement that they would cover the fine but for some reason it was impossible to wave the record of the infractions and I would be half way to eviction on day one.

That’s INSANE!

All of it counted against me but they’d do the 100 dollars.

I asked if there were any more rules that I needed to be aware of up front since I couldn’t get a copy of the rules.

They told me I had to mow every Thursday because that and the trashcan thing is what typically gets people in trouble.

They do a “walk by” Fridays if we mowed on Wednesday it would be too long by then if we did it Friday they’d count it as not done.

He was trying to be careful with it all along!

I mow the lawn every Thursday for months and kept my head down I never even spoke to a neighbor or did anything to draw attention to myself.

Around 3/4ths of the way through the lease I get a 400 dollar fine on a Friday with a photo taken nearly in my backyard of my grass with a ruler next to it which I had just mowed the day before.

I’d missed a single tuft of grass behind the AC unit it was less than half an inch above the rest of it they’d walked through the yard to the back corner with a ruler to find an issue.

They were just being so mean!

They said this puts me on my final warning before eviction unless I could prove it was cut by a specific landscaping company owned by someone in the HOA. Apparently the HOA only accepts work from them and it’s the only way to reverse a fine.

I fought it hard but ultimately I paid it because I was almost out. Then I started to pay to have it done by that company and kept receipts just in case

Around 2 months or so left in the lease I get another notice this time it’s a 600 dollar fine and a formal letter stating that I would be evicted and a picture of my grass fully mowed.

No ruler no indication that anything was really wrong just a wide shot of my house with cut grass. Since the last time I was told that a receipt proving it was done by them could clear it up.

That’s CRAZY!

I called the landlord up offer to show them the copy of the receipt told them to look at this picture or come by with a ruler but it was done correctly.

I figured it was a misunderstanding and there’s no way I’m actually getting evicted over this.

A woman who I’d never spoken with answers the phone and comes in hot from the get go. I calmly explained the situation to her, she isn’t having any of it cuts me off mid sentence says I have to pay 600 today then they are going to evict me.

Refused to look at the receipt or the photo tells me the buck stopped there and it’s my fault for being a bad tenant and to just save my breath and start packing.

He was so done with them!

I told her I didn’t recognize her voice and that I had been dealing with someone else. I asked how long she’d been there. “2 days I just started.”

I ask to speak to someone else who might be more experience. “There’s nobody else. We don’t need to continue any further than you giving me my money” I started to say I think that I need to speak to someone else again “Nobody else works here and no one cares what you think. Stop trying to get out of it and be a man”

I’m a pretty easy going guy but now it was the principle of the thing.

This is where he knew he had to do something about it!

I was like I’m pretty sure someone cares what I think and I know they didn’t just hire you and leave you alone in the office. “Then go write your opinion on Google or something where we can all go back to ignoring you, if you call back you’re only ever going to talk to me because this isn’t worth anyone else’s time.”

I said oh don’t worry I will get right on that and I promise you’re going to care in the end. Then this woman started listing off review websites saying that they don’t care and no one cares about me.

He was simply doing what he was asked!

Go to yelp go to this place and this place because no one cares. I wrote them all down. Asked for her name, she gave that too and I wrote that down. Then I told her I’d be in touch.

Cue the malicious compliance.

This was early in the morning and I had to go to work but it was an office job that allowed me some leeway in when my work could be done as long as all of it got done before the end of the week. I cleared my whole day I didn’t get a single other thing done.

I found every online site that even halfway mentioned them and I wrote an entire scathing review on every one of them. Not just copy and paste but fully hashed out in every single place fresh.

Things got trickier!

I even contacted the local news organization though they never got back to me but the attempt was made. I ripped them a new one in every method I could.

Their website, yelp, Google, Zillow every single place that had a message box. I was doing it in bed up to the point I passed out late that night.

Most of these places had no reviews or one 5 star review so it definitely didn’t go unnoticed. 8am I get a call from the VP of the property company.

She’d flown in from Florida where she was on vacation to figure out why they suddenly had all these super negative super specific reviews.

He went on and on!

I said “oh so there is someone else who works there?” The VP tells me that she’s read the reviews and that while she’s sorry this was my experience that this was liable or whatever since I wrote it in a public place and that they’d sue.

I told her it’s not liable if it’s a true account of my experience which it was. I added that her new employee even told me the places I could write my opinion because no one was ever going to care what I said.

I was just following instructions.

