Fashion choices are personal since everyone likes different things, and as long as it is within reason, you should be able to wear what you want.

What would you do if your mother and sister were telling you that your clothing choices were embarrassing and would make people think that you are mentally ill if you wore them in public?

That is what is happening to the woman in this story, so she finally changed her clothes, but she thinks that they are out of line for trying to control what she wears.

Personally, what she says she was wearing seems pretty normal to me. Read through the full story below and see what you think.

AITA for trying to wear casual clothes in the summer but my mom and sister thinking that I am mentally ill for wear it in public?

So, I was trying to be confident since I have autism and is usually hard to go in public.

Let’s see what the issue is.

Because of it and I want to wear my favorite outfit, which is just a red shirt that is brand new and camo cargo pants, which my dad bought for me before he passed away in 2024.

So I told my mom if it will be okay to wear this for my walk, but she said to me that my clothes are too “old” and people will be staring.

Her family seems to be very controlling.

This is despite the fact that they are always clean and there are no rips anywhere and this argument went on for 50 minutes until my mom decides to call my sister to see if I’m in the right, but unfortunately she end it up took my mom’s side.

And she said that that she is dissapointed in me for not taking care of myself despite the fact, I eat healtly food, listening to peaceful music, focusing on my studies and watching movies and shows in my spare time in order to improve my mental health.

How old is she? Maybe it is time she moves out.

But both of them doesn’t even care about and instead will attack me until I agree to change them so, I did but I have been emotionally and mentally broken because of this.

And now my mom is considering kicking me out of the house because I wanted to wear completely normal clothes in public to make myself more appealing and confident to the world.

If this girl is able to, I think moving out would be the best thing for her. The family is very weird and seems to be causing a lot of issues here.

Read on to see what the people in the comments have to say about it.

If this is how they always are, it could be a form of abuse.

Finding a new place to live makes sense to me.

From what she describes, this is just a normal outfit.

I agree with this commenter, but you never know the full story.

This person seems to think that the mom and sister are stuck up, though.

I can’t imagine what about this outfit they think is weird. It seems completely normal to me. Either her mom is overbearing, or this young woman is leaving out some key details. It is hard to say which.

Assuming she didn’t leave anything out, it is clear that this young woman needs to move out and find a place of her own.

Some customers cannot be reasoned with no matter what. Imagine working as a cashier, and a customer accidentally requests cash back by pushing the wrong button on the pin pad when paying. What would you do if the customer called you a liar when you tried to explain and then refused to take their money?

In this story, one employee had to deal with this exact situation, and it’s as crazy as it sounds. Instead of simply taking his money and leaving, the customer made it into a whole situation involving multiple employees and a lot of drama.

But that was just the end. The customer was actually bringing drama everywhere he went from the moment he entered the store.

Let’s read all about it.

Guy accidentally chooses to get cash back. Refuses to take his own money

It was another normal day at the copy and print department I work at, and I see that one customer walked in. He’s a tall guy and an older dude, and the long-time employees usually sigh when they catch sight of him.

He’s a problem starter, usually catching an attitude with anyone he communicates with.

Long before he caused the scene, he was butting into me and another customer who we’re trying to make business cards. The customer asks how his day is going, and he starts this whole thing about why “How’s your day going?” is a rude question.

I forgot what he said cause he talks so fast.

This sounds like a really stressful transaction.

After he talks to different people about weird stuff, I get to checking him out and getting him on his way. I ring his prints up and he inserts his card.

After violently telling the tiny card reader he wanted his receipt printed, he puts his card in.

Then, we get to the cash back screen. I watched him pick up the touchscreen pen, and hit “$20” violently. He then goes and hits “None” about five times violently.

I stop him from entering his pin and ask “Did you want $20 cashback or no cashback? I think you hit $20 by accident.”

He gave me a look and said “I didn’t hit no cash back. I hit none. You saw me.” Then proceeded to go on about how cash back is a fraud (which is BS, but okay. Whatever. I’ll listen to him. I don’t have a choice), and somehow gets on the topic about how things like chicken at supermarkets is not real chicken.

The customer refuses to listen.

After that whole speech, I checked my monitor, and sure enough, it said “Cashback selected for $20.00.”

After he enters his pin, I then tell him that it says he selected $20 Cashback.

He was like, “Boy. I already told you No. I hit none on the screen.”

The transaction finalizes, and I pull out $20 from the register, cause he asked for $20 cashback. I hand him the receipt, and he saw the $20 bill, and asked, “What’s this?” I told him his cashback.

OP tried to see if he could refund the money.

And this is when the garbage hits the fan.

He stood up straight and raised his tone at me, saying “I said No cashback! Why you handing me this damn money?!”

I stay calm and tell him, “I can try to refund it, okay? Let me see the receipt.”

I call over from some help, and my fellow associate said, “Yeah. Idk how to refund cashbacks. You should ask the manager.”

I call the manager over, and she told him, “Yeah. I don’t think we can refund cashbacks.”

The guy probably didn’t understand what cashback really was.

He then says, “Well, I won’t take it. I didn’t ask for no cashback. I have enough money in my wallet. See?” He then pulls out his wallet and opens the money pouch to show us, for some reason.

My manager then calls the help desk at the Office Depot headquarters in Florida, and they said that they cannot refund cashbacks.

Keep in mind what a cashback is. It basically pulls money out from your bank, and turns it into cash that you get as change from the register. It’s a courtesy, and does not lower your wealth at all. So the way that the guy would refuse to take it is ridiculous, because he could go deposit it into his bank, and he would be back into normalcy like he never did a cashback.

The guy would not take his money.

My manager tried to void the transaction, but found out that it wouldn’t refund the cashback. It would only refund what he paid for, which was the prints, and he STILL refused to take the cashback.

After causing a scene in front of a line of about 3 people, calling my manager and I liars a couple times, he eventually gave up and stormed out with his own money.

So, basically, the guy was refusing to take his own money. That’s literally the whole situation. It was a minor mistake that he overblew into making us look like we were refusing to help him. We literally couldn’t help him, cause a cashback is not made to be a refundable item. It’s a courtesy, through and through.

It was nice to get this off my chest, cause it made me so upset.

Wow! That’s so crazy! Just take the $20.

