Shy-Anne Hovorka is no exception as she was just nominated for the upcoming 2008 Aboriginal Music Awards for best new artist, best songwriter, and single of the year!

by Shawn Katuwapitiya

My second night at Indie Week was a definite change-of-pace from the acoustic showcase at the Free Times Cafe. At the Rok Boutique, delicious apple crisps were replaced by stripper poles, the warm waitresses were replaced by bartenders with an emphasis on cleavage, and most of all, the acoustic guitars were smashed in favour of some much needed electric-guitar-driven-rock. However, amongst all the differences were also some similarities to the free times cafe, namely the fact that the best band didn't win and the night itself was a mixed bag in terms of talent. Here's a recap:

by Kim Snyder

There was no Relaxo at Rancho Friday night …

Rancho Relaxo is an offbeat, Mexican restaurant and lounge on College Street that definitely served up some offbeat and tremendous talent on Friday night of Indie Week.

Iguanadonho was first to grab our attention, and to my surprise the second time I saw him on stage for Indie Week. Ah Marky Ray, you are still as entertaining as you were last year, but you were the same. His Hello Kitty guitar was as shiny as ever as he thumped away and sang, quite well, into the microphone. He told some of the same stories as last year; actually, not as many stories, which was one of the highlights of his set last October. He is known as THE Original Rock and Roll Mercenary, in the industry for over 30 years, traveled the world and worked with big names, including Nine inch Nails and the Jim Rose Circus. Marky Ray has a day job in Cleveland as a music teacher, and I think just loves the world of music so much that he doesn’t want out. So, he continues to play, entertain and tell stories as a way of life, both night and day.

It was a great start to a great night, the first night of competition at Indie Week 2008. The night was billed as an acoustic showcase, but the range of artists scheduled to play definitely ranged in genre. The line-up for the night: Cindy Davis, Adam Crossley, Larry Bagby, Darelle London and David Martinez. Each of them were crammed on a tiny stage that couldn't have been more than the size of a large coffee table, but they all entertained the packed room. Let me talk about each specifically:

Cindy Davis, a girl with a cute look who came all the way from Vancouver, started the night off on a high note. Her sweet lyrics and vocal control were accompanied by solid cello work and piano. Her music has a definite Chantal Kreviazuk vibe and that's not a bad thing. Where she could improve, however, is in the diversity of her music. "Clumsy", one of her newer singles, stood out as a highlight early on in her set, however the reliance on by-the-numbers song structure soon became apparent. The number of crescendos into emotional bridges, the similar tempos and rhyme schemes, all seemed to detract from someone who is obviously a talented vocalist. Hopefully with more time, she can find that range and more of what works best for her. Solid effort though.

review by Tammy “DJ Roxy” Hillier

I had the lovely privilege of attending one of the most amazing acoustic shows that I have ever seen. It was an intimate gathering of friends, family, fans, and of course, there was great music. Paul Price and John Moore are 2 talented singer/songwriters who are preparing to head out on a co-headlining acoustic tour. In preparation for the tour, the pair hosted a soiree at John’s Loft.

Saturday September 6 – Toronto Island Park

review by Melissa Girimonte

My very first VFest began on Saturday morning, with the media briefing at a waterfront hotel, complete with an appearance by the man behind the Virgin brand, Sir Richard Branson. It was then off to the Toronto Islands, and a tour of the festival site before the gates opened. At that point, it was cloudy and cool as we checked out all the stages, and were treated to a sneak peak of Let’s Go to War’s set later that day in the Bacardi B Live Tent – accompanied by The Mustangs Marching Band!

by Priya Panda

I found music amidst the madness during Toronto's Nuit Blanche 2008 - a dusk 'til dawn art fest that drew over a million people. New York's Garage-Glam band Semi Precious Weapons spoke to me about their new album "We Love You," Kate Moss' grabby hands and life on the rocky road.

OPOPO (Oh Henry! Stage)

This Toronto trio has been steadily gaining momentum over the past year by playing selective live dates, including a showcase at NXNE, a DJ spot at the Rogers Picnic and some raucous European shows. If their set at Virgin Festival was any indication, these boys absolutely love being on stage and performing. Huge smiles were plastered on their faces and “OMG we’re playing V-Fest” eye contact with one another was refreshing to say the least.

by Priya Panda

If you don’t already know who Katy Perry is, ask your mom. She’s probably been singing the run away smash hit “I Kissed a Girl” that has both injected sass into the youth of America and thoroughly pissed off the Neo-Cons and religious groups that have a stranglehold on the so-called “land of the free.” My kind of girl!

The Midway State (TD Music Stage)

If there wasn’t a tear in the eye of every person in the audience watching The Midway State’s 2:35 set on Saturday, then lead singer and piano player Nathan Ferraro (who reminds me way too much of Josh Groban) wasn’t doing his job. The theatrical, melodramatic songs would definitely get any mom’s seal of approva,l and the mainly underage crowd were bopping along the best they could to the adult contemporary style tunes.

The Drake Hotel – March 27, 2008

review by Annie Cook

What I knew about Classic Indie Albums Live when I arrived at The Drake was this – In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is the stuff of indie rock legend, and one of my personal favourite discs. When asked why she chose ITAOTS for the inaugural edition of Classic Indie Albums Live, event co-ordinator Lauren Schrieber cited this precise reason: it is an album that countless music geeks (myself included) have a relationship with (incidentally, this year also marks the disc’s tenth anniversary). It was therefore the logical choice to kick-off what will hopefully be a recurring series, based on the Classic Albums Live model.

I awoke late Sunday morning; it was raining, so I went back to sleep. By early Sunday afternoon there were signs of clearing overheard. Come 3 pm and I found myself on a streetcar bound for Fort York. There was no going back.

Their originals were akin to Black Flag, Dropkick Murphys (without bagpipes), and DOA. They were a great band to down an early pint with.
