One of the things that people bemoan about the rise of the Internet is the lack of attention to detail such as spelling and grammar. Fadi, if you are skilled in writing short stories and film scripts as your bio states, why couldn't you take the time to Google the spelling of Jane Austen's name? Or spell Trollope the same way twice in a quote? And have you really "perused" your passion, or perhaps "pursued" it?

I know this is an unpopular position to take. Many online authors think their responsibility begins and ends with spell check. Sometimes it helps to have a second person look at your work before you post it. Mistakes that your eye skips may be caught by someone else. Aside from basic copy editing, almost any answer can be found on the internet itself. I'm only writing this because I am a fan of Stephen Fry and I think this is an excellent article marred by errors that make it seem unprofessional.

This is an excellent article. Thank you for the information. I was "phished" by the "haha this you?" scam on Twitter. I had my computer set up to remember my login info and it loaded it on the fake login page. I clicked like an idiot. Luckily, I realized it quickly when I tweeted the person who sent it that I couldn't access the file and she wrote back and told me she hadn't sent it. I immediately changed my email login, password and then did that on a couple other sites where I'd lazily used the same login password. I don't think this was a particularly harmful scam, but any time that someone grabs your personal information is scary.

With social networking, Google and blogs, privacy is, in some ways, impossible. You can find just about anyone. You can even pay for background checks and find out about his or her bankruptcies, convictions and mortgages. It's a stalker's paradise.

Well, I don't always tend to trust random people online, but when they seem to have a good non-spammy profile I would.

I, for one, would say falling in love online works. With all the talking, Skype video chats, and mobile text messaging, I don't see a reason "long-distance love" wouldn't spark. Although, the distance part sucks :)

Yes and no. As much as social media plays a role in spreading this rumor (and I'm being overly polite in calling it that) it can also play a role in defusing it. Hence our website, our twitter account, and our facebook page. I'll also note that you quoted the FAMSI site above, which is *definitely* against any kind of misreading of the Mayan tradition as a prediction of an apocalyptic event.

Here's a coupla other places to check for fascinating facts & conjectures about 2012:

The Holy Bible, Book of Matthew, Chapter 24. Jesus own words about how to tell the end of the world is coming. Step-by-step! It's well worth the read. Stuff seems to be coming together right on this schedule!

The South Pole Telescope. in 2007 & 2008 the US gvt. accomplished an (almost) secret Project directly on the South Pole, installing a building the size of a Walmart store and a huge special-purpose microwave telescope that first went into operation in late 2008. Everything had to be flown in during the two-month "summer" season, including every nut, bolt, beam and bologna sandwich necessary to build a 160,000 square foot building; 1,240,000 pounds of equipment and materials were shipped on one-hundred-twenty-one flights of Air National Guard C-130 "Hercules" cargo aircraft. To keep the project secret, the US gvt. used VERY EXPENSIVE mid-air refueling to keep the planes away from the regular civilian refueling base of Christ Church, NZ. The telescope is sited directly on the South Pole for stability (if you move opposite to the earth's rotation at exactly the same speed as the earth is turning, you remain rock-solid and can view a sector of stars for as long as it takes to see if one of those objects is GETTING LARGER IN DIAMETER. If it is, it's coming right at us, and that's bad news! Since there are 400 BILLION STARS in the Milky Way galaxy, there are a lot of objects to examine. That's why the rush! Data received from the stars by the South Pole Telescope is satellite-relayed to a laboratory in Dallas TX for online analysis. It is AWFUL living conditions - this winter everybody is bunking together for warmth instead of living in the private rooms they were promised, and all the heat is electric from the huge diesel generators, and ALL the diesel fuel must be flown in all the way from the USA (9,000 miles one way!) You can only fly in during the 2-month summer, because it is so cold in the winter (begins in June) that the hydraulic fluid on the planes will freeze and you can't take off (no flaps; no brakes). Altitude of the South Pole is 10,000'; it is 500 miles from the seacoast and no roads. Nobody knows what they're finding with that telescope, and they ain't talk'n! But it must be pretty important!

Everybody knows the ending date of the famous Mayan long count calendar - 12/21/2012 - but how many know the BEGINNING DATE? The long count calendar is 5,125 years long - so the beginning date is August 11, 3114 BC. That's only 40 years after Adam died (Yes - THAT Adam!) and a few years before Noah's Flood. 3114 BC is the year that the astronomical observatory of Stonehendge was built in ancient Britian (Google this!), and about the same time that the ancient Egyptians, Sumerians, Babylonians, Chinese etc. began to observe the heavens every night, big time. Could it be that SOMETHING HUGE came through our solar system about that time - wacked a planet between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter and smashed it into flinders (creating today's asteroid belt), then came inbound, drawn by the Sun's gravity, zinged around the Sun and headed back out for another 5,125 year orbit; and during that time, it's gravity upset the Sun and in passing, rearranged the furniture here on earth, considerably. The ancient peoples - understandably frightened by all of this - established a watch on the sky for this thing to return. Maybe the Mayans could tell by the speed and the direction in which it was heading, that it would return in exactly 5,125 years. And maybe that's why they developed the "long count" calendar. Who knows? But the South Pole Telescope is searching the southern sky and the constellations of Orion and Sagittarius, and the ancient Sumerians report that "The Destroyer" came out of the southern skies from Orion and Sagittarius at an angle of thirty degrees. In the great pyramid in Egypt, there is a narrow shaft (once thought to be a ventillation shaft for fresh air) leading from the "Queen's chamber" in the center of the pyramid, to the outside of the pyramid; it is aimed directly at the constellation of Orion.
Go figger!
By the way - it will be exactly 1,000 days to 12/21/2012 in just a few days! I wonder what's going to happen?

@go: Great post. I love the concept of "making it easy to fail", that's spot on. If it's easy to fail, then you can "fail fast", too, without thinking too much about the investment you've already put into your idea.

All that makes perfect sense when it's at the concept stage, but I feel when I am in the process of *defining failure*, I face a dilemma. How much time should you give an idea/project? and what are the metrics that define success (or being on the right track)?

I've often wondered how twitter make money and why there aren't ads even on my twitter profile page which if it were any other website would probably have at least one or two ads somewhere on the page.

I don't think I would sell ads in my twitter stream, I don't have that many followers anyway. But I wouldn't care if twitter advertised either. I don't think it would make much difference, to me twitter is full of ads as it is. 9 out of 10 tweets that I see seem to be some kind of self promotion! (maybe it's the people I follow!)

I'm learning Italian with Babbel (http://www.babbel.com) and I would say it's even more intuitive than livemocha. You pay a little, but I think because of that you see a difference in quality.

Good observation. I agree that there are people (including myself) who are addicted to Facebook. It's a sure way of cutting down our productivity with studies or work. I think the addiction has been proven to be dangerous, causing some students to flunk classes, or obtain lower grades than they would have if they didn't have a facebook account. It has changed lives both in good and bad ways.

The cure for addiction? Get a hobby. Learn a sport, a craft, or a foreign language. :P

This kind of cause-related campaigns are just the best usage possible of social media. Enjoyed reading the post.

I'm wondering what other cause-related campaigns are succeeding out there? Next post? :)

Great work!
