Mea culpa!



This is the second time in five years that I have gone an extended time without publishing any new content on my blog.



This last drought lasted seven weeks.



I tried three different times to publish a post but felt totally uninspired.



So, I have decided to impose some discipline on myself and set up an editorial calendar.



This means I will have a weekly content theme for most posts, and I hope to announce the content schedule a week in advance.



This remaining posts this week are focused on blog content ideas.

Here's why ‘WHY’ is such a profit-making marketing trigger.



“Stop taking two and three plates of food,” my mother said to me angrily.



I was at a wedding and seven years old. Back then, at a lot of the weddings we used to go to, the food would be pre-served on a plate. I could never get enough of those calorie-ridden platters. Waylaying different waiters, (so I would not be recognised), I’d polish 3-4 plates without blinking an eye.



Mum wasn’t impressed, and told me to stop and desist.



“Why?” I’d ask. Her stock reply was always, “It’s bad manners to do that.” This Dustbin Hoffman (yes, I do mean Dustbin and not Dustin) act obviously got her goat, but it left me unfazed. It must have bugged her more than I expected though, because in a short while Dad was peering down at my food-stuffed face.



My question remained unchanged. “WHY?”



“If you invite a hundred people to a wedding, how many would you cater for?” he asked. “A hundred,” I answered, proud of my analytical genius. “If you ate four plates,” he continued, “how many would remain?” He prompted quickly, “Ninety-six right?” I nodded vigorously. “That means some people don’t eat. If you’re so hungry, we can go out after the wedding and get something to eat, but don’t deprive others.”


Dad Made Sense. Do You?



Dad understood psychology. He had to sell my brain an idea that my rumbling stomach didn’t want to understand. And he did it by answering the question, 'WHY?' How many of us ignore this powerful trigger in our marketing because it seems too obvious, almost too simple?


Why 'Why?' Puts Elvis’ 
Shaking and Moving to Shame



Let’s examine the six honest men. What, How, When, Where, Who and Why. Which one of these is the most powerful psychological movers of them all? This would be better answered with an example.



Let’s assume you needed to go to the supermarket. All the other triggers (how, when, where, who and what) would make absolutely no difference if you didn’t know ‘WHY’ you were headed there. Everything else would be totally irrelevant. Once you know WHY you’re doing something, everything else is just a matter of logistics.


Why Does 90% of Advertising and Marketing Communication Go Down the Drain?



Simple. Look for the WHY in advertising and scarcity pops up instantly. All the fancy layouts and the smart headlines can’t quite compensate for the niggling question that goes unanswered. All your customers want to know is, Why should I choose you? Why should I take this decision? Why should I spend this money? Why should I look at your website? Why should I read your brochure?’ Why should I listen to your speech? ‘Why? Why? Why?’



Dump the cotton woolly fluff. Get your customer’s brain to go scrambling like an over-enthusiastic pup after a Frisbee. Once you have enough WHY factor built into what you’re selling, everything else is just clip, clop, fall in place stuff


Be an Accountant, Do an Audit



Look at your communication. Like reeeeeeeaaaaally look at it! What about your website? Does it answer the question WHY straight up? And does it do it on the first page? How about your brochure? Does its headline make it a cinch for dustbin land? What about your speech? Do you have enough beds to compensate for your lack of WHY?



I could go on, but I suspect you get the message.



Be merciless. If the WHYs don’t stack up, dump the communication. Or chop and change it till it does.


Finding the Right Level of Why Power



If you noticed, Mum actually answered my WHY question. She just didn’t answer it to my satisfaction like Dad did. Herein lies a subtle, yet formidable difference.



It’s not enough to simply have the WHY question answered. It’s got to be the most ‘Rambo in your face’ answer, or it will bounce higher than a defaulting cheque. Let your WHYs loose on each other, and let only the one with the most testosterone come out shining.


Aristotle -- Man, Was he Smart or What?



All communication must lead to change.



That’s what the old wise man said over 2300 years ago. Not some or most communication.



All.



Yet we are dealing with customers that inherently detest change. WHY is the only motivator that allows them to make that shift. Change is still a scary word, but at least the justification sits nicely in their cranium.



In fact, if you look closely, even a WHAT question like, What’s in it for me?, is really a "WHY" issue. All it is saying is ‘Why should I pay attention?’ Give your customers the WHY factor and their buying sprees will reflect nicely in your growing bank account.



This is simple, down to earth advice. Yet it represents one of the most powerful psychological triggers why people buy. WHY on earth would you ignore it?

Let me start out by giving some advice that may seem contradictory regarding your traffic strategy:

Stay focused but diversify!

Its a fact of life that Google dominates search engine traffic.

If you are already successful with search engine traffic, that probably means you are susceptible to the next coming Google algorithm update.

