Formula One World Driving Championship:

LAST GP: Saturday Nov. 18th: The brand new Las Vegas Grand Prix, the “Trip Down the Strip!”  This was a good one!

Max Verstappen wins yet again, no surprise even after two safety cars, and a 5 second penalty for a controversial squeeze and pass of pole-sitter Charles Leclerc off the start. Max then passed both his teammate Sergio Perez and Leclerc for a second time to score the win, his 18th from 21 races, another new record, plus a record-breaker for Red Bull, who have surpassed Mercedes’ previous tally of 19 wins in a season.

Perez had to settle with the final spot on the podium after losing a place on the last lap for the second time in two races. However, the result secures Perez second place in the championship to give Red Bull their first-ever 1-2 driver finish. Leclerc hung in for 2nd, sandwiched on the podium between Max and Checo. McLaren’s Lando Norris had a huge wall-whack in turn 12 on lap 4. Got out of the car on his own. Checked out at hospital-released! He’s OK.

Canada’s Lance Stroll at Vegas: 5th again, much better and back to back with his 5th in Brazil!

ET: F-1 Points: into the season-capper on the 26th the Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi: the fight for 2nd place under champion Max Verstappen is done! Sergio Perez locks down the runner-up position. Mercedes’ lead over Ferrari in Constructors is only 4 points! That needs to be decided.

Next GP: Sunday November 26th: The 2023 season-closer, The Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi.

Formula One World Driving Championship:

Last GP: The U.S Grand Prix at COTA, Texas: Max Verstappen started 6th on the grid, but by lap 40 of 56, he took over the lead and was able to shake off balky brakes to secure his 15th win of the season, the 50th of his career. Lewis Hamilton and Charles LeClerc were disqualified for excessive floor skid-block wear. The purpose of this ‘skid block’ is to ensure that all cars are following ride height regulations. If the wooden plank has been worn down by more than a millimeter at the end of a race, that car is DQ’d. So the new finish: Verstappen, Norris, Sainz, Perez and Russell. NTT IndyCar Series: (idle)

Last Race: 2023 Season Finale at Laguna Seca, California on Sunday September 10th:

In a word: messy… and at times, embarrassing, with winless guys in the back doing dumb things, perhaps in frustration! Lots of contact, lots of spins, and lots of un-safe track re-entries all over the place causing far too many yellows. Recovering from Lap 1 contact and a penalty, “The Iceman” Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon notches his 3rd win over his last 4 starts! Scott McLaughlin finished 2nd, with 2023 champ Alex Palou 3rd! Canada’s Devlin DeFrancesco fell to 21st with gearbox problems in his final drive for Andretti Global.

Alex Palou clinched his 2nd series championship the race previous at Portland. It marks the 15th IndyCar title for Chip Ganassi.

Final IndyCar Points: Alex Palou finished with 78 more points than team mate Scott Dixon. Canada’s Devlin DeFrancesco wrapped up in 22nd.

Formula One World Driving Championship:

Last Race: The Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Sunday September 3rd:

On one of F1’s grand ol’ circuits, Max Verstappen cruised to a record-breaking 10th straight win, taking the lead from homeland hero and pole-sitter Carlos Sainz on lap 15. Sainz made the Tifosi happy, securing a spot on the podium in 3rd. Bad one for Mercedes! Russell and Hamilton 5th and 6th, both serving 5-second penalties for passing Esteban Ocon off-track and a collision with Oscar Piastri late in the race respectively. Lewis and George both signed 2-year contract extensions with Mercedes earlier in the weekend. Canada’s Lance Stroll started at the back of the pack at Monza, finishing 16th and out of the points.

Larson automatically advances to the next Round of 8. Tyler Reddick wound up 2nd at Darlington, with Chris Buescher rounding out the podium in 3rd.

Felix Rosenqvist wound up 2nd at Portand, with Scott Dixon finishing up in 3rd. Formula One World Driving Championship: Back from Summer Break!

Last Grand Prix: The Dutch Grand Prix, Zandvoort, on Sunday August 27th:

Max Verstappen equaled Sebastian Vettel’s record of nine wins in a row in a rain-soaked, red-flagged affair! Max survived two separate down-pours of rain that caused chaos at the start and finish to take his 11th win in 13 starts to thrill his raucous home crowd with career win 46! After a 40 minute delay to finish the last 7 laps, Fernando Alonso claimed 2nd in his upgraded Aston Martin, ahead of Pierre Gasly, who completed the podium for Alpine. Sergio Perez threw away 2nd, sliding off the course just before the red flag rain stoppage, while also receiving a 5-second penalty for speeding in the pits that dropped him to 4th. Carlos Sainz wound up 5th in Holland with Lewis Hamilton behind in 6th. Canada’s Lance Stroll finished up in 11th, spending most of his race near the back once the rain arrived.

