I'm such a sucker for a good makeover AND good organization!

When I saw Shelley's amazing pantry makeover it was instantly love at first sight!

I read EVERY single word, just soaking it all in. You see, not only did Shelley do a beautiful transformation with her pantry, but she shares almost EVERY last detail of what she did, how she did it, where she got it and how she uses it!!

She used this small tin, from IKEA for about $2.00... to hold all of her spice packets.

{Love this tip}

*Keep things you use OFTEN at eye level, for easy use!

Shelley says the things you use EVERYDAY should be easy to access.

Try to label things and make sure that it all makes sense.

If you have noodles in one area... then your sauce should be it's sidekick! :)

She suggests that you keep heavy, less used, clutter prone items down low.
Aren't these boxes GREAT?! ♥

Things like her large bottle of oil, vinegars, soy sauce, season salt... and such are stored low, and hidden.

Bridget {Bake at 350} comes to St. Louis!

*WARNING......this post is long!*

For all two of you who ~~live under a rock~~ don't know who Bridget is, she writes a fantastic baking blog called Bake at 350 and recently started up a video tutorial site called University of Cookie. She's a wonderful mom and wife and one wicked cookie decorator!!........and she is just as fabulous as I had imagined her being!

We finally got to meet in person!! Can you believe it? After more than a year and a half of emailing, tweeting, texting and phone calls, Bridget and I finally got to meet when she came to visit with me last Thursday and Friday.

I will admit, I felt like a stalker when I spotted a cute curly red haired girl in the air port and jumped up and hugged her.

We chatted, we laughed, we shopped, it was like we've been friends since childhood. Bridget was even MORE fabulous than I had imagined! We just clicked.....at least I think we did......I sure hope Bridget feels the same way ;-)

We spent SO much time enjoying each other's company, we did not take many pictures.

It was HOT here in St. Louis. The temps were in the upper 90's with heat index over 100. Luckily Bridget is used to that kind of summer heat in Houston.

Thursday after we left the airport we headed to Forest Park, it was WAY to hot to visit the zoo, but we had a wonderful lunch at The Boat House and made a quick stop at the Jewel Box on our way out.

Thursday evening we spent at my house eating my Three Cheese Baked Mostaccioli with my crazy family. (I was trying to fatten her up while she was here because it quickly became obvious WHO eats more cookies!)

Seriously, I'm surprised that evening she didn't ask me to just take her back to the air port! My family felt so comfortable with her, they held nothing back!

I eventually took her back to her hotel room so she could get some peace! lol

Our blogging/twitter buddy, Ann Marie downloaded the flat friend files Cathe Holden made and sent a flat version of herself so she could join in on the fun!!

Ann Marie stayed with Bridget in the hotel, where she drank all of the coffee and enjoyed antiquing with us!

Back in May, you may remember, I was nominated over at i am mommy for "Best Overall Blog" and I won!! As a prize, Amanda sent me $50 cash!

Well, I promised to spend a day using the $50 to perform Random Acts of Kindness and thought it would be fun to do with Bridget!

Friday we spent part of our afternoon paying for people's groceries and lunch. It was fun and felt good! People were genuinely surprised, shocked, even embarrassed, but very grateful!!

When I paid for lunch for the ladies pictured below, one lady asked "Has the heat gone to your head?" We laughed and laughed......they even came over and gave us a big hug after they got their food.

My husband was SO excited that Bridget wanted to see his cats!! He volunteers at a wildlife center where he handles their tigers. Bridget quickly made friends with Leo the 700 pound African Lion!! She also got to feed chicken to the tigers. (we got that on video, but have not had time to work on that yet)

We did not have time to bake together, but Bridget made me some BEAUTIFUL cookies. You should read her tip about how she colored the sanding sugar, and made business connections on her flight while editing her pictures!

and of course, I made cupcakes for her. Unfortunately cupcakes don't travel well, so I couldn't send any home with her.

2 wonderful days flew by in no time!! I'm REALLY hoping to talk the Bug Man aka Mr. TidyMom or TidyDad on a trip to Houston some time!!

This picture was taken by the hostess at The Boat House after our lunch on Thursday. Can you believe how we color coordinated that day! lol....we did NOT plan that! I don't wear much purple, but I happened to wear that shirt that day, and look how perfectly it matched the purple Bridget had on!

I LOVED getting to know Bridget better and highly recommend it to any blogger who has made that "connection" with another blogger.

"My name is Crystal and I'm a SAH mom to 4 great kiddos. I've had a passion for photography for as long as I can remember and spend much of my free time (although I don't have much) taking pictures, reading, creating digital artwork, cooking, and trying to learn to sew! I love reading craft, sewing, and cooking blogs, although I haven't found the time to make one for myself!