This person shares a fun fact about cash back.

That guy clearly didn’t understand that it was his own money that he was refusing to take. I wonder what the employees ended up doing with the money. Did they keep it as a tip? Did the cashier get to keep it? Would they set it aside for the next time the guy comes in to deduct the $20 from his order?

It would’ve been so much easier if the customer had just taken the $20. Maybe the cashier could’ve explained the situation in a clearer way, or maybe it was really impossible to get through to this guy.

This is the problem with letting customers pay by themselves. While I prefer not to hand my credit card to an employee, when you give a customer options on a screen and they choose the wrong ones, it makes the whole situation more stressful than it needs to be.

Imagine decorating for Christmas. When do you put your Christmas decorations up? I used to decorate the day after Thanksgiving, but when Covid happened, I decided I needed the festivities to start sooner, so I decorated the day after Halloween instead. My Christmas decorations now go up sometime in November, not always November first, but almost always well before Thanksgiving. I’d be really upset if someone told me I couldn’t decorate that early.

In this story, one homeowner was really upset when her HOA set a rule that you can only put up decorations 15 days before and after a holiday. That would mean you couldn’t decorate for Christmas until like a week or two after Thanksgiving! I’d be furious!

This neighbor was furious, not just about Christmas but also about Halloween since she likes to decorate for Halloween on October 1st.

Instead of just getting mad about it, she decided to get even and take advantage of the new rules. Let’s read all about it.

HOA passed a stupid decorating rule.

Our board was tired of seeing people leave decorations up too long after holidays ended so they passed a rule last July that we could only have decorations up 15 days prior and must be taken down 15 days after a holiday.

Some people might think that rule is ok. But I like to decorate for halloween on October 1st to have the decorations up all of October. I don’t think that is unreasonable.

And I liked having Christmas up (it was a tradition) on the weekend after Thanksgiving. Everyone is out for the holiday. We make a big deal of it.

And we’d take Halloween down the weekend after Halloween and Christmas came down the weekend after New Years. It isn’t up all year.

OP got mad and then got even.

When they passed this rule, I was livid.

I decided that they never mentioned which holidays we could decorate for so the first thing I did was go out and buy Red, White and Blue lights. I decorated for the 4th of July and you better believe I left those annoying lights up until July 19th.

Problem is there really aren’t major holidays from July on until October. BUT the HOA did not say it had to be a major holiday.

Time to celebrate some major and minor holidays.

After July 19th, I decorated for International Beer day which was on August 4th.

How do you decorate for that? Well it was the same Red, White and Blue lights up for the 4th of July but I removed the sign that said “Happy Independence Day” and replaced it with a sign I made myself that read “Happy International Beer Day”.

On August 19th I changed the sign to Happy National Aviation Day. I kept the same lights up though.

Next was Labor Day. Yep. Just changed the sign again.

The fun continued…

On September 19th I started celebrating Rosh Hashanah. Because again, they never indicated which holidays we could decorate for.

I removed the Happy Rosh Hashanah on October 1st and changed it to Happy Sukkot. But I went all out for that. I created a Booth out of my halloween casket decorations and put little figures (taken from my halloween decorations) into them.

I kept his up over the holidays where I started with Veterans day after halloween and then went to Thanksgiving and Hanukkah.

The board wants to change the rules again.

They board met March 8th, and they tried to pass a rule saying which holidays we could decorate for, BUT they couldn’t get the vote when they tried to just include, New Years, Valentines, 4th of July, Halloween and Christmas.

They didn’t include any Jewish Holidays and our Jewish neighbors didn’t like that.

They didn’t include any non-christian holidays like Ramadan and a lot of people voiced their displeasure with that.

So they are going to meet again on April 10th and I think they are just going to change the rule to make decorations come down for the holidays in a reasonable time and not put restrictions on when we can start.

I like OP’s style! Decorating all year long for every holiday you can imagine sounds like a good plan!

I don’t know the answer to this question. I wouldn’t want to live in an HOA.

Wow! A turquoise house!

If the HOA is going to make a ridiculously annoying rule, the best way to handle it is to follow the rule in the most annoying way possible like the homeowner in this story. I’d love it if some of the other neighbors joined in and started celebrating other minor holidays. I’m sure there’s some sort of holiday every day of the year, even if it’s just national whatever day.

I definitely think that the 4th of July is a legitimately reason to decorate. Why not put up red, white and blue lights? Sounds good to me! It doesn’t just have to be flags and fireworks.

I wonder how long it will take for the HOA to actually reach a decision about a modification to the rule. Hopefully they realize that it would be better not to have the rule at all.

Working in customer service isn’t for everyone. While you may have bright moments with sweet, wonderful and memorable customers, sometimes customers are memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Imagine working as a teller at a bank, and you’re busy helping customers both inside the bank and at the drive up. What would you do if an older woman at the drive up didn’t seem to understand what you were asking her and then seemed to think she knew more than you? Would you keep the customer service smile plastered to your face, or would you make sure she knew that she wasn’t smarter than you?

In this story, one teller was in this situation, and she did both. She kept her cool while also putting the customer in her place.

Let’s read all about it.

Making sure people aren’t having their money stolen makes me the worst human being ever.

I work as a teller at a rather well known branch in my state.

The day this happened, we were rather busy, as we only have three teller windows.

To add to this, we are also the drive-through tellers, and have to bounce between customers in the lobby and outside.

This Old Lady was in the drive-through. I have a quick glance in the tube before I greet the customers, so I can verify what we’re doing.

Here’s how the interaction started.

Me – Welcome, were we just cashing this today?

OL – blank stare

Me – seeing another piece of paper Oh, you’re depositing?

OL – blank stare

She finally found out what the customer needed.

Me – realising it was a post-it Oh, nevermind, I…

OL – I JUST WANT IT CASHED

So I go back to my computer, and see we have a cheque for $1,000. But her note is for 3 $100 bills and 2 $50 bills.

Me – Ma’am, since I’m not familiar with you, and you’re cashing for a large amount, would you send through your license for ID?

She had a followup question.

OL – blank stare followed by sigh

Me – Thank you so much. Also, I see you only specified for $400, did you not mind how you got the rest back?

OL – glaring WHAT?