He explained her everything!

They were also evicting me based on something that was demonstrably false so it’s not like I had anything to lose.

She got really quiet then puffs herself up and started getting an attitude says I’d be hearing from her lawyers soon. I said oh great, were they on vacation too? She hung up.

I think it was an hour or two later I get another call from the president of the property company this time.

Finally things started getting back to normal!

They looked at my receipt for the lawn care and looked at the photo and saw that it was very obviously wrong and were dropping the charge, we were not going to be evicted.

Not only that but they’d straightened it out with the HOA and the first two infractions were also dropped.

My 400 dollar infraction was actually only a warning as a first infraction so I’d be getting that money back, and to top it all off the wretched woman who told me that no one would ever care what I think was fired by him personally before the call which is what took the hour or two.

And the icing on top!

Apparently she was in tears.

They asked if I would take down or at least revise some of my reviews so it didn’t ruin their companies reputation. I left them all up even after I moved out and never answered another call from them again.

Someone’s dog may or may not have also taken a dump underneath their door mat and accidentally stomped on it after a two hour drive to drop off the last money order.

Impossible to tell really but who cares anyway.

Catching the bouquet at a wedding is supposed to come with one fairly harmless consequence: everyone joking that you’ll be the next person to get married. For one 15-year-old, it came with a considerably more uncomfortable wedding tradition.

Years ago, she attended a small-town Pennsylvania church wedding with her grandparents, who had helped make the entire celebration possible. The bride and groom were relatively new to the congregation, and church members had generously pitched in with money, decorations and planning to give the couple a proper wedding.

At the reception, the teenager was perfectly content sitting beside her grandmother when the bouquet toss began. Grandma wanted her nowhere near it, but after some encouragement from the pastor’s wife and the bride, she eventually allowed her granddaughter to participate—with strict instructions to stand in the very back.

The teen had no intention of actually catching anything.

Unfortunately, the bride apparently had quite an arm. The bouquet sailed directly into the girl’s chest, leaving her little choice but to grab it.

And that’s when Grandma realized catching some flowers was about to become the least awkward part of the tradition.

For a bit of background information as to how I knew these people; I grew up with my grandparents who were regular attendees of the Methodist Church in a very small town in rural PA.

One day, a young couple randomly appear at the churches door steps and ask to not only have the wedding at our church; but also pay for it. Now the to-be Bride and Groom were both drunks so the church was wary that they were being taken advantage of.

My grandparents were ready to jump at the idea with full go power and help them out; so as a compromise the pastor said we would do it, if they could commit themselves to being a part of our Fellowship.

Fiar enough.

After two months of attendance, the wedding plans were finally under way. I remember the church and my grandparents graciously dipping into their own personal wallets just to decorate and throw together this wedding for these two newbies.

The church had been struggling for Fellowship since it’s really rural PA so they were super excited to have new Members join our church.

On the day of the wedding, two pews up, I notice the strong odor of skunk. It’s emiating off of a guy who looks rough for wear, jumping around in his seat anxiously or excitedly.

Uh oh…

Every few minutes he would return back outside by leaving the wedding and come back smelling stronger of skunk and seemingly more calm a bit. I recognized the signs of addiction and paid him no mind.

After the wedding in the fellowship hall for the reception, the Bride was getting ready to toss the bouquet – per tradition.

“Cmon, minuscule (my real name obviously being censored)! Cmon!” The pastors wife beckoned for me to join in on the catching of the bouquet. “No. You stay right here.” My grandma demanded that I stay sat right next to her, because again, I was 15 and she didn’t want me participating in that.

Well, she has a point.

The Bride caught wind of what was happening between me, my grandma, and the pastors wife; so she said “cmon, Miniscule, it’ll be fun.” My grandma caved to the peer pressure and said “fine but you stand in the way back, far away from everyone else.”

Despite us being in an indoor, small fellowship hall, the Bride tossed the bouqet with what felt like the force of God himself.

I dare didn’t move or attempt to catch it because my grandma would’ve accused me of “doing too much and being too involved”.

Good for you.

However the bouqet landed, smack dab in the center of my chest, I had no other option but to grasp my hands around it. Everyone cheered, and I was happy to just have a pretty bouquet.

Then the Bride took off her garner and the Groom tossed it to a crowd of men. Out of everyone in attendance who could’ve caught it, the jumpy skunk man (who may have been on other harder stuff) caught the garner.