I started playing with digital artwork a couple of years ago and have a true love for creating new pieces of art. My shop, Sew Saucy Stitches has been around since December of 2009 and growing every day. I love working on custom projects!

I enjoy creating art that has real meaning to me (ex. "I Love You, A Bushel And A Peck", was a song I sang to all my kids when they were younger, and continue to sing it today, although my teens get quite annoyed with it!) Many of my prints are actual words of wisdom or encouragement that I give my kids and then they become artwork at some point! "Expect to get what you give" and "dare to be different" started as just a mom giving advice!

Hope this gives you a little insight into my world...which very much revolves around my children and my love for art and all things handmade! "

Chicago Trip!

My girls and I returned from our trip to Chicago for Sunshine's 14th birthday a little over a week ago. We had way too much fun. We had been looking forward to this trip for quite a while and I can't believe that it has already come and gone.

We took the train.

It was our first time on an Amtrak train and we actually enjoyed the 5.5 hour ride from St. Louis.

The train station in St. Louis was VERY tiny, but Union Station in Chicago was huge and beautiful!! One thing that surprised me.....nothing, no luggage, no person NOTHING was scanned thru any kind of security.

There was a snack car on board, where you could get drinks, snacks even a sandwich or pizza. The snack car has tables, so occasionally we would sit in there and play cards.

Each seat on the train had a power outlet, that was nice for plugging in a computer, DVD player, or even charging your phone.

Like airline travel, purchasing your train tickets in advance is cheaper, and train tickets are much cheaper than airfare. An adult ticket round trip from St. Louis to Chicago was only $56!

We shopped the Magnificent Mile

Enjoyed GREAT food!!

Our favorites were Ed Debevics, Carson's Ribs and Bubba Gumps. Fantastic food and service at all of them!

Carson's Ribs is where we ate for Sunshine's birthday dinner, and she said it was her favorite part of the whole trip!!! The girls both had ribs and I had chicken.....all of it was incredible!

Shedd Aquarium did not disappoint!

Lot's of photo ops

We went up in the Sears/Willis Tower and Sky Deck, we took a Fireworks/Architectural cruise and we went to Navy Pier and took the water taxi over to Shedd Aquarium.
We LOVED Chicago

And I think the girls had a fabulous time!!

I can't believe it is over.

Grilled Sandwiches - Panini

We LOVE grilled sandwiches at our house! There is just something so comforting about melted cheese, meat, and veggies wrapped in a crisp crusted bread. They are very easy to make, and great for hot summer nights when you don't want to heat up the house making dinner. The only limit is your imagination!

Panini (which means 'sandwich' in Italian) is a grilled, pressed sandwich made with a special grill. These sandwiches are easy to eat because they are thin, but bursting with flavor!

You don't have to have a special panini grill, we use our small George ForemanGrill it works perfectly, but I can only make 1 or 2 sandwiches at a time on it.

There is the larger George Foreman Next Grilleration and I bet you could get up to 4 sandwiches on it.

Any way you go, these grills are pretty inexpensive and help you make great sandwiches at home!

Our favorite sandwiches right now:

*Ciabatta bread (or thin sliced Italian bread)
*Chicken (deli sliced, or I really like to buy a rotisserie chicken and pull it apart for sandwiches)
*pre-cooked Bacon
*Cheese - we like Pepper Jack or Sargento Chipotle Cheddar
*Ranch Dressing
*Hot Sauce
*Tomato slice

Preparation:

Slice bread open.

Layer, chicken, pre-cooked bacon, cheese and tomato on one slice of bread.
Spread ranch dressing on other slice of bread and sprinkle with a little hot sauce and place on top.

Grill sandwich on a dual contact indoor grill, a panini maker, or just in a skillet, pressing down gently as the sandwich cooks. When bread is crisp and golden brown, cut sandwiches in half and serve immediately.

Of course these can be made to everyone's liking......in our house, I'm the only one who adds the tomato, my youngest is usually the only one who adds the hot sauce, and my oldest doesn't like the bacon on hers.....But that's what's great about a meal like this, it's easy to let everyone make their own!!

Christmas in July

I know for many of us, the temps outside are hot hot hot....but before you know it the leaves will be changing colors, temps will be dropping and the holidays will sneak up on us like they do every year!

I don't know about you, but many of my friends and I love to make handmade gifts and goodies for our loved ones, teachers, neighbors and friends!

Every year I wait until the last minute to gather my ideas and supplies and start whipping up gifts all while having a panic attack that time is running out!

