And the answer is (IMO)… Yes!! It looks good, but I still prefer good old blue… The theme can be changed by going to the Options menu and under the tab Personal Stuff, there are two buttons under Themes, just click the GTK Theme button if you want full integration with the Gnome desktop. Click the other button if you want to go back to blue!

From the user’s perspective, Firefox 3.5 is better – but not dramatically so. The first notable new feature is private browsing, a catch-up with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Google Chrome that lets you browse web sites without leaving traces in browser history or temporary files. Next comes Tear Off Tabs, which – as in Apple’s Safari – allows tabs to be dragged into a separate browser window. Video is a central improvement of Firefox 3.5, according to Vice President of Engineering Mike Shaver, who told TechRadar that work was well underway on making the browser even better. “3.5 is important to keep the momentum going from 3.0,” said Shaver. “It brings some momentous tools to the browser including video and extreme high performance javascript. “We’re going to continue to improve – this isn’t a fire and forget thing and you know we have these graphs of our performance and already our trunk builds for the next version are another 20 to 30 percent faster”

As you can see, it already has the minimize, maximize and close buttons (top right) that are fully integrated into Chromium,, no more Gnome window borders (you can still toggle this) that make the browser look ugly. Great Job!

Looks ugly uh!? So, in your opinion which one looks better?

Today I’ve decided to give Gnote a try and install it on my system, I used the unofficial Gnote PPA for Ubuntu provided by Vadim Peretokin, at the moment it still hasn’t been updated to the latest version of Gnote, but I’m sure it will soon. My first impressions were good, it loaded a lot faster than Tomboy, 2.324 seconds versus the 0.280 seconds of Gnote and it was also  three times lighter than Tomboy, maybe because of all of the Mono bloat that Tomboy depends on…

After this, I realized that Gnote was all that I needed for taking notes and decided to remove Tomboy and therefore remove the hole Mono stack from my system too. Tomboy was the only application holding me back from removing this patent trap from my system. Oh!, and F-Spot, that was removed a long time ago, I don’t need anything to organize my pictures… Here’s the result:

Hmm, let’s see… I not only removed bloat from my computer, but also removed a patent trap and gained 52MB of disk space, it may not sound much, but for netbooks that have limited hardrives, this is the way to go!! Roy has already covered this at Boycottnovell, he also mentioned me on his post.

Oh, and by the way, for those who want to create conflicts with Mono packages and therefore prevent Mono from being installed, go for Mononono.

We have rebuilt all of our nearly 200,000 videos at the archive!

We will make a new Ogg Theora (with Vorbis audio) opensource/free-based video derivative. This derivative will play natively in Firefox 3.1 release (v3.1 is due around the end of 2008).

Rederiving our movies to Ogg Theora and more!

The Archive actively supports the free software ecosystem, and is now busy re-deriving copies of all their videos into both Ogg Theora and H.264 (mp4) codecs. So far they have more than 40% of the videos converted, and hope to have the rest done by December 2008. This makes each of these videos easily accessible on the OLPC XO, by looking in the left margin for the download/stream link for the Ogg Video version. As each is converted, it immediately becomes accessible at www.archive.org/details/movies.

Bloove , as I mentioned in the title, is a web-based mobile phone management, or web-based cell phone management. I’ve started using this useful free service for a couple of days now and I’m very satisfied with the features we can have for being a free user. This service allows you to edit address book contacts and speed dial settings, initiate calls and work with messages. All from your favorite browser. It is like PC Suite for the web, all you need is a wireless connection like GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, Wi-Fi, etc… No cable or infrared is needed, you will need to install Bloove Agent application on your phone, and no installs are required on the desktop. Of course as it is free there are some limits, such as you will not be able to connect more than one cell phone to your account and the contact archive is limited to 15 items, all the other features have no limits. You may manage an unlimited number of contacts on the phone, and there is no time limit – basic functions will be free forever. As they say in their FAQ, they are planning on introducing premium options such as more number of mobile phones and archive items allowed.

Now you are probably wondering where you can sign up, try this link and install the Bloove Agent and provide the secure ID displayed by the agent on your cell phone into your browser, you can install Bloove Agent buy pointing your cell phone browser here and it will automatically choose the version according to your cell phone. Now let’s have a look on the inside. First thing I can say is that they are really good on the design stuff, they have a nice, simple and very intuitive control panel, the colors just combine all together, turning it into a very beautiful website. It has some kind of a status bar on the header position that gives you information on the sync process between the Bloove servers and your cell phone. On my cell phone (Nokia 6600, old but still works ) I downloaded Bloove Agent, inserted the ID displayed by the application after my first run, and it synchronized all my important data into my control panel on its first run, very fast and simple, the application has nothing to it except for starting it and choosing the internet connection if you have more than one.

I tried sending a text message from my browser to me (just a test), what did it do? Well, to send a text message to anybody, you have to have your phone synchronized and connected to the internet, then when you click on the send button it triggers Bloove Agente on giving an order to your phone to send what your wrote to a specific number that you mentioned on your browser, they also have a call feature that I haven’t tried yet, but should be similar to the text message one.

This is really something you should use if you have a compatible phone with Bloove Agent, it’s always a good thing to have this kind of backup of your data, never know when you will lose it if you only have it stored in one place.