Me – You only specified how you wanted $400 back, so…

The old lady didn’t understand.

OL – I WANT YOU TO GIVE ME A THOUSAND DOLLARS!

Me – fed up at this point I know that ma’am, how did you want to other $600 back, or do you not care?

She confirms she doesn’t care about the remainder, sends her license through, and I get her taken care of. At this point the line is growing, and I want her gone.

Me – Ok, that’s coming back out, have a great day.

The old lady had another question.

OL – How do I close my account?

Me – … You’ll need to come in and speak to someone about it.

OL – WHAT?!

Me – You would need to speak with a banker.

The old lady thought she was wiser.

OL – Well, what if I just wrote a cheque out for the full amount and deposited it at another bank? Hm? smug face

Me – You could do that, but there’s a difference between a closed account and an empty one. That’s just a good way to get hit with fees.

OL – starts sputtering and gearing up for a melt down

Me – Ok ma’am, have a great day and a fantastic weekend! mute

That does sound like a rather frustrating interaction.

If the old woman wanted to close her account, why didn’t she just say that to begin with? She could just park her car and come inside the bank and be done with it.

It definitely sounds stressful trying to deal with customers inside the bank and at the drive up window at the same time. That doesn’t seem very practical.

OP certainly seemed to handle the situation well, and her response to the old lady about what would happen if her account were empty instead of actually closed was the perfect comeback, and the truth.

Some customers can be pretty annoying.

Coming up with a gift for a friend can be hard, especially if you are on a budget. Sometimes, it is much better to pool your money with a larger friend group, so you can get one thing that is actually really good.

That was the situation that the group of friends in this story was in. So, one person offered to collect a small amount of money from each person and purchase a gift on behalf of them all.

Everyone agreed and pitched in, but when he bought a gift and a gift card with the money, a few of them got upset that he got the gift card rather than just returning the left over money to each person.

Personally, I don’t see that he did anything wrong. Read through the full story and see what you think.

AITA for spending all €210 on a gift?

I’m a senior in high school, and a friend of mine recently turned 20 and was throwing a party.

They are very organized.

For the first time, I created a social media group (WhatsApp) with all the guests, made up of her friends and us classmates, to discuss the gift.

First, I ran a survey to ask how many would participate, then I posted the proposed alternatives: earrings, a Tezenis gift card, and a Sephora gift card.

This sounds like a great idea.

Since both the gift card and the earrings were receiving good votes, even though the earrings were winning, I suggested that, depending on the price of the earrings, we could also offer a gift card to bundle.

Those who responded (since most of them viewed but didn’t respond) said it was fine. (It should be noted that people didn’t vote in the surveys, so I had to message some of them privately to see if they’d participate.)

In the end, I suggested we each contribute €10, and if there were any leftovers, we could give them a gift card or something else—if the others agreed, of course.

They started sending me money without responding but visually, so I figured they’d say so if they disagreed.

Everything seemed to be going to well.

After collecting all the money (€210), a titanic undertaking because I had to push some people who kept procrastinating, I gave the gifts and sent the receipts.

The first thing I got were the earrings, €120, the second the gift card, €90 (writing on the group if it was okay to use them only for the card, I waited a few minutes but I had already received some affirmative replies from the birthday girl’s friends and others who had viewed without responding, so I continued).

Why would he give the money back?

Once everything was finished, a classmate of mine wrote on the group saying in a rather patronizing tone that I could redistribute the remaining €90 instead of spending it.

I replied by forwarding the message from the night before in which I had said that I would use the €10 for the earrings and the card, he said in a joking tone, but not too much, he seemed more annoyed, that he wanted a bank transfer.

Well, nobody is strictly obligated to give exactly €10.

I didn’t reply. Incidentally, I would like to point out that in class two boys had sent me €9.67 instead of €10 because it was “fun”, saying that anyway they weren’t precise because I only had to buy the earrings.

I replied that in reality I had also written that I would keep it to €10 to also add something to the gift, but they had already started laughing among themselves, so they probably didn’t even listen to me.

No, of course not.

So, was I wrong not to insist and emphasize even more that I would use all the money?

AITA?

Some people just love to complain. If anything, those friends should be thankful that this person took on the task of organizing everything and actually making the purchase.

He communicated more than enough.

Let the birthday girl know that some of her friends are cheap.

People make it so hard to help.

It is people like this that make it difficult to organize gift giving. They agreed to (or ignored) what he suggested, therefore they were in on it. He has no obligation to double check every little detail.

I would ignore any further complaints that they make, and I would certainly not be the one who organizes things for this group in the future.

When you’ve dealt with theft before, it’s hard not to see potential risks everywhere.

This photographer found himself questioning his own judgment after buying an expensive camera lens and carrying it through the city in a bag that practically advertised what was inside.

As he returned to his car, a stranger approached and asked for spare change.

And though the interaction seemed harmless at first, the man watched him put the bag in his vehicle. That made the photographer uneasy, so he decided to move his car before heading to dinner.

Later that evening, he ran into the same man again. And that’s when everything went downhill.

Keep reading to learn what happened next.

AITA for pre-emptively moving my car because an unhoused guy asked me for change?

I am a professional photographer, and I bought a new camera lens at a store in the city centre because it was on sale.

This lens still costs almost $2,000 so it’s quite a valuable item. When I picked up the lens, I didn’t have a bag so the store unfortunately gave me one with “SONY” very visibly printed on the side so it is obvious something valuable is inside it.

I planned to also get dinner in the city centre but as it was getting dark I didn’t want to be walking around at night by myself with a big “SONY” bag, so I decided to walk back to the car park and put it in the boot of my car and go eat.

The man needed spare change.

As I was walking back to the car park, a man enters at the same time as me but slightly behind me. He looks a little disheveled but I think nothing of it and don’t assume he’s unhoused.

He follows behind me all the way to my car and right as I open the boot on my car to put the bag inside, he stops to asks me if I have any spare change. I genuinely don’t carry cash on me these days, so I tell him, “Sorry, no.” and he walks away and quickly disappears around a corner.

It immediately occurs to me that this guy saw me put that bag in my car and if I walk away and lock my car he could in-theory come back, see that I’m gone and break into my car to steal my new camera lens.

In his mind, it’s happened once and can happen again.