Standings: Max Verstappen tops teammate Sergio Perez by 138 in the Driver’s Championship. Red Bull has theoretically already won the 2023 Constructor’s Crown, leading Mercedes by 285 points with only 8 GP’s to go.

Next Race: The Italian Grand Prix at Monza on Sunday September 3rd. Last year’s winner: Max Verstappen.

_____________________________________________________________________________

NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series:

Last Race: Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway, Florida, on Saturday August 26th:

Chris Buescher stayed hot to secure his third win in five weeks to make the post season! Buescher got a push from teammate and car owner Brad Keselowski to stay out front. His win also locked Bubba Wallace into the playoffs. The overtime finish was set up by a nasty crash where Ryan Preece flipped nearly a dozen times, reminiscent of some of Rusty Wallace’s airborne shunts back in the 1990’s. Preece was checked out in hospital, sustaining only minor injuries. Former champ Chase Elliott, who missed races earlier with injuries, did not make the cut after finishing the race 4th. The Cup playoff opening Round of 16 rolls out on September 3rd with the Southern 500 at Darlington.

Playoff Drivers: Buescher, Harvick, Keselowski, Byron, Truex Jr., Kyle Busch, Hamlin, Larson, Bell, Chastain, Blaney, Logano, McDowell, Reddick, Stenhouse Jr., and Wallace.

Points: Martin Truex Jr. wins regular season championship.

Next Race: Darlington, South Carolina on Sunday September 3rd.

Dixie took the St. Loo lead back with 39 to go for good after pit stop cycling. Pato O’Ward finished 2nd with Dave Malukas 3rd. Alex Palou wound up 7th. Canada’s Devlin DeFrancesco back in 19th.

Standings: Heading into the second-last race of the season, Ganassi Racing Spaniard Alex Palou holds a 74-point lead over Scott Dixon.

Next Race: The Grand Prix of Portland, Oregon on Sunday September 3rd. Last Year’s winner: Scott McLaughlin.

NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series:

Last Race: Watkins Glen Road Course, New York, on Sunday August 20th:

Some decent door-to-door stuff in this one! Hendrick Motorsports pilot William Byron takes his 5th win of the season. In firm control, Byron led all but 24 of the 90 laps to nail his first career road course win. That’s 5 wins in a row for Rick Hendrick’s employees at Watkins Glen. Denny Hamlin finished 2nd, with Christopher Bell rounding out the podium in 3rd.

Next Race: Daytona International Speedway, Florida, on Saturday August 26th. This marks the final race of the regular season. The Round of 16 Playoff starts Sunday September 3rd at Darlington.

Formula One World Driving Championship: Summer Break

Last Grand Prix: The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday July 30th:

In the final dash before the summer shutdown, Max Verstappen had to fight for this one (for a little while, at least). Max caught and passed Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez on Lap 17 to pull off another impressive win, this time starting back in 6th on the starting grid after receiving a 5-place grid penalty for a new gearbox. That’s now 8 straight wins for Verstappen, and 12 wins in a row for RB (13 if you count last year’s season-closer at Abu Dhabi). Red Bull remains undefeated this campaign! Perez finished Belgium 2nd to complete the Red Bull 1-2. Charles LeClerc wound up in 3rd, notching a podium for Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton finished 4th with complaints that his Mercedes was porpoising again! Fernando Alonso in 5th for Aston Martin, with Canadian teammate Lance Stroll back in 9th.

Standings: Heading into The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on August 27th, Max Verstappen’s leads the Driver’s Championship over Red Bull team mate Sergio Perez by a wide margin of 125! In the Constructors, Red Bull once again added to their huge advantage over 2nd place Mercedes, stretching the gap to 256!

Next Grand Prix: The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on Sunday August 27th. Last year’s winner: Max Verstappen.

_____________________________________________________________________________

NTT IndyCar Series:

Last Race: The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, Saturday August 12th:

Spectacular first lap! Canada’s Devlin DeFrancesco went 4-wide in turn-one, bullying past pole sitter Graham Rahal to lead for just the second time in these cars! Dev was working from a career-best 5th starting spot, but wound up 19th to finish. But even after a crash and spin on the opening lap, Ganassi’s Scott Dixon held back a furious charge from Graham Rahal at the end for his first win of the season in his 319th consecutive start. It marked his 54th career win, 2nd only to A.J Foyt’s 67. That’s now 19-straight winning seasons for Dixon. Graham Rahal finished the race 2nd, Pato O’Ward 3rd.

Standings: Alex Palou, 7th in the race, widens his championship lead to 101 over Dixon, who skips back over Newgarden for 2nd. Joe got collected in that opening lap mess, winding up 25th with damage. There are only 3 races left on the IndyCar schedule!

Next Race: Sunday August 27th: World Wide Technology Raceway, Gateway St. Louis. Last year’s winner: Josef Newgarden.