New features and changes in this release include:

• Improved security features such as: better presentation of website identity and security, malware protection, stricter SSL error pages, anti-virus integration in the download manager, and version checking for insecure plugins.
• Improved ease of use through: better password management, easier add-on installation, new download manager with resumable downloading, full page zoom, animated tab strip, and better integration with Windows Vista and Mac OS X.
• Richer personalization through: one-click bookmarking, smart search bookmark folders, direct typing in location bar searches your history and bookmarks for URLs and page titles, ability to register web applications as protocol handlers, and better customization of download actions for file types.

In this post I’m going to write about the top 5 php scripts that I think everybody should use, these scripts can be used for websites, forum boards, blogs, etc… use your imagination, and of course they are free and open source.

1. PHPBB: is a popular Internet forum package written in the PHP programming language. The name “phpBB” is an abbreviation of PHP Bulletin Board. Available under the GNU General Public License, phpBB is free software.(in wikipedia). I’ve used this script for some testing a while ago, and it is pretty good, its fast and reliable, has a wide variety of templates and mods, and the support is also a good thing. What I don’t like is seeing these boards getting hacked, I don’t really know if its the script’s problem or if it is for being so popular that hackers keep on hacking phpbb forum boards. PHPBB.
2. SMF: Simple Machines Forum (abbreviated as SMF) is a freeware Internet forum script. The script is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database backend, although multi-database support is being developed for the next major release. SMF is developed by the Simple Machines development team.(in wikipedia). This is another free script for forum boards, I am recently using it and testing it at the same time and I just love it. You can update your forum board with just 2-4 clicks, its simples, fast easy to use. Has a wide variety of mods, but a shortage of templates. Good thing about it is that I’ve never seen an SMF board hacked, but if you’ve seen one feel free to post a comment with a screenshot of something. SMF.
3. Joomla: is a free, open source content management system for publishing content. Joomla! includes features such as page caching to improve performance, RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, polls, website searching, and language internationalization. Joomla! is licensed under the GPL, and is the result of a fork of Mambo. It is written with the PHP programming language and uses the MySQL database.(in wikipedia). Had a website running with Joomla a while back, it has a very nice backend, with a lot of useful features. You can get tons of components, pulgins and modules, it has very good support a very large variety of web 2.0 templates. What I don’t like is that its a slow script in my opinion. Don’t have anything else to say about it. Joomla.
4. Wordpress: is a blog publishing system written in PHP and backed by a MySQL database. WordPress is the official successor of b2\cafelog, developed by Michel Valdrighi. The name WordPress was suggested by Christine Selleck, a friend of lead developer Matt Mullenweg.(in wikipedia) I using this script for a while now for blogging and its a pretty good script, although they could really improve the backend design. Wordpress has a wide variety of nice templates, very useful and advanced plugins. The support could be better but I always had my problems solved with time, its a very fast script if you don’t use junk (all those unnecessary plugins which don’t do anything special to you blog). Wordpress.
5. Mambo Mambo (formerly named Mambo Open Source or MOS) is a free software / open source content management system (CMS) for creating and managing websites through a simple web interface.(in wikipedia). Tested this script, but never really used it for a website, I just wanted to have a look at it and I did. My first impression is that it’s very similar to Joomla or Joomla is very similar to Mambo, the conclusion that I can’t take from it, is that using Mambo or Joomla is apparently the same thing. Can’t write a lot about it because a haven’t really got really deep in to it, but its a good script in my opinion for any kind of websites. Mambo.

I know this is only 5 scripts, and thats why I say I’m really writing here what I think and not who other people think because this was written by me and it’s unique, Right!?! So, when I have some time, I will test some more scripts and do a top 10 or maybe a top 15 of PHP scripts. So stay tunned!!

Now here comes the problems. He had to install a program which he only found on the internet and it came in a tar.gz archive, and he asked me how to install a tar.gz archive, and I did a search on Google on “How to install a tar.gz file”, and gave him the Google link and told him that Google is his friend. He saw some search results and now here comes the the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard in my life, he asked me where to put the commands, well I really didn’t know what to say, I tried to keep my nerves down and politely told him to open the console. He successfully installed the program and once again he thanked me, I told him not to ask me anymore of those weird questions like where to put the commands, and “Google it” before you ask anyone of what your question is. The next problem was that sometimes his NTFS partitions weren’t auto mounting on Ubuntu, he asked me why was that, and I said “Google it dude”, when I said this I thought he got mad at me or something, he stopped talking to me for a couple of minutes and so I asked him why didn’t he Google for it before asking me any questions, and he replied: ” Its a lot easier if I ask you about the problems I’m having” and I said “Man, you Windows guys are really lazy bums, always depending of the little Linux guys, I’m not going to answer anymore of your questions, Life is hard to so get use to it”, so he got really mad and told me no f*** off, and blocked me.

Now, I’m going to ask, did I do the right choice?, Is Linux that hard to understand that not even Google has the solution for your questions? Have you encountered any of these Windows Lazy people?

I’m a boy student always ready to learn, I’m a web master and one of the things I love most is Open Source. I use Linux and Windows, (I need Windows because of the games). Oh ya!! I forgot to mention something… My website is optimized for Firefox, of course I’m not going to give redirects to a different website just because some of you visitors use Internet Explorer, Opera or Safari or any kind a web broswer, but please use Firefox for viewing this blog at its best.