I feel bad for assuming this about him, but last year, I had my car get broken into so that thought is ever-present whenever I park my car.

Chances are that nothing will happen but out of an abundance of caution, I decided to just pay for my parking and leave this particular car park and go down the street to park in a different one and go get dinner.

After dinner, as I’m returning to the new car park I coincidentally see the same guy standing right outside the entrance to the car park. I am wearing a distinctive blue jacket so he immediately recognizes me and starts to talk to me which quickly turns into him confronting me.

At this point, he didn’t even know what to say.

“Thought I was going to break into your car, did you bro?”

I’m at a loss for words and when I don’t say anything and try to walk away, he starts to get really angry and starts accusing me of racism and saying that me (I’m Asian) and white people are always racially stereotyping him and he’s sick of it.

He hurls more abuse at me, ironically some of it racial, and pulls out his phone to record me as I try to use the terminal to pay for my parking.

Thankfully, a security guard helped.

I try to tune him out, but other people are starting to notice and poke their heads around the corner to see what the commotion is and I’m getting more and more stressed. The terminal finally lets me pay with my card and I rush back to my car.

I get in and lock the doors, but he is standing directly behind my car, so I can’t back out and leave. His yelling goes on for another 2 minutes and I contemplate calling the police but I worry that will just make the situation worse.

Mercifully, a security officer who had heard the commotion showed up and rousted the angry man and I could finally leave.

AITA?

Yikes! That definitely sounds like a form of harassment.

This person would’ve moved their car too.

Here’s someone who would’ve done the same.

He sure did.

This photographer made the right call.

Nobody knows what the man’s intentions were, but protecting a two-thousand-dollar piece of equipment after a previous break-in seems like common sense.

But the strange part is how personally the man took a decision that didn’t affect him at all.

If anything, those actions probably validated the photographer’s concerns more than anything else.

Sometimes the smallest interactions can leave the biggest impression.

In this story, a woman was shopping in a store when a child caught her attention.

The young girl called her and asked for a sticker, thinking she worked at Target.

She thought it was a cute gesture, so she assured the mom that it was all fine.

Read the full story below. It’s an interesting narrative where a simple moment in a store turned into a recurring bond between a stranger and a child.

Cute I don’t work here experience

A few years ago, I was shopping at a store that I did not work at.

I hear a small child yelling, “Hi, Target Lady! Can I have a sticker?”

It was my favorite tiny customer.

She had to convince her mom that I was the woman from Target.

This woman decided to carry stickers for little kids like her.

Then, I had to convince the mom that I was okay with her daughter saying hi to me when we see each other in public.

I didn’t have any stickers, but mom allowed me to give the little girl some candy.

I always made sure to hide some stickers, so that this sweet girl would always get one.

Aww… that was really cute indeed. I wouldn’t mind being mistaken for an employee either if it came from innocent kids like this one.

And OP’s decision to carry and hide stickers in case she meets young children again was just genius!

Let’s face it, there’s no such thing as “comfortable” in economy on a long-haul flight.

This traveler learned that firsthand when he finally decided to recline his seat and get some rest. Most passengers try to make the best of the limited space, especially once meal service ends and the cabin settles down for the night.

But when he leaned his seat back, a father sitting behind him accused him of almost hitting his young daughter and insisted that he announce every future recline in advance.

So, rather than getting some sleep, he spent the rest of the flight wondering why a routine seat adjustment had turned into such a big issue.

His partner and mother-in-law both felt the father had overreacted, but the confrontation still left him questioning whether he had done something wrong.

Read on to see what you think.

AITA for not checking in before reclining seat

Yesterday, I was on a long-haul flight in economy for about 9 hours. It was on a B747-400, and those things are really cramped in standard economy.

Meal service had finished, and I wanted to wind down to nap just before lights went out, so I reclined my seat. I don’t think super fast, but on the outbound flight my seat was broken and I had to use some force and help from my seatmate to get it to move at all, so I don’t think I reclined super slowly either.

It was reclining for a long enough duration to hear a, “WHOA WHOA WHOA!!!” from behind while I moved.

At first, he didn’t realize what was happening.

I didn’t quite understand what I was hearing and thought it must be from the series I was watching on the tablet, so I just carried on as normal. There was a bit of a, “This can’t be happening,” feeling because I’ve been on another flight recently where a loud fight started over someone reclining.

Then a man behind me tapped my seat and told me (not shouting, but quite sternly) I had almost struck his young child in the head, and I must tell him every time I want to put my seat back to make sure she is safe.

I am still absolutely baffled by this. I didn’t realize until then a child was sat behind me, but when I looked later and heard her talking, the child was at most 5, possibly as young as 3. What was a child that small doing that her head was in the way of my seat moving back?

From that point on, he kept his seat up.

I just said OK out of shock, put my seat up, and to avoid a mid-air fight (but also avoid having to interact with this guy again) didn’t recline for the rest of my journey. I noted later when I went to the bathroom that all of them were asleep with their seats reclined…

My partner, who was next to me, thinks the parents should have treated it as an accident and got their daughter to sit in her seat properly, and the dad was rude for telling me what to do.

My MIL was next to me and says that if they wanted the space for the child to be moving around in the seat like that, they should have upgraded to Premium Economy. But obviously having someone tell you off in a public place for almost hitting their child in the head makes you feel quite guilty.

AITA?

Geez! That was a pretty strong reaction.

Let’s check out what the people over at Reddit think.

Maybe he took the tone wrong.

It did seem like misplaced concern.

It’s easy for this reader to see both sides.

That’s definitely a no for everyone.

This whole situation sounds like a misunderstanding that the father blew way out of proportion.

Nobody wants to see a child get hurt. So, it’s easy to understand why he reacted the way he did at first.

At the same time, the traveler had every right to use the recline feature, though it never hurts to stay aware of the people around you when moving your seat.

In the end, neither side handled the situation perfectly, but turning a simple accident into a confrontation didn’t help anyone.

When a roommate secures a great job, you should be happy for them, but that is not always the case.

What if ever since your roommate got a great new job, they have been too busy to handle things like doing dishes and taking out the trash?

That is what the guy in this story noticed about his roommate, so one day he got sick of it and accused the guy of thinking he is too good to take out the trash. His roommate was really hurt by the accusation, and now this guy feels bad for what he said.