This year the brilliant minds of Cindy of Skip to My Lou, Rachel of a Southern Fairytale and Kelly of According to Kelly have joined forces and will be hosting a Handmade Holiday Christmas in July extravaganza!

They have gathered over 3 dozen amazing bloggers who will share their talents and inspire us for the holidays! If we get started now, by the time the holidays are here we can be sitting around the tree sipping hot cocoa and eliminating some of the stress.

Starting this Monday each blog will feature a different blogger, and a new project. Rachel will have all the YUMMY edible goodies, Kelly the crafty gift ideas and Cindy all the sewing ideas. *I will be posting a holiday recipe on Sunday July 25 at A Southern Fairytale {squeal}

They have “listed” all of bakers, crafters & sewers HERE and will be using the hashtag #handmadeholiday on Twitter.

With that said...I'm off to pull out my new KitchenAid Mixer and dust off my sewing machine. :)

I first told you about Swagbucks here.

Since then, I have continued to use Swagbucks to search to web (it’s especially easy to use, since I added the Swagbucks toolbar to my browser) and my Swagbucks balance continued to grow. Once I have enough, I am able to cash my Swagbucks in for prizes............I always go for the $5 Amazon gift cards.

Once I receive the Amazon gift cards in my Swagbucks account, I just drop them in my Amazon account......so that money is just sitting there waiting for me to use it.

As my Amazon gift card balance began to grow, I started to realize that my dream to own a KitchenAid Mixer became more and more possible.

After being patient for a few months, I was able to purchase this beauty for half price!!

.........had I waited a little longer, I could have gotten it for free.......but patience is something I don't have much of!

Easy Photo Editing Tutorial {Guest Post-Amanda Padgett}

Meet Amanda! She is a "Pioneer Woman" of sorts, although, she says she's not nearly as talented, witty or culinarily gifted as the real one. Amanda grew up in the suburbs or on military bases, but ended up in the country on a cattle and chicken farm an hour from any sizeable town. She is an amazing stay-at-home, homeschooling mom to four children, ages 11 to 4.

Amanda and I really "clicked" as we started our photography journey about the same time, last spring, and it has quickly become a passion for both of us! Most of her subjects are her beautiful kids, the cows, her mother-in-law's flowers and her weeds ("they're prettier in a picture than in real life", she claims). She enjoys editing (with PSE 7) and continues to learn daily. The tutorials she writes are very basic and well documented so that brand new users can learn how to use their editing software. Amanda's tutorials have been an amazing resource for me!! I had owned PSE for years and rarely ever used it because I didn't know how.

Amanda has recently started Everyday Elements, online workshops and video tutorials for PSE users. Also, she has a photography resource blog, PhotographyHaven where you can find lots of free actions, tutorials, workshops and more. Today Amanda is going to share one of her basic tutorials that can be used for any picture!

Hi there! I am thrilled to be guest posting here at TidyMom! Cheryl invited me to do a guest post and after my initial excitement, I started thinking about what to share. I tried to think of a quick, "tidy" trick to share with you and I hope this one hits the spot.

Whether you shoot with a DSLR or a point and shoot, I recommend getting some a photo editing program. There is so much you can do with your images, regardless of the camera used to capture them. The program I am using today is Photoshop Elements, but this tutorial will work in regular Photoshop (CS5 or earlier versions) just as well.

With almost every picture I edit, I do this edit trick which provides light while also boosting color and contrast.

Step 1: Open your image in PSE or PS. Create a Gradient Map adjustment layer by clicking on the half black/half white circle (see "1st"). Then choose 'Gradient Map.'

Step 2: Once the Gradient Map options pop up, navigate until you see the B&W option, click on it. If you don't see this menu, click where the * is and another fly-out menu will appear, then choose 'Default.'

Step 3: Click on the Blend Mode menu box (1st). A menu will either pop up or pop down. Choose 'Soft Light' (2nd).

Step 4: Lower the layer opacity to suit. For portraits, I usually lower this down to between 15% and 25%. For still life, I usually keep it higher.

Here is a before/after shot, with nothing else done to it, not even sharpening. I wanted to show the effect

Here is a little tidbit - I use this technique with 98% of my edits. Never right at the beginning, but usually before I finish with an image, I will have used it. I love it and I think it adds just the right amount of definition to most shots.

Strawberry Lemonade & Homemade "Frosty"

Since we are headed back from our "girls weekend" today, I thought I'd repost a few favorite Summer Time drink recipes we enjoy when the temps start soaring.