If you are still struggling to get significant search engine traffic, be aware that once successful, much of your traffic could vanish in the blink of an eye (Google Penguin, Panda eye).

So you must diversify your blog or website traffic sources.

If you continue to rely overwhelmingly on Google for free traffic, it must mean you like pain. lol

But at the same time I want you to stay focused and not start chasing every one of the latest, greatest traffic strategies that hit the market almost every day.

Specifically, I mean you should have at least half a dozen meaningful traffic sources other than free search engine traffic.

Stay focused on what works for you and increase your expertise.

Adapt new tools, resources, software, and strategies to your existing focus and rarely pursue something entirely new.

OK. OK!! I confess. The content of this post was provoked by my reading two exact opposite recommendations by SEO authorities about what to do with bad backlinks to your site(s).



First let's deal with info from two SEO gurus Andre Voget and Johannes Selbach.







Believe me I didn't get a good feeling reading their conclusions.



And when I read the three bullet points that followed this statement:

Paranoid Lately??




Its bad enough that Google is tracking our every backlink move.



According to the professional web developer, Wesley Warren, we also have to worry about the negative SEO practice of the link spam attack.



Warren printed an article recently on the Search Engine Journal website.



He detailed the extensive problems he had when one of his major sites was penalized after last year's Penguin update by Google.

What Now?




OK. If you're still with me, how do we resolve this conflicting advice??



No clear cut answer, but one thing is absolutely certain:



Drastically reduce reliance on Google for traffic.  MUST DO!



But my final recommendation is to concentrate on developing quality backlinks from authority sites.

a top 10 list lately?

Quality Content Attracts Backlinks
So Through An Annotated List With

OK. I’ll get right to the point.

We are going to get substantial increases in traffic through the use of annotated lists.

By annotated I mean we are going to expand the lists with critical or explanatory notes.

In plain language we are going to add useful insights or information to the lists.

I suggest you start with a Top 10 list, but you could us a top 25, 50, 100, or whatever number you think is appropriate.

If you are going to publish this list on your blog/website, then the list should probably concern the thematic focus of your blog/website.

Your list could consist of:

Best blogs

Best articles

Best resources

Best techniques

Etc., etc.

Ideally, the items on your list should be found online so that you can link to them.

Most of the time once you have compiled your list you will find that the items come from well established blogs or websites with substantial traffic.

Once you publish your list you should notify the authority behind the list item of their inclusion on the list.

Often, but not always, you will find that the authority will link back to your list.

This backlink should have SEO benefits as well as provide you with increased traffic.

Here's A Very Simple Effective

Technique To Increase The Length

Of Time Visitors Stay On Your Blog





I currently have approximately 800 posts on this blog and most are in 5 main categories.



I have started to create sub-categories that narrowly focus around a single resource or technique.



These sub-categories are visible in my category menu in the right column, and also indicate the number of posts.



This strategy combined with listing "Related Posts" at the bottom of every post means that the average visitor is staying on my site over ten minutes.



The fact that you have multiple quality posts around a singular subject will increase your authority status in the Internet community.



Especially, in these days of social sharing and bookmarking.



There is no magic number of posts to have before you start establishing sub-categories, but I think at least 5 posts about any limited theme is a good place to start.



With WordPress you can sort all your posts by category in the administrative panel, and I am still going through some categories to find worthwhile sub-categories to set up.



By the way, with this approach you will find some posts that fit in a sub-category, but that are currently in two different main categories.

There is an endless supply of quality content on the Internet, and I am constantly bookmarking great sites and posts.



When I started bookmarking, I did not use folders, and the huge volume of bookmarks became an unmanageable massive list.



In addition, I did not pay attention to the headline, and often found the default headline not revealing.



So, I at least cured that by inserting a more informative headline that told me more precisely what the bookmark was about.



Then, I set up a folder, Blog Post Ideas, but that too got overloaded.



Here is my latest strategy:



When you login to your WordPress blog, there is a "Tools" category in the left menu.



Click on it and you will see a "Press This" resource, which is a bookmarklet, a little app that runs in your browser and lets you grab bits of the web.



To put in place you'll see this directive:
 

"Drag-and-drop the following link to your bookmarks bar or right click it and add it to your favorites for a posting shortcut."



Once the "Press It" tool is in place in your bookmark tool bar here is how convenient it is.



You encounter some great info on another blog. You highlight it just like you intend to copy and paste.



You then click on Press This from your tool bar. What happens then is amazing.



A small window opens up that logs in to your WordPress blog

The window shows the screen of a "new post".

The content area is filled in with the info you highlighted and wanted to save.

You can indicate what category the info belongs in and add any tags

You can edit or click Save Draft and come back later.


All the info is saved just like an ordinary draft you set up yourself.



By the way, you can also save any image or video with this tool.



Time elapsed? Less than 1 minute!