Personally, I think that while the guy should clean up after himself, there was no need to bring his job into it. I think this guy is just jealous. Read through the story and see what you think.

AITA for accusing my roommate of acting “above all this” after he got a job at Stripe?

I (22M) already feel stupid typing this because if I read this from someone else I’d probably think “yeah dude, you’re just jealous.” Maybe I am. That’s kind of the problem.

Trying to find a good internship is difficult.

Me and my roommate (22M) have lived together since sophomore year. Same major, same internship grind, same late night “we’re gonna make it eventually” talks. He’s one of my closest friends.

This placement season was bad for me. Like genuinely rough. I kept getting to final rounds and then rejected. One company made me do 5 interviews and then told me there were no openings. After a while it really got in my head.

That is a great role.

Meanwhile he lands an SDE role at Stripe. And before people jump on me, yes, I know that’s huge. I was really happy for him. I still am, I think. He worked hard and he’s smart.

But after that, I started feeling weird about stuff in a way I don’t feel good admitting. People treated him differently almost immediately. Friends asking for referrals, professors replying faster, random people suddenly caring more about what he said.

It is totally understandable that he is busy with his new job.

It was weird to watch. He changed a little too, but not in some ego way. Just busier maybe? More distracted. He’d leave dishes in the sink, forget trash day, eat my stuff and say “my bad, I’ll get you back.” Small roommate things, but it started piling up.

At the same time he was genuinely trying to help me with recruiting. Mock interviews, job postings, resume stuff. And this is where I sound like a jerk because instead of appreciating it, I’d leave those conversations feeling worse.

I think this guy is just jealous.

I started wondering if he actually wanted to help or if he just felt bad for me. Like pity-help. Which feels shitty to even type because if anything he was probably being nicer.

A few nights ago we got into a fight over garbage. Literally garbage. He forgot to take it out again, there were food containers sitting there for 2 days, and I just snapped.

Things have been building up for a while it seems. But he is acting terribly.

Started bringing up dishes, him eating my food, all of it. Then I said something like, “Ever since Stripe you’ve been acting like you’re above all this.”

He got really quiet and just said, “Dude, what the heck are you talking about? I’ve been trying really hard to be there for you.”

It is hitting him hard because he is exactly right.

Then he said, “I feel like no matter what I do right now, you’re gonna hate me for winning.”

That made me spiral really hard. It has been stuck in my head because I don’t think I hate him. But I also don’t know if he’s completely wrong.

He wasn’t wrong for bringing up the roommate stuff.

We’ve mostly just been doing awkward roommate logistics since then. I apologized for yelling, but not really for the bigger accusation.

Part of me feels like the roommate stuff would’ve annoyed anyone eventually. Another part of me feels like I took months of feeling embarrassed and dumped it on the person standing closest to me.

AITA?

Honestly, I think both of the things he is saying are true. His roommate not cleaning up messes is out of line, but he shouldn’t have said anything about his job.

It really seems like he is a bit insecure.

He is right to be upset about the trash.

Thankfully, he seems self-aware.

He knows he was in the wrong.

He is jealous and it is making him see everything about his roommate in a negative light. While it is completely fair to confront him about not picking up after himself, he was way out of line for blaming it on the job.

He owes his roommate an apology and hopefully they can move past this difficult situation. The good news is that it does seem that he recognizes that he was in the wrong, which is often half the battle.

Whether you are short on cash or you are just trying to spend your collection of coins, counting out exact change can sometimes take some time.

What would you do if you were working at a retail store, and an elderly gentlemen was taking a very long time counting out his change even though there was a long line forming behind him.

That is what was happening to the retail worker in this story, so rather than getting upset, he excitedly watched the customer to see if he would have enough change to pay for his items. Unfortunately, after several minutes of counting, he realized he didn’t have quite enough, so he took out a $20 and paid that way.

While anticlimactic, the worker did the right thing by letting the customer pay the way he wanted. Hopefully nobody behind him was in too much of a hurry.

A customer spent seven minutes counting exact change and then paid with a bill anyway

This happened on a weekday afternoon, pretty quiet shift, maybe four people in line behind this guy.

Sometimes you have to pay in coins just to get rid of them.

I want to be clear that I have nothing against people paying with coins. Coins are legal currency. I respect the hustle.

This man, maybe mid sixties, puts his items on the belt very deliberately. One jar of something, a small bag of nuts, I think some tea.

He is ready to pay.

Maybe twelve dollars total. He gets his total, nods like he was expecting it, and then reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out a change purse.

Not a wallet. A change purse. The kind with the little metal clasp at the top that clicks open.

If you pay regularly in cash, you get a lot of coins over time.

He opens it and I can see it is absolutely full of coins. Like this man has been collecting coins since before I was born and they have all been waiting for this moment.

He starts counting. Very carefully, very methodically, moving each coin from one side of his palm to the other. Quarters first, then dimes. He is focused. He is committed.

Is he going to make it?

The line behind him is getting a little restless but he doesn’t notice or doesn’t mind and honestly at this point neither do I because I am genuinely invested in whether he’s going to make it.

Four minutes in he has like eleven dollars and change. He needs maybe forty more cents. He counts what’s left. He counts it again.

Oh man, howe frustrating.

He looks up at me with an expression I can only describe as the quiet acceptance of a man who has done the math and knows the answer.

He puts the change purse back in his pocket. Takes out his wallet. Hands me a twenty.

He is going to do the exact same thing next time, but then he will have enough.

I gave him back a bunch of coins in change. He opened the change purse and put them in. Clicked it shut. Said thank you. Left.

The whole transaction was nine minutes. He seemed completely at peace with all of it. I think about him sometimes.

While I’m sure this was annoying to the customers behind him, sometimes you need to take your time and count out the change. It can take a while.

If you enjoyed this post, check out this story about a hardware store employee who lost his cool with customers wandering around after closing time.

I think everyone has had one of these change purses at some point in their life.

Being patient with people, especially the elderly, is always good.

This type of thing happens all the time.

Why would someone do this? The story seemed pretty normal to me.

He was very kind to be patient with a customer like this. You never know what someone else is going through.