Strawberry Lemonade

Strawberries (I bought a 1 pound container and used 3/4 of it)

3/4 cup sugar

3/4 cup lemon juice (I used real lemons and it took 4 large lemons)

2 cups ice cubes

We used our smoothie maker, but you can use a blender. Blend until smooth. Drink immediately. Enjoy!

Last year Amy from Mom Advice posted how to make Home Made Wendy's Frosty!! See Amy's picture of this chocolate creaminess to the right!

This yummy chocolate summertime treat tastes just like a Wendy's Frosty! The original recipe is from The Hillbilly Housewife's "Magic Milkshake". Be sure to read her post for variations and explanation of ingredients.

Thanks to Amy, I've scored the "coolest mom ever" points by making this frosty treat several times already. So far our favorite has been with a scoop of peanut butter!

Homemade Wendy's Frosty (The Magic Milkshake courtesy of Hillbilly Housewife)

1-1/2 to 2 cups ice water
1-1/2 cups nonfat dry milk powder
2/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 to 1-1/2 trays of ice cubes, as much as you can spare
2 tablespoons corn oil plus a 5-second squirt of non-stick spray for emulsification purpose (I substitute the corn oil with canola oil & you can read her notes on why you need that non-stick spray)

Place all of the ingredients into the blender, including the oil and the non-stick spray. Use less water for thicker milk shakes and more water for shakes that are easy on your blender motor. The blender should be about 3/4’s full. Place the lid on. Process for a full 2 minutes. Pour into cups and serve. Makes 4 - 12oz servings. *I make 1/2 the recipe for 2 servings

So pull out your blenders and enjoy some delicious Summer in Glass!

I'm Lovin' It! - Trash to Treasure

While my daughter's and I are heading to The Windy City, one of my favorite bloggers has accepted my invitation to host I'm Lovin' It this week!!! Amanda is a creative mom who blogs about her life as a Christian mom and wife at i am mommy and does amazing things with food and her camera at i am baker. Amanda is one of those super funny people, who is every bit as sweet as she is funny.

So today while I'm Lovin' Chicago, and Amanda being here.......Amanda is going to share what SHE is Lovin'...........Enjoy!!........I think I see a cupcake with MY name on it down there......

I am so, so, so honored to be able to hang out at Tidymom's blog today! Hers is much cleaner then mine, and I have a feeling her kitchen always smells good... fresh cupcakes and fruit roll ups and Gooey Upside Down German Chocolate Cake? Um, yes please!

But anyway... since it is Friday and all, I thought I would share with you somethin' that I love. Ya know, for I'm Lovin' It Friday!

One thing that I love is finding a 'trash' and making it a 'treasure'.

I have a little baking blog and I really struggled to find ways to photograph cakes, cookies, and cupcakes. Cake stands are gorgeous, but can be so expensive! So one day at the thrift store, I spotted a candle stick for less then a $1 and an idea hit me. I would make my own!

I have made about 20 so far, and every single one is white! So I needed something new.

I picked up these little diddies at my local thrift store.

They are ok on their own, but not as pretty as I would like, and certainly not functional. Although I am drawn to all things shiny, these just dont work when trying to photograph a scrumptious dessert. Who wants to see me and my camera in the reflection?

I decided to spray paint these black. I normally choose satin, but I was drawn to the semi-gloss this time.

Since it has been so hot, it took all of 15 minutes to complete.

Wanna see how everything turned out???

(insert dramatic drum roll here please. What? I cant do that? Can someone please figure out a html code for dramatic drum roll and email it to me? Thanks.)

I painted this base white. Its perfect for those extra special cupcakes!

The black plate turned out beautifully if I dont say so myself.

And I love my little cupcake stand! (and apparently I heart Tidymom too!) :)

But my favorite it using the plate and cupcake stand as a cake pedestal!

Now.

I want you to know, since this is just spray paint, I wouldn't actually serve food off of them. These are more for decorative purposes, or for props. You certainly could use them for serving! You just purchase a special paint at home improvement and craft stores that seals the paint and is safe for eating off of.

So there you have it! Something that I'm Lovin'!

Solving a Garden Trouble Spot

Are you a Mod Podge fan? That stuff is fantastic isn't it?
Amy from Mod Podge Rocks shared a fun project you wont want to miss!

We are still crazy busy here, that's why I LOVE this yummy little treat we've been enjoying.

I first saw this "recipe" at I Blame My Mother,
and Sarah got the idea from Once a Month Mo m, who calls them Fruity Breakfast Burrito's.

In the last month I have made 3-4 batches.....we love these THAT much!

