Laptop Cooling Guide

Does your notebook run hot or overheat? If it does, you are not alone. This guide is designed to help you reduce the temperature of your notebook considerably, all for little or no money and a few tweaks.

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for any damages caused if you use this guide. Be careful and all will be fine, but do proceed at your own risk!

Step 1: Fan Cleaning

Cost: $0-$7

Time: 10 to 15 Minutes

Difficulty: Easy

Applies to: Everyone

Maintaining your notebook is important. The occasional wipe down is good, but that doesn't take care of the inside. Dust accumulates inside the notebook's cooling system after a while. It prevents air from flowing freely and traps heat.
In order to get the dust out, you need a few supplies. The best way to get the heat out is with some canned compressed air, but that will cost you about $5 - $7 per can, depending on the store. It is well worth the money in my opinion. It can also be used to blow out the keyboard and other places in and on your notebook, such as ports. A cheaper but less effective way of getting dust out is by using a cotton swab and a handheld vacuum cleaner. I will show you how to do both.
Before you start, turn off the notebook completely, unplug it from the wall, and take out the battery. Push down the power button a few times to drain any electricity running around.
You must open up your notebook to access the fan(s). Turn the notebook upside down, and look for the compartment(s) where the fan(s) are. I suggest placing a towel under your notebook so the top doesn't get scratched. Unscrew all the screws holding down the compartment and carefully remove it. Place it and the screws in a safe place where they won't roll away.

With the internals of your notebook exposed, don't touch any of them -- oil from your hands is not good to get on the components, and you want to minimize the risk of damaging anything.

Using canned air:
Open the package, read the directions on how to use the canned air -- it is very straightforward -- point and shoot. Before you start blasting the air into your notebook, squirt it a couple of times to get any moisture out of the nozzle. Once nothing but air comes out of the can, then you are ready to start. Hold the nozzle about 1-2 inches away from the fans and other dust-coated components and use quick bursts to blow any crud off. Be sure to blow out the fan and heat vents too, not just the physical fan. That's all you need to do. Some packages of canned air come with a plastic tube which you can insert into the nozzle. It helps concentrate the airflow. I recommend using this if your package has it -- you can get hard to reach places easier and it is more effective.
Using cotton swabs:
Take the cotton swabs and brush off all the fan blades and anything else that has dust on it. Once the swab is coated in dust, flick it with your fingers to clear the dust off of it. Don't use the same swab the whole time, get a new one after a couple of uses.
When you are finished, get the handheld vacuum cleaner and suck up all the dust. Don't touch the notebook with the vacuum. Use your lung power to blow out the dust and help the vacuum cleaner as well. Repeat the steps above if there is still dust you missed in there. Get out as much as you can.

Number Two: Cooling Pad

Time: 1-2 minutes
Difficulty: Easy

A cooling pad is the best possible investment you can make for cooling down your computer. They increase the airflow under the computer, and greatly help the cooling system.
There are many different coolers on the market.There are various types of cooling pad. You can choose it depend on what design you like.

Number Three: Undervolting
Cost: $0
Time: 10-15 min (install, set voltage), 1.5-2.5 hours to test
Difficulty: Moderate-Hard
Applies to: Technical/More Advanced users
This is not a step everyone can use -- my guide only applies to an Intel Pentium M (Sonoma) processor.
Undervolting is a no-cost way of cutting down heat and power consumption in your notebook by reducing the amount of CPU voltage. It also increases battery life.
You will need a program to undervolt -- I will be using Notebook Hardware Control (NHC) for my Intel CORE i3 M380 (2.53GHz) CPU. This software will automatically configure your laptop for the most suitable setting to reduce the power usage and cooling down your laptop.

Step Four: Arctic Silver 5
Cost: $7-$30
Time: 20-40 minutes to apply
Difficulty: Hard
Applies to: Advanced users
Arctic Silver 5 (AS5) is a thermal compound made of 99.9% pure silver. It can take off up to ten degrees from your CPU, which is substantial. Keep in mind that this isn't the easiest option, but can yield excellent results if done right.
Before you buy AS5, make sure you can get direct access to your CPU. If you cannot, then this step is not possible.

Turn off your notebook, unplug it, and remove the battery and bottom compartments to access the CPU. You may need to remove the heatsink or fan assemblies above the CPU. After allowing the Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound to set for the recommended 200 hours, I have seen a 3 C drop in temperature -- it gets better over time. Up to seven degrees can be taken off.
I also noticed a difference in the amount of heat put off at full throttle. My notebook's fans do not come on nearly as often as they used to because the peak temperature is lower by 2 C.

Lately i've been working on a new wordpress platform for my video blog and a personal blog. For that, I've downloaded a lot of plugins for my wordpress platfrom. After been testing and using some of the plugins, here I'll advice a couple plugin that a wordpress platform must have. All these plugin is not basic plugin like All in One Seo or WP-Cache.

It function like Diggbar. This plugin will shortened the outbound link. It also give you 'YourSiteBar' like Diggbar. This will completely make a passive link to your website.

How to Fix Slow Computer

Why need to fix slow computer. Is it obvious? To satisfy your self!! 90% of computer user does not pay attention to their computer health compare to their car. They use computer everyday to type document, listening to songs, surfing the internet but they forgot to do maintenance to their computer. The main problems that causing this slow computer problem are disorganized files, unnecessary software, lot of software running in background, dead registry, or even worse is the computer been infected by viruses or spyware without you knowing it.

