jQuery is a regular topic for posts at tripwire magazine and it is really because there constantly are new releases of useful plugins that readers can benefit from and should know about – and because I’m generally a great fan of jQuery and like to keep an eye on what is going on. This post provides 10 just released but really cool and useful plugins for jQuery. Check the list out as it is very likely that you will find new stuff here that you can’t resist using to spice up your website or blog.

YoxView

YoxView is a free image viewer for websites. It’s written in javascript using jQuery and is available as a jQuery plugin. The transition between images is looking really great and the plugin is really worth checking out if you need a image viewer on your site. (Released March 8th, 2010)

spritely

jQuery.spritely is a jQuery plugin created by Artlogic for creating dynamic character and background animation in pure HTML and JavaScript. It’s a simple, light-weight plugin with a few simple methods for creating animated sprites such as the birds you see on the main page, and dynamic scrolling backgrounds. Check out the gallery to see this awesome script in action! Spritely is brand new (March 2010)

TinyTips

TinyTips is a very lightweight jQuery plugin that gives the ability to add tooltips to pretty much any element on a page. Thoroughly documented and designer friendly. Released February 4th 2010.

TipTip

TipTip is a very lightweight and intelligent custom tooltip jQuery plugin. It uses ZERO images and is completely customizable via CSS. It’s also only 3.5kb minified!

jQuery Ajax Upload

This solution ditch the upload button in favor of a save button and fire the AJAX upload event as soon as a file is selected. The image is processed server side and a thumbnail is loaded onto the existing page. We now have a visual representation (imagine that) of the image we selected. This is particularly useful in larger forms when many fields will be submitted with a single action. It allows the user to review the form before pressing save and see what image (or images) they selected.

jQuery outside events

With jQuery outside events you can bind to an event that will be triggered only when a specific “originating” event occurs outside the element in question. For example, you can click outside, double-click outside, mouse-over outside, focus outside (and over ten more default “outside” events). Also, if an outside event hasn’t been provided by default, you can easily define your own. Let’s say you have a modal dialog. In addition to a standard “close dialog” button, you want the user to be able to click anywhere outside the dialog to close it. Instead of creating a background overlay that the user must click on, you can just use this plugin!

PicNet Table Filter

This jQuery plugin adds real time Google-like column filtering capabilities to a regular Html table. This plugin will create the filters in a row in the THEAD element of the table so this needs to be added if it is not already there. Entering filter criteria works fine and table is instantly updated.

jQuery Keyz Plugin

The purpose of this plugin is to easily facilitate the end user to create and hook key presses for their own use. Usually you would need to know what key links with which keycode etc.

Firebug is packed with useful features that make the life for web developers much easier. Being able to inspect an element on a page and instantly get access to the html and css used to render it is my personal favorite and the fact that it is possible to edit the code and see the result instantly is an insanely useful feature. Although Firebug is packed with features there are several interesting extensions that enhance its capabilities. FireQuery for jQuery Development

IF you’re doing a lot of front end development you are probably using jQuery and Firebug already. FireQuery is a Firebug extension for jQuery development and I’m pretty sure it is useful to you. jQuery expressions are intelligently presented in the Firebug Console and the DOM inspector with the elements in the jQuery collections highlighted on hover. This is very useful for creating html and css that perfectly match the design. By toggling the composition on and off, the developer can visually see how many pixels they are off in development.

Pixel Perfect also has an opacity option so that you can view the HTML below the composition.

Firepicker adds a small color picker dialog when editing CSS rule in Firebug. HttpFox

This is not a firebug extension but it is so useful that I decided to add it anyway. HttpFox monitors and analyzes all incoming and outgoing HTTP traffic between the browser and the web servers. This is a essential tool for tracking strange errors and knowing exactly what is going on (sent and received back from the server). Would be great to have HttpFox integrated into Firebug don’t you think?

MySQL is probably the most popular database ever and it is open source and entirely free. The free version of MySQL is all over the place and serve as the foundation of the popular CMS systems covered above and loads and loads of other systems. Most MySQL users know the database through the famous web client for MySQL phpMyAdmin giving user almost complete web based control. Early last year the database community was shocked and in fear because Oracle had picked up MySQL (as part of taking over SUN) and the future of MySQL was unclear for some time. Oracle was under pressure and answered some of the open questions on a press release December 2009.

Apache webserver

Apache httpd has been the most popular web server on the Internet since April 1996. Apache is free, rock solid, performing very well and at the same time extremely flexible and feature rich. Apache is serving all the famous and popular blogs and websites running on platforms like Wordpress, Joomla etc. and many more counting hundreds of millions. Apache is also very popular in enterprise infrastructures where it serves as a software reverse proxy component in front of portals, b2b gateways etc. Apaches strengths really comes from its module system and from awesome modules like mod_rewrite which provides a powerful way to do URL manipulations.

