Vybz Kartel under investigation for five more murders

Self proclaimed dancehall hero Vybz Kartel is under is being probed for an additional five murders. Vybz Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, has already been charged and is in police custody without bail for two murders thus far. The police are also investigating other individuals in the entertainment industry. Vybz Kartel faces a December 2 court date in regards to his current murder and drug-related charges.

Persad-Bissessar target of assassination plot

Trinidad and Tobago security forces were placed on high alert yesterday after a plot was uncovered to assassinate Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, National Security Minister Brigadier John Sandy, Attorney General Anand Ramlogan and Foreign Affairs and Information Minister Dr. Surujrattan Rambachan. The plot was to be put into action today. Police sources said the threat has also extended to certain senior police officers.

Ontario court stops FMC from using Caribana name

US soldier Roderique killed in Trinidad

Police in Trinidad say a 38-year-old U.S. Army soldier vacationing on the Caribbean island was killed when gunmen rammed his car from behind in Laventille, a rough slum, and then opened fire. Authorities say Sgt. Simeon Roderique was shot Tuesday night shortly after dropping a woman off at her home in Laventille.

Soca artiste Blazer shot dead

Troydon "Blazer" Cruickshank was shot dead by three men who ran into his yard. It is reported that he was shot 25 times. Blazer had been trouble with police on multiple occasions over the years. Previous charges included drug and ammunition possession as well as murder. Cruickshank, who was standing with relatives outside, was shot several times in the chest and died at the scene.

Jamaican reggae star Buju Banton was granted bail in the sum of US$250,000 today in Tampa, Florida. The bail for Banton, real name Mark Myrie came with some strict conditions. Although Buju's supporters will cheer for the decision to grant bail, Banton will have to receive an immigration bond to prevent deportation. The US authorities, however, would want to keep Buju in the US to face his new trial in December 2010.

Jamaat al Muslimeen leader Yasin Abu Bakr, the man who led the 1990 attempted coup, has been charged with murder. Bakr and Brent "Big Brent" Miller were charged yesterday with the murder of Maraval resident Israel Sammy in 1998, following a coroner's inquest into his death. It was within a matter of two hours that Yasin Abu Bakr went from being a free man, to a remand prisoner at the Golden Grove Prison.

A mistrial has been declared in the Buju Banton conspiracy trial in Tampa, Florida. The 12 member jury were split down the middle on the verdict since deliberations began last Thursday. The jury has been deliberating for two days without coming to unanimous verdict. He said he had been friends with Banton for more 19 years and did not know him to be a drug dealer. Buju Banton also took the witness stand in his cocaine trial, denying that he was a trafficker or a financier of any illicit drug activities. Buju said he was naive, and that he was only "talking crap" when he was recorded telling Government informant Alexander Johnson that he was a drug financier.

Bounty Killer was yesterday remanded in custody when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court to answer an assault charge. Bounty, real name Rodney Pryce is accused of beating his girlfriend. Despite a plea from his attorney Christopher Townsend that his client was innocent, Bounty Killer was denied bail by Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey.

Drug Enforcement Agent Daniel McCeaffrey, today testified that he had no evidence that reggae dancehall superstar Buju Banton, was involved in drug dealing. McCeaffrey, who gave evidence on the first day of the trial at the Gibbons US Federal Court in downtown Tampa, said there was no evidence that Buju Banton, real name Mark Myrie, received any money from any drug deal. A 14 member panel of jurors was selected earlier which include seven women, two of which are African Americans.

Ian Thomas, a co-defendant of Buju Banton has entered a plea deal with United States prosecutors and will plead guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine. Banton, a four-time Grammy nominee, is set to stand trial September 20 along with another co-defendant, James Mack, on charges they participated in a cocaine deal in Sarasota, Florida. The charge carries up to life in federal prison.

Assets, including a red Mercedes Benz convertible have been seized from dancehall superstar Elephant Man. Elephant Man, real name, O'Neil Bryan, according to his lawyer Roderick Gordon, "He (Elephant Man) was really shocked this morning. He's telling me police nearly hit down his door. He wasn't sure what's going on, they knocked it hard, something to do with tax obligation they say he owes." The raid was conducted by the Special Enforcement Team at Jamaica Inland Revenue.

Legendary singer, producer and sound owner Lincoln 'Sugar' Minott is dead at age 64. Sugar Minott, who was born Lincoln Barrington Minott on May 25, 1956, earned himself the title Godfather of Dancehall. Sugar is credited with being the pioneer, by laying vocal tracks over the original tapes from the 1960's, rather than using a live band, as was the norm in those days, caused a revolution in the sound that brought a new style to Reggae music known as dancehall.

Reggae danchehall artistes Vybz Kartel will have to spend another 30 days behind bars after Jamaican authorities extended his five-day detention order. When Vybz Kartel turned in himself last week, his original detention was extended from 24 hours to five days. Kartel was detained last week Friday and underwent intense questioning after turning himself to the Greater Portmore Police Station, some three days after the police named him and five other men as major persons of interest.

Having not kept the date to meet with police yesterday, there is word again that Vybz Kartel will show up at a station in Portmore, Jamaica today.

Dudus to be extradited to United States today

Alleged leader of the Shower Posse, Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, has waived his right to an extradition trial. Coke will be transported to the United States by 3 pm today to then answer drugs and gun running charges. Dudus was also served with a Restraint Order by Jamaican authorities, which in essence freezes all of his assets in Jamaica. After a month long manhunt Coke was arrested on Tuesday afternoon on the border of St. Andrew and St. Catherine.
