It’s October!! Halloween is just around the corner, so, I think we’ll get a little witchy this week. This fun Witch on Broom tattoo is the art work of Al “Coop” Cooper. He’s well known and much loved for his amazing cartoon work, especially for his depictions of sexy, cute, plus size women. Note the varying line weight- it’s one of the touches that make his figures so vital and alive!

There is a legend that tells of the small but courageous Koi fish. The Koi, like our American salmon, swim upstream against all odds. Legend has it that only one in many and many actually survive to swim all the way up the Rainbow River and arrive at the river’s head to leap over Dragon gate. As they crest in their mighty leap they begin to transform from a Koi fish, first into a Koi- dragon, half fish with the head of a dragon. They complete this transformation as they conclude their leap, coming down on the far side of Dragon Gate as a fully formed dragon. This tattoo depicts the story of the Koi dragon, also known as the Boys’ Day Legend.

In the above image you can just see the tail of the koi fish as it leaps over the collector’s knee (which represents Dragon Gate)

This eagle feather tattoo is a fairly simple, somewhat stylized piece. The client liked the idea of the eagle head framed within a circle and the off center feather creates a pleasing asymmetry. The tattoo was worked in black and grey with white highlights to make it pop!
The eagle has significance to a wide range of people from many backgrounds. Of course the bald eagle as our US bird is a patriotic symbol, but the eagle is also a strong spiritual totem for many people. It represents freedom, courage, guardianship, power, connection to a Higher Power and healing, as well as having many other attributes. The eagle is a symbol that means many things to many people.
The eagle feather is prized by many Native People as a powerful healing and ceremonial tool as well as a symbol of status and honor.

It’s Tattoo Tuesday again! Yay! Ink lovers unite! Let’s see… This week let’s get spiritual. A spiritual tattoo, I think. I love doing what I term Spirit Ink. A client comes to me with a feeling they want to express, a concept that has emotional and/or spiritual significance to them and as we talk and I get a feeling for them and their idea, their custom design grows out of that.

I swore I would never do a swastika tattoo. I should know by now that it’s never wise to name that cup from which I will not drink. This was an interesting piece and I was blessed to become better educated in the process. I did already know that the swastika, which holds such a viscerally negative energy for most of us thanks to it’s association with Naziism and anti semitism, was in fact never intended to have such negative associations. I knew that the origins of the swastika design were in fact positive and even uplifting, but I didn’t really know just how many cultures had historically used this “broken armed cross” design in their textiles, pottery and architecture. My client introduced me to ManWoman – Warrior of Sacred Imagination and I was forced to change my “no swastika tattoo” policy. It is now called my no hate tattoo” policy. Big difference, I now truly understand. ManWoman, or Manny for short, is on a spirit driven quest to reclaim the swastika. He has written a book entitled Gentle Swastika, Reclaiming the Innocence, and I can almost guarantee that you will come away from his website with a deep and abounding sense of the bright spirit of this person as well as a whole new understanding of the swastika. Spend some time there and enjoy the YouTube, many arresting photos of beautiful swastika tattoos and his transcript of his journey. There is also a lovely article at Vice, so I won’t be redundant here. Suffice it to say that doing this gentle, jewel toned swastika tattoo for this lovely woman was my absolutely unexpected pleasure. I hope you enjoy them too.