Apache Tomcat

Apache Tomcat is an open source software implementation of the Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages technologies. Apache Tomcat powers numerous large-scale, mission-critical web applications across a diverse range of industries and organizations. Tomcat should not be confused with the Apache web server, which is a C implementation of an HTTP web server. Tomcat is a free and light weight container that will serve your Java web projects.

Magento

Magento, used by 30,000 merchants, including Samsung, Nespresso and The North Face, is the world’s fastest growing e-commerce platform. Magento Community Edition is offered for free under the Open Software License. The Enterprise Edition, for which you have to pay, offers features like multi-store capability, store credits and gift cards, out-of-the-box.

aptana

Aptana is built on Eclipse, which is a very mature open-source project. Aptena is very popular and have been downloaded more than 5.000.000 times. It supports html, css and javascript editing natively and features a really useful site manager. It includes Subclipse as a supported plugin, and has plugins for PHP, Ruby, JavaScript, and Adobe Air environments. It even does iPhone-specific development. Aptena comes with tight integration into their own cloud hosting service.

Netbeans

Netbeans is a free, open-source Integrated Development Environment for software developers. It started out as a pure Java IDE but it is now one of the broadest and feature rich around. You get all the tools you need to create professional desktop, enterprise, web, and mobile applications with the Java language, as well as C/C++, PHP, JavaScript, Groovy, and Ruby. Netbeans is know for starting up fast and for great debugging capabilities.

Notepad++

Reliable, customizable, intuitive and free, Notepad++ is the most popular Windows-based CSS editor around. It offers everything: syntax highlighting; folding and auto-completion for CSS, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, SQL, HTML, XML and PHP; multi-file viewing; tabbed editing; zoom in/out; and bookmarks.

Inkscape

Inkscape is a cross-platform vector-based graphics application, and is probably the best free open source option available. It can be used for creating professional graphics, logos, diagrams, icons, maps and many more. It offers features that can be found in similar commercial software and it aims to be more user friendly, while still supporting advanced SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics ) features (markers, clones, alpha blending, etc.). The tool also allows the end-user to import many popular formats such as JPEG, BMP, PNG, EPS and TIFF and export PNG file formats.

Many people know from their own experience that it’s not easy to install an Apache web server and it gets harder if you want to add MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP have changed this and simply is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really essential for setting up a development environment fast locally. XAMPP is supported on multiple operating systems: Windows, Linux, OS/X, Solaris.

BIND

BIND is by far the most widely used DNS software on the Internet. It provides a robust and stable platform on top of which organizations can build distributed computing systems with the knowledge that those systems are fully compliant with published DNS standards. It is a reference implementation of the Domain Name System (DNS) protocols, but it is also production-grade software, suitable for use in high-volume and high-reliability applications.

Below, we take a close look at the cream of the crop: 20 invaluable and indispensable open source applications that you really should be using, if you’re not already. The vast majority of them are cross-platform and absolutely 100% free! You’re bound to find several that are perfectly suited to your needs.

1. WordPress

WordPress is the world’s most popular blogging platform, used by a staggering 202 million websites. As simple or as complex as you want it to be, WordPress is supported by a wide array of plugins which can be used to transform a standard blog into anything you could possibly desire. Besides blogs, WordPress can be used as a straightforward content management system to power anything from an e-commerce site to a social network.

2. Magento

Magento, used by 30,000 merchants, including Samsung, Nespresso and The North Face, is the world’s fastest growing e-commerce platform. Magento Community Edition is offered for free under the Open Software License. The Enterprise Edition, for which you have to pay, offers features like multi-store capability, store credits and gift cards, out-of-the-box.

Pidgin is the ultimate, free instant messaging tool. It provides you with one window through which you can simultaneously interact with different people, whichever instant messaging platform they’re using.

13. Freemind

Freemind is a terrific mind-mapping tool, which lets you get all your thoughts down as quickly as possible with the use of icons, shapes and colors. Besides the ordinary nodes and links, you can add hyperlinks and even documents to your maps.

14. Notepad++

Reliable, customizable, intuitive and free, Notepad++ is the most popular Windows-based CSS editor around. It offers everything: syntax highlighting; folding and auto-completion for CSS, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, SQL, HTML, XML and PHP; multi-file viewing; tabbed editing; zoom in/out; and bookmarks.

