Visit The Parks In The Florida Keys

In order to preserve the natural beauty of the Florida Keys, much of the land has been set aside as state parks, private parks, and reserves. Ten of those parks are state parks. Many activities are offered in these parks and you could easily spend an entire vacation enjoying the beauty that the Florida Keys offer.

The very first park you will encounter when traveling south near Key Largo is called Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park. While the name of the park is quite a mouthful, it is well worth the $1.50 admission fee to walk the trails among the Hammock trees and admire the butterflies and birds that abound. There are many species of animals that are protected and live in this park.

As you head south, the next park is John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. It encompasses 70 nautical miles of coral reef, natural mangrove swamps and other abundant wildlife. This state park offers snorkeling, kayaking, scuba diving and hiking just to name a few. There are picnic areas and a designated beach area where swimming is allowed. It even has a campground. Be sure to enter the nature center where you will notice a huge floor to ceiling saltwater aquarium. This aquarium holds over 30,000 gallons of seawater and exhibits many of the area's aquatic life.

Continuing south near the small town of Islamorada, the next state park is Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park. This park is located on top of fossilized coral, which was quarried in the 1920s to help build the railroad. You can stand near the edge of the quarry to view the beautiful colors of the coral.

Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park, Indian Key Historic State Park, San Pedro Underwater Archaeological Preserve State Park, and Long Key State Park are all within 10 miles of each other. They are all similar in that they offer hiking trails, but there are some differences. Indian Key is a small island unto itself and the only way to reach it is via a small boat or canoe. San Pedro State Park is a site that is preserving the San Pedro, a Spanish ship that sank in 1733. And Long Key State Park is best viewed by canoe or kayak because the area is made up of channels and canals that wind throughout the park

Continuing south for about 11 miles on Highway 1, you will encounter a small state park called Curry Hammack State Park. This park offers daytime family fun with picnic tables, barbecue grills, beaches and playgrounds. While 12 miles south of the town of Marathon is the state park, Bahia Honda. This state park is rather large and offers quite a few amenities. In addition to hiking, snorkeling, swimming and camping, Bahia Honda hosts many festivals and events. The park also includes access to vendors where food can be purchased or water sport gear can be rented.

And finally, to make your tour of Florida Keys state parks complete, the most southern US state park is located on the south side of Key West. It is the Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park. Fort Zachary Taylor was built in the 1860s to protect our southern border during the Civil War. This park offers all of the same amenities as the others, but in addition there are guided tours describing the historical significance of the Fort. As you can see, you could spend weeks exploring all of the state parks that are located in the Florida Keys.

New York Style Pizza

While I am not a true New Yorker, I am a true Italian and I love my pizza. When I was younger I was a fan of the chain restaurants pizza. Pizza Hut and Dominos were among my favorite. It wasn't until I was in college and started going into New York more often that I realized how horrible those really were. New York pizza is untouchable and anyone who tries to mimic those pizzas should just pack it up now.

If you look at the crust of a New York pizza, you will see how crisp and dark it is. Most New York pizzas are baked in a brick oven. Only one of these restaurants can say that they use a coal fire brick oven but mainstream brick ovens are the norm and do the job just as well.

One thing I always hated about other pizzas was that the cheese was put on so thick that when you tried to eat it, the cheese slid right off. This was usually because someone put way to much cheese on the pizza. It does not make for good pizza. How many times have you gotten upset when you got home with a pizza pie only to find out that during all the movement your car did on the way home, the cheese came right off it. New York style pizza does not have this problem because they use the freshest ingredients they can find. You can tell the difference between pizzas that have been made using fresh mozzarella and pizza's that have been made using pre-shredded. You can not only see the difference, you can also taste the difference. Fresh mozzarella flavors the whole pie because the oils that are in it leaks right on to the pie itself. The bread absorbs the flavor and in return you get a pie that is delicious with each bite.

The sauce is key also. I use to hate pies that were overloaded with sauce. There were also pies that had chunks of onion or peppers in the sauce. A true New York pizza uses a very thin layer of sauce that isn't dressed up with lots of onions and peppers. Most pizzerias add a little something special to their sauces to make it their own and the rest of us will remain clueless as to what it is. I have heard some really good guesses in some pizzerias. Some people seem to think that nutmeg is the secret ingredient. Others feel paprika is the key. I've heard truly outrageous ones such as added vanilla to the sauce. It is almost a game in the pizzeria's as customers try to figure out what is in the sauces and the employees sit and laugh at the guesses.

My favorite part of the pizza however is the bread itself. There is no other pizza in the world that has a bottom like New York pizza. The bottom of the pizza is usually blackened by the brick ovens and it gives the whole pizza a smoky enhancement. To me it is the best part of the pizza.

While now I don't get to New York as often as I would like, I do manage to grab a slice of pizza every time I go into the city. New Jersey does have some very good pizzerias but they can't hold a torch to New York.

Seeing Seattle Through The Eyes Of A Child

If you are planning to visit Seattle Washington any time in the near future I hope you are either bringing along your children, or the child in you at the very least. Why you ask? Well, the answer to that is simple, because there are so many fun things for children to do in Seattle.

In addition to the many parks spread throughout the city, and by that, I mean that Seattle has several extraordinary parks. Among those great parks are: Alki Playfield, Cal Anderson Park (which boasts a wading pool and a gigantic chess set), Cascade Playground (which features free music Fridays from noon until 2:00), Discovery Park, and Woodland Park. But parks and playgrounds are just a start. Seattle really has so much more to offer than just this.

There is the Children's Repertory Theatre, which offers plays and musicals that are sure to delight children of all ages. In addition to the theatre, Seattle has an excellent Children's Museum. For hands on learning, there is the Pacific Science Center and to aid in a healthy respect and appreciation of musical arts, there is the Experience Music Project.

If you have a child or are a child that wants to grow up and touch the stars, the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame might be in order. And there's always Gameworks' for the child in all of us that has never outgrown playing video games. For little boys that may never grow up there is the Northwest Railway Museum and the Boeing Tour that shows how these huge planes is made. There is also the Museum of Flight, which consistently ranks as one of the top museums in this category worldwide.

If your child is a lover of animals, there is so much to do and see in and around Seattle that it is difficult to know where to begin. I'll start with Wolf Haven, which offers daily tours that last about an hour and provide visitors an opportunity to observe these magnificent animals in a natural surrounding. Next, there is Northwest Trek, which allows guests to take a tram ride through their park for the purpose of observing several animals in a natural environment. One of my favorites is Cougar Mountain Park, which is really a one of a kind experience for any animal lover. This park takes animals that are endangered and shelters them while providing education and enlightenment about the plight of these animals and the effect they have on the ecosystem.

In addition to these animal havens, there is Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, the Seattle Aquarium, and Woodland Park Zoo. Each of these is more common as far as zoos and/or aquariums go but offer the opportunity to view animals just the same. Also, there is my personal favorite Seattle activity, whale watching. You can either charter a boat or take your child out to Lime Kiln Point State Park to look for these magnificent creatures. Either way, this activity will probably be the highlight of your trip for your child, especially if you happen to see one of these beauties.

If that isn't enough, Seattle is the host city for several professional sports teams. If you or your inner child loves sports, then this is the city to visit. Almost every major sport is represented. There are the Sonics, the Storm, The Mariners, The Seahawks, and the Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds are a Western Hockey League team but a professional team just the same and you really don't want to get me started on the NHL for now, that would take days of writing.

At any rate, it would be really wonderful to me, if I could see Seattle just once through the eyes of a child. The closest thing I can hope for is to see it through the eyes of my children and hope that they develop the same respect and appreciation for this great city that I have.