That being said, maybe he could have helped another customer while this guy was counting, just to speed things along. At the end of the day, however, a couple minute delay isn’t a big deal.

When you work at a hotel front desk, you have to interact with all sorts of people, and some of them really aren’t that nice.

What would you do if you had guests who demanded you kiss them and others who made vague threats on the employees, but the manager didn’t really do anything about it?

That is what the woman in this story experienced, so she ended up finding another job where she would feel safer.

Manson-esque Dude Threatens Manager, Another Tells Me To Kiss Him

I wish I could say that like good ol’ Geralt from the Witcher, I’ve been battling the weird beasties we folks deal with, and that I’ve emerged tougher and triumphant- (Well, I feel I have gotten a little tougher, a little better about speaking up and being firm with boundaries).

Some jobs just eat away at you.

But man. The pep in my step is starting’ to turn into a limp and- like a half-deflated balloon- I’ve started to be a little bummed about my night audit adventures.

The turning point happened recently, when a particular man was staying with us.

What is he up to?

He seemed like a perfectly nice fella, though his wife began to frequently call and when I’d transfer her call to his room…. he wouldn’t answer.

This happened several times. As in, I would say a silent mantra of hope every time I’d transfer her-

“Oh Lawdy please let this dude answer. Please, please, please.”

I’m sure she thinks her husband is up to no good.

No luck, and every time I spoke to her she became more and more irate, as though I was purposely keeping him from being on the phone- “What is going on?!”- and, when I offered the excuse that we were having phone issues or that maybe he wasn’t in the room-

“He should be. That makes NO sense whatsoever. This is ridiculous.”

Yeah, but this isn’t the hotel manager’s problem.

I’m 99% sure he was avoiding her calls.

He started to come down and talk with me, at the desk, seeming nothing more than what I thought was fatherly and kind- he did mention at one point that he was dealing with a difficult divorce, and then said,

“It’s nice to talk with someone with a little light in their heart-“Which, at the time, I just read as a very nice, appreciative compliment.

What’s happening now?

Well, as my grandpa would say, “Hell’s bells and shotgun shells.”

Things quickly changed, after that.

He is going through a rough patch.

I have a coworker who told me she’d seen him with alcohol, and that she would hear him yelling in his room, either at someone or just to himself.

My first thought was, “Um…and nobody is concerned about this…?”

I would be worried.

Then, one night he was walking through the lobby, face flushed and beer in hand; I had the idea that maybe he’d been drinking for a while, that evening.

He seemed to want to say something to me, but I had to help several other guests. He sat on the lobby couch. At this point, I started to feel a little nervous.

Ahh, so he is flirting with her.

After the other guests head to their respective rooms, he gets up and says, “You know what-” And writes something down on a piece of paper before sliding it across the desk: His number.

I tried to be nice (Which I realize is my bad habit. I’ve learned that I have to be direct and firm in these instances; no way around it) and said, “Oh, thank you- that’s very sweet- but there’s a rule against fraternization.” -Time to make something up, I decided- “-And I have a very sweet boyfriend I just started dating-“

He shot his shot.

“You’re just saying that,” He says, as though reading my mind, “Come on. Well, if you change your mind…” -And with that he heads up to his room.

-But not for long. NEXT, he calls the front desk.

“Tabs, I’m serious. Give me a call. I like you. I like your energy.”

She shouldn’t have to make up excuses. This guy should accept her answer.

I tell him that’s very kind of him but that it would break (My completely made up) boyfriend’s heart.

Even worse? After I get off the phone with this man, guess what? HE COMES DOWN TO THE LOBBY AGAIN.

Maybe she should call the police.

I happened to be on the phone with another hotel at that moment, and when I got off the phone he says, “You getting me in trouble?” (His first thought was that I’d called the police)

“N-no.” I start to get VERY nervous at this point, and I realized something even more concerning. He was standing there looking up and around. Looking for the cameras.

Ok, he is crossing all sorts of lines here.

“We gonna do this here or step outside?”

“I’m sorry?”

“You gotta kiss me, otherwise how will you know we’re not compatible?”

What an absolute creep.

I’m sure my fear started to show on my face because THEN he has the audacity to say,

“Oh don’t look at me like that…c’mon…”

Good, she is being direct with him.

I get brutally honest with the man (But kept my voice gentle) and said, “I think you are going through a very hard time right now, and you’re latching on to someone who is being kind to you because of that.

You’ve had a lot more life experience than me- believe me- and it would be inappropriate in more ways than one. I don’t want to kiss you. I don’t want to, and you’re scaring me a little.”

Well, he should be ashamed.

I watched his face and he wouldn’t look at me for several moments as though ashamed,

Then this dude goes, “Sorry, I’m sorry.” And hurries to his room. It was incredibly awkward but in the moment I was glad he at least apologized.

That’s nice that the manager has her safety in mind.

When I told my manager all of this the next day and her response was just, “I’m sorry that happened. Don’t worry about taking the trash out to the dumpster when it’s still dark. Just try to avoid him.”

I was like: That’s it??? What in the flying frag grenade?

Maybe this job isn’t right for her.

I realized then that I wanted to find something different, job-wise.

Then came another incident, in which a man who wasn’t a guest kept coming in. When my manager confronted him, he said,

Is that a threat?

“I’d hate to see what’s happening on the news to happen here, too.”-And when she looked at the television, the report being covered was that of a murder.

No police were called. But she told us to be aware that the man wasn’t allowed walking around the lobby as he had been, and told us to inform him that he needed to leave, if we saw him.

What is wrong with some people?

I did have to tell him to leave, at one point. He’d been sitting in the dark. Just sitting. I was alarmed as all get out and my heart has never reacted with such automatic fear to someone, before.

Dude looked honestly a bit like Charles Manson.

Well, at least he left without any trouble.

“I understand, dear.” Was all he said to me. At least he didn’t yell, but it was almost more eerie that he was so calm and polite, especially knowing what he’d said to my manager.

A few days later, the police did have to be called with this individual. He came in asking to use the phone and when told to leave, threatened the manager on duty again.

I hope she got out of there soon.

Basically, it’s been long journey. I definitely don’t regret my time there, though, and there’ve been way more good moments than bad. If I hadn’t gotten another job offer somewhere else with more pay, I’d probably still consider staying!

