Knifed for snubbing suitor’s love

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — A scorned man attacked his ex-girlfriend with a knife after she rejected his love in an incident in Taman Samudera, Batu Caves, today.

In the 11am incident, the suspect, in his 30s, had visited the 27-year-old woman at her apartment in an attempt to coax her to accept him.

However, when the victim refused to reconcile, the suspect became angry and attacked her in the bedroom before fleeing, leaving the victim in pain.

MCA hit by SMS miscommunication ploy

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — MCA Information and Communication (Infocom) Bureau chief Senator Heng Seai Kie has condemned imposters masquerading as MCA Infocom members and sending out SMS’s in the name of MCA InfoCom.

She said these pretenders sending SMS urging all central delegates to attend the illegal extraordinary general meeting on Nov 28 and was aimed at inciting chaos and confusion “in order to attain their own political agenda”.

“MCA Infocom will never use its name by sending such messages which can jeopardise the party’s image,” said the deputy information communication and culture minister in a statement here today.

IEM: Release results of landslide probes

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) today proposed that findings of investigations into several landslides over the years be made public.

It said in a statement that doing so would prevent speculation on the probable causes of the landslides and enable immediate action to be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

Malaysia had experienced several landslides over the years, especially during a period of prolonged rainfall.

Police deny ‘shoot-to-kill’ accusation

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — Police have categorically denied that they engage in “shoot-to-kill” practices, with Criminal Investigation Department Director Datuk Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin saying in all cases where criminals have been gunned down, the police were fired upon first.

“When police officers shoot, they do not shoot to kill, but rather they shoot to stop the deadly force threat.

“It is clearly within the right of the police to act in self-defence and protect the lives of innocent bystanders,” he said in a statement.

Umno’s Norza gets restraining order to block MACC’s alleged witness tampering

TEMERLOH, Nov 10 — Former Kuala Lumpur-Federal Territory Umno Youth head Datuk Mohamad Norza Zakaria has obtained an order from the Sessions Court here restraining the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) from harassing and contacting the second witness in his corruption case.

Judge Azuar Che Yusof issued the order following an application by Mohamad Norza’s counsel, Datuk Seri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, who told the court that the witness, Mohd Taupik Hussain, claimed that he was harshly treated by MACC officers when he gave statement on the case.

Muhammad Shafee said Mohd Taupik, who is also Wangsa Maju Umno Youth chief, was beaten and ridiculed by MACC officers to make him (Mohd Taupik) confessed to them that he was at a meeting with Halimi Kamaruzzaman, who is the second accused, at Mont Kiara at 8pm on Jan 19 this year.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — After recently asking Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat to resign for not performing, Umno’s Sri Gading MP Datuk Mohamad Aziz is now demanding the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigate the minister’s role in the double-tracking project.

Mohamad (picture) claimed that the railway board did not authorise the purchase of “out of commission” diesel trains for the project but Ong had used his “minister’s power” to approve the purchase.

“I want the minister to answer. He hardly shows up. Is he busy with his personal work or busy with his responsibilities?

MACC had prepared prostitutes for targets, declares counsel

IPOH, Nov 10 ? A defence counsel in the corruption trial involving two former PKR state executive councillors pointed out today that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), a government agency, had prepared “perempuan jalang” (prostitutes) to trap their targets.

The counsel, Surjan Singh, infused this observation into his cross-examination of the MACC’s agent provocateur who was hired in the case.

His reference to the prostitutes, three Chinese nationals, as “perempuan jalang” caused mirth in the courtroom amongst his colleagues, the MACC prosecution team and even Sessions Judge Azhaniz Teh Azman Teh himself.

Anwar says Zulkifli-Sivarasa spat over

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — Without getting into details, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (picture) has declared an end to a policy spat between PKR MP Zulkifli Noordin's and party vice president Sivarasa Rasiah hours after it happened.

In an effort to contain the damage that could split the party, Anwar admitted that the controversial Kulim MP had the right to explain himself but should not have objected with a challenge.

“When Sivarasa’s statement mentioned Zulkifli, he used his right to respond even though I felt that he should not have not challenged Sivarasa. He should have just explained. This matter has been explained and it has ended here,” Anwar told reporters in Parliament House.

Selangor MB wants Grants panel to share tax money among states

SHAH ALAM, Nov 10 — An independent Grants Commission, similar to those in Canada or Australia, is being proposed by Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim to ensure a fair distribution of tax payers’ money to all states including those held by Pakatan Rakyat (PR).

The Selangor mentri besar today lamented the distribution of funds by the Federal Government is made on the basis of political affiliation, rather than development needs, population numbers and poverty.

“As we head to a more mature democracy and a two party system in the Federal context, it would be ideal for an independent Grants Commission to be set up,” Khalid said at the state assembly.

Shah Alam MP admits mistake but does not apologise for oath slip-up

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad (picture) today admitted he was mistaken for his controversial statement that PAS candidates must pledge a loyalty oath or bai’ah to divorce their wives if they leave the party.

The Shah Alam MP made the clarification after women’s organisations and the media criticised him for his earlier statement. PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has denied there is such a pledge.

“This is between me and God and I should not have shared it with other people,” Khalid told a press conference in parliament.
