Yesterday I had the chance to see Kraftwerk, on of my all-time favorite bands, in Berlin. They’re currently performing their 3D shows “The catalogue: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8”, each representing one album, at the Neue Nationalgalerie, a modern art museum. As you might know, that building was designed by Mies van der Rohe and is a true classic. It’s fair to say that seeing Kraftwerk playing in the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, is a one time opportunity, especially as the building will be closed for renovations for the next five years.
Yesterday was concert #2: Radio-Activity (1975), not their best album in my humble opinion. The 3D visuals made the first 30 minutes fly by quickly, so that Kraftwerk could play their greatest hits for the next hour and a half: Autobahn, Spacelab, Das Model, Die Mensch-Maschine, Tour de France, Die Roboter, Boing Boom Tschak …
I don’t know if it was a concert or an art performance, it was for sure something I’ll remember for a long time. If Kraftwerk ever plays in your city, get tickets!

Disclaimer. I was invited by Volkswagen, a partner of the Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, who supports the concerts.

A few weeks ago, I discovered Knyttan, a knit-on-demand start-up in London. They offer sweaters, scarves and blanket scarves in a whole range of colors, made from Merino wool. But the cool thing about it, is that you can design them yourself starting from a many different patterns. Some of the them were designed by Nicolas Sassoon, studio Moniker and Studio Moross.
It’s no surprise that I had to design one myself, so here’s my scarf. I love it! When I ever make to London, I’ll definitely get a sweater too.

This was the design that I sent to the “factory”.

The scarf is really comfy, the label adds a nice touch to it.

Here you can see the design versus the knitted result. Somehow it got mirrored during production, I guess you wouldn’t want that when you’re designing a sweater.

He placed several massive pieces of ice that broke off from Iceland’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull, in a big room that was cooled down below 0°. The oldest ice in the glacier is estimated to have originated some 800 years ago. Of course the power needed to do this, comes from solar panels that were installed especially on the roof of the MoMA PS1.
You can experience this sculpture at the MoMA PS1 in NYC till September 2nd.

It’s really a magical experience. You can visit the Rain Room at the MoMA in NYC till July 28th.

Last Friday I was invited by Volkswagen to attend to pre-opening of the exhibition EXPO 1: New York in New York City. Actually the full description of the exhibition is: “EXPO 1: New York, an exploration of ecological challenges in the context of the economic and socio-political instability of the early 21st century”. It takes place at 3 locations: the MoMA PS1, The Museum of Modern Art, and Rockaway Beach.

Acting in the guise of a festival-as-institution, EXPO 1: New York imagines a contemporary art museum dedicated to ecological concerns, presenting a simultaneity of modules, interventions, solo projects, and group exhibitions including a school, a colony, a cinema, a geodesic dome, Rain Room, and more. EXPO 1: New York is made possible by a partnership with Volkswagen Group of America. Rain Room is on view at MoMA, courtesy of RH, Restoration Hardware.

The concept of EXPO 1: New York was developed by MoMA PS1 Director and MoMA Chief Curator-at-Large Klaus Biesenbach with Hans Ulrich Obrist and an advisory group including Peter Eleey, Paola Antonelli, Pedro Gadanho, Laura Hoptman, Roxana Marcoci, and Jenny Schlenzka.

At the MoMA PS1 it occupies the entire building with large-scale exhibitions and solo projects exploring the theme of dark optimism.
In my opinion the exhibitions at MoMA PS1 were a little to chaotic, a little too much. But there were definitely some highlights like the module ProBio which explored the theme of dark optimism within the context of the human body and technology. Or the sculpture “Your Waste of Time” by Olafur Eliasson and several other single artworks like “La inocencia de los animales” by Adrián Villar Rojas.
The Rain Room at the MoMA is definitely worth visiting, but I’m not sure if it is MoMA-level piece of work.

Volkswagen Group of America is a partner of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and MoMA PS1.

On Saturday I visited Rockaway Beach, which was very badly hit by hurricane Sandy last year. On March 29th they opened the VW Dome 2 right a the beach with a call for ideas to create a sustainable waterfront. 25 projects were selected and you will be able to see them there until June 30th.