Then again, the way that management handled the situations above makes me question if it’s really the best workplace, anyhow.

This sounds like a terrifying job to me. I wouldn’t want to have to deal with people like that on a regular basis.

Imagine agreeing to drive your brother in exchange for gas money. What would you do if your brother agreed to pay you, but your mother thought you shouldn’t take his money?

In this story, one young woman is in that exact situation, and she’s pretty frustrated by it. Her brother seemed okay with paying her. She actually would’ve been willing to drive him for free but also thinks it’s reasonable to be paid for her time and gas. Their mother sees it completely differently.

Now, she’s not sure if she messed up, did the right thing or is really overreacting about the whole situation.

Keep reading for all the details.

AIO to be so annoyed for being scolded by my mom for accepting gas money from my brother?

My (F22) eldest brother (M30) from Mexico was visiting us for the holidays, and was invited by a friend to go to a party 2 cities over. This was about a 30 minute drive at like 7pm.

He asked me if I thought our mom would be cool with being driven to the party, or if they’d at least have me drive him, and pretty jokingly I said I’d do it just fine so long as I get some gas money.

He asked our mom, she asked me if I was fine with driving him, I just smiled again and said “yeah haha as long as yall give me gas money!” lightheartedly and started getting my things to drive him regardless.

I didn’t hang around to actually charge anyone before taking him.

She wasn’t expecting him to actually pay her.

Fast forward and I do in fact end up driving him to the party, and once there he asked me how much I needed for gas, which I wasn’t prepared for cause I didn’t intend to actually charge him super seriously. It’s nice to be paid for my gas but I’d honestly just for the most part been joking.

Either way I kinda just didn’t know how much to tell him, let telling him I wasn’t sure how much, and when he offered me $20 I accepted them happily and said that was okay, since it seemed okay with him.

We just had some conversation about our family before his friend picked him up and I drove 30 minutes back home.

Her mom thinks she messed up.

Well fast forward it’s been about 2-3 weeks since that, and yesterday I got a scolding from my mom because I “charged my brother for gas” at all.

I explained it was said lightheartedly and jokingly, and that it’s not like I sat there demanding money.

But she said that clearly my brother didn’t take it as a joke if he offered me money, and that what I should’ve done was refuse his money and go to her to ask that she pays me back instead for the gas, and that me saying what I said, as well as taking his money was not a good look at all.

She’d told me my brother asked her if she thought $20 was good for gas since that’s what she gave me and she was shocked he’d given me money.

She’s really annoyed about the situation.

Honestly I’m super freaking annoyed by this because how in the world would I have known that me accepting his money was wrong???

We’re both grown adults and I was paid for my time and gas, I don’t see the issue at all so it’s had me kinda mad that it’s always something.

Seeing this as a “bad look” just seems so objective because even if the roles were reversed and he was the one taking me somewhere and needed the gas money, I’d pay him just fine, and yet when this was brought up as a rebuttal I was told it still isn’t a good look.

We’re grown freaking adults, I don’t understand having to go to mommy about getting paid on behalf of my grown brother. Am I the one who’s over reacting and just not seeing I’m in the wrong?

She could’ve refused the money since she didn’t actually expect it, but if her brother offered her the money, why not take it?

Another person thinks her brother was considerate.

This situation isn’t even any of her mom’s business. It’s between her and her brother, and her brother didn’t seem to have any problem paying her. She did sacrifice an hour of her time plus gas for him. It was nice of him to pay her.

Her mom needs to stop creating problems where problems don’t even exist. Clearly they are two adults now handling their lives responsibly and without any drama. Their mom is the one creating drama.

I’ve read a lot of stories about horrible landlords, but this story is different. It’s a nightmare story about a tenant who refuses to pay her rent and also refuses to move out. They have to go to court not one but two times, and the tenant even hires a lawyer even though she can’t seem to afford to pay her rent.

I would feel bad for the landlord in this story, but she actually does a great job stating her case to the judge and even leaves the tenant and her lawyer speechless. It’s pretty incredible.

The tenant really messed up and is not going to win this case, but it’s pretty impressive what she does to delay getting evicted. And it’s even more impressive when they go back to court and the landlord states her case to the judge.

Let’s read the whole story.

Your lease is still valid? Even though you were evicted? Ok.

I am the landlord of some apartments in the city. I sign the lease agreements, and go over the basics with tenants, although they don’t usually want me to spend hours delving into the fine print.

99% of the time, it’s a breeze, and everything is fine.

One lady, let’s call her Karen, had been paying her rent via a new bank account and new checks for the last several months. All of the sudden, we got several chargeback fees on our account- she had put a stop payment on the checks, and closed the account.

I immediately called her.

Let’s see how the phone call went.

Me: Hey, Karen, it looks like your checks bounced for the last few months. I just wanted to make sure everything is ok.

Karen: Oh no! I promise I’ll get this fixed.

Me: Ok. You’ve been a good tenant in the past, so I’ll give you a month.

Needless to say, a month passed, and she didn’t pay. So I called her again.

Let’s see how this conversation went.

Me: Hey, Karen, we still haven’t received payment, so I’m afraid we’ll have to file for eviction.

Karen: Oh god no, I’m an old woman, I can’t afford to be evicted- I’m trying so hard to pay! Can you give me another shot?

Me: As long as you pay before the court date, the eviction doesn’t have to go through.

The court date arrives, and guess who hasn’t paid yet.

Let’s see how court went.

At court, the judge rules for a 24 hour notice to vacate. Karen, in tears, comes up to me afterwards.

Karen: Can you please give me another chance? I can’t afford to go anywhere else.

Me: I’m sorry, Karen, but the only way I could do that is if you paid off the debt, signed a new lease agreement, plus a first month’s rent, plus a new security deposit. And I don’t think that’s going to happen. Goodbye.

So I left, and I thought that was that. My maintenance guy would come in in a few days to do the inspection and clean up, and then we’d put it on the market.

That’s not what happened.

He shows up a few days later, and there’s a problem… they’re still there.

So I call the sheriff, to schedule a set-out. A problem, though.

According to the sheriff, the 24 hour notice was no longer valid, as we had struck up a deal afterwards, so the court had reversed the eviction decision.