15. 7-Zip

Blender is a 3D content creation suite which can be used for everything from modeling to skinning, particle simulation, animating and texturing. Unlike some other free apps in this list, Blender has not been designed to “imitate” other 3D graphics software, which means it takes a bit of getting used to, but once you’ve familiarized yourself with all the shortcuts, you’ll be hooked.

17. PDFCreator

Windows users can consider PDFCreator a credible rival to Adobe Acrobat. Creating PDFs is as easy as printing, literally, as once installed, you can select PDFCreator as your printer, letting you create PDFs from practically any application.

Having full control of elements on a page and the order they are presented in can be quite useful. jQuery as always is a safe choice to go for. There are several good quality plugins to pick from. This post provides an overview of plugins you can use to provide simple yet powerful functionality to reorder, filter, add drag and drop capabilities etc.

jQuery Interface Elements

Interface is a collection of rich interface components which utilizes the lightweight JavaScript library jQuery. With this components you can build rich client web applications and interfaces with the same simplicity as writing JavaScript with jQuery. You will find functions for reordering/sorting lists and tabs, various types of drag and drop etc.

Using jQuery To Manipulate and Filter Data

When a webpage is designed to display large tables of data, a great amount of consideration should be dedicated to allowing the user to sort through the data in a structured manner. This article will go through four techniques: hover effects, zebra rows, filtering, and sorting.

Creating a “Filterable” Portfolio with jQuery

If you have worked in your field for a while, there is a pretty good chance that you have a rather extensive portfolio. To make it a little easier to navigate, you will probably be tempted to break them into different categories. This tutorial will show you how to make “filtering by category” a little more interesting with just a little bit of jQuery.

Table Drag and Drop JQuery plugin

Dragging and dropping rows within a table can’t be handled by general purpose drag and drop utilities for a number of reasons, not least because you need to move the whole row, not just the cell that receives the mouse events. Re-parenting the row also requires specific code. Sadly also, effects like fadeIn and fadeOut don’t work well with table rows on all browsers, so we have to go for simpler effects.

This TableDnD plugin allows the user to reorder rows within a table, for example if they represent an ordered list (tasks by priority for example). Individual rows can be marked as non-draggable and/or non-droppable (so other rows can’t be dropped onto them). Rows can have as many cells as necessary and the cells can contain form elements.

List Reorder

List Reorder is a jQuery plugin that allows you to reorder any simple ordered or unordered list. List Reorder is easy to use and does not require any additional markup. Its look and feel is completely customizable using a set of CSS classes.

Filtering Blocks

Really cool script to filter a list of blocks. Each block has a wrapping div. It has one class that it shares with all other blocks for common styling and a class unique to its “type”.

Sortable Lists Using jQuery UI

Unordered lists have a number of useful applications.  They are commonly used to structure a site’s navigation.  I have found, in a number of web applications, that the ability to reorder (sort) such lists would be extremely useful. There are 2 jQuery plugins that allow elements to be sorted.  These are the jQuery Interface plugin and jQuery UI and this tutorial use the latter and also provides a solution for saving the lists.

ppDrag

ppDrag is a Drag&Drop plugin for jQuery, which mimics the interface of jQuery UI’s Draggable. Currently supported is a small subset of its options, but the implementation is different (ppDrag focuses on performance).

NestedSortable

NestedSortable is an extension to the original Sortable from the Interface plugin that allows you to both sort vertically and nest (make one item a child of other item) elements at the same time, using drag-and-drop. If can be set up exactly like a regular Sortable and allows you to use most options that are inherited from it.

jQuery UI multiple draggable plugin

The jQuery multiple draggable plugin is an extension to the jQuery UI Draggable plugin. This plugin extends the current functionality to allow for elements to be grouped and dragged as a group.

jQuery List DragSort

A lightweight jQuery plugin that provides the ability to sort lists using drag and drop.

Drag and Drop ordering in a TreePanel

This example shows basic drag and drop node moving in a tree. In this implementation there are no restrictions and anything can be dropped anywhere except appending to nodes marked "leaf" (the files).

Drag along the edge of the tree to trigger auto scrolling while performing a drag and drop.

dragtable: Visually reorder all your table columns

Over the past several years, Stuart Langridge’s sorttable Javascript library has found widespread use. It’s easy to see why. Just add class=sortable to a table tag and its column headers automatically support click to sort. Pretty slick.

But sometimes sorting just isn’t enough. What if you want to focus on just one or two of the columns in a table? In a client-side application you could drag the columns you care about next to each other. Why not in a web application?

Enter dragtable. Like sorttable, it teaches HTML tables a new trick through a simple class attribute.
