Autonomous Driving by Volvo

Volvo is bring its robo-car army to its home country of Sweden, with 100 autonomous vehicles taking to the roads of Gothenburg in the next three years.

The program is called “Drive Me”, and in collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Transport Agency, and the Lindholmen Science Park, Volvo will put 100 autonomous cars onto the roads of Gothenburg in 2017.

“Autonomous vehicles are an integrated part of Volvo Cars’ as well as the Swedish government’s vision of zero traffic fatalities,” says Volvo president and CEO Håkan Samuelsson. “It will give us an insight into the technological challenges at the same time as we get valuable feedback from real customers driving on public roads.”

Thanksgiving Day has been an annual holiday in the United States since 1863. Not everyone sees Thanksgiving Day as a cause for celebration. Each year since 1970, a group of Native Americans and their supporters have staged a protest for a National Day of Mourning at Plymouth Rock in Plymouth, Massachusetts on Thanksgiving Day.

There are claims that the first Thanksgiving Day was held in the city of El Paso, Texas in 1598. Another early event was held in 1619 in the Virginia Colony. Many people trace the origins of the modern Thanksgiving Day to the harvest celebration that the Pilgrims held in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621. However, their first true thanksgiving was in 1623, when they gave thanks for rain that ended a drought. These early thanksgivings took the form of a special church service, rather than a feast.

In the second half of the 1600s, thanksgivings after the harvest became more common and started to become annual events. However, it was celebrated on different days in different communities and in some places there were more than one thanksgiving each year. George Washington, the first president of the United States, proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving Day in 1789.

2014 Volvo XC60

In its base form, the XC60 gets a 240-horsepower, 3.2-liter in-line six-cylinder engine that gives it a responsive, but not altogether perky, feel. The XC60 is surprisingly hefty (more than 4,200 pounds in AWD guise); but the engine seems to come into its own on the highway and with the responsive six-speed automatic, can pull off very rapid passes. Sporty T6 models get a turbocharged 3.0-liter in-line six, now making 300 horsepower (or 325 in R-Design form), plus suspension improvements, as well as screen-based settings to adjust steering feel.

The XC60 has received its mid-cycle refresh for 2014, meaning that a few of the cosmetic bits have been shuffled around, and it gets a new infotainment system. The headlights, bumper, grille and exhaust have all been updated, and cyclist detection has been added to the City Safe collision avoidance system. Inside, the infotainment system has been improved in both look and feel, and it's easier to use than past models. The nicer Sovereign leather is also available on upper trims of the XC60.

In its evaluation of the 2014 Volvo XC90’s performance, IIHS noted:

Good structural performance in the small overlap front test
Low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of high severity
Side torso and side curtain airbags both deployed.

“The XC90’s structural performance was good in the small overlap front test, and the driver’s space was maintained well,” said IIHS in a released statement. “While many vehicles have had to undergo significant structural changes to earn good ratings in the small overlap test, the XC90 has had the same basic platform since 2003.”

Many pubs and restaurants stage Halloween parties and decorate their houses with fearsome attributes. Halloween has come to stay.

On the island of Öland in the southern Baltic, the arrival of Halloween has led to an upswing in pumpkin growing, and the giant fruits are now quite readily available.

Wireless Vehicle Charging Station

Volvo just completed testing with Flanders' Drive, an automotive technology knowledge center in Belgium and a consortium of other companies, to determine whether wireless charging was practical, efficient and safe in real-world trials. Guess what? It is!

"Cordless technology is a comfortable and effective way to conveniently transfer energy,” said Lennart Stegland, Vice President, Electric Propulsion System at Volvo Car Group. The project won't end there though, as Stegland adds, "There is not yet any common standard for inductive charging. We will continue our research and evaluate the feasibility of the technology in our hybrid and electric car project."

Door Panels Serving as a Battery?

"Using a standard Volvo S80 as a test platform, the company replaced the trunk lid, door panels, and hood with this new material. The rechargeable panels are composed of multiple layers of carbon fiber, which are insulated from each other by fiberglass inserts. The layers of polymer-infused carbon fiber are actually acting as the cathode and anode in this system with super capacitors built into the skin. The result is a structural component that can be charged like the battery in any other EV, either with regenerative braking or by plugging the vehicle into the power grid."

Cyclist Detection

Volvo is introducing the world's first cyclist detection system with full auto-brake, the company announced today, adding to its already five-star-rated safety features.

The Swedish manufacture said an instant warning and full braking power is applied to the Volvo car if the cyclist suddenly swerves out in front of the car and a collision is imminent and can also prevent collisions when a car and bike are headed in the same direction.

Volvo debuted the first-generation auto-brake technology in 2006 and enhanced that safety feature with pedestrian detection with full auto brake in 2010.

"Our solutions for avoiding collisions with unprotected road users are unique in the industry, [and]
by covering more and more objects and situations, we reinforce our world-leading position within automotive safety. We keep moving towards our long-term vision to design cars that do not crash."

said Volvo Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales Doug Speck in a press release.
