The Calder Hart scandal

The story filled with allegations against former UDeCOTT chairman Calder Hart is enough to write a book. Hart left Trinidad for Miami last week, but has returned to Trinidad and Tobago yesterday. What happens next is a question for the Director of Public Prosecutions according to Trinidad and Tobago Attorney General John Jeremie.

Jamaica says no to Dudus US extradition

Jamaica Prime Minister Bruce Golding has responded to United State criticism over their refusal to extradite Tivoli Gardens don Dudus. Christopher Coke otherwise known as Dudus has been the subject of an extradition request by the United States since August 25, 2009. The Jamaican government maintains that the evidence presented by the United States was obtained illegally, and as such, the request has been denied.

No to Kartel and Mavado in Barbados

Although Mavado and Vybz Kartel have made peace, the Commissioner of Police in Barbados, Darwin Dottin, is objecting to their joint performance in that country on March 27. Dottin said the force was concerned about the negativity associated with both entertainers. Dottin also said that the force did not have the authority to ban artistes wishing to perform in Barbados, given the provisions of the CARICOM Treaty on freedom of movement, but he urged the organisers to look again.

Trinidad Petrotrin sued in New York

Petrotrin has been sued by World GTL Incorporated and its subsidiary, World GTL (St Lucia), in the United States Federal Court in Manhattan, New York, seeking no less than $12 billion for their losses over the collapse and breach of contract of a joint venture project. The action arose out of the alleged wrongful taking and expropriation of a nearly-completed $3 billion gas-to-liquid plant, being constructed inside the Petrotrin refinery, Pointe-a-Pierre.

Palance wins Road March 2010

JW and Blaze with Palance have undoubtedly won Road March 2010 in Trinidad by leaps and bounds. Even without the official results being announced, Palance was easily the most played tune for Carnival 2010. It will be more difficult to figure out who place second and third in the Road March race. An official with the NCC, has even stated there is really no reason to tally the figures.

Palance for Carnival 2010 in Trinidad

Palance is the word for Carnival 2010 in Trinidad and Tobago. In fact Palance has now launched the dynamic duo of Jason Williams and Ancil Isaac otherwise known as JW and Blaze into the International Soca Monarch history as they beat Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez into second place while palancing with the crowd. Some even believe that Palance will also take the Road March title come Carnival Tuesday.

Elephant Man vs Flippa Mafia at Sting 2009

Since the feud between Flippa Mafia and Elephant Man erupted since the middle of this year, there has been much talk to a clash at Sting 2009. Elephant Man is making it clear he is up for a clash, but only if the money is right, which will for him will definitely run into the millions similar to other top dancehall artists. Flippa Mafia is the upcoming artist who is looking to take a stripe off of the Energy God, Elephant Man.

No Kartel or Mavado at Sting 2009

Sting 2009 will be without Vybz Kartel and Mavado unless both dancehall giants appear together vowing to agree and maintain a peace agreement. The Gully and Gaza supporters, Mavado and Kartel respectively, have been blamed for an upsurge of violence in Jamaica recently. Police sources have indicated that nothing has been agreed to but the ban would include other events as well as Sting 2009.

As environmental groups in Trinidad and Tobago oppose the construction of an aluminum smelter, the Prime Minister, Patrick Manning, who supports the construction, confirmed that Trinidad will be represented at the climate change talks in Copenhagen, Denmark next week. This came after it was announced that the Port of Spain Climate Change Consensus – The Commonwealth Climate Change Declaration was signed after the CHOGM held in Trinidad this week.

Obama and Hu may attend CHOGM in Trinidad and Tobago

United States President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao may attend the Commonwealth Heads Of Goverment Meeting in Trinidad and Tobago. They might be joined by other non-Commonwealth leaders including Prime Minister of Spain, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapetero, and President of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. This became a possibility after Obama and Hu were unable to hammer out a firm agreement on climate change during the visit of Preseident Obama to China recently.

New constitution for Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago political leaders, Prime Minister Patrick Manning and Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday have agreed in principle that Trinidad and Tobago needs a new constitution. Both leaders met yesterday at the newly constructed Diplomatic Centre in St. Ann’s, Trinidad. One stumbling block is in regards to the post of Executive President, with Panday and Manning at odds on the election process.