Frozen Fruit & Yogurt Rollups
(from Once a Month Mom)

Ingredients:

10 flour tortillas
1-1/2 cups Vanilla yogurt
frozen berries
1/2 cup sugar
1 T. cinnamon
spray butter

Directions:

Mix cinnamon & sugar on a large plate. Spray one side of a flour tortilla with butter, covering the entire surface, then place butter side down on plate with cinnamon and sugar. Press down and move around, coating one side of tortilla in cinnamon and sugar.

Next, place tortilla, sugar side down on another plate. Spread about 1/8 cup of yogurt (I just eyeball this, I don't measure) in a strip a little left of the center. Add some frozen berries (I bought a bag of mixed, strawberries, black berries, raspberries and blue berries- I cut the strawberries up). Roll the tortilla tight and place on a large cookie sheet.

Continue the process with the rest of the tortillas.

Place the cookie sheet in the freezer for about 2 hours. Remove from freezer, cut each tortilla in half and place them in a large zip lock bag and put them back in the freezer for storage.

To Serve:
Take out of bag and eat immediately. You can let them thaw a little bit, but if you let them thaw too long, they're mushy, but can be eaten that way too.

Variations: you can try this with different flavors of yogurt and different fruits. Strawberries and bananas would be good.....just be sure to cut the strawberries up, a whole strawberry is hard to eat when frozen.

Mod Podge Rocks {Guest Post} tutorial

I have a fabulous treat for you all today! Have you heard of Modge Podge Rocks? Amy is an amazingly talented lady.....I wished we lived closer we could have some serious fun crafting! Today Amy is sharing an adorable Mod Podge project for us!! I LOVE this idea!! ..........!

Well hallo! I'm Amy from Mod Podge Rocks, your local wacky decoupage expert. You may have visited me to learn more about Mod Podge, but if you haven't, please swing on by. Be prepared to be "wowed" by the amazing community of people who use and love Mod Podge. Cheryl and I are both part of that community, and I'd love for you to join us!

One thing you might not know about me is that I started my crafty journey with a sewing machine at about 10 years old. My mother sewed a lot and made me learn, which I hated at the time but am thankful for now. As an homage to my mother and to the many seamstresses/Mod Podgers who read my blog, I created this sewing award. It's actually a pin that you can attach to a sewing bag or a shirt . . . you can even use it for a gifty tag. Customize it for the crafter in your life.

Gather These Supplies:
Die cut machine - I have a Sizzix Big Shot and an award ribbon die
Scrapbook paper - I used two sheets of Cosmo Cricket's Material Girl
Maya Road Chipboard Collection - Sew Cute
FolkArt Paint - Pink, Baby Pink, Titanium White and Silver Anniversary
Mod Podge Hard Coat
Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
Flat paint brush
Liner paint brush
Lara's Crafts 2" wood circle
1 1/2" pin back - self-adhesive

The first thing you are going to do is cut out your ribbon piece. I used one sheet of scrapbook paper for the main part of the ribbon and a second, coordinating sheet for the inside of the ribbon. Once you have your die cuts, set aside.

If you don't have a die cutter, never fear! You can use a template from the internet (search for award ribbon line art) - just be sure to use something license-free if it's for other than personal use.

I painted my pieces next. I chose to use a wood piece as the main part of my pin to make it sturdy. I painted the wood piece and the main body of the thread Pink, the "spool" of my chipboard thread Titanium White and the needle Silver Anniversary. Let everything dry and set them aside. Set them aside in a safe place - I spent about 30 minutes looking for the MIA needle at one point!

Attach the ribbon die cut to the wood circle. I used Hard Coat Mod Podge - you don't have to, but I wanted the Satin finish. Paint Mod Podge around the edge and then adhere the ribbon shape to the wood circle. Smooth thoroughly.

Add Mod Podge to the center of the circle, and place your circle piece in the middle. Smooth and allow to dry for 15 - 20 minutes.

Coat the entire piece with Mod Podge - I even did the back! Mod Podge will help the ribbon not to tear. Do at least three coats, allowing time to dry between coats.

Glue down the chipboard pieces with Mod Podge. I decided at the last minute to use my Baby Pink and liner brush to give some texture to the thread. Just a little swoop here and there adds some interest.

Now's the fun part! I love Dimensional Magic. LOVE! It fries with the same kind of look as an epoxy, glassy and raised, but without the mixing and chemicals. All you have to do is turn the bottle over and tap gently to remove bubbles (don't shake), then start squeezing gently on the object(s). Build it up as much as you like! I added to both the thread and needle.

Allow to dry overnight.

Add your self-adhesive pin back and press . . . you're done. It doesn't take long to make a variety of awards for friends. I love buttons, so I'm thinking a button award might be next! Would it be bad to give it to myself?