I had no recollection of having decided that this would happen. I called the court, and they informed me that the eviction was no longer valid, as apparently, I told the sheriff that I was giving her more time, invalidating the decision, etc.

Karen lied her little heart out.

What happened was that Karen had called the sheriff, and told him that the court had reversed the decision, because of a non-existent deal. She had then called the court, and told them that the sheriff could not evict her, as I had waived the notice. And she had used my words- twisting my denial of an extension into a deal.

I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt.

I sent Karen a copy of a new lease agreement, asking for the debts, in addition to rent for a first month, and a new security deposit.

Her lawyer then contacted me- yes, she had the money to hire a lawyer, somehow- informing me that, in fact, her old lease agreement was still valid, as my “deal” (you know, the one that would require a NEW lease agreement) invalidated the eviction decision.

They had to go back to court.

So I filed for eviction, on the grounds that she had not paid for several months now, 5 to be exact, and therefore had invalidated her old lease agreement. And then, I read her old lease agreement. I already know these contracts pretty well, but like I said, I don’t usually delve into the minutiae. This time, I did.

We show up at court. Karen has her lawyer. Karen is bursting, grinning like a fool, like she’s won the lottery. Her lawyer looks fairly happy as well.

The judge asks me to speak.

Me: I would like Karen to leave the apartments, but she is refusing, despite the fact that according to the court’s last decision, she should have left over a month ago now.

Let’s see what Karen’s excuse was.

Judge: And, Miss Karen?

Lawyer: Miss Karen cannot be ejected from her home without a new notice. Yes, she has not yet paid past due rent, however, she and the Landlord struck up a deal, giving her the time she needed to pay via verbal agreement. This deal, made directly after the last court date, invalidated the last decision, so Miss Karen will require a new decision, and therefore, a new notice, before she can rightfully be evicted from her home. Until then, her lease agreement is still valid. (insert legal crap)

Judge: And Landlord? What do you have to say?

Me: Well, your honor, I have to agree. They have made a very, very compelling argument. Karen and I did indeed make a deal, giving her the time she needed to pay. And yes, her old lease agreement is still valid, I guess. Well, according to the terms of the still valid lease, there are some additional things that the court needs to be aware of, that I’d like to go over for clarification. I’m sure you have a copy, your honor?

Let’s see what the lease stated.

Judge: Yes, I do.

Me: And you have a copy, Lawyer?

Lawyer: Yes, I do.

Me: Excellent. Well, your honor, if you look at section 4, subsection A, on page 2, you will see that after 10 days of nonpayment, a late fee of $100 is applied. If you continue reading to subsection B, you will see that after 15 days of nonpayment, additional late fees of $10 per day are applied, until full payment is rendered. If you continue to subsection C, you will see that failed payments necessitate a chargeback fee of $50 per failed payment. If you will continue, your honor, to page 4, section 7, subsection F, you’ll see that if a tenant is in any way responsible for a loss of rent, including: leaving an apartment in less than move-in ready condition, failed payments, or, lastly, refusal to vacate in the case of an eviction, the tenant is responsible for payment of said loss of rent, in addition to any other debts owed. In addition, on page 8, section 14, subsection A, you’ll note that the tenant is responsible for any and all legal fees resultant from the eviction process, including attorney’s fees, such as for the attorney I hired to help me review this lease agreement. Finally, on page 10, the last page, section 17, subsection B, you will see that the tenant is responsible for all HVAC services rendered on their unit. As we sent in a company to fix the unit in Karen’s apartment at her request, we have the invoice here for the replacement unit- in addition to the totals for all of the fees listed.

Let’s see how everyone reacted.

At this point, the lawyer has gone completely pale- it’s clear that he was more concerned that I would fight the whole “deal” thing, than the terms of the lease he thought he’d have to fight to keep valid.

Karen looks utterly shell-shocked, her mouth slightly agape, like a child confused by a game of peek-a-boo.

The judge, meanwhile, is completely unfazed, until I hand her the invoice, alongside my maths, a spreadsheet, and a piece of paper with the total debt owed circled and highlighted at the bottom of the page.

Her eyes widen to the size of her mouth, as her jaw dropped with an audible gasp.

Karen was speechless.

Me: As you can see, your honor, the total owed is in excess of $16,000. I will happily accept the payment in the form of a cashier’s check. I’d hate to have to charge yet another $50 fee for failed payment, should another personal check bounce.

Judge: Lawyer, do you have anything to say?

At this point, the lawyer looks like he’s about to pass out. Karen seems to have stopped breathing. The judge remains silent for a moment, and then collects herself.

Judge: I’m afraid you’ll have to address that matter of debt in a different court than this one, Landlord. We are here only to judge whether Miss Karen is to be evicted from her home today.

The judge reached a decision.

Me: Oh, if she wants to stay, I’d be happy to let her. As long as she agrees to continue to abide by the terms of the lease agreement, specifically those clauses outlined above. And pays the debt owed today.

Judge: I’m going to rule for a 24 hour notice to vacate, unless Miss Karen can produce payment at this moment.

Karen sits, still, quiet, speechless even. Her lawyer is eyeing the window, I like to think contemplating his decisions in life that led him to this point. Maybe thinking about jumping, I don’t know.

Judge: Right, a 24 hour notice to vacate. And, Landlord?

The judge had one last piece of advice.

Me: Yes?

Judge: You’ll want to file those charges in small claims court… or a higher court, if it exceeds the amount that you can legally pursue in small claims.

Me: Already filed, your honor.

The case has now been resolved… and needless to say, I got a fairly significant bonus, in addition to a slight raise.

Wow! Karen really should’ve moved out. I’m not sure how she’s going to pay that bill.

This is a good point.

Another person has questions.

This person thinks Karen deserves to be homeless.

I’m surprised the landlord would go along with the Judge’s statement that she agreed to a deal with the tenant. She didn’t agree to a deal. The tenant twisted her words in order to get an extension. The tenant should be called out on that. But I guess showing the Judge, Lawyer, and Tenant that the tenant owed $16,000 was satisfying enough.

I hope the tenant eventually did move out. She had some nerve to refuse to move out the first time.

It’s stories like these that would make me never want to be a landlord. While there are certainly some awful landlords out there, some landlords have to deal with truly awful tenants.
