JEAHIL editorial board asked for Web2.0 tools

The editorial board of the Journal of the EAHIL asked for Web2.0 tools:

Tools for JEAHIL could include e.g. RSS feeds, linkable contents page, active links in regular columns etc. As two members of the editorial board, Oliver Obst and Benoit Thirion, are also members of the Task Force, we were sure that the web 2.0 tools for JEAHIL will not be forgotten.

My quick&dirty answer was:

A Blog/RSS feed to promote articles is set up quickly. You only need to cut the Journals' PDF into (articles) pieces. More sophisticated are linkable contents pages and active links in regular columns. For fully integration I think we need html versions of the articles, which then could be posted on a blog. But I know that's additional workload (in addition to managing the blog).

Presentation for EAHIL Council in Dublin (EAHIL2009)

The Taskforce had been very active during the EAHIL2009 Workshop in Dublin (June 3-5 2009)
In total we had 4 meetings, including the presentation of our plans and ideas during the Council Meeting. Below you can see what was presented by me. What followed was an active discussion in three groups focussed on the three major sectors of interest.

Over 100 responses; Switch to full account

Today we reached 100 responses to the first short survey of the Taskforce. The free account of SurveyMonkey has -among other things- a limit of 100. Free web-based tools can have its use for many people and groups. However it is good to expore the offered functionality and services of the free account.
For larger groups and organizations it is often wise to use a full account, because this opens up more detailed options and features. Thanks to Ioana Robu I got access to a paid account for EAHIL for SurveryMonkey just on time!
It was very simpel to tranfer the complete survey and all responses to this account.
The Survey is up again and ready to take an unlimited number of responses.
Be sure to add your comments and other remarks in the "Other"" box.

Short survey too short?

The just launched short survey "Tell us about the Web 2.0 Tools you are using" has been filled in already about 50 times and counting! (94 on May 29th)
It is supposed to give the Taskforce some general idea, a first impression on the use.
However, some reactions have reached me by email that it is not perfect. And i agree.
More options should be offered, like an option "I am not interested" or "did use it, but stopped", a more clearly put definition of things, more space to add comments etc.
Please add all additional comments to the survey in the space "Other", or comment to this post, or just keep emailing us.
More detailed and extensive polls on specific tools are planned, and with your input we can keep improving them.

Introduction of a Taskforce member

Dear EAHIL Colleagues,

As a new Taskforce Web 2.0 member I would like to introduce myself and tell about my points of view to web 2.0 issues.

I work as an information specialist at the National Library of Health Sciences Terkko. My main duties are helping customers with their information searches, giving user education and working with the Finnish medical and health sciences database Medic.

My acquaintance with web 2.0 tools began while I was working in the marketing team of EAHIL 2008 Helsinki Conference. Our team noticed that we needed some low threshold tools in order to be able to communicate and work with each other more often, than just in local organizing committee meetings. I did not have that much experience with e.g. wikis, blogs or web based videoconferencing tools. Starting to use these tools proofed to be surprisingly easy, uncomplicated and fun, and most of all these tools proofed to be extremely useful. I cannot imagine how we could have organized everything without them. I also had the good luck to have many web 2.0 knowledgeable colleagues near me, to help me with the basics, such as “How do I establish a web based videoconferencing session?” (Our team has a poster about all of this in EAHIL 2009 Dublin Workshop "Online collaboration tools enabling efficient conference marketing and smooth teamworking", so if you find this interesting, please come and see the poster.)

So my standpoint to web 2.0 tools is that of an enthusiastic grassroot level user, who has noticed that you don’t have to be an it-expert to utilize these tools – and that these tools really are useful and also a fun way to work and communicate interactively. I hope that together we can find within EAHIL nice ways to make good use of web 2.0 tools.

TaskForce Startup!

The latest issue of the Journal of Eahil contains an article called

Working, Sharing, Communicating, Learning and Teaching with others : the use of Web 2.0 tools for EAHIL Council, Board and Members.
The original proposal was written in Januari 2009 by Guus van den Brekel, Ronald van Dieën, Oliver Obst and put to the EAHIL Board in Februari. You can read the edited version for the JEAHIL just below in the first post of this blog. (It is showing a pdf version in a "social publishing tool" called Scribd)

This is what we finally are trying to achieve:
"The proposal envisioned the following environment where

appropriate social networking tools for EAHIL members and member organisations are introduced, explained and discussed to understand how useful some of these technologies can be in libraries.
experiences and reviews of different tools are gathered and published.
Aspects to enclose are local differences and trends between EAHIL countries, to learn what the applied use and benefits could be for any medical library, it's staff and its customers/patrons. (Comparable to Library Success Wiki)
EAHIL members are offered the possibility to explore and play with new technologies, as this is the best way to embrase and actually engage.
Working, Sharing, Communicating, Learning and Teaching from and with eachother, can be supported."

The Taskforce Blog will be a central point where new developments will be discussed and published. A place to get into contact with the Taskforce members and others.
Like a regular web 2.0 tool, the blog is in a permanent beta-state. Content and layout will change over time. Tools to get into touch, email, chat etc will be implemented.

We need to know what YOU (as EAHIL member) think about all this.
As part of the research we will start short polls to gather information about related topics.