My guest poster for today is a sweet friend of mine, Janet. Janet and I have never met, but we have connected thru our blogs and have so much in common....I really think we may be long lost sisters! Janet and I have become close over the last 5 month while her son, Brandon has been in Afghanistan.............Janet will have the BEST 4th of July this year, as you are reading this, Janet is packing, because this weekend, on the Fourth of July in fact, their Ranger will step onto a plane in Afghanistan to end his deployment and come home!!

Hi there, Tidy-Mom fans!

My name is Janet and I author the blog, From Captain's Daughter to Army Mom. I am relatively new to the Army Mom part, and Proud but Terrified pretty much sums me up. In fact, as I write to you today, our son is making his way back to the United States from his deployment in Afghanistan. Nevertheless, I'm thrilled to join you here at Cheryl's blog as today's guest blogger, and humbled to follow my friend and couponing-mentor, Melanie of The Coupon Goddess. Ever since Melanie taught me how to get paid to buy my favorite shampoo, I can't shop for it any other way! Throw in the fact that she has supported my son's Ranger battalion with care packages and it pretty much makes her a perfect angel in my book.

When our mutual friend Cheryl invited me to guest post for her, I was quite happy to accept. For over a year now she has inspired me, through her blog and friendship, to become more organized in almost every aspect of my home and office life! And have you checked out her recipes and photography? I find both equally delicious!

Since we are in the throws of Summer and spend every waking moment outside in our gardens, I thought I would share a little gardening how-to with you. Not because I'm this terrific gardener, oh no! I most certainly am not!

About all I know about proper gardening is how to enjoy it. Fortunately, I am married to a Brilliant hobby-gardener. He plans, he executes, and Everything he plants thrives, and in most cases, multiplies!

I titled this post Solving a Garden trouble spot because it's exactly what he did... In a Big way! The addition of a koi pond and shade garden in a spot in our back yard that almost never gets any spring or summer sunshine, and is almost always damp, was the perfect solution for a space that was otherwise unusable. Having said that, my husband insists I tell you that there are, No garden trouble spots... Only plants put where they don't belong.

This slight disagreement between us aside... I would like you share with you what I believe was a trouble spot in our garden solved in a most delightful and entertaining way.

In this area of our rear Garden behind the house, there are no less than

eight huge trees. Their spring, summer and fall Canopies makes this

a decent place to hang out to Escape summer heat; however, the shade

created by the trees makes it next to Impossible to cultivate a lush,

green lawn. So what to do? He suggested a pond. I said no pond!

I just couldn't see it...

But he could. And so, the Pond and

shade garden that would Frame it began

It was quite the project... And, I had absolutely nothing to do with

it. Except to come home every day and Marvel at the progress!

Pretty soon, his Vision came to life and I began

to see exactly what he was so Excited about

With the addition of a deck, this area became More than just a koi pond

and shade garden. It became another Outside room. A place to hang

out and Relax apart from the pool, firepit area and deck off the house

It was at this point I began to see the Error of my ways. And,

when we went Shopping for our first bunch of fish, I was all in!

The fact that the View from the house was improving helped too!

And, it's only gotten Better over time!

With the addition of fish and water plants, our pond was complete

Speaking of plants! While a lawn is a No-no back here... Other plants,

such as Ferns, hostas, creeping jenny and Japanese maples, love it!

An added Bonus of having the pond is the wild life it attracts all year long

In summer, when the Hostas bloom,

their sweet fragrance fills this area!

I didn't expect so many plants to bloom in this Shady, moist

garden. But the fact is, there is something Blooming from early

spring, right into late Fall. Here is one of my favorites - Toad Lily

It's the perfect compliment to the ferns and hostas that surround it

And speaking of Hostas!

Hostas fascinate me. They disappear completely from the

garden following the first Frost, and return faithfully each

spring to produce these wondrous bouquets of green

Deer love Hostas too! The secret to having both is to offer

the Deer something else to munch besides your hostas!

We offer cracked corn. And plenty of

it, since it's also what the Ducks like!

Of course, it's important to keep Feeding after the hostas go to sleep too!

In winter, the pond shade garden disappears. However, the pond

and trees continue to offer plenty of Visual interest and appeal

Early spring, as things awaken and in summer, when things

are at their peak, are my Favorite times of year at the pond

But honestly, there isn't a bad time to be at the pond. Even in

a heavy down-pour, the Trees high above act as a natural

umbrella so that we can continue to Enjoy time by the pond

I especially enjoy the little Visitors!

They come. They eat. They swim, and they Nap. Right at our feet!

