Off To Uni

I leave for Sheffield University in a few hours to begin my four year masters in Software Engineering, though I’m not really thinking about the work at the moment. It’s all pretty scary and I’m going to miss everyone loads but hopefully I’ll settle into the student way of life fairly quickly!

Things will be a bit all over the place for the next few days so I probably won’t have time to update TMMD with what I’ve been up to. I think I’ll try and pick it up again when things have calmed down but posts may have to slow from once a day to whenever I find the time.

Best of luck to everyone who’s starting uni in the next few weeks. :)

Becky and I rented The Prestige last night, neither of us having even heard of it, and it was one of the best films I’ve seen in ages! I don’t know how it could have completely slipped under my radar.

Set in Nineteenth Century London, the film charts the growing obsession of magicians Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) in sabotaging each others’ acts after Angier blames Borden for his wife’s death.

Also starring Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Piper Perabo, Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis and David Bowie, the acting is brilliant and the storyline kept us both guessing ‘til the end.

Highly recommended.

Reading a newspaper, I saw a picture of birds on the electric wires. I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes (no Photoshop edit). I knew it wasn’t the most original idea in the universe. I was just curious to hear what melody the birds were creating.

30 Minutes a Day:

I missed posting something here the last two days. TMMD is a self-imposed project, no-one else is making me do it, but it does get to me when I don’t have anything to post come late evening.

It isn’t always a reflection of the kind of day I’ve had; a lot of the time what I’ve enjoyed most is just difficult to publish here. I can’t photograph every quirky thing I see or remember every good song that comes on shuffle, and if I stuck to posting what really made each day, things might get a little samey.

Jack Cheng’s very well written (and designed) article touches on the main thing keeping me going with TMMD. Like a break in the chain of crosses on a calendar, gaps in the big red date boxes on this blog frustrate me to the point of catching up and backdating posts.

My original plan was to keep this little experiment going for a year. I might settle for until the redesign of samrayner.com though. At least then I’ll still have somewhere to post things. Mind you, at the current rate, that could be while yet…
