Many computers are purchased with windows already installed. As we all know windows is for rich n00bs. This tutorial explains how to burn a .iso image to a cd using Windows XP (or Vista) and free software.

There are a number of reasons you'll want a free cd writing program that will burn an iso. The most common reason would be to burn a Linux disc so you can escape the clutches of Microsoft.

Windows XP & Vista

This is a pretty straight forward article, all you need to do is download and install the free software. The following software will burn isos: ISO Recorder V2

Have you ever watched a movie, commercial or web video and hear a song you really like?
Did you miss your favorite TV show and now want to download it?
This tutorial explains how you would go about finding what your looking for.

Torrent sites make finding torrent files really easy, but what if you don't know what your looking for? Here are some tips on how to find certain things

Finding a Song

Quite often I hear a song but don't know what its called. When I want to find what this song is called I go to A-Z Lyrics Universe. A-Z Lyrics Universe allows you to search the lyrics of songs.

Finding A Television Episode

Did you miss your favourite TV show? Go to epguides.com they list almost all TV shows ever made and include the following information:

Show Descriptions

Seasons

Episode numbers (both by season and all time)

Television Air Date

You can then use this information to search for the episode you missed.

Using RSS Feeds

RSS Feeds and Torrents are often used together in modern torrent sites. This article explains how RSS can help save you time when downloading files soon after their release.

RSS Feed Definition

RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication.

Wikipedia defines an RSS feed as:

RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a "feed," "web feed," or "channel," contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favourite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually.

How are RSS Feeds and Bit Torrent Related

Most Bit Torrent sites have started publishing RSS feeds of new torrents posted to their site. Feeds are usually broken up into categories, which allow you to only receive notice only of the category your interested in. Some of the bigger sites include the actual .torrent file with the feed allowing automation of torrent downloads.

BitTorrent Clients with RSS Support

Here is a list of Torrent clients which currently include RSS support, if you are aware of any others leave a comment and I'll add them to the list.

Azureus

Bitcomet

uTorrent

If you prefer to use a torrent client that does not support RSS here are a list of some alternative RSS readers:

Mozilla Thunderbird - Windows, Linux

Akregator - Linux

Feed Bucket - web based

Installing uTorrent on Mac OSX

This article explains how to get uTorrent working on Mac OSX. I don't have a Mac myself, but if you find something is a miss send me a note.

uTorrent is currently only available for Windows. But we are going to mod it to work on OSX.

Parallels

There are two strategies of doing this. The most obvious strategy, would be to install Parallels and run uTorrent as if it were any other Windows program.

CrossOver

The second strategy is to use CrossOver. CrossOver is in beta, but is already a very usable and stable alternative to installing a copy of the entire Windows operating system on your Mac, which is almost what you are doing when you run Parallels.

WARNING: CrossOver only works on Macs that have an Intel chip therefore you don't want try this on a PPC.

Step 1: Download & Install

Download CrossOver Beta (it is available for free on the developer's site.) Once you have installed CrossOver Beta, most popular Microsoft programs will now run within OS X. uTorrent is one these programs.

Step 2: Download & Start uTorrent

Next, you need a copy of uTorrent. After downloading the Windows executable (utorrent.exe), double-click it and CrossOver should start bouncing in the dock with the little .exe symbol displayed. After a few seconds uTorrent should load.

Step 3: Usage

The file structure that you see while trying to download a torrent is a tad confusing. CrossOver tricks programs into believing that there is a C: drive on your Mac, when there is not.

Do not save your files in the C: drive. You can get to your user folder by choosing:

Desktop > / > Users > Yourusername

Another annoyance is the fact that you can't untick files you don't want to download. You have to right-click on the file and choose select or deselect.

What is the Bit Torrent Network

This article answers the following questions:

What is the Bit Torrent Network?

How did the Torrent Network begin?

What are Torrents files?

Definitions of Bit Torrent

Bit Torrent Inc gives the following description:

BitTorrent is a peer-assisted, digital content delivery platform that provides the fastest, most efficient means of distributing, discovering, and consuming large, high-quality files on the Web. Our mission is simple: to deliver the content that entertains and informs the digital world.

Wikipedia defines the Bit Torrent as the following:

BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer (P2P) file distribution protocol, and a free software implementation of that protocol. The protocol was originally designed and created by programmer Bram Cohen, and is now maintained by BitTorrent, Inc. BitTorrent is designed to distribute large amounts of data widely without incurring the corresponding consumption in costly server and bandwidth resources.

Users browse the web to find a torrent file of interest, download it and open it with a BitTorrent client program. The client connects to the tracker specified in the torrent file, which sends it a list of other peers currently downloading pieces of the file to be downloaded. The client connects to those peers to obtain the various pieces. Such a group of peers connected to each other to share a torrent is called a swarm. If the swarm contains only the initial seeder, the client connects directly to it and begins to request pieces. As peers enter the swarm, they begin to trade pieces with one another, instead of downloading directly from the seeder.

Clients incorporate mechanisms to optimize their download and upload rates; for example they download pieces in a random order, to increase the opportunity to exchange data, which is only possible if two peers have a different pieces of the file.
The effectiveness of this data exchange depends largely on the policies that clients use to determine to whom to send data. Clients may prefer to send data to peers that send data back to them (a tit for tat scheme), which encourages fair trading. But strict policies often result in suboptimal situations, where newly joined peers are unable to receive any data (because they don't have any pieces yet to trade themselves) and two peers with a good connection between them do not exchange data simply because neither of them wants to take the initiative. To counter these effects, the official BitTorrent client program uses a mechanism called “optimistic unchoking, where the client reserves a portion of its available bandwidth for sending pieces to random peers (not necessarily known-good partners, so called preferred peers), in hopes of discovering even better partners and to ensure that newcomers get a chance to join the swarm.