Now I know this next part is controversial, and not everyone does it, but apparently they did it!

Oh no they didn’t.

I went from admiring my acquired bouquet to suddenly being beckoned to the center of the reception hall to sit on a chair. My grandmother is anxiously jumping out of her seat at this point, she knows what’s going to happen.

The crowd starts cheering, laughing and clapping rhythmically, they play a song my anxiety tunes out because I am so nervous, and mr. skunk man presents himself at my feet.

He’s going to put the garner on my leg.

Oh. My. Goodness.

He starts to work his way over my feet with the garner, I cover my face of pure embarassment and shyness. Now, even to this day, people don’t believe I am 24. I am always told I look a bit older or they expected me to be older when I reveal my age — ouch.

Needless to say, minus my grandparents, and a few of the church members still in attendance at the reception, no one else really knew I was 15. Not the Brides family, not the Grooms family, not the Bridal party and certainly not the photographer who was happily snapping away pictures as I dug my hands into my face for what felt like forever.

“She’s jailbait!” I hear my grandmother anxiously screaming at Mr. Skunk, warning him not to go too far because she definitely will lay him out and expose him infront of everyone.

HAHA.

Bride and Groom had a rough marriage and ended up divorcing. Needless to say, I have a photo of me and the Bride at her wedding, but I don’t have a photo of this — anymore, luckily. It did exist.

All I have as far as concrete proof that this happened is just my grandmas word until she passes away. But ever since I caught the bouquet, no. I wasnt the next one married. I’m not even engaged currently, but I am in a relationship.

That’s the last time you’ll see me catch a bouqet at a wedding, I got reversal bad luck or something and must’ve shared that with the Bride and Groom.

There are wedding traditions that are probably better left in the past, and having the man who catches the garter put it on the woman who catches the bouquet certainly makes a strong case for the list.

The teenager hadn’t even wanted to participate in the bouquet toss, much less volunteer for whatever came afterward. More importantly, she was 15. Most of the people at the reception apparently didn’t know that, including the man who caught the garter, so it’s hard to blame him for initially going along with a tradition everyone around him was actively encouraging.

Still, the mental image of a mortified teenager sitting in a chair while a room full of adults claps along—and Grandma starts shouting that she’s “jailbait”—is enough to make anyone reconsider mandatory audience-participation wedding games.

Thankfully, the moment seems to have become more of an absurd family story than anything else. The photographic evidence is apparently long gone, although Grandma can still verify every horrifying detail.

And despite the bouquet’s supposed predictive powers, it didn’t exactly work. Nearly a decade later, its reluctant catcher still hasn’t made it down the aisle.

Considering how that reception went, maybe the flowers decided they’d already done enough.

I am also going to be registering her five kids for school in the next two weeks which is another load but I can manage it.

My problem is, I desperately need a car. I have to commute more than one hour with transit for work and school will be a huge issue as well if I don’t get a car by the end of next month.

I got free coffee from Starbucks for about 6 months

About 15 years ago I was working in NYC and I would take advantage of the free refills that Starbucks had for drip coffee.

The offer was really meant for people sitting in the store but I would buy coffee in the morning and then bring my cup back around 1 or 2p for another cup.

Apparently in NYC, they weren’t allowed to actually refill the cup for health code reasons or something.

So they’d throw out the cup and give you a new one.

That’s when I realized there was a loophole here.

This is somewhat genius.

I kept five cups and brought them home.

Then I started bringing one in the morning to Starbucks and I’d get a free “refill”.

I’d do this every day and I’d end up with 5 gross paper Starbucks cups at work and then I’d bring them home on Friday and repeat the next week.

One day, this loophole didn’t work.

I did this for months, not paying for coffee at all, until one day I brought in my cup and handed it to the barista for a refill only to realize that all of the cups behind the counter were different.

It was getting close to the holidays and they’d switched to their holiday logo cups.

Well, color me embarrassed.

I started paying for coffee again after that. It was a good run though.

Lumber comes in all shapes and sizes, and you need to know what you need in order to complete a project properly.

What would you do if your manager asked you to help a customer who really didn’t have any idea what she actually needed?

That is what happened to the guy in this story, but after a number of frustrating steps, he might have actually gotten her what she needed. Then again, she might just come back tomorrow to try to return it.

How some people manage to survive into their forties is beyond me.

Part of my job is to cut lumber to customer specifications, I can’t do anything fancy like forty five degree angles, but I can make short work out of long boards.