If you have a shady, moist area in your garden, ferns and Hostas are for you!

And of course, a pond too. If you're so inclined...

I assure you... You'll never regret the initial effort

it takes for such tremendous and Continuous reward

Aside from feeding the Fish and cleaning the

pond filter, this Garden takes care of itself

No weeding. No trimming. All enjoying!

Which is exactly what I like in a garden!

Have you seen the Broadway show Wicked?
Hollywood, my mom and I saw it here in St. Louis in 2007. We LOVED it!! Sunshine has been anxiously waiting for it to come back so she could go.

Her 6 month count down (she literally told me how many more days for nearly 6 months lol) finally ended last Sunday night, when we went to the Fabulous Fox Theater, which is a treat it's self.

I love this picture I shot of the two of them outside the theater before the show.

Hello! My name is Melanie and I’m the founder of The Coupon Goddess. I’m honored to be writing a post for Cheryl who never ceases to amaze me with her abounding creativity and never ending talents. I’ve learned so much from her and would like to thank her for all that she shares!

Now I’m sure almost all of you are familiar with coupons. I myself have been using them for 12 years and without them I’d be paying out the nose for food and household products. I have 4 kids, and let me tell you they can eat. I shudder to think how high my grocery bill would be without those little pieces of paper cut from the Sunday coupon inserts! Last year my collective savings between the grocery and drugstores was $52,000. Now I can already hear what you are thinking…. Is she nuts? Nope, just driven and I’m going to share with you how that crazy amount of savings came to be.

One of my passions is giving back to my community. I love to volunteer for various town events, fundraisers, and even our hometown Thanksgiving Day parade, but I’ve always wanted to do something that was more meaningful. One day while I was putting away a particularly large “free spree” from couponing I realized that most of it could be used by the men and women serving our Country overseas and that’s when my program “The Coupon Goddess Supports The Troops” was born.

With the help of a local realtor, I collected products that were free after coupons, packaged them up and he paid the postage to ship them overseas. What started off as a box or two at a time, grew into a 12 case shipment last Christmas that was distributed to an entire Army troop. I can’t even begin to tell you how blessed I was to receive pictures back from the guys holding their razors, shaving cream, body washes, and countless other items I got for free with coupons. That experience motivated me to use every coupon I could get my hands on for practical items they could use, hence the crazy savings I racked up last year.

Now I don’t share this with you to toot my own horn. What I want to do is motivate you to think about your talents and skills and how you could use them to help others. I would’ve never thought that coupons would be my vehicle to give back, but in the end they enabled me to provide for the very people protecting me (and you too!) What skills and talents do you have that help you “pay it forward”? You’d be amazed at what you can do when you put your mind to it!

Each one of us in our own way can give back to those who protect us with thoughtful gestures such as a care package, a card or even a simple prayer for their protection. WFMW - Blogger HMTL Gadget Help

If you are on Blogger, you may have noticed a recent annoying change with your gadgets.

Are you getting this error when you try and post an HTML/Java Script Gadget with out a title?

As of last week, Blogger made an update to the HTML/Javascript Gadget making the Title field required - meaning you can not post an HTML Gadget with out a title.

Thanks to twitter, when I called out my complaint, Krystyn of Krizzy Designs was quick to offer a suggestion....and it WORKED!!

just place this code

in the title box then click "Save"

This code will allow you to post your Gadget without a title.

You will have to do it every time you update the gadget -

Blogger says -
"based upon user feedback, we will soon be removing that requirement."

But until they fix it, you can work around it this way!!

After she passed I thought of how those children must feel to have those precious photographs. I have made it my personal goal to follow her wise suggestion and I try to take photos of myself with my children….double chins, make-up free, bed-head and all."

Red White & Blue Cupcakes!

Some people like to celebrate the 4th of July with barbecues and fireworks....I say,

"Let's celebrate with cupcakes!!"

If you are looking for an impressive treat for your 4th of July celebration, look no further. These Patriotic Cupcakes are too cute, a box cake mix makes it easy and they are sure to be a hit with the kids. Disclaimer - yes, I've heard all the "evil" about food coloring in food.....if this bother's you, please just close this post.

I've seen these cupcakes around the web for a while, like here and here and I've been looking forward to trying them myself! I will to say that I was thrilled with the results! They turned out even cuter than I had hoped for.

Here's what you do:

Mix up a batch of white cake batter, using The Perfect Cupcakes (using a mix)

Divide your white cake mix into 3 bowls.

Add red gel coloring to one, and blue to another.

I highly recommend using the gel-paste food coloring. The color is concentrated, so it does not require a lot to achieve the hue you’re going for. The liquid food coloring from the grocery store will "water down" your batter.