The following tips could help you to fix slow computer. This guide is prepared for both Windows XP and Vista by Ben Tiew from onlineDIYguy.com.

1. Backup all your data from My Documents. This is the place where usually your saved files are located. How to backup? Just copy all of those files to other place or drive such as drive D: or external hard disk or burn them into DVD/CD.

2. Clean unwanted software from windows premade Uninstaller(Add/Remove Programs). Find big software that you rarely use. From the uninstaller, you can see the size of the software that been installed, and the frequency the software been used.

3. Clean your Windows Registry. The registry is the important part of your software to work. If you mistakenly deleted the important registry, some of your software might crash or even worse, your windows crash! To fix slow computer, you can use software to repair your registry. Refer to my Registry Repair post.

4. Disk Clean Up and Defragmantation. This option is pre-installed in windows. They located at START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS. First, do the Disk Clean Up first for drive C: then only after that you can defrag your drive C: Why drive C: ? because your windows and other operating and operation is located in drive C: (usually) but if you are not so sure where your operating and operation software located, just clean up all drives and defrag all drives. This will fix slow computer problems.

5. Do virus and spyware scan using Antivirus and spyware software. You can get the free antivirus from AVG and spyware from HERE.

6. Do your drive's ScanDisk. ScanDisk is windows utility software that can manage to check the system files and bad cluster on your hard drive. This option can be found from Tools tab from Properties option if you Right Clicked on your drive.

For easy maintenance, you also can use software Tune-Up Utilities. This software have 1-click maintenance for your computer.

Nowadays there are a lot of friendster layout out there that you can find. So me of them free and some of them need to pay for it. I personally use the free one since i cant effort the pay one LOL but yeah, it's still cool.

Becarefull to use premade friendster layout because some of them have a special inner code that will redirect user who view your page to other page like relogin page. This is for stealing the user login and password for friendster. Why is this for, i dont know. Just becarefull and enjoy..

How to make blog load faster

Speed is very important in everything especially in blogging. Do you like to wait 15 minutes to get what you search for? Me myself want to get what i looking for in a speed of flash! You need to apply this to your blog. You must make your blog load faster so your viewer will not wait too long to view your blog.

Have a couple ways to improve your loading of your blog. The first and most important but people less care is about your own post. Well, it's actually not your post but 'your post'. DO NOT include too much pictures in your post since loading picture will increase the waiting time since picture have big size, and big size need big time to load.

The other is about your post too. DO NOT display too much post in front of your blog. You should put maximum 3 post at your first page. Try to imagine, 1 page have 1 picture each and 1 picture have size around 3Mb. 3 pages will give 9Mb to load. Well, that not much, yeah. But what will happen if you put 7 posts at your first page? This will be 21Mb to load exclude your ASCII, your banner, sidebar, header etc. It's your call.

And to get optimum load speed, it's been suggested that you need to use the pre-made widget by the platform that you use.

This is my windows' xp screenshot. I use Desktop Sidebar to make this happen. The Desktop Sidebar is a FREEWARE program. It compatible with Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003.

This freeware have won a couples of award. This sidebar is windows vista look-alike. With the customize sidebar, you can put a lot of gadget which you want like clock, weather, picture slideshow, cpu usage or even the rain calendar. Just get the addon and you will realize it.

The installation is easy, you just need from download from Desktop Sidebar web page and install it. Then you set it to always on desktop.

Hack Rapidshare Download using RS_Bundle

This article is for person who like to download from rapidshare. You need to use Firefox with add-on Greasemonkey for this option.

This time i will talk about RS_Bundle; the userscript Greasemo nkey that is very useful for them who love to download from rapidshare. With this script, you will have some option while downloading from rapidshare. With this script, you can copy the link to paste in your download accelerator (idm, orbit, dap, etc.) which can help u to increase the download speed.

Firstly, you need to have Mozilla Firefox or Flock as your web browser. Then, get the add-on named Greasmonkey. After finished install the addon, you will need to restart your web browser (Firefox or Flock) then go to RS_Bundle Userscript web. On the top right, find the link that wrote : "Install this script".

After you finished installed the script, there will be an extra option for download from rapidshare.

VMware Workstation 6

VMware workstation is a software that enable us to run multiple operating system(os) in 1 windows. As example, you want to run Linux Os in your Windows XP, what you need is the iso file of Linux Os like kanotix. You an get it free from here.

When you have install the VMware, open VMware Workstation 6, click File and choose New and Virtual Machine. Click next until you get the "select a guess opetarig system". Choose Linux and choose "other linux for 2.4.x kernel" for version.

Then, click next untill you reach "network type" and choose "use bridging connection" there. After you clicked next, you need to choose disk space for your virtual machine. Just let the default value (8Gb) and click Finish. At the Linux's tab, you need to set the iso of the operating system that you want to use.

Double click at "CD rom (IDE 1:0)"
Then the box of CD rom (IDE 1:0) will appear
choose "use iso image" and browse the iso of your operating system.
After you click ok, you have done setting your virtual machine. To start running the new OS, you just need to click "start this virtual machine" and push "Ctrl+Alt+Del" to view your virtual machine in fullscreen mode.
Choose your new language for your new OS.
To back to normal window, just "Ctrl+Alt+Del" again.
Now you can run linux on your windows xp. you also can surfing or doing other stuff.