It is always trouble when a coworker passes a customer off to you.

This tends to be one of my favorite parts of what I do because I get to be really involved in customer projects, but first I sometimes have to decipher what that project even is.

Adam, who works in sales, flagged me down and brought a woman over to me and just nodded in my direction before walking off while she was mid-sentence. I got that feeling in my gut like this was gonna be a long day.

Why are some people rude all the time?

Waving a piece of paper in my face:

“I need these pieces of lumber please. And I need them all cut.”

Not taking the paper from her (Much like Iron Man I do not like strangers handing me things)

He is being very polite, at least.

“Sure thing Ma’am, what can I get for you today?”

“I need some two-by-sixes, two-by-tens and two-by-twelves.”

“Sure thing, what length do you need those boards to be?”

She isn’t understanding.

“Yes.”

That wasn’t a yes or no question so I thought maybe she misunderstood me.

“How long do you need the boards to be Ma’am?”

Those aren’t lengths.

“Two-by-six, two-by-ten and two-by-twelve.”

At this point I figure she just doesn’t know much about lumber, so I took the piece of paper from her. Sure enough it says ” 2×6 2×10 2×12 two of each” and nothing else so I take the time to explain what this means.

Is she finally getting it?

“Ma’am the notation two-by-six means that a board is two inches thick and six inches wide, I need to know how long you would like the boards to be.”

At this point she smiles and nods her head at me like she finally understands.

Nope, she is clueless.

“Yes! I need two of those! Can you put them on a cart for me? I also need you to cut them each in half.”

Sigh

“Sure thing Ma’am, could you just point towards a board that looks long enough for your needs?”

This way might actually be cheaper anyway.

This worked quite well because she pointed to some boards immediately to her left which happened to be eight feet long. I collected her boards but ran into a problem with the two-by-twelves since I only carry them in twelve or sixteen foot lengths.

“Ma’am I don’t have any eight foot lengths of two-by-twelve but I have a sixteen foot board I can cut into quarters for you.”

It would be the exact same thing.

“Oh no that won’t do! I need two boards cut in half.”

“Well I don’t have any boards in that size that are this same length, the closest thing I have are my twelve foot boards.”

“Oh yes that will do.”

What does she want now?

Shoulder shrug. I grab the wood and take her over to my panel saw and decide to cut the two-by-twelves first since they are the most cumbersome.

It was just after I finished cutting the second board that I see her inspecting the lumber I pulled and put onto a cart for her when she motions for me to come over and see what shes looking at.

Of course they aren’t the same size.

“This isn’t right is it? These boards aren’t the same size?”

“No Ma’am they are not. The smaller one is six inches wide and the larger is ten inches wide, just like you asked for.”

Did this lady not know that wood comes in different sizes?

“No that isn’t right. These are supposed to fit together to form a box. A big square. I am making a raised planter for my garden.”

“Well I am not sure how the pieces will fit together once your planter is complete but it won’t be a square, the pieces I just cut for you are all six feet long and these other pieces will be four feet long when I cut them.”

It is fine if she doesn’t know what she is doing, but she shouldn’t pretend that she does.

“Uh-huh yeah that will make my box, but why aren’t these all the same height? That will look silly right if they are different sizes, you’ve done this before?”

“Made a planter before? Yes, but I used boards that were all the same size. Could you get your husband on the phone for me? Maybe he can explain his idea to me before I cut any more lumber?”

Whatever, lady. Just get someone on the phone.

‘”Gardener.”

“What?”

“Gardener. He is not my husband, he is my gardener and no I can’t call him. He just wrote this down for me and told me to pick these up so he can build my planters for me.”

Maybe she does know what she wants.

She had been pretty cheerful up to this point but I could see I had made her mad by assuming she was running errands for her husband. I figured a little back tracking on my part and a healthy dose of guest service smile might do the trick.

“Oh your making two planters? Oh I am sure these will fit together just fine then, your gardener probably wants one slightly deeper to better accommodate the plants. I’ll just finish up real fast.”

He is doing exactly what you asked for.

I cut the rest of her lumber as quickly as I could and was looking forward to being done so I could start working on something else when she stopped me and started examining her lumber again.

“Why are these boards longer than the others?”

“Those are the twelve inch wide boards. I didn’t have any that were eight feet long so you had me cut two twelve foot boards in half?”