Spoon a little of each color into your cupcake liners, filling about 1/2 full.

Bake at 350° for 20 mins. and let cool.

Next I made a batch of Glory's Frosting

Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting
(from Glorious Treats)

Ingredients:
½ cup butter, at room temperature
8 oz. cream cheese, at room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups powdered sugar
1 to 4 Tablespoons heavy whipping cream

Directions:

*Place butter in a large mixing bowl and blend slightly. Add cream cheese and blend until combined, about 30 seconds.

Add vanilla and sugar and blend on low until combined. Increase to medium speed and beat until it begins to get fluffy. (*I used clear vanilla to keep my frosting nice and white)

Slowly add the cream a little at a time until desired consistency is met. (Don't add too much if you want the frosting to stay in place when piped on cupcakes.)

I added some bright white gel coloring at this point to make my frosting nice and white.

Beat until fluffy, about 1 minute.

Pipe onto cupcakes!

To make my icing multi colored, I tried something new this time.

I bought the Wilton Holiday Gels in red and blue and lined the inside of my pastry/decorating bag with 2 stripes of each.

I then filled the bag with my white frosting and piped my cupcakes using my Wilton 1M tip.

I did add some fun patriotic sprinkles to some, that I found in the Dollar Spot at Target a while back, and topped all of them with these little red pin-wheel toppers I picked up at WalMart.

See how fun they look when you bite in!

I'm going to make these again this weekend as our family all gather's at our family log home.

I appreciate their dedication and sacrifices from the bottom of my heart. It is because of them and their families that we can fly our flags high and be thankful that we live in the U.S.A.

On another note.....

Cindy recently emailed me about her 6 year old niece, Sirri, who was diagnosed with cancer almost 2 years ago and is thankfully a survivor today!

She had a potato sized tumor in her tiny little chest squeezed in between her heart and lungs. It is truly a miracle and act of God that she is alive today. But her family also cannot go without recognizing the efforts of the American Cancer Society. Sirri's family's experience was made so much lighter because of the efforts of the American Cancer Society. They do so much for those suffering with and the families of those suffering with cancer.

They would not be able to do half of what they do without the help of ordinary people donating and raising funds through various events like the Relay For Life.

Cindy told me:

"To celebrate and honor Sirri's life my family and some very close friends are participating in Relay For Life on the evening of Friday, June 25th to help raise money to save the lives of others.
As part of Relay For Life we are expected to raise money to contribute to the efforts of the American Cancer Society. We have a goal of raising $5,000 as a team.
In an effort to do my part, I have been working long and hard to get an etsy shop, Button of Hope up and running. I have made earrings, necklaces, and hair pins and am currently selling them. 100% of my proceeds will go directly to the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life.

All of us on the team have come up with our own ways to fund raise and have a goal to raise $5,000. And we are actually more than half way there!!!

Our family feels so blessed to have Sirri with us today. For me personally, she is one of the lights and joys of my life. She is my "little squish" and someone I can't imagine life without. She is a healthy and thriving 6 year old who is constantly making us laugh, loves her first grade class, playing with her friends, performing for her family, and painting her fingernail."

Gooey Upside Down German Chocolate Cake!

Is it HOT where you are?!
Ugh, we have had more than 10 days in a row of 90+ temps with our heat index over 100!
Sunshine has summer basketball going on, but even with evening games, the temps are still in the 90's and they're playing in a gym with no AC!

During the day, I've been working on a new blog look!! I'm excited about how it's coming along, and I hope to have it up and ready to share in the next few weeks.

So in the mean time, I may be posting a little less often. But rest assured, it will be worth the wait!! I'm hoping to have a few guests post and fun giveaways while I'm busy.

Early this month was my mom's birthday!
She requested her favorite cake.....so I thought I'd share with you!

It's a combination of a Gooey Butter cake and German chocolate cake....but upside down!

You do know, everything tastes better upside down don't you?

Gooey Upside Down German Chocolate Cake

(printable recipe)

Ingredients:

1 cup coconut

1 cup pecans, chopped

1 box German Chocolate Cake mix, prepared

1 pound (4 cups) powdered sugar

1- 8oz cream cheese, softened

1 cup butter, melted

Directions:

Flour & grease 9x13 pan
preheat oven to 350°
Sprinkle coconut and pecans in bottom of pan
Prepare cake mix per box instructions
Pour prepared cake batter over coconut & pecans
Mix sugar, cheese and butter in medium bowl until well blended
Pour/spoon over cake batter - do NOT mix in
Bake 50-55 mins