Why didn’t she just have her gardener come in?

We just did this, she remembers right?

“But these will fit together right? My box will look alright?”

“Well yes. . . It will look fine but it won’t be a square your planters will be in a rectangle shape.”

She doesn’t really understand shapes.

“Right! A rectangle-square for my plants.”

What. The. Heck.

At this point I was willing to agree with anything she said so long as it got the transaction over with.

At least she is happy.

“Yes Ma’am! Rectangle-Square! I can wheel this up to the front for you if you have any other shopping to do today?”

Please God let her have some other shopping to do today.

“Oh that would be wonderful!”

Her good mood had returned

“Your so sweet! I’ll just finish gathering up a few other things.”

Big sigh of relief as I wheeled her things up front and now I can’t hear someone say Box without thinking Rectangle-Square to myself.

It seems pretty likely that she will be back to try to return the pre-cut wood.

Imagine owning property that includes a private road that leads to the beach. What would you do if a nearby HOA wanted to have access to that private road so they could easily get to the beach? Would you be okay with it or refuse to let them on your property?

In this story, a few houses had access to the private road, but then an HOA president seemed to think his whole, huge HOA neighborhood should have access.

That was the end of it for the homeowner, and everyone ended up in court.

Lawyer destroys HOA!

One of my friends is a land use attorney who told me this story about a case of his.

Originally, there existed a small HOA with about a dozen houses in a coastal region.

About half of these houses (individually, not as part of the HOA) had easement rights through a neighbor’s property, to use a private road to access a nearby beach.

An HOA president ruined the private road access for everyone.

The problems started with a new development adjacent to the existing HOA, with over one hundred new houses.

The president of this new development’s HOA somehow got the idea that the smaller HOA had easement rights to access the beach (it didn’t) and proposed merging the two into a new, larger HOA that he thought would inherit these easement rights for everyone.

Well the neighboring property owner got sick of hundreds of cars, which had no right to be there, tearing up his private road. So, he dumped some giant logs across the road and blocked off access for everyone.

The president of this new HOA then sued the property owner on behalf of the entire HOA, forcing all homeowners to pay an assessment to cover the legal costs.

The original homeowners hired a lawyer.

Enter my lawyer friend who was hired by one of the original homeowners with legitimate easement access.

He wrote up a letter to the HOA president. This thing was about 50 pages long. It included maps, diagrams, county filings, easements, along with pointing out all the relevant laws and case laws.

Any possible arguments against his points were also brought up, along with the reasons why those arguments would fail.

In short, this was a completely ironclad explanation that what the HOA president was doing was incorrect.

Let’s see what the lawyer pointed out.

Celebrating one child’s recovery should not require another child to pretend that unequal treatment never hurts.

In this family, an older brother quietly kept the household running while his younger sister battled cancer.

Instead of feeling appreciated afterward, one enormous birthday surprise left him questioning where he fit in the family.

I (19 male) have a younger sister Lily (16 female).

This would be devastating for the whole family.

She was diagnosed with cancer last year this freaked out our whole family and it was so hard on us and I love her and tried my best to do something during that hard time.

While our parents were focused on her treatment, I was taking care of cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, helping with our youngest sibling you name it.

And luckily Lily just finished her treatment and is doing great now. We’re all relieved and happy.

Two weeks ago, she celebrated both her birthday and finishing chemo. For this, our parents surprised her with a brand new car.

I was surprised not because she doesn’t deserve to be celebrated, she absolutely does, but because for the past year, my parents have repeatedly told me they couldn’t afford to help me with anything car-related.

I’ve been working and saving for my own used car, and I only ever asked them to help cover the last $700 or so.

Every time I brought it up, my dad shut it down, saying things were hard and a car just wasn’t in the budget.

He really is being treated unfairly.

Two weeks to my birthday. I didn’t expect anything over the top I know we’re not rich but after seeing what they did for Lily, I guess I thought they might surprise me, or at least offer to help me finish the car fund.

Instead, they gave me a manga book I mentioned once and a $50 Amazon gift card.

I thanked them, but I guess my disappointment was obvious because they asked me what was wrong.

I was honest and told them I was hurt not about Lily getting a car but I didn’t understand how they were saying they couldn’t help me at all. and to my surprise they told me I was being selfish, jealous, and making things all about me.

My mom said, “She survived cancer and all you can think about is yourself?”

My dad told me I should just keep working and saving I’m an adult now, after all.
